E. Dean Romig
2003-01-23

E. Dean Romig, 80, husband of Grace (Sherman) Romig, died Thursday, January 16 following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born November 23, 1922 in South Greensburg, Penn., he was the son of the late James and Mary (Baker) Romig.

Mr. and Mrs. Romig lived in Boothbay Harbor for the last 18 years after having raised their family in both Danvers and Reading, Mass.

Mr. Romig graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, class of 1945, with a degree in aeronautical engineering.

He was a retired Naval officer and served during World War II. Following his active duty he served in the Naval Air Reserve for 20 years.

Employed in Boston as an electrical engineer, he designed the electrical systems for many buildings including the New England Aquarium and the original Hynes Auditorium.

Besides his wife Grace of Boothbay Harbor, he is survived by four sons, Christopher and his wife Elizabeth of North Reading, Mass., Dean and his wife Katherine of Andover, Mass., Jonathan and his wife Linda Lichtman of Cambridge, Mass., and Stevan and his wife Debra Wexler-Romig of Framingham, Mass.; also by five grandchildren; a step-grand-son; and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Romig was the youngest of seven brothers and one sister who had all predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held at the Joseph Doherty Funeral Home, 11 Linden Street in Reading, Mass. on Friday, January 23 at 8:15 p.m., with pre-service visiting at 7 p.m. Interment will be held in Maine at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may contribute in Mr. Romig's name to the National Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME.

Mary M. Ross
2003-04-17

Mary M. Ross, 78, of Bad Axe, Michigan, died Thursday, April 10 at her home following an extended illness. She grew up and summered at Ocean Point.

Born on July 10, 1924 in Augusta, she was the daughter of the late Burleigh and Frances (Purinton) Martin.

On September 8, 1945 she married Todd (Andrew) Ross in Augusta. He preceded her in death in October of 1989.

Mrs. Ross was a former member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church, the Child Study Club Group 4 of Bad Axe, and the Bad Axe Bridge Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Gail Ross of Bad Axe, Michigan; one son, Christopher Ross of Chassell, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Ann Ross of Holt, Michigan and Beverly Martin of Boothbay Harbor; four grandchildren; four nieces and four nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, there were no visitation or services. Memorials may be offered to the Bad Axe Public Library or the Ocean Point Colony Trust.

Interment will be in Forest Grove cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements were made by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe, Michigan.

Amy D. Russell
2003-07-31

Amy D. Russell, 82, of Boothbay died Friday, July 25 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born October 13, 1920 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Theodore and Evelyn Pottle. She grew up in the Boothbay region and attended local schools.

On April 28, 1962, she married Charles Russell in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. They worked summers in the Boothbay region and winters in Florida for a few years before moving permanently to Boothbay in 1969. She also worked cleaning houses on Ocean Point for many years.

She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Effingham, Ill.

She enjoyed taking boat rides, working in her yard and keeping her house nice.

Mrs. Russell was predeceased by her husband Charles Russell in 1997, and by two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Webber of Effingham, Ill. and Clifford C. Webber of Anderson, Fla.; two grandchildren, Chris Webber of Souderton, Penn.. And Lisa Webber of Swanksville, Penn.; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, July 30 at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. The Rev. Mary Jo Zimmerli officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Russell's memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 16 Corey Lane, Boothbay, ME 04537 or to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Laura Jean Rittall
2004-11-18

Laura Jean Rittall, 41, of Boothbay, passed away at her home with her family by her side on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Born in Winchester, Massachusetts on October 12, 1963, she was the daughter of Matthew John and Judith (Mahoney) Andrews.

She was a graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, class of 1981 and from the University of Southern Maine with a BS Degree in Nursing. Her desire to become a nurse was a childhood dream. She worked at Maine General Medical Center on the Maternal and Child Health Department (what Laura called the "Happy Floor") for over 13 years before retiring due to her progressing illness. She truly enjoyed her co-workers and considered them to be her extended family.

Mrs. Rittall was a spirited individual with a tremendous imagination and lots of energy. Her spirited nature brought out the best in everyone. She loved entertaining around the holidays, especially Halloween with the "Hay Rides" on the family's Salt River farm in Boothbay. She was an avid gardener, and also enjoyed serving up ice cream, her own strawberry jam, and home baked goods at the farm stand which she and her husband operated for many years.

Until her last days, she was a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness.

She was predeceased by her father, Matthew John Andrews.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Rittall, of Boothbay; her mother and stepfather, Judith and James O'Mara, of Jonesport; her brother, Sean Andrews and his wife, Kimberly, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; her sister, Kathryn Dyer and her friend, Mark Reagan, of Danvers, Mass.; her stepbrother, James O'Mara and his wife, Heidi, of N. Andover, Mass.; her stepsisters, Mary O'Mara of Farmingdale and Elizabeth Houghton and her husband, Walter, of Londonderry, N.H.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joan and Chetley Rittall, of Boothbay; her sister-in-law, Susan Papineau, of Boothbay Harbor; her aunt, Carol Andrews Hovis, of Costa Rica; and her nieces and nephews, Haley Marie Dyer, Amber Rose and Matthew Sean Andrews, and Nathan and Brian Papineau.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, November 15 at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Augusta, with Rev. Brian Blanchette, Celebrant. Committal prayers and burial followed at St. Mary's cemetery in Manchester.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Rittall's memory to Maine General Medical Center, c/o Philanthropy Office, 30 Chase Ave., Waterville 04901, to benefit the Maternal & Child Health Dept. at the Augusta Campus.

