Isabelle C. Wilson, 94

FALMOUTH – Isabelle C. Wilson, 94, of Gray Road, died Oct. 22 at the Hawthorne House in Freeport. She was born June 23, 1912, in Portland, a daughter of Alton and Helen Peterson Riley. She attended Portland schools. In 1932, she married Frederic C. Wilson and was married for 66 years at the time of his passing. She was a member of the Falmouth Congregational Church, the Pythian Sisters and the Holiday Ramblers Association. She was predeceased by her husband and her brother, Carl P. Riley. She is survived by a nephew, Carl P. Riley Jr. of Newburyport, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Vernon W. Wilson of Provincetown, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Carroll M. Wilson Sr. and his wife Norma of Falmouth. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Hawthorne House and Beacon Hospice for their care and compassion. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 26 at Falmouth Congregational Church, 267 Falmouth Rd., with the Rev. Dawn Berry officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove cemetery in Falmouth. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Falmouth Congregational Church, 267 Falmouth Rd., Falmouth, Maine 04105.

Grace Brescia, 45

FREEPORT – Grace Martha Jepson Brescia dedicated herself to creating many wonderful family memories for her children. Brescia, 45, died at home, surrounded by family, on Oct. 21 after a valiant six-year battle with breast cancer. She was born Dec. 30, 1960 in Caribou, the second of five children to Clyde and Lina (Cyr) Jepson of New Sweden. A 1979 graduate of Caribou High School, Brescia graduated from Dartmouth College in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She attended Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., in the master’s program for marriage and family counseling. In 1984, she married Michael Brescia, a high school classmate and the love of her life. Professionally, she worked in fund raising for Vassar College, Duke University, and most recently Bowdoin College. At the same time, she supported her husband’s career and they built a wonderful life together. As a volunteer, Brescia served on the Parish Council for St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Freeport, was a member of the church choir and was head of the annual church Christmas Fair and other parish events. She served on the board of directors at St. John’s Catholic School in Brunswick, was a member of the board of the Midcoast Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Brunswick Rotary Club. Her greatest pride was being a wife and mother. In recent years, Brescia and her family enjoyed frequent travel together, including annual trips to Florida as well as numerous peaceful summer days at their cottage on Embden Pond. She loved to laugh, to watch her children grow, to spend time with family, to visit the family farm in New Sweden and to give of herself to others. Brescia developed extraordinary friendships during her life and these were a great comfort to her throughout her illness. Motivated by love for her family, she demonstrated incredible courage and strength throughout her struggle, and did so with grace and dignity. Brescia is survived by her devoted husband, Michael Brescia, son Dominic and daughter Margaret (Maggie); her parents, Clyde and Lina Jepson of New Sweden; three sisters, Lisa Wahlstrom and her husband Jeff of Bangor, Sheila Jepson and her husband Rick Lynch of Portland and Dawn Moreau and her husband Claude of Vernon, Conn.; one brother, Todd Jepson and his wife Lael of Portland; her father- and mother-in-law, Richard and Elizabeth Brescia of Newport; two sisters-in-law, Teresa Duplisea of Bangor and Colleen Brescia of Portland; two brothers-in-law; Richard Brescia and his wife Brigette of Brunswick and Phillip Brescia and his wife Anissa of Ocala, Fla.; and nephews and nieces Carl and Nils Wahlstrom, Jacques and Elise Moreau, Couper Jepson, Matthew, Alexandra and Christopher Duplisea, Ryan and Madeline Brescia, Jonathan Brescia and Jennifer and Jessica Nisbett. Relatives and friends may attend calling hours at the Brackett Funeral Home, Federal Street in Brunswick on Friday, Oct. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, corner of Main and School streets in Freeport on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the church. Robert L. Davis, 65

BATH – Robert L. Davis, 65, of Washington Street, formerly of Boothbay Harbor and Edgecomb, died Oct. 17 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in Boothbay Harbor on March 2, 1941, a son of Robert W. and Geraldine Constance Davis. He attended local schools and was a fisherman most of his life. An avid Red Sox fan, he also enjoyed playing poker and cribbage and betting on the horses. Davis is predeceased by a sister, Jean Davis. He is survived by two sons, Carl Davis of Livermore Falls and Charles Berry of Brunswick; three daughters, Susan Davis of Vermont, Jennifer Davis of Litchfield and Mariah Bonney of Brunswick; a brother, George Davis of Harpswell; a sister, Sally Sherman of Boothbay Harbor; and six grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brunswick. Arrangements are under the care of the Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.

