Russell L. Searles
1999-09-03

Russell L. Searles, 49, died Wednesday at a Portland Hospital.

Mr. Searles was born in Lewiston April 3, 1950, the son of Louis R. and Margaret Wing Searles, Sr., and was educated at New Gloucester and Gray-New Gloucester schools.

Mr. Searles was a truck driver for over twenty years before illness forced him to retire. He worked 13 years at Pioneer Plastic, Mitchell Trucking, Transcoastal Corporation and Searles Brothers Excavation. He was an avid Cribbage player, enjoyed crosswords, collecting vintage vehicles and fishing.

Surviving are his mother, Margaret V. Searles of New Gloucester; two daughters, Heather Searles, of Somerville, MA, and Melissa Searles, of Lewiston; and two brothers, Louis and Wayne Searles, both of New Gloucester. He was blessed with the companionship of Jacqueline Lemm, of Poland Spring. .

Memorial donations may be made to The American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, Maine 04330.

Irene M. Seavey
1998-06-18

Irene M. Seavey of Gardiner, died June 13 at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Greene, the daughter of Alton and Sadie Stevens Timberlake, and attended schools in Auburn and Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Seavey was married to Nelson B. Seavey for over 58 years until his death in 1992.

Mr. and Mrs. Seavey lived in Boothbay Harbor, Bath, Gardiner and Augusta. They also spent several winters in Sarasota, Florida where they enjoyed golf, bowling, bridge and visiting with their many friends.

She was a charter member of the former Meadow Hill Golf Club in Farmingdale and a past member of Western View Golf Club in Augusta. She was also a member of the Sarasota Golf Club where she once scored a hole-in-one. She belonged to the Winter Street Baptist Church for many years. Her favorite thing to do was to be with her family. She loved the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they loved being with her. She will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Seavey and his wife Theresa of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Barbara Seavey of Randolph; two grandsons, John Seavey of Cincinnati, Ohio and Robert Evans and his friend Tracy Kenyon of Clinton; four granddaughters, Kathryn and her husband Dennis of Chapel Hill, N.C., Janet and her husband Mark of Cincinnati, Ohio, Julie of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Laurie and her husband Bud of Gardiner; a sisterin-law, Glenys M. Seavey of Bath; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, four sisters and one brother.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 16. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Gardiner. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Winter Street, P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330. Envelopes provided at Amesbury White Funeral Home, Gardiner.

Aaron C. Sewall
1998-08-13

Aaron Christopher Sewall, 24, of Damariscotta, died Sunday, August 9 from injuries sustained in a single-car accident in Newcastle.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, he was a son of Fred M. and Joanne Palino Sewall, and attended Damariscotta schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1992.

For five and a half years, he worked as a skidder operator for Gordon Libby Woods Products, and since March had worked with his father in the family electrical business.

Mr. Sewall loved and worked with all types of automotive mechanics throughout his life.

He had a great love for his longtime companion, Stephanie Flint, and her two children, Samantha and Dylan.

Surviving are his parents of Damariscotta; maternal grandmother, Lucille Palino of Newcastle; paternal grandparents, Robert and Reita Sewall; and a brother, Joseph R., all of Damariscotta.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 13 at Strong Funeral Home, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 14 with the Rev. Rick Newall officiating.

Joseph Sewall Jr.
1999-07-22

Joseph (Tom) Sewall Jr., 69, of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, July 19 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

Born December 6, 1929 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Joseph T. and Gara Dunton Sewall.

He attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

After the service he had a career as a yacht captain in Florida until he returned to Boothbay Harbor to live. He worked in local shipyards until accepting a position in the maintenance department for the Maine Department of Marine Resources. He retired in 1990.

Survivors include two son, Kenneth Sewall of Schroon Lake, N.Y. and James Sewall of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Janice Sewall of Boothbay Harbor; wife of 35 years, Marilynn Berry Sewall of Boothbay Harbor; and five grandchildren.

Visiting hours were on Wednesday, July 21 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27 in Boothbay. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 22 at the funeral home. Rev. Dan McNutt and Al Roberts will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lloyd E. Shaw
1999-05-13

Lloyd E. Shaw, age 73, of Wiscasset, died Monday, May 10 at his residence.

Born in Bath on May 24, 1925, he was the son of Harold George and Ruth (Eaton) Shaw.

Mr. Shaw attended Woolwich schools and Wiscasset High School. He entered the United States Military, serving during World War II. During the war he was in four major campaigns in Europe.

On December 30, 1971, he married Claudia Seiders. He was self-employed in a snow removal business for several years in Alna and worked as a mechanic for Harry C. Crooker & Sons until retiring in 1987. Mr. Shaw turned his hobby of old car repairs into a business which he operated at his home in Wiscasset.

He was a member of the American Legion in Wiscasset and the Bath Lodge of Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia D. Shaw of Wiscasset; two daughters, Brenda Eaton of Woolwich and Heidi Marcotte of Poland; six sons, Larry Shaw of Woolwich, David Shaw of Key West, Florida, Tom Dodge of West Virginia, George Dodge of Florida, Tristam Dodge and Jacob Dodge of Woolwich; one brother, Ivan Shaw of Florida; 15 grandchildren; one nephew, Jack Shaw of Woolwich; and many cousins and friends.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, May 13 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, May 14 at the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Daniels officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Grover cemetery in Woolwich. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the American Legion Hall in Wiscasset after the burial.

Stanton A. Sherman
1999-06-24

Stanton A. Sherman, 87, of Wiscasset, died on Thursday, June 17 at his home.