Charles L. Roche
2004-07-29

Charles Louis Roche, 72, of Westport Island, died Saturday, July 24, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Watertown, Mass. on June 10, 1932, he was the son of Arthur J. and A. Evelyn (Hanley) Roche.

He attended Newton schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1951. In 1952 he entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in December of 1954. In the mid '50s he graduated from Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry. He then served in the United States Army Reserves for several years.

Mr. Roche was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Newcastle.

He enjoyed the outdoors, cutting and stacking wood, walking and boating.

Survivors include three brothers, Arthur J. Roche and his wife Margaret of Solana Beach, Calif., John A. Roche and his wife Maureen and William F. Roche, all of Westport Island; two sisters, Nancy Shea-Pearson of Westport Island, and Evelyn G. Manning and her husband John J. of Waldoboro; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, July 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Newcastle with Father Ray Picard officiating. Burial followed in St. Patrick's cemetery in Newcastle.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westport Island Volunteer Fire Dept., Route 144, Westport Island, ME 04578, or the Human Resource Committee Fund, c/o Westport Island Town Office, Fowles Point Road, Westport Island, ME 04578.

Katherine C. Richards
2004-09-09

Katherine C. Richards, 66, of Edgecomb, died Thursday, September 2 at Cove's Edge skilled nursing unit, under the care of Hospice.

Born in Hon, Arkansas on April 7, 1938, she was the daughter of Hattie (Perkins) and Anton Supon.

She attended school in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass High School.

In 1956 she married Francis Richards and was a mother and housewife for almost 48 years.

Mrs. Richards was predeceased by a sister, Rita Webster, and two brothers, Eldred Supon and Robert Supon.

Survivors include her husband, Francis Richards of Edgecomb; two sons, Danver of Edgecomb and Jeffry Richards and his wife Dolores of Adelanto, Calif.; one daughter, Angela Richards of Edgecomb; one grandson, Tyler Richards of Edgecomb; and one granddaughter, Danielle of Topsham; one brother Paul Supon of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sisters, Una Roche of Hulbert, Okla. and Ruth Vinson of Baxter, Tenn.; numerous nephews and nieces.

There will be no funeral services at her request.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Miles Home Health Care (Hospice), 40 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Elizabeth A. Reynolds
2004-04-08

Elizabeth A. Reynolds died at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, April 3. She was a resident of St. Andrews Village almost from its inception.

Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island, Aril 25, 1908, she attended public schools there and then attended Bryant Business College, now Bryant College, graduating in 1928.

Miss Reynolds taught in the high school of Plainville, Mass., and later in Whitman until she moved to Springfield, Mass. to work at Brooks Banknote Company, owned by Joshua Brooks, who also was the owner of the Newagen Inn.

She spent her summers working at Newagen Inn as a member of the staff and thereby became a summer resident of the Boothbay area.

After Mr. Brooks' death, Worcester Federal Savings & Loan, chaired by Mr. Raymond Harald, who also owned the Spruce Point Inn, employed her. Again she spent her winters in Springfield and her summers at Spruce Point as reservations manager.

She retired after several years, but her idea of retirement was to increase her active role in a large number community activities including St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle as a communicant and a member of the chorus, the Lincoln Arts Festival and Chorus, the Monday Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and the YMCA. She was happy in her many activities and in her generous charitable interests. She was also a serviceable woman who loved to help people.

Survivors include twin nephews, Richard M. Cadwgan, and Gordon Cadwgan Jr.; one niece, Carol Lavell; and her brother-in-law, Gordon Cadwgan Sr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newcastle. Mr. Stephen White will officiate.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Philip L. Reynolds Jr.
2004-09-09

Philip L. Reynolds Jr., 69, of Newcastle, died Wednesday, August 18 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after an extended illness.

Born April 22, 1935 in Dover, N.H., he was the son of Philip and Barbara Reynolds.

Thirty years ago, he moved to Newcastle from Massachusetts, and enjoyed his life living in Maine.

He served in the U.S. Armed Forces as a United States Marine. He was a boiler maintenance technician by trade.

Mr. Reynolds was predeceased by his daughter, Marsha Reynolds; a grandson, Bobby Reynolds; and a sister, Marcia Stutton.

Survivors include sisters, Betsy Cargill of Belmont, Mass, Susan Brown of Boothbay Harbor, Joan O'Rurke of Bedford, Mass., and Kate Kraska of Naples, Fla.; one brother, David Reynolds of Waltham, Mass.; one granddaughter, Michelle Reynolds of Portland; special friend, Julie Bryer of Boothbay; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday, August 21 at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church with the Rev. Mary Jo Zimmerli officiating. A committal service was held at the Pine Hall cemetery in Dover, N.H.

Donations may be made to the Boothbay Harbor YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
