Alice S. Reed
2002-07-11

Alice S. Reed, 81, died Tuesday, July 2 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 2, 1920 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Alden Swett and Hazel Alley.

She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools. After high school, she pursued a career as a secretary, working for Schmidtmann's Realty and Blake's Marine.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Damariscotta. She loved spending time with her family and loved her children. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, the outdoors and working in her garden and watching birds.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles P. Reed Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Lewis of Boothbay; one sister, Judy Nason of Boothbay Harbor; two brothers, Edward Swett of Boothbay Harbor and Byron Swett of Boothbay; two grandchildren, Jeffery Lewis and Steven Lewis, both of Boothbay Harbor; great-grandchildren, Casey Lewis of Bowdoin, Faith Lewis, Tayla Lewis, Steven Lewis and Kayla Lewis, all of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service was held at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home Friday, July 5.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be to Gregory Wing, Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Charlotte L. C. Reed
2002-06-13

Charlotte L. Colcord Reed, 72, died Thursday, June 6 at her home in Boothbay.

Born January 12, 1930 in Mars Hill, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Dorothy Blanchard Libby. She grew up and attended local schools in Mars Hill and graduated from Farmington State Teachers College.

Mrs. Reed taught home economics at Aroostook County Institute in Mars Hill, Lubec, and at Boothbay Region High School until she retired. For 20 years she ran Robins Luncheonette on the dock in Boothbay Harbor with her husband Robin Colcord. She was a member of the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, Crescent Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Downeaster Camping Club and served as secretary of the club.

Mrs. Reed volunteered at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, traveling in her motor home, the outdoors and playing with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Edward S. Reed of Boothbay; one daughter, Laura Blake and her husband Tom of Southport; three sons, Donald W. Colcord and Larry Colcord and his wife Mary, all of Boothbay Harbor, and David Colcord of Hobe Sound, Florida; stepchildren, Arthur Reed and his wife Pam and Alan Reed and his wife Martha, all of Boothbay, and Arnold Reed and his wife Kay of Westbrook; grandchildren, Tallie and Nathaniel Colcord, both of Boothbay Harbor; eight step-grandchildren; and four great-step-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held Sunday, June 9 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Burial followed in the Oakland cemetery in Boothbay Harbor.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Miles Home Health Hospice, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Melissa Reeves
2002-08-01

Melissa Reeves of Gray, died Wednesday, July 24, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She will be remembered for her infectious laughter and willingness to take risks, and above all, her deep love of life.

Ms. Reeves moved to Maine from her native Connecticut to construct, design and manage Fleet Pride in Scarborough.

She was the daughter of Joanne (Shaw) Reeves of Niantic, Conn., and the late George Henry Reeves II; stepdaughter of Janna Parker Day of East Boothbay; mother of Albert Post III of Wisconsin; sister of Tiffany Reeves of Thomaston and George Henry Reeves III of California; and special friend of Franklin Lovejoy of Maine. She also leaves cousins, aunts and uncles from Connecticut and Montana.

A Celebration of Life ceremony was held this past Saturday, July 27 in Niantic, Connecticut.

Donations in her name may be made to Dana Farber Bone Marrow Research, 10 Brookline Place North, Brookline, MA 02445, c/o Melissa Reeves Fund.

Milford E. Rice Sr.
2002-07-04

Milford Ezzell Rice Sr., 68, of Wiscasset died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at his residence.

Born in San Antonio, Texas on June 28, 1933, he was a twin son to Linnie Earl and Anita Louise (Hartman) Ezzell. After moving to Arrowsic, he was raised by his adopted father Walter Percy Rice.

During high school he was employed at Senter's Department Store in Bath. He graduated from Morse High School in Bath in the Class of 1952.

On January 25, 1953, he married the former Celestia A. Harkins. He was employed as an apprentice under the G. I. Bill as an auto mechanic at the former Harry H. Smart Ford Dealership in Brunswick. He served in the Maine Army National Guard in Bath and was drafted in to the United States Army and stationed at the U. S. Army headquarters in Orleans, France during the Korean Conflict. On February 10, 1958 he was employed at Bath Iron Works as a shipfitter and later as a senior specialist structural budgeter. On February 28, 1991 he took early retirement after 33 years with the Bath Iron Works.

