Barbara P. Simpson

Barbara P. Arnall Simpson, 75, of Murphy, North Carolina, formerly of Englewood, Florida, died Sunday, March 26 in Asheville, North Carolina. born in Boothbay Harbor on August 10, 1924, she moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1946. She went to Englewood in 1956 from Venice, where she and her late husband, Robert "Bob" Arnall, owned and operated several Jiffy Stop convenient stores for over 25 years in the south county area and were founders of the Nice Ice Company in Englewood.

Mrs. Simpson was an active member of the Englewood United Methodist Church, a past Girl Scout leader for 15 years, a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Elk's Does, all of Englewood.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, John W. Simpson of Murphy, North Carolina; a son, Robert N. Arnall Jr. of Bath; four daughters, Alys K. Arnall of Sarasota, Joyce A. Matherly, Marilyn L. "Mimi" Arnall, Jane M. Arnall, all of Englewood; stepdaughters, Shirleyan Page and Joann Stowers; a stepson, Jay W. Simpson, all of Sarasota; a sister, Katherine Norwood; a brother, Raymond Poole, both of South Bristol; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Friday, March 31 at the Old Englewood United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Barbara P. Arnall Simpson, c/o Lemon Bay Historical Society, P.O. Box 1245, Englewood, FL 34239. Lemon Bay Funeral Home Englewood Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Reynolds
2003-05-08

Mary Reynolds, 75, died April 22 at Central Maine Medical Center with her family by her side.

Born August 30, 1927 in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of Michael and Lucy Renzi.

Mrs. Reynolds was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was also active in the Lions Club in Westminster, Mass. and the Disabled American Veterans in Fitchburg, Mass. She enjoyed doing charitable work for the Fitchburg Center for Brain Injured Children.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Raymond Reynolds.

Survivors include her daughter, Crystal Ashland of Boothbay Harbor; stepchildren, Raymond Reynolds of Sacramento, Calif., Belle Bruse of Gloversville, N.Y. and Edward Webster of Eau Clair, Wis.; two sisters; three brothers; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Judy Ann Rich
2003-09-05

Judy Ann Rich, 61, of Gray, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, died Sunday, August 31, 2003, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Willard W. and Evelyn Brockett Rice. She was raised and educated in Portland.

Judy had been employed by Blue Cross, Blue Shield, the Health Tex Co. and The Winter People Co.

She was a doting grandmother to her grandson and she was always there to help others in need.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 97, Ladies Auxiliary and an avid horseback rider and drag racer.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence C. Rich of Gray; two daughters, Lorie Rich of Portland, and Denise Tate of Saco; a grandson, David White, Jr., of Saco; sons-in-law, Paul Tate and Michael Nappi; a brother, Willard Rice of Gray and a sister, Virginia Whittier of Windham; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by the Blais & Hay Funeral Home, Westbrook. Burial was in Saco.

Madeline Dudley Richmond, 96
2003-04-11

Madeline Dudley Richmond, 96, formerly of Gray, died April 2, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce and her husband, D.E. Scott O'Donnell, formerly of Gray, of Standish.

Graveside services will be private.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Virginia P. Rines
2003-08-28

Virginia Pearl (Butler) Rines died Thursday, August 21 surrounded by her family at Mid Coast Senior Health Care in Brunswick.

Born in Fort Fairfield December 17, 1925, she was the daughter of Dorothy M. Brown and Merle Butler and the stepdaughter of Robert "Freddy" Fulton.

She graduated valedictorian of Wiscasset Academy Class of 1944. She was the loving wife of Benjamin L. Rines, marrying him on his 19th birthday October 8, 1944.

Mrs. Rines attended Pelletier's School of Beauty in Lewiston. For a number of years she sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry in the mid-coast area and later owned and operated Ginny's Gift Shop and Cannon Factory Outlet in Wiscasset.

She was past president of the Wiscasset Mother's Club, served as a town ballot clerk for many years, a member of both the American Legion Auxiliary in Wiscasset and the Wiscasset Fireman's Auxiliary and a former member of the Rebeccas.

Mrs. Rines was a great cook who loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and having big family gatherings, especially Christmas Eve and planning that event all year long.

