Prescott F. Hill
1998-04-02

Prescott F. Hill of Lenox, Massachusetts and Signal Point Village, Boothbay Harbor died February 28 after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Boston on December 9, 1934, he was the son of Martha Carter Hill of Lenox and the late Warren Giddings Hill, He grew up in Padanaram, South Dartmouth, Mass., graduated from Friends Academy in New Bedford and Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire.

Mr. Hill received his A.B. in Economics from Harvard College in 1956 and took post-graduate courses in business management at Boston University. Following graduation from Harvard, he joined New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston as a methods analyst. Several promotions followed and he was named Investment Officer in 1967. He joined Berkshire Life in Pittsfield, Mass. in 1969 as Vice PresidentMortgage Loan and Real Estate and worked in that capacity at the time of his death.

For many years he was a corporator of Berkshire Medical Center and its real estate committee, a member of the Lenox Republican Town Committee, and a former member of the Lenox Town Finance Committee.

For the past 45 years he spent much of the summer in Boothbay Harbor, where he had enjoyed power boating, sailing, and OneDesign racing. His love of the area started while he was a groundskeeper at Spruce Point Inn in the 1950's.

Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, the former Lois Evelyn Boon, whom he married in Rochester, New York in 1962; two sons, David Warren Hill of Groton, Mass. and Prescott Carter Hill of Lexington, Kentucky; two daughters-in-law, Krista Ingram and Karen L. Hill; and two brothers, Warren Carter Hill of North Andover, Mass. and Robert Miner Hill of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church of Lenox with burial in Lenox. Donations in Prescott Hill's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Betty Lou Sitton

Betty Lou Sitton, 63, died Thursday, March 26 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born January 25, 1935 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of George and Edna McPhee L'Hostis. She grew up and attended Boothbay Harbor schools. She graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1953.

Mrs. Sitton worked on Capitol Island and at the West Harbor Post Offices. She was also a bartender at Lawnmeer and the Thistle Inn.

She began her banking career at Canal Bank which later merged into Merrill and later to Fleet Bank. She worked at Key Bank until her retirement.

Mrs. Sitton was a member of the Miss Fires, Alumni Marching Band, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved birds, plants and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Amber and her husband Robert Page of Brunswick, Nancy Long of Dover, N.H., and Ann and her husband Gary Leeman of Hancock; a son, Neil and his wife Tracy Grover of Boothbay; a sister, Nathalie Purington of Boothbay Harbor; a niece, Linda and her husband James Daniels of Portland; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Monday, March 30 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home in Boothbay Harbor. Franklyn Lenthall officiated. Burial was in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society or to the Alzheimer's Association, 162 Lancaster Street, Portland 04101. Arrangements were by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Irving B. Skaff
1998-12-03

NORWAY - Irving B. Skaff, 42, of Harrison died Friday November 20, 1998, in Norway as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

He was born in Miami, FL, on August 29, 1956, the son of Sidney H. and Vesta Gile Skaff. He was educated at Cocoa Beach High School. He finished his career as a chef at the Olde Mill Tavern in Harrison.

He is survived by a son, Jacob Sidney Skaff, of Harrison; two brothers, William and Thomas, both of Cape Coral, FL; his mother of Cape Coral, FL and an uncle, Jerry Skaff of Lowell, MA. He was predeceased by his father Sidney.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, November 25, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Donations in Mr. Skaff's memory may be sent to establish a college trust fund for his son, Jacob, to Thomas Skaff, 1310 South East 7th St., Cape Coral, FL 33900.

Alice E. Skinner
1999-06-23

Alice E. Skinner, 89, of 31 Scotland Bridge Road, York, Me., died Friday, June 18, 1999, at York Hospital.

She was born in Boston, the daughter of Herbert and Georgietta (Twomey) Colwell. She was a graduate of Jamaica Plains High School and attended Possenissen College in Boston.

She had resided in West Roxbury for many years and had been employed at the Rustcraft Greeting Card Co. in Dedham Mass.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and a former member of the West Roxbury Congregational Mothers Club. She was a member of the York Hospital Auxiliary and was a York Hospital volunteer until February, 1999. Mrs. Skinner enjoyed square dancing and had participated in square dances throughout New England.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Skinner, who died in 1987.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra E. LaBonte of York; two sons, Charles E. "Duke" Skinner, Jr. of Naples, Fla., and Richard E. Skinner of Plymouth, Mass.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm, Saturday, June 26, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York.

Memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Volunteer Transportation or York Hospital Home Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Marie Bragdon Small
1999-02-19

Marie Bragdon Small died Sunday, February 7, 1999 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, ME.

She was born in Gray, January 27, 1917, the daughter of Gebert and Rosetta Verrill Bragdon.

Mrs. Small attended Gray schools. She also lived in Connecticut for several years, later moving to Poland. She worked at the shoe shop in Lewiston, and also made fish nets at home. She enjoyed country music, dancing, knitting, crocheting and fishing.

Surviving are a sister, Adeline May, of New Gloucester; a sister-in-law, Ivy Bartlett, of Rumford; six sons, John Grant, of Peru, Ernest Small, of New Gloucester, Harold and Kenneth Small, of Gray, William Small, of Naples, and Donald Small, of Falmouth; six daughters, Theresa Pickens, of Gray, Nina Ellis, of Falmouth, Ernestine Roberts, of New Gloucester, Carolann Turner, of Litchfield, Ivy Brown, of New York, Debby Thereault of Scarborough, and one step-daughter, Gloria Robinson, of Connecticut. She is also survived by 40 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Everett P. Small, and three children, Margarit Everett, Jr., Robert Small, a stepdaughter, Maderlin Penley, and a brother Benjamin Bragdon.

