Edwin P. Spear
1999-02-25

Edwin P. Spear, 82, of East Boothbay, formerly of Dedham, Mass., died Friday, February 19 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born June 5, 1916 in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Albert A. and Emma J. Peterson Spear. He grew up and attended schools in Boston.

Mr. Spear worked for Four River Shipyard in Boston on defense work. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He served on the U.S. Monterey, an aircraft carrier that participated in many battles in the South Pacific. He was the second generation of four generations that have served in the U.S. Navy.

For over 25 years he was a quality control engineer for Mason-Neilan Regulator Co. in Norwood, Mass. In 1979 he retired and moved to East Boothbay 10 years ago. He build his home in East Boothbay 21 years ago and had been summering here for 57 years.

Mr. Spear was a member of the American Legion Post #36, and All Saints-Ashmont Church in Dorchester, Mass. He enjoyed reading about and riding in cars. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends, encouraging them to come to Maine to enjoy the ocean and the beautiful surroundings. He had an incredible sense of humor and will be missed greatly.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jane Regan Spear of East Boothbay; a daughter, Elizabeth Jane Spear of Somerville, Mass; two sons, Stephen Albert Spear of Westwood, Mass, and Andrew James Spear of Kennebunk; a sister, Eleanor Curtis of Randolph Center, Vt.; grandchildren, David Michael Spear of Dedham, Mass., Laura Jean O'Handley of Woburn, Mass., Mark Stephen Spear of Lowell, Mass., Kerry Lynn Wilson of Wilmington, Mass., William Scott Spear of Westwood, Mass., Kasey Christine Spear of Kennebunk; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Sunday, February 21 at St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Boothbay. The Rev. Margaret S. Russell officiated. A service at All Saints-Ashmont Church in Dorchester, Mass. will be announced at a later date.

Donations may be made in loving memory to OMEGA, Emotional Support Services, 34 Heath St., Somerville, MA 02145. Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lisa T. Spencer
1999-04-29

Lisa Tavenner Spencer, 38, of Arrowsic, attorney at law, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 21 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Brunswick on July 28, 1960, she was the daughter of Attorney and Mrs. Thomas Tavenner of Sawyers Island, Boothbay.

Mrs. Spencer attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from the Boothbay Region High School in 1978. She was a graduate of Smith College and the University of Virginia Law School. She was an associate with the law firm of Verrill and Dana in Portland. In 1989 she joined her father, Thomas Tavenner, where she specialized in family law and subsequently joined the firm of Moncure and Barnicle in Brunswick where she was an associate at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband, David M. Spencer, Assistant Attorney General, of Arrowsic; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Spencer, age 7; a son, William Tavenner Spencer, age 2; her parents, Attorney and Mrs. Thomas Tavenner of Boothbay; and two brothers, Thomas W. Tavenner, Jr. and John K. Tavenner.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday, April 24 at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church. The Rev. David Grishaw-Jones officiated.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Kids First Center, 2222 St. Johns Street, Portland, ME 04102.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Barbara G. Spinney
1999-03-04

Barbara G. Spinney, 73, Jefferson, died Feb. 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born in Malden, Mass., she was the daughter of Kenneth and Ethel Steele Rand.

She resided in Greenland, N.H., for most of her life, where she was a homemaker and caregiver to four children. She was a member of the Community Congregational Church and the Ladies Guild of Greenland. She moved to Jefferson three years ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda L. Richards of Greenland, N.H., and Linda L. Campbell of Fernadina Beach, Fla.; two sons, Richard R. Spinney of Beaumont, Tex., and Clayton S. Spinney II of Jefferson; one brother, David Rand of Springfield, Va.; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later time. Arrangements are under the direction of Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

If desired, donations may be made to the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, to Orff's Corner Community Church, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Charles E. Sprague Sr.
1999-04-08

Charles E. Sprague Sr., 92, a long-time summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, died March 31 in Massachusetts.

Born in Duxbury, Massachusetts in 1907, he was married for 54 years to the former Fozena Dunton of Boothbay Harbor who predeceased Charles in 1988. Since the early 1960s they summered in her family's home in Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Sprague loved Maine and Boothbay Harbor and thoroughly enjoyed his days afield, bird hunting or fishing. He liked fresh and saltwater fishing, and was particularly fond of catching mackerel and bringing in his catch all cleaned and washed and delivering them to his many friends.