Born in Edgecomb, he was the son of Harold S. and Florence E. (Matthews) Sherman and was a graduate of Wiscasset Academy, Maine Central Institute and Bates College.

Mr. Sherman was treasurer of the former Wiscasset Lumber Company, Inc., a family business, owned and operated by Mr. Sherman, together with his mother, father and two brothers until retiring in 1983.

On May 20, 1939 he married Alberta Potter. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

He was involved in sports all his life. He played baseball at Bates and for several semi-pro teams throughout the states. He coached Little League baseball for 14 years. The present Little League Park was named in his, and his brothers, honor. He also played basketball and in later years enjoyed golf and bowling.

Mr. Sherman was a member of the Wiscasset American Legion, a charter member of the former Wiscasset Athletic Club, a long-time member of the Wiscasset Fire Department, a former town selectman and a member of the Wiscasset Fire Society.

Surviving besides his wife of 60 years is a daughter, Sally A. Sherman of Bristol; two brothers, Gerald C. Sherman and Walter H. Sherman, both of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, June 22 at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset with the Rev. Peg Grzelkowski of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset officiating. The Wiscasset American Legion was present for Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Suzanne M. Shorette
1998-09-24

Suzanne M. Shorette, 53, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, September 9, at Mid Coast Hospital.

Born in Wiscasset on September 13, 1944, she was the daughter of Gilman and Marion McIntire Millett.

Mrs. Shorette attended Wiscasset schools and was a 1962 graduate of Wiscasset High School. For three years she worked for International Silver Company in Connecticut. On June 8, 1968 she married Lawrence ``Larry" J. Shorette Sr.

After her marriage Mrs. Shorette was a devoted homemaker to her family. Mr. and Mrs. Shorette lived in Edgecomb, Bowdoin and moved to Brunswick in February of this year. She was very involved in Christian fellowship and took great pleasure in helping other people. She took special joy in the close relationship she shared with her granddaughter.

She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing scrabble and was an excellent cook.

Surviving besides her husband of Brunswick is a son and daughter- in-law, Lawrence J., Jr. and Tracie Shorette of Brunswick; a daughter, Tammy Shorette and a son-in-law, James E. Hadley, both of Bowdoinham; three sisters, Marlene J. Rines of Edgecomb, Carol E. Yeaton of Gardiner and Stacie L. Stevens of Brunswick and a brother, Douglas Millett of Milford, N.H.; one granddaughter, Brandi, one grandson, Dakota, and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Stetson's Funeral Home, Federal Street, Brunswick. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14 at the funeral home with the Rev. Kevin Vachon officiating. Interment followed in Maquoit Cemetery, Brunswick.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street Brunswick, Maine 04011.

Sumner Shorey Jr.
1998-05-07

Sumner B. Shorey Jr., 75, of Wiscasset, died February 11, 1998. A graveside service with Full Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 9 at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset with Pastor Stephen Daniels officiating. After the service there will be a gathering of friends and family at Helen Shorey's house, 33 Gardiner Road in Wiscasset. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home.

Randal K. Simmons
1999-06-03

Randal Keenan Simmons, 52, Dothan, Ala., died May 1 at his residence.

He was born May 14, 1946 in Boston, Mass., the son of G.G. Simmons and Mary Hale Pittman Simmons.

Mr. Simmons was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Dothan and was a former faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Blountsville, Ala., for many years.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Mobile College and a master's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

An educator, Mr. Simmons taught for 27 years at Pennington High School in Blountsville, retiring in 1996, when he moved to Dothan to take care of his parents.

Survivors include his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Laney and Bruce Penn of Columbia, S.C.; a nephew, Matt Penn of Columbia; and an aunt and uncle, Claire and Phil Crocker of Pemaquid Beach. He was the grandson of the late Marguerite and Gorham Simmons of New Harbor.

Gurtha M. Simmons
1999-04-08

Gurtha Marie Simmons, 97, Boothbay Harbor, died March 31.

She was born in Tenants Harbor, a daughter of Thomas and Emeretta Mossman Barter, and attended Rockland schools.

In 1930, she moved to Boothbay Harbor. She and her husband, Harold W. Simmons, ran Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor, from 1930 to 1958, when their son "Sonny" took over the business.

Mrs. Simmons was a member of the Congregational Church, the Mount Pisgah Chapter OES, and the Garden Club.

She enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband at their camp in Eustis.

Surviving are a son, Harold G. Simmons of Boothbay Harbor; three grandchildren, Harold W. Simmons, II of Southport, Sunni G. Page of Boothbay Harbor, and Susan Lewis of Boothbay; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held April 3 at Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay. Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Paul B. Simpson
1999-07-08

Paul B. Simpson, 77, died Sunday, July 4 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. born March 16, 1922 in Wiscasset, he was the son of Hallie and Martha Grover Simpson. Mr. Simpson attended schools in Wiscasset and Bath.

In 1940 he joined the Army National Guard, which in 1941 became federalized and was known as the United States Army. He was in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany and was wounded although not seriously and was able to make it through Germany.

At the end of World War II he returned to Wiscasset to work with Central Maine Power Company at the Mason Station Power Plant. He became a general contractor and then worked for Bath Iron Works for three years. He was injured while at work at BIW and retired.

Mr. Simpson enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Lincoln Lodge #3 in Wiscasset.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Elsie Dixon Simpson of Wiscasset; step-son, Richard Quaintane of Auburn; one brother, Philip Simpson of Wiscasset; one sister, Priscilla Dickson of Wiscasset; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
