Douglas A. Remley
2004-10-07

Douglas Alan Remley, 58, passed away Thursday, September 30, at Mid Coast Hospital after a long illness.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, he later lived in Illinois and New York.He had been visiting the coast of Maine since 1973 and finally settled in East Boothbay in 1984.

Mr. Remley was a graduate of the University of Michigan and a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran. Most people would remember him, however, for his extraordinary artistic talent.His oil paintings and watercolors of typical Maine scenes are photographic in the details.

He enjoyed good music, and books, and would always let someone know if he had seen a good movie lately. He was an avid sailor and some years ago had even built his own catamaran, upon which he took his young wife on theirhoneymoon in 1980.

Survivors include his daughter Caroline, son-in-law Sinclair Jones and grandson Kievan Jones of Portland. He also leaves a sister, Martha, her husband George Snow, and her daughter Sara Boston, all of Florida, New York.

A gathering was held on Sunday, October 3, to celebrate his life.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Remley's name to the American Legion Post #36, P.O. Box #874, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

John A. Reed
2004-10-21

John A. Reed, 78, of Sebastian Fla., died Friday, Oct. 8, at Sebastian Medical Center.

Born in Winchester, Mass., as a very young child he moved to Boothbay. In 1948, he graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School after having served time in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army.He graduated from Burdett College in Boston in 1951.

Mr. Reed ran his own company in Manchester, N.H., Granite StateBusiness Forms.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sebastian and was a Mason. He was the nephew of the late Roy and Eunice Kelley, former owners of the Boothbay Register.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mary; son, John Reed Jr. of New London, N.H.; a daughter, Kelly Gagnon of Westbrook; five grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Waldo Burnham and his wife Carolyn.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his infant son, Michael and his sister, Priscilla Burnham.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 13 at the First United Methodist Church, in Sebastian, Fla.

Leontine M. Reed
2004-09-16

Leontine McAfee Reed, 66, passed away Friday, September, 10, at her residence in Wiscasset.

Born in Bath on May 3, 1938, she was the daughter of Robert and Mabel Knapp McAfee. In 1956 she graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School

In April of 1960, she married Robie Reed. They made their home in Boothbay Harbor where together they raised five children.

She moved to Wiscasset in 1972 and fulfilled a lifetime dream of running her own antique shop, the Maine Seasons Shoppe.

She enjoyed working on Genealogy and Numerology. She also enjoyed oil painting, Most recently she enjoyed creating keepsakes with cross stitching designs for family and friends.

A great joy to her was the birth of her granddaughter, Erica Nightingale, and the three years she was able to share with her. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends.

She was predeceased by her father, Robert McAfee.

Survivors include, Mother Mabel Knapp McAfee, of Wiscasset; one daughter, Bella Nightingale and husband, Todd, of Edgecomb; one son, Daniel Reed of Wiscasset; three stepsons, Robin Reed of Boothbay, Eric Reed of New Jersey, and Michael Reed of South Carolina; one sister, Cheryl Welton, of Washington State; one brother, Glenn McAfee of Wiscasset, 11 step-grandchildren; and one granddaughter, Erica Nightingale of Edgecomb; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, September 16, at Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home.

Dwight I. Reed
2004-08-19

Dwight I. "Chub" Reed, 74, died Sunday, August 15 at his home in Mexico, Maine.

He was born in Boothbay on May 23, 1930, a son of Charles Parker and Delia Mae (Kelley) Reed, and had attended Boothbay Harbor Schools.

For over 40 years he had been employed at Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford until retirement as a 1st Class Millwright in the late 1980s.

Mr. Reed was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Company 25 & 40 Year Club. He served as a Boy Scout Leader for troops at the Mexico Congregational Church and at St. Theresa Church for several years. He loved his family and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting. He was also an avid gun and knife collector.

On September 15, 1948 he married the former Natalie Frances Avery in Rumford.

Survivors include his wife, Natalie Frances Avery Reed of Mexico; three daughters, Alayne F. Reed of Mexico, Julie A. Reed of Mexico, and Kelley J. Arsenault and companion Rene Lee of So. Rumford; four sons, Thomas K. Reed and wife Barbara of Freeport, C. Wesley Reed and wife Martha of Vinalhaven, Charles L. Reed and wife Pamela of Mechanic Falls, and Herbert "Skip" Reed of Mexico; 12 grandchildren; one step-grandson; two great-granddaughters; and one brother, F. Robie Reed of Boothbay Harbor. He was predeceased by a brother Charles P. Reed II.

At his request there are no public calling hours, but friends are invited to attend a Celebration of His Life 1 p.m. Saturday, August 21 at the Mexico Congregational Church in Mexico, with Rev. Virginia Snapp-Cunningham officiating. Interment will be at the Demeritt Cemetery, West Peru.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Mexico Congregational Church or the Food Cupboard at the church, Main Street, Mexico, ME 04257 in Mr. Reed's memory.

Mary T. Reed
2004-04-29

Mary Thompson Reed, 72, of Wiscasset, died Sunday April 25 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.

Born March 9, 1932 in Port Clyde, she was the daughter of Weston and Amy Benner Thompson. She attended schools in New Harbor and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High class of 1950. In her youth, she lived on Matinicus Island with her parents.

She was employed as a secretary with the Boothbay Register for seven years, and was a store clerk with Grover's Hardware, First National Store and Colonial Market, all in Boothbay Harbor.

The daughter of a lighthouse- keeper, she loved the Maine coast from Boothbay Harbor to Bar Harbor, its islands and lighthouses. She also enjoyed cooking, beano, card games, using the internet and camping with her husband.