Mr. Rice was an active member, and former deacon of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Bath where he served as financial secretary and stewardship committee where he served as chairman. He was a member of the Polar Star Lodge of Masons #114 in Bath where he was a member of the Montgomery and St. Bernard R.A.C. # 2, the Dunlap Commandary Knights Templar #5 and the Mount Vernon Council #2 Royal and Select Masters of Brunswick. He was a life member of the Fort George Lodge # 37, the Knights of Pythias in Brunswick where he served as past chancellor commander, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans John F. McPherson Chapter #1 in Augusta, life member of the Smith Tobey American Legion Post # 21 in Bath, member of the National Rifle Association, Sportsman Alliance of Maine, Past President of the PTA of Mitchell School in Bath.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and hunting, fishing.

He was predeceased by his father Linnie Earl Ezzell on November 2, 1958, his adopted father Walter Percy Rice on April 14, 1983, his mother Anita L. Hartman Rice on December 2, 1989, a brother Earlie Reese Ezzell on October 20, 1983 and by his son Chester Arthur Rice on September 3, 1964.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Celestia A. Rice of Wiscasset; two sons, Milford Rice Jr. of West Forks and Steven Jay Rice and his wife Nicole I. of Dresden; one daughter, Gloria Jean Asalone and her husband Barry D. of Sandown, N.H.; three brothers, his twin brother Wilford Ezzell Rice and his wife Sherry M. of Woolwich, William Lee Rice and his wife Shirley A. of Alna and Harvey Walter Rice and his wife Linda S. of Bowdoinham; two sisters, Sylvia Ann Russell of Nashville, Tenn. and Marion Louise White and her husband Stephen C. of Bath; an aunt, Nora Ezzell of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was be held Friday June 28 at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Bath with Rev. Bill Bliss officiating. A private family burial was held in Maple Grove cemetery Extension in Bath with military honors. A gathering of family and friends followed at the United Church of Christ Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Christ Congregational Youth Group, 150 Congress Avenue, Bath, 04530 or to KNO-WAL-LIN Hospice, 170 Pleasant Street, Rockland, Maine 04841.

Jon-Michael Rice
2002-08-29

Jon-Michael Rice, 17, of Old Bath Road, Wiscasset died Tuesday, August 20 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Bath on November 19, 1984, he was the son of Ray M. Jr. and Christine D. (Gudroe) Rice.

Jon loved drawing, basketball, his family and friends. He played on the Junior varsity and varsity team at Wiscasset High School and also the All-American AAU travel team, the Bombers. He was entering his senior year at Wiscasset High School.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Raymond Gudroe.

Survivors include his parents of Wiscasset; one sister, Kari L. Rice of Wiscasset; maternal grandmother, June Gudroe of Wiscasset; paternal grandparents, Raymond M. Rice Sr. of Conway, Mass., Carmen Frizzell of Alexandria, Va.; paternal great-grandparents, Everett Rice and Elizabeth Rice of Williamsburg, Mass.; his girlfriend, Sabra Eddy of Westport Island; and his close friend and future brother-in-law, Aaron LeClair.

Jon will be greatly missed by everyone who had the good fortune of meeting.

A funeral service was held Friday, August 23 at the Wiscasset Middle School outdoor basketball courts in Wiscasset. A private burial will be held at a later dated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jon Rice Scholarship Fund, c/o Wiscasset High School, 272 Gardiner Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

Robert W. Richards
2002-05-30

Robert W. Richards, 65, died Monday, May 27 in Friendship.

Born October 25, 1936 in Friendship, a son of William S. andViolet Vose Richards.

He grew up in Friendship and attended schools in Friendship and Waldoboro High School in Waldoboro. He then entered the United States Army and served in Germany. After the service, he was a fisherman for many years.

His hobbies included fishing, beano, working in the woods and taking pictures with his camera. He had a green thumb and loved to garden. He also loved all animals.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carla (1993).

