William G. Smith
1998-04-02

William G. Smith, Jr., 70, of Gary Street, South Paris died unexpectedly Saturday evening, March 28, 1997, at his home.

He was born in Jersey City, NJ, January 10, 1928, the son of William and Elizabeth Wilson Smith, Sr.

He attended school in Portland and had been employed as an arborist for Lucas Tree Company. He enjoyed cooking, computers, plants and trees, but the most enjoyment in his life were his grandchildren. He faithfully served his country during World War II in the Marine Corps.He married Beverly Murphy on September 23,1950.

Survivors include his wife of South Paris; three daughters, Doreen (Dodie) Hoyt and Darlene Sessions both of Norway and Shari O'Connor of South Paris; one son, Gregory (Billy) Smith of Oxford; two brothers Robert of Summersworth, NH and Daniel of Bolster Mills; two sisters, Phyllis of Portland and Joan of Portland; four grandchildren Greg and Garret Sessions and Cody and Brynn O'Connor.

Funeral services were held at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway on Tuesday. Interment will later in the spring at Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the Maine Audubon Society, Falmouth, ME.

Nathan P. Smith
1998-07-30

SOUTH PARIS Nathan P. Smith, 77, of Waterford Acres, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at the VA home in South Paris.

He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the son of Russell and Ruby Pomeroy Smith. He grew up and was educated in Monterey, MA and Spring, MA.

Mr. Smith was a World War II Army veteran.

In 1951, he married Eleanor McKeen and lived in East Stoneham until three years ago, when they moved to Waterford.

He worked as a carpenter his whole life and was also a caretaker. He was a member of the Smart Post American Legion.

Besides his wife of Waterford, he is survived by one son Kenneth Smith of Bethel; his twin brother Bruce Smith of Albany; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held July 31 at the United Church of Christ, East Stoneham with the Rev. Janice Wilcox officiating.

Donations may be made in Mr. Smith's memory to the East Stoneham Rescue.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Robert D. Smith Jr.
1999-05-20

BRANFORD, CT - Robert D. Smith Jr. of Stratford, CT, died Tuesday, May 11, at Connecticut Hospice, where he had been a patient for two weeks, following a battle with cancer.

He was born on March 26, 1946, in Norway, the son of Robert D. Sr. and Pauline Young Smith.

He graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 1964. Upon graduation he served four years in the U.S. Air force, then settled in the Connecticut area where he was employed up until his illness.

He will be remembered by his family and friends for his wit and charm.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey A. and his wife, Hatsue of Hanscom AFB, MA; his daughter, Julie A. Santos and her husband, Tim of Milford, CT; three grandchildren, Kaito Smith and Sky and Asia Santos; a former wife, Mrs. Steve (Cookie) Vedeskas of Milford, CT; his mother of Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Waldon (Eleanor) Noose of Springfield, MO and Mrs. Huster (Susan) Downing of Minot; several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father and a sister, Mary Hennessey.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to Connecticut Hospice, Burban Drive, Branford, CT 06405.

Pearl Anne Smith
1998-10-15

WEST PARIS Pearl Anne Smith, 72, of Oxford died Friday, October 9, 1998, at the Ledgeview Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She was born in Mexico, ME on March 15, 1926 the daughter of Jessie and Lucy Durrell Bixby. She was a graduate of Oxford High School and attended Bliss College.

She married Nelson G. Smith on February 9, 1946. They lived together in Oxford their entire married lives. Mr. Smith died on August 2, 1997. Mrs. Smith had worked for Robinson Manufacturing, done a lot of child care over the years and also worked at Oxford Hills Bowling Lanes for many years. She was a well known bowling enthusiast and state champion who spent her time coaching and teaching many people who became state and even world champions themselves in candlepin bowling.

She was past president of the Oxford Firemen Auxiliary and Oxford Community Club, a cub scout den mother, and a coordinator for many fund raisers that benefited under privileged children.

She is survived by three sons, Neil of Chelsea, MA, Arnold of Otisfield, and Brian of Charlestown, NH; three daughters, Patricia Smith of Oxford, Rose Strout of Portland, and Tina Smith of Oxford; two brothers, Charles Bixby of Poland and Alton Bixby of Newfane, NY; one sister, Dorothy Allen of Oxford; 17 grandchildren, several step grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Levi, Roy, and Richard; one sister, Ida, and a daughter, Wendy.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway, with Rev. Melvin Young officiating. Interment followed at the Riverside cemetery in Oxford. Donations in Mrs. Smith's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Foundation 70 E. Lake St. Chicago, IL 60601.

John W. Smith
1998-10-29

NORWAY John W. Smith Sr., 64, of Oxford died Friday October 23, 1998 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born IN Oxford on December 1, 1933, the son of Harry and Rena Blair Smith. He was educated in Oxford schools. He had worked for the town of Oxford as a police officer, sanitation officer, and as its animal enforcement officer.

He had served in the United States Army.

He married Barbara E. Bressette on August 9, 1953 and she died November 20, 1996.

He is survived by four sons, David J. , Ricky L., Frank W., and John W. Jr. all of Poland; one brother, Robert Smith of South Paris; four grandchildren and he was predeceased by a brother, Harry Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 1, at the Craigie cemetery in Oxford. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Delbert J. Smith
1998-11-05

NORWAY Delbert J. Smith, 83, of Norway died Saturday, October 31, 1998, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was born in Livermore Falls on December 29, 1914, the son of Adelbert and Laura Norton Smith. He attended school in Livermore Falls.

