Eugene C. Robbins Sr.
2002-05-15

Eugene C. Robbins, Sr., 58, died April 8 in Scarborough.

He wrote the "Gene's Outdoors" column for the Courier-Gazette of Rockland and the Maine Sportsmen. He was a registered Maine guide and ardent sportsmen.

He leaves his companion, Melissa; two sons, Jamie and Eugene Jr.; two daughters, Kimberly and Valerie; a stepdaughter, Lisa; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren.

Marian A. Roberts
2002-10-10

Marian A. Roberts, 75, died Sunday, October 6 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 16, 1926 in West Southport, she was the daughter of Edgar and Sadie Swim Huskins.

She graduated from Boothbay Region High School, class of 1945. She worked for King Cole Potato Chip factory in Boothbay Harbor.

In 1946 she married William Cushing and they made their home in Phippsburg. She moved back to Boothbay and went to work at St. Andrews Hospital in 1951. She worked for 37 years at the hospital in charge of laundry services until she retired.

Mrs. Roberts made many trips to Canada, including a trip last fall to Clarks Harbor, Nova Scotia to reunite with many of her family. She enjoyed close relationships with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting and especially visiting with friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Roberts; two sisters, Kathleen Bowers and Lillian Huskins; and one brother, Norman Huskins.

Survivors include a son, Charles E. Cushing of Boothbay Harbor; three grandchildren, Timothy E. Cushing of Boothbay, Arthur A. Cushing of South Bristol and Shane J. Cushing of Westport; five great-grandchildren, Troy and Rachael Cushing both of West Boothbay Harbor, and Ashley, Meagan, and Nichole Cushing, all of South Bristol; three brothers, Clifford Huskins of West Boothbay Harbor, Walter Huskins of St. Petersburg, Florida and Alfred Huskins of West Southport; three nieces, Evelyn Barton of Baltimore, Maryland, Nancy Grover of St. Petersburg, Florida and Jean Chenoweth of West Boothbay Harbor; two nephews, Eugene Huskins of Southport and Gary Huskins and his wife Jane of Gardiner; one grand niece, Kathie Stephenson of Windham; two grand nephews, Kenneth Barton of Baltimore, Maryland and David Barton, United States Army Airborne Ranger; many cousins and numerous other relatives from Canada.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marian's memory to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Helen K. Roberts
2002-02-21

Helen Korthals Altes "Bunny" Roberts, 87, died Friday, February 15 at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She was a long-time summer resident of East Boothbay.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of Carolyn Hull and William Korthals Altes.

She was schooled in The Netherlands and continued through the education system there until she received her master's degree in chemistry from the City University.

In 1940, after the fall of the Dutch government and during the period of U.S. neutrality, her father sent her and her sister back to their birthplace to wait out World War II.

In 1943 she married F. Morley Roberts. They shared a long and fruitful marriage until he died at age 98 in September 1999. The Robertses lived for many years in Schenectady where they raised three boys.

Mrs. Roberts served as a Cub Scout den mother for several years and as a PTA volunteer. She volunteered at the Schenectady Girls Club where she shared her knitting skills, offering workshops that became popular. She subsequently served several terms on the club's board of directors.

She was also an active member of the Queen's Fort, the Great Books Program, the Freedom Forum and the Fortnightly Club.

In 1966, as she and her husband were entering retirement, they purchased Overture, a 30-foot Down East cruiser. Their love of the coast brought them to East Boothbay where the boat had been built and where they, in turn, built a retirement cottage in 1970.

In 1980, the Robertses built a house of her design on the farm jointly owned by their three sons in Bacon Hill, located east of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. For many years, she and her husband split their time between Bacon Hill and East Boothbay.

Survivors include her three sons, David, Neil and Christopher; four grandchildren, a sister and two of her brothers.

A reception in her memory was held Wednesday, February 20 at the Open Space Gallery in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meinhardt Foundation, c/o Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 12866.

Arrangements are under the direction of Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, Schuylerville, N.Y.

Frances Robinson
2002-01-10

Frances (Catlin) Robinson, 59, of Granby, Connecticut, a summer resident of the Boothbay region and beloved wife of Collin R. Robinson, died Friday, January 4 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

Born in Augusta December 13, 1942, she was the daughter of Frances Catlin of Augusta and the late Byron Catlin.

She graduated from Gardiner High School in 1960 and lived in Berwick before moving to Granby 14 years ago.

She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Augusta and the Doberman Rescue League.

She was the owner and provider of day care for hundreds of children at her private nursery school, The Growing Room, for over 10 years. She also taught English and GED courses for adults.

Her many hobbies included gardening, reading, music and the rescue of Dobermans, abandoned animals, the preservation of wolves and whales and the care of all God's creatures.

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cristin and Eric Kominski; a granddaughter, Corinne, all of Chantilly, Virginia; two sisters, Emilyn Warming of Litchfield and Alliean Liebfried of Clinton, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 8 at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home in Granby, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Doberman Rescue League, P.O. Box 1911, Rochester, N.H. 03820-1911, or to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, Atlantic Highway, North Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Evertson Rogers
2002-09-12

Evertson (Jack) Rogers died Thursday, August 24 at Hallmark Nursing Home, Minoa, N.Y.

Born April 8, 1926 in New Haven, Conn., he was the son of Prof. Herbert Wesley and Dr. Margaret Evertson (Cobb) Rogers, of Newagen and Easton, Penn., where Mr. Rogers was raised and educated through high school.

His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he was a private in the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in France. After his discharge he completed his formal education at Boston University College, earning a BA in music. While at college he worked two summers at the Monhegan House and spent most of a third summer working part-time at the old fish factory in Boothbay Harbor during the late 1940s.

