Albert C. Smith Sr.
1999-08-19

OXFORD - Albert C. Smith, Sr., 69, of Oxford died Wednesday, August 11, 1999.

He was born in Oxford on July 8, 1930, a son of Wendall and Mildred Thurlow Smith.

He was educated in Oxford Schools. He worked for Auerbach Shoe and Robinson Manufacturing.

He owned his own store and catering business, Al's Variety in Oxford.

He was a member of the Lake Thompson Senior Citizens.

He liked Field Days, parades and variety shows. He operated a hot-dog stand at Oxford Old Home Days. He was a man full of laughter and was always mischievous.

He married Jalna Francis Merrill on December 14, 1968.

He is survived by his wife of Oxford; two sons, Donald and Albert C., Jr, both of Oxford; three daughters, Patti Truman of Bethel, Carol Lessard of South Paris and Paula Adams of Oxford; a niece, Lillian Purington of Mechanic Falls, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Monday, August 16, 1999 at the Riverside cemetery in Oxford. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Bruce E. Smith
1999-08-19

SOUTH PARIS - Bruce E. Smith, 78 of Albany Township died Saturday August 14, 1999, at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris with his loving family at his side.

He was born at Great Barrington, MA on July 7, 1921, the son of Russell A. and Ruby Pomeroy Smith. He was educated in Monterey and Springfield, MA, schools.

He had worked as a mason and carpenter. He took great pride in being a dowser of water. He was an avid fisherman,hunter, liked snowmobiling, dancing and camping.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion in Locke Mills. He was a veteran of WWII in the United States Army.

He married the former Alta Morrill on November 4, 1950.

He is survived by his wife of Albany; two daughters, Elaine Johnson and her husband Harlan and Lisa Allen and her husband Dale all of Norway; two sons, Bruce E., Jr.and his wife Brenda of Winterport, ME and Russell A. and his wife Linda of Oxford; ten grandchildren, Bernard Martin of Lewiston, Danielle R. and Dylan Allen of Norway, Linda Legere and Lissa Kaszynski of North Berwick, Jill Levine of Beverly, MA, Harlan Johnson of Otisfield, Jessica E. Smith of Freeport, Long Island, NY., Laura K. Smith of Portland, Denise Bushey of Ossipee, NH; nine great grandchildren and many friends.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Nathan and Arnold.

Funeral Services were held at on Tuesday, August 17 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Interment was in the Hillside cemetery in Stoneham. Donations in Mr. Smith's memory may be sent to the Alzheimers Assoc. of ME 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.

Howard D. Smith
1999-08-19

SOUTH PARIS - Howard D. Smith, 88, formerly of Norway, died Friday, August 6, 1999 at the Market Square Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Norway on April 12, 1911, the son of Lee and Hattie Scribner Smith.

He was a graduate of Norway High School in 1931.

He married Alberta Gouin who died on May 31, 1970. He remarried Georgia Charles who died in 1994.

Mr. Smith owned a custodial service with his son for many years. Some of his customers were C.B. Cummings, Klain's Insurance, and Norway National Bank. He was also a member of the Norway Weary Club.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Howard M. of Norway; a sister, Eleanor Andrew McGill of Norway and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Mark and two sisters, Ruth and Marion.

There was a graveside service on Wednesday, August 11 in the Norway Pine Grove cemetery with Shirley Miller officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home.

Stephen Smyc
1998-04-02

Stephen Smyc, retired Chief of Police of Auburn, died on February 15, 1998, at the West Palm Beach Medical Clinic near where he and his wife's winter home is located.

Born in Lewiston on October 29, 1919, he was the son of John and Josie Gromack Smyc. He attended Edward Little High School and also the F.B.I. Police Academy.

During World War II he served in the United States Army Infantry as a Staff Sergeant and a Platoon Leader in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge in 1945, he joined the Auburn police force, advancing from patrolman to the Chief of Police.

In 1947 he married Lisle Avis Greenleaf. After his retirement as Chief of Police of Auburn, they moved from their home in the Lewiston-Auburn area to a home on Saturday Pond in Otisfield. They have spent their winters in Florida.

Stephen Smyc was a life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was a member of the Order of Masons, and also the Accepted Scottish Rites. Mr. Smyc was a member of the American Legion Post 112 in Oxford, where he was a past commander.

Mr. Smyc was a member of the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church. He served as chairman of the Scholarship Awards Committee of the church. He was also chairman of the Building Committee, a Trustee, and a Deacon of the church. He was an interested and valued member of not only the church, but of all the organizations in which he was a member.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Smyc is survived by his wife of 51 years, Avis Greenleaf Smyc and one sister, Celia Smyc McMannus. There are several surviving nephews and nieces.

A memorial service to honor the life of Stephen Smyc will be held Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church in Otisfield with the Rev. Gertrude DeCoteau officiating.

Internment will be in the Gracelawn Memorial Gardens in Auburn.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Stephen Smyc to The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 680, Oxford, ME, 04270.

Ruth A. Snowman
1998-10-29

Ruth Ann Snowman, 49, of Southport, passed away on Sunday, October 25 at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Boothbay Harbor on May 23, 1949 the daughter of Mildred and Norman Lewis. She was the youngest of six children.

Mrs. Snowman graduated from Boothbay Region High School in 1967 and Bernard School of Beauty in Lewiston in 1969. Before her marriage in 1969 she worked for Gregory's in Brunswick. Ruthie and her husband Gary lived in California for a couple of years before returning to their childhood neighborhood of Southport Island where they made their home and raised their two sons, Lee and Will.