He married Seamona Seaman in 1938 and she predeceased him in 1963.

Mr. Smith worked for many years at Robinson Manufacturing and Bill Keen Construction as a truck driver. There are three generations of truck drivers in his family. Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and brook fisherman in his younger days. His current hobby was traveling locally on his electric three-wheeler.

He is survived by a son, Gale of Oxford; two daughters, Cheryl Smith Farrington of Canaan and Brenda Smith of Lewiston; five sisters, Gwynneth Polley of Manchester, ME, Geneva Anderson of Manchester, ME, Beverly Charette of Guilford, Lillian Safford of Arowsic, ME, and Dolores Thomas of Otisfield; a brother Laurice Smith of New Gloucester; 12 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Percy `Sonny' Smith of Buffalo, NY and a daughter Beryl Tripp of Lewiston and a sister, Venice and three brothers, Vern, Clinton and Glenn.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Merrill Memorial cemetery in Otisfield with Rev. Norman Jackson officiating. Donations in Mr. Smith's memory can be made to the Oxford-Otisfield Rescue Association c/o Lucille Hodsdon RFD #1 Box 201 8 Norway, ME 04268.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home in Norway was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin L. Smith, Jr.
1999-05-06

NORWAY - Calvin L. Smith, Jr., 70, of Otisfield died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Norway, April 4, 1929, the son of Calvin L. Smith, Sr., and Mabel Estelle Curtis.

He was educated in Otisfield and Bridgton Academy.

He married Wilda Brown. He drove trucks for Scribners Mill, was a foreman at Wilner Wood Products and had operated Smith Rubbish Removal until he retired in 1994.

He married Marilyn Masterman in 1967. She died in 1991.

He was an avid stock car fan, building and racing cars at Oxford Plains Speedway.

In 1994 he married Dorothy Vaughan.

Survivors include his wife of Otisfield; his mother of Otisfield; a sister, Hazel Ward, and her husband Neil, of Otisfield; a brother, Donald, and his wife, Bertha, of Otisfield; four sons, Edward and his wife Carol Ann of North Waterford, David of South Paris, Frank of Minot and Clifford and his wife Tammie of South Paris; three daughters, Charlotte Blier and Becky Smith of Auburn and Carol Hadley and her husband, Brent, of Buckfield; seven stepchildren, James Masterman of Otisfield, Peter Masterman and his wife, Terry, of South Paris, Valerie McGuire and her husband, John, of Turner, William Vaughan of Belfast, Michael Vaughan of Georgia, Linda Buchanan and her husband, Greg, of Lincoln, and Sally Wing and her husband, Rick, of Bridgton; 22 grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father; a stepson, John Masterman in 1973 and a brother, Wesley Smith in 1989.

Graveside services were held on Monday May 3 at the Oakdale cemetery in Otisfield.

Those who wish may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, Box 456, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mrs. Mary F. Smith
1999-07-15

SOUTH PARIS - Mary F. Smith, 79, of South Paris died early Saturday, July 10, 1999, at the Market Square Health Center.

She was born in Bethel on December 1, 1919, the daughter of Ormando and Florence Nutting Farwell.

She attended school in Woodstock and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1938.

She had been employed at the B. E. Cole Shoe Shop in Norway. She had made her home in Lovell for many years before moving to South Paris in 1966.

She is survived by a son and his wife, James and Evelyn Smith, of South Paris; one sister, Deborah Eldredge, of Unity; four grandchildren, Richard Smith of South Paris, Pamela Smith of Waterford, Tracy Paradis and Amanda Smith both of South Paris and three great grandsons.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Roy, and three brothers.

Family graveside services were held Tuesday at Number Four Cemetery, Lovell.

Arrangements were by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to Hosanna Christian School and Church, Schoolhouse Road, Oxford, ME.

Rose T. Smith
1999-08-12

Palestine, TX - Rose T. Smith, 83, of South Paris died Monday, August 2, 1999, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Livermore, on December 2, 1915, a daughter of Carroll and Caroline E. Temper Timberlake.

She was educated in Livermore schools. She worked at Wilner Wood products for over 30 years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and quilting. She was a great cook. Her grandchildren have fond memories of waking up in the morning to the smell of her homemade donuts.

She married Lawrence Smith on June 28, 1956; he died December 8, 1993.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Stanley of West Paris, Jan Britton and her husband Frank of Palestine, TX, and Rosalie Brown and her companion Steve Wetmore of Farmington; one stepson, Gerald Smith and his wife Marion of Massachusetts; 24 grandchildren; 41 greatgrandchildren and 23 great-greatgrandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Irving, Harold and Merton; five sisters, Florence Durgin, Della and Elsie Timberlake, Bertha Carmody and Bernice Gammon; two stepsons, Lawrence Smith, Jr. and Dean Smith, a grandson, David Britton and her first husband Everett Brown.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 7, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Interment was in Pleasant Valley cemetery in West Paris.

Serving as bearers were Frank T. Britton, Daniel Britton, Stephen Wetmore, Frank E. Britton, Chris Waterman and Duane Waterman.