Survivors include her husband, of 58 years, Benjamin L. Rines Sr., of Wiscasset; one daughter, Pamela H. Soule and her husband Sam of Westport Island; six sons, Larry Rines and his wife Carolann, Ben Rines Jr., Robert Rines and his wife Janet, Peter Rines, Mark Rines and his wife Lori and Ray Rines all of Wiscasset; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset on Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. A gathering of family and friends followed at the Wiscasset High School cafeteria. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

James E. Robertson
2003-11-13

James E. (Red) Robertson, 80 of Westport Island, died Saturday, November 8 at Mid Coast Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Los Angeles, California February 1, 1923, he was the son of Leslie and Leona Beck Robertson. He attended local schools there and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School class of 1940. He then entered the United States Navy.

On May 22, 1954, he married Elizabeth A. Munset and they made their home in California.

For over 30 years, Mr. Robertson worked as an engineer for Lockheed Aircraft. In 1994 he and his wife moved to Maine so they could be closer to their family.

In his spare time, he loved building model airplanes and flying them and also building model ships. He loved to read, especially history and biology books. His biggest enjoyment was spending time with his family and especially his granddaughter.

Mr. Robertson was a volunteer at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and was a member of the Westport Island Volunteer Fire Department.

He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years in October of 1996.

Survivors include his son, James F. (Rusty) and his wife Debra, and granddaughter, Kelsey M. Robertson, all of Westport Island.

At the family's request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 13 at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove cemetery with entrance between the ponds off Oak Grove Avenue.

Those who wish may make contributions in Mr. Robertson's memory to the Westport Volunteer Fire Department, Route 144, Westport Island, ME 04578.

Audrey E. Robinson
1999-12-30

Audrey E. (Maddocks) Robinson, 69, of Auburn, Massachusetts, died Thursday, December 23 in the Meadows of Leicester, Leicester, Massachusetts after a short illness.

Born in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of Harmon R. And Catherine G. (McLaughlin) Maddocks and was raised in Boothbay Harbor. She was a graduate of Katherine Dell School in Boston.

Mrs. Robinson was the administrative assistant for the Dean of Students and previously the Dean of Men at Holy Cross College for 32 years, retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the Pakachoag Community Church, the Auburn Republican Town Committee, the National Secretaries Association, and was awarded their Secretary of the Year award several years ago. She was an avid walker and had won the Governor's Cup Race twice in her age group.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Lewis W. Robinson; two sons, Scott H. and John T. Robinson, both of Auburn, Mass.; a daughter, Elaine J. Robinson of Auburn, Mass.; two brothers, Sewall T. Maddocks of Boothbay, and Harmon "Ross" Maddocks Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; a grandson; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 27 at the First Congregational Church in Auburn, Mass. Burial followed in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustergarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, c/o the DeMattics Center, Northern Blvd., Old Brookville, NY 11545.

Ann S. Rockhill
2003-10-16

Ann S. Rockhill, 97, of Alna, died Tuesday, September 16 at the Frost-Inman House in Round Pond where she had lived for the past two years.

Born in New York City, she was a daughter of Lewis and Sarah Stryck.

For many years she worked as a legal secretary and was an active member of the League of Women Voters and a dedicated volunteer at Creedmoor State Hospital. In 1941 she married Robert A. Rockhill.

Her love of Maine began on vacations spent with her family in Cape Rosier on Penobscot Bay. In 1974 she moved to Alna.

Mrs. Rockhill is predeceased by her husband, and her son, Anthony M. Rockhill.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan R. Marcus of Alna; one daughter-in-law, Elizabeth C. Rockhill of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Anthony M. Rockhill of Colorado, Judith Ann Rockhill of Maryland, Sarah A. Briggs of Massachusetts and Simon R. Marcus of New York City; and four great-grandchildren.

Services at the Alna cemetery on September 27 were private.

Donations in her memory may be made to Miles Memorial Hospital.

Capt. Arno M. Rogers
2003-12-25

Captain Arno M. Rogers, 82, of Alna passed away on December 18 at Togus. There will be no services.

Donations may be made to the Maine Veterans Hospital, Voluntary Services, 1 VA Center, Togus, Maine 04330. Burial will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.