In 1986 she went to work on the Southport bridge as a bridge tender. She was the first ``lady bridge tender" that the Southport draw bridge had ever hired. These were familiar surroundings for her as she spent her childhood riding the bridge and helping tend gates with her dad, the bridge tender for 43 years. She considered this not only a job but a way of sharing all of her love and friendship with the boaters and passers-by.

Mrs. Snowman spent her life loving and caring for her family.

Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Gary W. Snowman; two sons, Leland W. and William S. Snowman, all of Southport; her parents, Norman and Mildred Lewis of Southport; five brothers, Donald Lewis of Wiscasset, Roy Lewis of Trevett, Stanley Lewis of Bath, Dwight Lewis of Boothbay, and Duane Lewis of Southport; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 29 at the Southport United Methodist Church on Southport Island.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011 in Ruthie's memory.

Arrangements are by Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home of Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Robert P. Snowman
1999-07-22

NORWAY - Robert P. Snowman died on July 12, at age 72, at his home in Norway. A newspaperman, he retired in 1991 from the Portland Press Herald, where readers looked forward to his features on cooing and skiing, as well as his distinctive touch with news headlines. Earlier journalistic stints were with the Bangor Commercial, the New London (CT) Day, the World Telegram in New York City, and a weekly paper in Chatham, NY.

Mr. Snowman, known all his life as Bob, was born in Caribou and graduated from Caribou High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Army at once and spent most of his military service during World War II in Hawaii.

Returning to Maine, he earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in Orono, graduating in 1950. His marriage to Elizabeth A. Matero ended in divorce.

Mr. Snowman was a lifelong skier and was a ski instructor at Mt. Snow and Mt. Abrams. His other diversions included writing, drawing, working on his antique car, rock climbing, gardening, and cooking. In retirement he became a skilled woodworker.

He is survived by four sisters, Barbara White of Cape Elizabeth, Dorothy Snowman of Bethlehem, CT, Janet Duncan of Presque Isle and Mary Snowman of Castle Douglas, Scotland; one brother, David Snowman of St. Augustine, FL and by five nieces and eight grandnieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later dale. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Norway Memorial Library, 151 Main Street, Norway, ME 04268.

Jacqueline Snyder
1998-04-23

Jacqueline ``Jackie" Helen Snyder, 37, formerly of Utica, New York passed away Saturday, April 18 in Orrington, Maine where she has resided and made her home since attending the University of Maine in Orono.

She was a candidate for a B.S. degree in Forest Ecosystem Science at the University of Maine. She was also a graduate of Morrisville College in Morrisville, New York. For the past year she had been associated with the Digital Mapping Associates located in Bangor. She was an avid runner and dog trainer having received numerous awards.

Survivors include her parents, Joseph and Jean Conte of Boothbay; one brother, Michael Filler of North Brookville, New York; close friend, Steve Miranda and many other valued friends. She also leaves her little dog, Bilbo, whom she loved very much.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 24 at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. The Rev. Dr. Mary Jo Zimmerli will officiate. Donations may be made in Jackie's memory to the animal shelter of one's choice. Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Lois H. Snyder
1999-06-24

Lois H. Snyder, 81, of The Highlands in Topsham died Sunday May 30, 1999, at the Freeport Nursing Home after complications from lung cancer.

Mrs. Snyder and her husband lived at Severance Lodge Club in Centre Lovell from 1967 to 1985 and in Norway from 1985 until 1993 before moving to Topsham.

She was also a member of the Lovell United Church of Christ.

She was born in Utica, New York on April 4, 1918, the daughter of Edward Henry and Florence Hitzelberger.

She was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and the Utica School of Commerce. Before her marriage she was Secretary to the President of Hamilton College in Hamilton, New York.

On January 1, 1943, she married Robert Clarence Snyder at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. They were the first couple to be married at the Marine Base chapel and had celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this year.

She is fondly remembered for her quick wit, sense of style and a flair for interior decorating. Throughout her life she was an avid bridge player and an amateur thespian performing in numerous community theatre presentations.

Mrs. Snyder gave the gift of organ donation.

She is survived by her husband of Topsham; a daughter, Jill Beal of Brunswick; a son, Robert Gregg Snyder of Farmington, Minnesota formerly of Norway; a sister, Joyce Driscoll, of Vienna, Virginia. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Sarah Sabasteanski of Portland, Maine; Emily Sabasteanski of Santa Clarita, California; Steven Snyder of Seattle, Washington, Scott Snyder of Spokane, Washington and Shelby and Stacey Snyder both of Arnold, California as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Lovell United Church of Christ at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Brunswick, Maine.

Janet C. Spear
1999-01-21

Janet C. "Judy" Spear, 56, Boothbay Harbor, died Jan. 11 after a two-year illness with cancer.

She was a daughter of Frank and Kathleen Sargent.

Ms. Spear is remembered by her family for her kindness and generosity to others. She loved to find a good deal at local yard sales and frequented local thrift shops, always looking for treasures to share with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite collections included her "Strawberry Theme," Elvis memorabilia and pictures of her grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Ralph of York Beach, and Rusty and William Spear of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Teresa) Higgins of Cumberland; two sisters, Nancy Sargent of Boothbay Harbor and Shelia Salonick of Nantucket, Mass., and six grandchildren.

At her request there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