At her request, there will be no funeral. There will be a graveside service in the Spring at Gray Village Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home in Gray.

Walter A. Smith
1999-04-22

Walter A. Smith, 81, Nobleboro, died April 15 at his home.

Born on Nov. 23, 1917 in Hanson, Mass., he was the only son of Benjamin and Jennie Watt Smith.

Mr. Smith was a retired carpenter, whose favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, and gardening. He taught many of the children in the family the simple joys of nature, and will be lovingly remembered for his good cheer and sense of humor.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Olive Smith of Nobleboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Clete Baltes of Nobleboro; two sisters, Dorothy Solari of East Bridgewater, Mass., and Thelma Wales of Bradenton, Fla.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Knowlton of Marietta, Ga.; and two step- grandsons, Aaron and Jason Baltes.

A gathering of family and friends has been held and a private burial service will take place in August. Arrangements are under the direction of Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Nobleboro First Responders.

D. Spencer Smith
1998-09-10

D. Spencer Smith, 86, of Boothbay Harbor, formerly of New Jersey, died Saturday, September 5 at his home.

Born June 17, 1912 in New York City, he was the son of D. Spencer and Anna Anderson Smith.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Ellen Freeman Smith of Boothbay Harbor.

There are no services. Donations may be made to Miles Home Health Hospice, RR 2, Box 4500, Damariscotta, ME 04543 or Boothbay Region District Nurses Association, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were by Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Madeline B. Smith
1998-09-17

Madeline Brown Smith, 83, a lifelong resident of Wiscasset, died Tuesday, September 15 at Coves Edge in Damariscotta.

She was born on January 26, 1915 in Bath.

A private graveside service will be held. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Hildred Smith
1998-10-01

Hildred ``Auntie" Smith, 76, of Wiscasset, died Monday, September 21 at Field Crest Nursing Home in Waldoboro.

Born October 16, 1921 in Shulles Mills, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Walter and Carrie (Farthing) Smith. She attended Shulles Mills schools and moved to Bath in 1933. She worked as a domestic worker for several homes in Bath.

Miss Smith was a member of the Wiscasset Extension and attended Corliss Street Baptist Church in Bath. She was a mother to everyone, an active reader and enjoyed working with her hands.

Survivors include three sisters, Merrye Leavitt and her husband Don of Wiscasset, Lynne Belanger and her husband Leo of Wiscasset, Edna Wright of Bath; and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Smith was predeceased by her mother, Carrie Wright; her stepfather, Holden Wright; and her brother, Homer Farthing, all in 1965; and one sister, Dora Williams in 1992.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 1 at Oak Grove cemetery in Bath with Rev. Harold and Betina Tucker officiating. Entrance to the cemetery is off Oak Grove Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Leon E. Smith
1999-07-08

Leon E. Smith, 62, of Wiscasset died of cancer Wednesday, June 30 at his residence.

Born in Alna on July 29, 1936, he was the son of William and Minnie (Bernier) Smith.

Mr. Smith attended Alna schools and Erskine Academy. On May 25, 1958 he married Beverly Moore. He entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in November of 1960. For several years he worked as a truck driver on construction. For 11 years he operated the Edgecomb Texaco. He was a subcontract carrier. In April of 1994 he started working for the Town of Wiscasset Department until 1999.

He was a member of the VFW in Boothbay.

Mr. Smith enjoyed working, camping with his wife and was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly M. Smith of Wiscasset; one son, Donald Smith Sr. of Wiscasset; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Louise) Baird of Alna and Mrs. Herbert (Alice) Murphy of Wiscasset; and two grandchildren of Woolwich.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Joe Smith and Harry Smith.

Visiting hours were Friday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset. All other services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Ambulance, P.O. Box 328, Wiscasset, ME 04578. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Norman W. Smith
1998-03-26

NORWAY Norman W. Smith, 78, of Rustfield Village, Norway, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. He was born in Oxford on August 4, 1919, the son of the late Egbert and Ellen (Green) Smith. Norman was pre-deceased by his mother at an early age and was raised by his stepmother, Delia. He attended Oxford High School and Nashua Vocational Tech School.

Mr. Smith was a former owner of the Jenny Service station on Main Street in Norway for many years. He also was employed several years as a supervisor at Sanders Co. in Nashua, NH. He was a member of the V. F.W. in South Paris and the Oxford Historical Society. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 43rd Division, 103rd Infantry. He participated in the battle of Guadelcanal, Northern Solomons, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded a bronze star, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, and Philippines Liberation Ribbon.

He married Rose M. Dubois in Hattisburg, MS on March 9, 1942. He is survived by his wife of Norway: one brother, Gordon Smith of Norway; one sister, Gloria Herrick of Norway and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Iva Martinson and Vera Robbins.

There was a private funeral on Wednesday, March 25; public graveside services will be held in the spring at Norway Pine Grove cemetery at a time and date that will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Smith's memory may be sent to The Pine Tree Society, P.O. Box 307, Bath, ME 04530. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.