Elise Marie Johnson, 77

BATH – Elsie Marie Johnson, 77, of Pratt Street, passed away unexpectedly on Oct.17 at a Brunswick hospital. born in Machias on Sept. 23, 1929, she was a daughter of George and Frances Colson Mugnai. She grew up in the Machias and Bangor areas and was also at St. Michael’s Orphanage for four years. Johnson attended John Bapst High School in Bangor and spent the early part of her life in New Haven, Conn., with her grandparents. She was one the first waitresses at the original Helen’s Restaurant in Machias, which was started by her uncle, Larry Mugnai. She also worked at Longley’s Restaurant and at Congress Sportswear, both in Bath. Johnson dedicated her life to raising her family of ten children. Her hobbies included playing bingo and slot machines and she enjoyed spending time with her beloved dog Molly. She spent the last year of her life with her daughter, Cynthia, and son-in-law, Joseph McCarty, in Bonita Springs, Fla., and in Five Islands. Johnson is predeceased by her husband, Bernard L. Johnson, who passed away April 22, 1984; a son, Burleigh Preston Jr., who passed away in 1978; a grandson, Mark Anthony Preston, who passed away in 2003; and a son-in-law, Jerry Dye, who passed away in 2006. She is survived by a son, Michael Preston of Livermore Falls; eight daughters, Karen and her husband Richard Griffin of Durham, Marie and her husband Milo Foster of Blanchard, Mich., Susan Dye of Middleburg, Fla., Frances and Jim Hlavaty of Churubusco, Ind., Alice Quinn of Woolwich, Donna Lee Johnson of Courtland, Va., Cynthia and her husband Joe McCarty of Five Islands, and Betty Johnson and her husband Charles Lang of New Port Ritchey, Fla.; two sisters, Helen and her husband Joseph Brettagna of Orange, Conn., and Judy and her husband Don Sawyer of Orrington; a brother, John and his wife Pam Mugnai of Orrington; 29 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held recently at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brunswick. Interment took place in Great Cove cemetery in Roque Bluffs. Memorial donations may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, Maine 04011.

Brodi Wayne Messer

BRUNSWICK – Brodi Wayne Messer, 9 days old, died Oct. 18 at a Portland hospital. He is the son of Richard Dell Messer and Tara Naomi Dry of Brunswick. Besides his parents, Brodi is survived by his brother, David Wayne Gordon of Brunswick; his sister, Kayla Nichole Messer of Brunswick; paternal grandparents, Richard Messer and his wife Delores of Chelsea and Diana Messer and her boyfriend, Donald Prindell of Brunswick; maternal grandparents, Wayne Crooker and his wife Stella of Bowdoinham and Deborah Weatheread of Brunswick; paternal great-grandmother, Rhoda Lawton of White Plains, N.Y.; maternal great-grandmothers, Lucy Crooker of Weston and Glenda Frost of Brunswick; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service was held Oct. 23, at the Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick with the Rev. Ron McLaughlin officiating. The family suggests memorial donations in Brodi’s memory to the American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, Maine 04074.