She is predeceased by her husband Ethan Reed Jr., who died in 1993. Survivors include a son Daniel C. Reed and wife Cindy of Bath; one daughter, Deborah Wickert of Dresden; one sister, Caroline Simmons of Rockland; grandchildren, Regan, Jacob, Heather and Katie; one great-grandchild; close friend and neighbor, Jean Hoak, of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 30 at the Oaklawn Cemetery, Boothbay, with Al Roberts officiating.

Donations may be made to American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, Inc., 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

George W. Range
2004-06-03

George W. Range 64, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died in Portland, Oregon on May 15.

He was born Nov. 7, 1939, in Portland, Oregon. He was raised in Portland where he helped his parents at their roller rink soda fountain and became a championship figure roller skater as a teenager.

He achieved a B.S. degree from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, and married his college sweetheart. They raised two daughters. He received his M.A. from University of Oregon and became an English and math teacher at two high schools in Oregon. He taught college English and humanities courses at the Oregon Institute of Technology where he also gave classical piano recitals.

Mr. Range lived in San Francisco in the 1970s, where he divorced and pursued a Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics at the University of California, Berkely. He then moved to the east coast. He was an executive assistant in New York City where he lived in Greenwich Village and Chelsea for 20 years.

He was an avid square dancer and served on the Board of the Times Squares club. He was also a member of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus. George was an organist and pianist for many churches, and a dance-band and cabaret accompanist for events and performers throughout his life.

When he moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1998, he helped start and run two local restaurants and a B&B. Most recently, he was choir director and organist for the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

His lifetime volunteerism included teaching literacy to adults, especially to disadvantaged and minority people. He was active in the Civil Rights and Peace Movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and the anti-nuclear arms race in the 1980s. He was also President of the Oregon ACLU and served on the national board of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He moved back to his childhood home to live with his daughter and family in Portland, Oregon during the last months of his illness of Alzheimer's Disease.

Survivors include his partner, Douglas Light of Boothbay Harbor; daughters, Janet Range of Portland, Oregon and Carolyn Range of Long Beach, Calif.; a brother, Walter Range of Tomball, Texas; a sister, Marilyn McCabe of Portland, Oregon; and four grandchildren, Jonathan, Carsyn, Kaia and Nigel.

A memorial service was held in Portland, Oregon on May 29. Mr. Range will also be remembered on June 13 during Choir Sunday at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Remembrances to Friends of Music of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor and to the Alzheimer's Association.

Marie Rand dies
2004-09-17

Marie Rand, 52, died September 13 at an Ellsworth health care facility after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Michael E. Rand, of Gray.

She was born in Cumberland, a daughter of Waldron F. and Gertrude N. (Tibbetts) Ashley.

Marie was a drag-car driver for seven years, and especially loved winning against men. She was also an air emergency pilot for many years.

Marie enjoyed baking, sewing and doing for others. She was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts, and was a Tiger Cub Leader, Secretary and Assistant Cub Master. She was a member of the Maine Coast Baptist Church in Ellsworth.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Mark and Michael Rand, of Spokane, WA; two sisters, Trudy Foster, of Gray, and Maureen Arsenault, of Lamoine; three brothers, Mark Ashley, of Gray, Marshall Ashley, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Frank Ashley, of Connecticut; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 19, from 2 to 4 P.M. at Wilson Funeral Home, Gray; memorial services will be held at the same time at the Maine Coast Baptist Church, the Rev. Gerry Dill officiating. Gifts in memory of Marie may be sent to the Mary Dow Center, 50 Union Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Laurence V. Radtke
2004-03-25

Laurence V. Radtke D.D.S. F.A.C.D., of Bucksport, died Sunday, March 14 at a Bangor hospital.

Born January 7, 1932, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Laurence V. and Margaret (Benedict) Radtke.

Dr. Radtke graduated from Summit High School in Summit, N.J. in 1950, Dickinson College, Carlisle, Penn, in 1954, and the St. Louis University Dental School in 1961, with honors.

Dr. Radtke served in the U.S. Army earning the rank of 1st Lt.

For 32 years, he had a successful dental practice in Berkeley Heights, N.J., retiring to Maine in 1994.

He enjoyed fishing at his camp on Branch Pond, which he built in 1970. He was a longtime member of the New Providence United Methodist Church in New Providence, N.J., and a member of the Orland United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee and on the P.P.R.C. He belonged to the Rotary clubs in New Jersey and Ellsworth and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Congdon Overlook Masonic Lodge No. 163 AF & AM in Basking Ridge, N.J., and the Felicity Masonic Lodge No. 19 AF & AM in Bucksport. Dr. Radtke was a volunteer valet parker at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, and enjoyed playing the trumpet in the Brewer Hometown Band.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Martha A. (Farner) Radtke of Bucksport; four children, Carol Archdeacon and husband Chuck of Asbury, N.J., David Radtke and fiancée Evelyn Norton of Southport, Andrew Radtke of Lansdale, Penn., and Thomas Radtke and wife Claire of Washington, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Daniel and Kathleen Archdeacon, Amanda Foerster, Cagney Archdeacon, Rebecca and Alexa Radtke, Jordan Radtke, Jacob and Kristen Norton; one great-granddaughter, Julie Foerster; one sister, Jean M. Peotter of New Providence, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in New Jersey at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Radtke's memory may be made to the New Providence United Methodist Church, 1441 Springfield Ave., New Providence, NJ 07974, and/or to the Orland United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 81, Orland, ME 04472.