Survivors include his companion, Viola Stone of Waldoboro; children, William C. Richards of Torrington, Conn., Donna Fiore and her companion, Myron Springer of Waldoboro, Kathy Harris and her husband Craige of Scotland, Tammy Fiore and her husband, Mike of Nobleboro, Ronald Richards and his companion, Jodi Larrondo of St. George, Pamela Christ and her husband Robert of Waldoboro, Paula Richards and her husband, Mark Holbrook, of Boothbay Harbor; 15 grandchildren; onegreat-grandchild; sisters, Elizabeth Dinsmore of Friendship, Roberta Fuller of Rockland, Goldie Richards of Rockland and Barbara Robinson of St. George; brothers, Victor Richards of Wellington and Roy Richards of Rockland.

A graveside service will he held at 3 p.m., Friday, May 31 at the Village cemetery in Friendship. The Rev. Mike Poli will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friendship Ambulance Service, C/O Merle Beal, P.O. Box 330, Friendship, ME 04547.

Arrangements are by the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Eleanor P. Richardson
2002-11-07

Eleanor Pearson Richardson, 90, formerly of Westport Island and Andover, Massachusetts, died of leukemia Sunday, November 3 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center.

She was a resident of The Homestead in Cushing.

She was born December 6, 1911, in Weymouth, Mass., the daughter of Parker Tufts and Edith (Kalloch) Pearson. She attended Weymouth Schools, where her father was superintendent for 33 years, and received her bachelor of arts degree from Tufts University in 1933.

During college, she worked summers at the old Samoset Hotel in Rockland. After a brief career at the Quincy, Mass. Telephone Company, she married Elford Hubbard Richardson June 13, 1936. Elford's career as a civil engineer took the family from Westwood, Mass. to Hornell, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Pa. and Portland.

Mrs. Richardson was an instructor in hand-hooked rugs, and was accomplished in tray painting, knitting, needlepoint and embroidery.

The Richardsons retired to a small coastal farm on Westport Islandwhere they raised animals, fruits, and vegetables. They were involved inthe community, and donated the land for the Westport community building and fire department. They were founding members of the Unitarian Universalist Midcoast Fellowship in Edgecomb. Elford Richardson died November 18, 1996.

Mrs. Richardson was predeceased by two sons, Elford Jr. in 1938 and David Thomas Richardson in 1980, both of cystic fibrosis.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Pearson, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, theRev. Peter Tufts and Eleanor Motley Richardson of Rockland, recentlyof Andover, Mass.; a daughter, Dorothy Ann Richardson of Glendale, California; a daughter-in-law, Rachel Richardson Zoller of Newcastle; sixgrandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 9, at 2 p.m. at the U.U. Fellowship, in the Edgecomb Town Hall with the Rev. David Cole officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, or the Midcoast U.U. Fellowship.

Arrangements are by the Burpee-Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.

Marjorie N. Richardson
2002-10-10

Marjorie Nichols Richardson of the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, died Monday, October 7. She was one month short of being 97 years old.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., she was the middle child of three daughters and grew up in Fall River, Mass.

As a child, she spent many summers at her great-aunt's home on Squirrel Island developing a lasting love for the Boothbay Harbor Region.

Mrs. Richardson graduated from Bridgewater State Teacher's College and Radcliffe College and met her future husband, Dr. Philip M. Richardson, at a summer school sponsored by Middlebury College in 1927. They spent two years in Waterville where he taught at Colby College. During that time they bought a summer cottage on Spruce Point in Boothbay Harbor where they spent future summers as their children grew up and to which they retired in 1968.

She was a true New England Yankee, a quiet, social activist and a real lady. During World War II she participated in a program offering at-home shelter for unmarried pregnant U.S. Armed Services women. After the death of her husband in 1972, she became active in the Meals-on-Wheels program in the Boothbay Harbor area and in programs for the Lincoln Home residents.

In 1992 she moved into the Lincoln Home and established herself as a world-class Scrabble player. Her Bridge foursome broke up only recently when no one at the table could remember how to keep score.

Survivors include two sons, Robert of Washington, Maine and Philip of Westfield, N.J.; as well as six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many dear and loving friends.

Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.