Dorothy C. Johnson, 91

SOUTH PORTLAND – Dorothy Irene Cook Johnson was greatly loved as a friend, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Johnson, 91, of South Portland passed away Oct. 21 at Springbrook Nursing Care Center in Westbrook. Johnson was born Aug. 13, 1915 in her South Portland family home, the daughter of Frank M. and Lulu Ormsby Cook. She graduated from South Portland High School and was very proud of the letter sweater she received in basketball in 1933, the year she graduated. She married Ethan A. Johnson on June 10, 1942. For 31 years, Johnson was employed as the South Portland assessor’s assistant, retiring in 1977. She and her husband, Ethan, had many wonderful years together and were fortunate to have many years together after their retirement. They enjoyed traveling, yard sales and playing beano. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Ethan Allen Johnson. Survivors include her sons, Robert Johnson and his wife Patty of Buxton and Richard Johnson and his wife Susan of Rockland; her sister, Alice Leighton of Cape Elizabeth; seven grandchildren, Jamie, Jenilyn, Maggie, Ethan, Casey, Katie and Meg; three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Jakob and Anthony; along with many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were Oct. 23 at the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland. A funeral service was held the next day and Interment followed at Black Point cemetery in Scarborough. The family wishes to thank the health care providers at the Barron Center, Haven Health Care, Portland Center for Assisted Living, Beacon Hospice and especially at Springbrook Nursing Care Center Wayside Garden in Westbrook. All of these professionals that cared for Dorothy in her final months went beyond their job requirements, and the care extended to Dorothy was greatly appreciated by her family.

Frank W. Patten, 89

SOUTH PORTLAND – Frank W. Patten spent many happy years sailing on his boat with his wife, Mary Lou. They cruised to the Bahamas and Barbados and lived on the boat for three years in Florida. Patten, 89, of South Portland, passed away Oct. 19 at the South Portland Nursing Home. born on May 15, 1917 in Torrington, Conn., the son of Genevieve & Franklin Doane Patten, he was educated in Torrington schools. During World War II, Patten was a foreman for Pratt & Whitney in Hartford, Conn. Early in his life Patten developed a love of anything mechanical. He bought his first car when he was 14 and enjoyed tinkering with its every nut and bolt. He was innovative and tenacious in making anything mechanical run. Later in life he became interested in one of the first franchises, Dairy Queen, building 61 Dairy Queens in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. He served on the board of advertising for Dairy Queen for nine years and retired in 1983. An avid golfer, Patten was a 25-year member of the Portland Country Club. He was also a member of the Cumberland Club and the Portland Yacht Club. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1983 and were members of the Mayocoo Lake Golf Club, PGA. They later moved to Stuart, Fla., where they were members of the Stuart Yacht and Country Club for 18 years. The oldest son of ten children, Patten was predeceased by brothers Danny and George; sisters Dorothy, Anna, Gert and Rose; and by his first wife, Mary. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou of South Portland; his son Robert and wife Arline; daughters Susan Stango and Mary Angela Foster; sisters Ginger and Ruth; brothers Ed and Bill; and eight grandchildren. Services will be private. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the South Portland Nursing Home CNAs, RNs and to the Beacon Hospice of South Portland for their kindness and care. Martha Elizabeth Campbell, 95

SCARBOROUGH – Martha Elizabeth Campbell, 95, of Scarborough and Raymond died Oct. 16 at St. Joseph’s Manor in Portland after a short illness. She was born Jan. 17, 1911, on D Street in South Portland, the daughter of Arthur W. and Etta Laiten Blake and graduated from South Portland High School and Gorham Normal School. She taught in the East High Street School in South Portland before her 1935 marriage to the Rev. Warren C. Campbell in Malden Mass. They later lived in Dudley and Greenfield, Mass., Pine Point and Portland, Fall River, Dighton and Mansfield Mass., returning to Old Orchard and Scarborough after he retired. She resumed her teaching career in Berkley, Mass., then continued in Taunton and Seekonk schools. Campbell loved local New England history and worked on her family’s genealogy for more than 30 years, getting two lines back into the 1500s. She devoted herself to taking care of husband and children, reading out loud, reciting children’s poetry from memory, sharing family stories and knitting an afghan for each grandchild. She could make a beautiful arrangement out of a seemingly insignificant sprig of green and never wore black since that was for old women. She is predeceased by her husband; a son, Robert; and a granddaughter, Janice. Surviving are her son, John A. of Fredericksburg Va.; two daughters, Carol M. O’Brien of Marcellus, N.Y. and Scarborough and Jane E. MacIntyre of Mansfield, Mass. and Raymond; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 21 at People’s United Methodist Church in South Portland with visiting hours immediately following the service. Arrangements are by the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home.