After graduation, he worked briefly as a desk clerk at the Parker House in Boston and then moved to Syracuse, N.Y. where he worked for 31 years in the ice cream business, first in sales and then in various office positions. In 1988 he retired form Borden's Ice Cream.

Mr. Rogers was a Master Mason in the Nortrip Lodge 998, Minoa and a member of the Minoa Methodist Church. For many years he was the organist and choir director at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in North Syracuse and at the Minoa Methodist Church.

Throughout his life he was a frequent summer visitor in Maine and in the Boothbay area, and to the family cabin overlooking Sheepscot Bay at Newagen. He also visited his late sister, Virginia E. (Rogers) Leonard and her husband, Joseph, frequently at their home in Boothbay. As a boy he attended several summer camps in Maine, among them the Bangor and the State YMCA camps.

Mr. Rogers was predeceased by his wife Barbara (Schrauth) who died in 1967.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Swanson and one granddaughter, Heather Martinez, both of East Syracuse, N.Y.; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles Morey Rogers and Virginia Davis (Hood) Rogers of Newagen and Crystal River, Fla.; five nieces and nephews, among them Phyllis and John Leonard of Boothbay; six grandnieces and grandnephews, among them Emma and Jack Leonard of Boothbay.

Services were held in Minoa, N.Y. on August 29 and 30. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio.

George D. Rankin Jr.
2003-08-07

George D. Rankin Jr., 95, died of old age at St. Andrews Village on Monday, July 28.

He was born June 1, 1908 in his aunt's home in East Rutherford, N.J. He was the only child of George D. and Daisy Phair Rankin of Cranford, N.J.

Mr. Rankin graduated from Yale University in 1932 and went to work in New York City, selling hosiery with his father. After a year in a white shirt and tie, he quit, packed a suitcase, and drove his Model A Ford to Mexico, where he toured the back country taking photographs for a commercial photographer in St. Louis.

In 1935, he drove to Texas where he met and later married Edith "Bootie" Edgar. When he moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1937, he opened Quick Pix Photo Shop and later, worked at the Bath Iron Works during World War II. He moved the family to San Bernardino, California in 1944, but returned to Southport in 1949, where he remained until moving to the Gregory Wing in 1993.

He pursued photography all his life, both as a hobby and a profession. He had a wonderful memory and a keen interest in people which he put to good use as a member of the 98th, 99th, and 101st Maine Legislatures.

Survivors include his son, George Rankin III, of Colorado; and two grandchildren, Anne and Patrick Rankin.

His ashes will be interred in a family plot on the Decker cemetery on Southport.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Madeleine F. Reed
2003-08-28

Madeleine Fisher Reed, 87, of Manchester, died Wednesday, August 20, at Maine General Rehabilitation & Nursing Care, Graybirch, Augusta.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on Sept. 6, 1915, she was the daughterof John and Helen (Bullock) Fisher. Mrs. Reed graduated from Girls Latin School in Boston. Shortly afterher marriage to Vincent C. Reed on Sept. 6, 1937, she and her husband moved to Maine to raise their family. They resided in Wiscasset until moving to West Gardiner in 1970.

In October of 1942, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Garrison Hill Chapter #158. After serving in several appointed offices, she was elected Worthy Matron for the first time in 1946-47, and again in 1981 and 1984. In 1970 she was appointed Grand Warder of the Grand Chapter by Sister Gladys Raeside W.G.M. She was elected Associate Grand Conductress of the Grand Chapter of Maine in 1974 and served as Worthy Grand Matron with Brother Donald Pierce in 1977-78. She was honored by an appointment to the HeartFoundation of the General Grand Chapter in 1982, and became a member of Crescent Chapter #54 in East Boothbay with the merger of those two chapters in 1996. She and her husband, a Past Grand Patron in 1990-91, traveled extensively to Chapter meetings in Maine and the surrounding jurisdictions until Mr. Reed's death in 1991.

Mrs. Reed was predeceased by her husband; two brothers, John andGeorge Fisher; and a sister, Ruth Anderson. Survivors include her son, Charles Reed, and his wife Susan, of Manchester; her daughter, Deborah Camporiale, and her husband Tony, of At-lanta, Georgia; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and severalnieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Mrs. Reed's life was held Monday, August 25, at the Manchester Community Church, with Rev. Ernie Johnson officiating. She will be buried next to her husband in Gracelawn Memorial Park at a later date.

James A. Reed Sr.
2003-05-08

James A. Reed Sr., 84, formerly of Corning, N.Y., died Thursday, May 1 in Fransican Manor Assisted Living, Patterson Township, Penn.

Mr. Reed was educated in the Boothbay region schools and was a graduate of the University of Maine, College of Engineering. He later served in the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa and Europe.

In 1981 he retired from Ingersoll Rand Company in Painted Post, N.Y after 35 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sibyl (Rumley) and a brother Leland Reed.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and John Boody of Staunton, Va., and Nancy and Dr. Nick Tapyrik of Center Township; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James A. Jr. and Rita Reed of Corning, N.Y., David and Janet Reed of Coventry, R.I., and Allen Reed of Villa Hills, Ky.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Chester Reed of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family, with Interment to follow in Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

Philip L. Reynolds Sr.
2003-02-27

Philip L. Reynolds Sr., of Belmont, Mass., died Sunday, February 23.

He was the husband of the late Barbara (MacGowan) Reynolds.

He is survived by five daughters, Joan O'Rourke and her husband, James, of Bedford, Mass., Marcia Sutton of Belmont, Mass., Susan Brown of Boothbay Harbor; Kate Kraska and her husband, Richard, of Naples, Florida; and Betsy Cargill of Belmont, Mass.; two sons, Philip Reynolds Jr., of Newcastle and David Reynolds and his wife, Carole, of Waltham, Mass. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Reynolds' memory to a charity of one's choice.