Calvin Lee Peters, 15

SOUTH PORTLAND – Calvin “Cal” Lee Peters had a large group of friends in Portland and South Portland who he considered family. Cal, 15, of Wescott Road, passed away on Oct. 16. He was born in Portland, a son of Roger Scott Peters and Julie A. Seavey, and attended South Portland schools. Cal enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding, music and drawing. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Raymond Peters. He is survived by his mother, Julie A. Seavey of South Portland; his father, Roger Scott Peters of South Portland; his maternal grandparents, Deane and Barbara Seavey of Falmouth; his paternal grandmother, Bertha Peters of South Portland; and his little brother, Nick Adams of Portland. Cal is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A visiting hour and funeral service were held Oct. 20 at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland. Burial followed at Evergreen cemetery in Portland.

Clayton A. Sacks
1999-03-04

Clayton A. Sacks, 86, Nobleboro, died Feb. 26 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home, Damariscotta.

Born March 30, 1912, in Philadelphia, he was a son of Leidy J. and Irene Hartman Sacks. Graduating from Abington (Penn.) High School, he later attended both Drexel University and Ursinus College.

For many years, Mr. Sacks was associated with the Hunter Spring Co. in Lansdale, Penn., serving in various management capacities. He later became a real estate appraiser and industrial consultant and, after moving to Maine, served as president of the State of Maine Chapter of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers.

Mr. Sacks was a lifelong avid Amateur radio operator with the call letters of W1YB. His other interests included photography, traveling, and flower gardening. He was the past president of the Maine Iris Society.

Mr. Sacks was a member of the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle, and had served in several capacities, including treasurer, over the years.

His wife, Helen Kramer Sacks, predeceased him.

Surviving are two children, Patricia Fell of Damariscotta, and Stephen F. Sacks of Standish; a brother, Robert Sacks of Lansdale, Penn.; three grandchildren; and three great- granddaughters.

A celebration of his life was held March 2 at the Second Congregational Church; the Rev. Michael Stevens officiated. He will be laid to rest with his wife at Weeks Cemetery, Jefferson. Arrangements were by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Elwin H. Salls
1998-03-12

Elwin H. Salls, 83, of East Waterford died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Hardwick, VT, August 2, 1914, the son of Clarence and Jennie Tousaint Salls. He attended school in Hardwick and had been employed as a carpenter at Wilner Wood Products and in the maintenance department at Cornwall Industries. He loved playing his guitar and singing and was a member of Chet Howard and his Rodeo Wrangler Band in Vermont. He was a former member of the Masons in Vermont. Mr. Salls enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and pitching horseshoes.

He married Eleanor Wilson Moxcey on September 29, 1976.

Survivors include his wife of East Waterford; seven sons, Robert of Biddeford, Kenneth of Mechanic Falls, Richard of Largo, FL, Elwin Jr. of South Paris, Donald of South Paris, Gordon of Sanford and Michael of Otisfield; five daughters, Irene Macie of Mechanic Falls, Jennie Jacobson of South Paris, Chris Morrison of Shapleigh, Kathie Haley of Buckfield and Melissa Heath of West Paris; two step-daughters, Deborah Greenwood of West Virginia and Amber Otter of Old Orchard Beach; one sister, Margaret Germaine of Manchester, NH; 32 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Oxford Advent Christian Church. Interment will be in the spring in Elm Vale Cemetery, South Waterford. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Stoneham Rescue, Stoneham. Arrangements are under the care of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Robert Matti Salo
1999-04-08

SOUTH PARIS - Robert Matti Salo, 78, of South Paris, died at the Market Square Health Center on April 3, 1999.

He was born in Buckfield, June 13, 1920, the son of Hjalmar and Olga Javinen Salo Komulainen.

He received his education in the Buckfield and Hebron schools.

In 1941, he married the former Loretta G. Allen of Norway. In 1956, he married the former Ruth M. Brown of Hebron.

For most of his life he was a self-employed woodsman and logger. In his later years he worked for Cullinan's Inc., Community Concepts and the Norway- Paris Solid Waste Management.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the 347th Infantry Division, Company L in the European Theater of Operation. Amongst other medals, he also received three combat stars for the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of the Ardennes Salient (Ardennes Forest, Germany) and the Battle of Siegfried Line, Germany.

Mr. Salo was a member of the Hebron Community Baptist Church, the American Legion, Foster-Carroll Post 72 and the VFW Post 9787 of South Paris.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen R. and Diane Salo of South Paris; two daughters, Patricia M. Cummings of South Paris and Janice M. Hebert of Berlin, NH; a sister, Bertha A. Creighton of Lakeworth, FL and eight grandchildren, Wayne Cummings of Norway, Carol Ann Walker of South Paris, Joseph Cummings of Norway, Laura E. Strout of West Paris, Lynleigh and Chelsi Hebert of Berlin, NH, Robert and Andrew Salo of South Paris; six great grandchildren, Amanda and Allison Cummings of Norway, Christian and Hayley Jo Cummings and Michael and Nickolas Walker of South Paris; a niece, Elaine Reichenberg of Lakeworth, FL and a nephew, Randy Parks of Texas. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon E. Strout; a sister, Irene Johns and a brother, Edwin Salo.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Hebron Community Baptist Church with Rev. Anita White officiating; Interment in Maple Ridge Cemetery, Hebron.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Pine Tree Camp for Crippled Children, P.O. Box, Bath, Maine.

Richard B. Sanborn
1999-07-01

Richard Bigelow Sanborn, 80, of Sandhill Rd., Brunswick, died Wed., June 23, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Augusta, the son of Walter M. and Nita L. Sanborn, attended Cony High School and later graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy. He was a 1940 summa cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College where he was president of Alpha Delta Phi, ran varsity track, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He attended Harvard Law School, and was treasurer and an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

After Pearl Harbor Mr. Sanborn enlisted in the Navy and served for four years until the end of World War II.

Later he received a Bachelor of Law degree from Columbia Law School. He practiced law with his father and later established the firm of Sanborn, Morehead, Schade and Dawson. In 1949 he was elected as the then-youngest mayor ever of the city of Augusta, serving two terms.

He was a director and president of the Augusta City Hospital, president of the Kennebec Bar Association, and charter member and president of the Augusta Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a director of the Bank of Maine, the Kennebec Savings Bank and the Augusta Federal Savings Bank, where he also served as chairman.

Sanborn was a director of the Augusta Board of Trade, Boothbay Region YMCA, Indian Point Association, Barter's Island Association, New England Carriage Association, and Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association. He was a member of the Maine Bar Association, Republican State Committee, Litchfield Planning Board, and a trustee of the South Parish Congregational Church of Augusta.

A member of the Brunswick Rotary Club, Sanborn was also active in the Litchfield Lions Club, Kennebec Yacht Club, Abenaki Ski and Outing Club, Augusta Country Club, Kennebec Valley Bowdoin Club and Friends of Bowdoin. In 1965 the Franco-American Calumet Club honored him as Augusta's Outstanding Citizen.

After the death of his first wife, Helen, he moved to Brunswick and married Priscilla A. Keene, of Old Orchard Beach.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Stephen W. of Dresden and Jeffrey M. of Owings Mills, Md.; a daughter, Carol A. Sanborn of Livermore; a brother, John M. of Augusta; a sister, Margaret S. Hodgdon of Boothbay; several grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and stepchildren.

A memorial service was held June 28 at the Bowdoin College Chapel, Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating. Arrangements were by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.

Richard B. Sanborn
1999-07-01

Richard B. Sanborn, 80, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, June 23 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Augusta on August 16, 1918, he was the son of Walter M. and Nita L. Sanborn.

He attended Cony High School for two years and graduated two years later from Phillips Exeter Academy. At Bowdoin College he was president of his fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi, a varsity track man, and Marshall of his class. He graduated in 1940 Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude.

He then attended Harvard Law School where he was treasurer and an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

After Pearl Harbor he volunteered in the U.S. Navy and served four years until the end of World War II. He received his L.L.B. from Columbia Law School.

Returning from the war he practiced law with his father and later formed the firm of Sanborn, Moreshead, Schade and Dawson. In 1949 he was elected as the then youngest mayor in the history of the city of Augusta and served two terms.

Very active in the civic life of the community, he was a director and president of the Augusta General Hospital, president of the Kennebec Bar Association, and charter member and president of the Augusta Junior Chamber of Commerce.

For about 20 years each he was a director of the Bank of Maine, the Kennebec Savings Bank and the Augusta Federal Savings Bank, becoming chairman of the latter.

Mr. Sanborn served as director of the Augusta Board of Trade, the Boothbay Region YMCA, the Indian Point Association, the Barter's Island Association, the New England Carriage Association and the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners' Association. He was a member of the Maine Bar Association, the Republican State Committee, the Litchfield Planning Board and trustee of the South Parish Congregational Church of Augusta.

He held memberships in the Brunswick Rotary Club, the Litchfield Lions Club, the Kennebec Yacht Club, the Abenaki Ski and Outing Club, the Augusta Country Club, the Kennebec Valley Bowdoin Club and the Friends of Bowdoin.

In 1965 the Franco-American Calumet Club made its first award to him as the Outstanding Citizen of the City of Augusta.

He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, including extensive mountain climbing in his early years, skiing from his chalet at Sugarloaf, sailing and scuba diving at least once a year from various Caribbean islands.

After his retirement he operated a 200-acre farm in Litchfield from which he bred and raised Standardbred harness horses and competed in carriage driving contests in the New England states. At one time he had a collection of 65 antique carriages.

A couple of years following the death of his wife Helen, he moved to his college town of Brunswick and married Priscilla A. Keene of Old Orchard.

Survivors include his wife Priscilla A. Sanborn of Brunswick; his children, Stephen W. Sanborn of Dresden, Jeffrey M. Sanborn of Owings Mills, Maryland, and Carol A. Sanborn of Livermore; several grandchildren; a great-grandchild; step-children; his brother, John M. Sanborn of Augusta; and sister, Margaret S. Hodgdon of Boothbay.

A memorial service was held Monday, June 28 at the Bowdoin College Chapel with the Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements were by Stetson's Funeral Home, Brunswick.

Michael D. Santomasso
1998-07-16

PORT CHARLES, Florida On July 4, 1998 ,Michael D. Santomasso died after a long illness.

Mike was born in West Hartford, Connecticut, on October 24,1917, to Louis and Angela LaMorte Santomasso. He was educated in West Hartford schools, worked at the Royal Typewriter Company, and then worked at Jacob's Manufacturing Company until his retirement. While at Jacobs, he served as the UAW Union president.

A strong believer in public service, Mike served as Chairman of the Republican Party, Justice of the Peace, and a constable for West Hartford. Upon retirement, he moved to Port Charlotte where he was active with the American Red Cross, organized a Neighborhood Watch Program, and served on several local government committees.

While in the U.S. Army, Mike served under General Patton when he was stationed in Germany during World War II. He was an active member and past commander of the Hannon-Hatch VFW Post in West Hartford, Connecticut.

He is survived by his three daughters, Marie and her husband, George Hamilton of Yorktown, Virginia, Merlene Bishop of South Paris and Marion `Miki' Mero and her companion Robert Bouffard of Fort Edward, New York. Also, he leaves four grandsons and three granddaughters, Tina-Marie, John, and Michael Hamilton of Virginia; and Jennifer Brachett, Ron Bishop, Kevin Bishop, and Florence Ward, all of Maine. In addition, there are six great granddaughters and one great grandson.

Mr. Santomasso is also survived by his three brothers, James Santomasso and his wife Elizabeth and John Santomasso, both of Connecticut, and Anthony Santomasso and his wife LuLu Mae, of North Carolina; his three sisters, Mary Maltagliate, Mildred Gondek and her husband Al, and Teresa Santomasso, all of Connecticut. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A private burial will be held in Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to VFW Scholarship Fund or Poppy Drive, Hannon-Hatch VFW Post, 83 South Street, West Hartford, Connecticut, 06110.