Surviving is his second wife, Helen, of Scituate, Massachusetts; two sons, Edward D. Sprague of Chelmsford, Mass., and Charles E. Sprague Jr. of Plymouth, Maine; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, many of whom reside in the Boothbay region.

There will be a graveside service at the Mayflower cemetery in Duxbury, Mass. during the week of April 12.

Clara Smith Stanley
1999-03-04

Clara Smith Stanley, 76, of Willow Valley Lake Manor, died Feb. 25 at St. Joseph Hospital, Lancaster, Penn., after a brief illness.

Born in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 1, 1922, she was the daughter of John Smith Billingslea and Frances Knowles Billingslea.

She married John R. Stanley on March 30, 1946.

For many years she had spent time at a summer residence in South Bristol.

Mrs. Stanley had been an elementary school teacher for the New Canaan Public Schools, New Canaan, Conn., from 1960 to 1979, having taught kindergarten and 3rd grade. She had enjoyed teaching very much and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchild.

She was of the Episcopalian faith.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas E. (Constance) Vickery of Rockville, Md.; two sons, John Stanley of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Smith B. Stanley of New York City; and one granddaughter, Christine F. Stanley of Minnesota.

Arrangements were under the direction of Chas. Snyder Funeral Home, Lancaster, Penn.

Cora J. Starbird
1998-04-16

SOUTH PARIS Cora J. Starbird, 85, of South Paris died Saturday April 11, 1998 at the Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She was born at Mason Township on March 19, 1912, the daughter of John A. and Ethel G. Judkins MacKenzie.

Mrs. Starbird was educated in Mason Township schools in a one room school house. She had worked for many years for J.J. Newberrys in Norway and had worked for Smiths Shop & Save for over 20 years, retiring in 1992 at the age of 80. She has lived in the South Paris area for most of her life. She married Bertrand A. Starbird on August 27, 1931 and Mr. Starbird died in March of 1958.

She is survived by one daughter, Marian Turner of South Paris; one sister, Madelyn Barker of Norway; two grandchildren, Vicki Turner Dalot of North Carolina and Brenda Millett of Waterford; four great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Dalot of North Carolina and Sunny and Nina Millett of Waterford. She was predeceased by four brothers, Allen, William, Fred, and John Jr.; four sisters, Cecelia, Ella, Elizabeth, and Alice.

Funeral services were held at Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris. Interment will be in the Norway Pine Grove cemetery South Paris. Donations in Mrs. Starbird's memory may be sent to the Market Square Health Care Center Activity Fund, South Paris, ME 04281.

Roland S. Stearns
1999-05-06

WEST PARIS - Roland S. Stearns, 86, died Sunday, May 2, at the Ledgeview Nursing Home, West Paris.

A life long resident of the area, he lived on the East Bethel Road, Rumford Center.

He was born in Rumford Point on August 15, 1912, the son of Walter and Carrie (Hall) Stearns, and had attended the Rumford Point Schools.

Mr. Stearns had worked with his father for the State of Maine on bridge construction, then did custodial work at the Rumford Point School and later worked at Oxford Paper Co. in Rumford for many years until retirement in 1972 from the Digester Department.

He had worked and delivered wood for many years in the area. He loved baseball, especially the Red Sox.

He was married in Rumford Center on March 4, 1932, to the late Thelma Bessey, who died in Rumford on March 19, 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Stearns and his wife, Dorothy June, of Rumford Center and Benton Monk and his wife, Gloria, of Berlin, NH; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Sandra) Clement of Andover and Mrs. Janice Hill of Bethel; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great granddaughters.

At Mr. Stearns' request there were not visiting hours, but graveside services were held on Wednesday, May 5, at the Rumford Center cemetery with Reverend Duane Waite officiating.

Donations may be made to the Ledgeview Nursing Home Activity Fund, 141 Bethel Road, West Paris, ME 04289 or to Calvary Congregational Church, 1063 South Main Street, Andover, ME 04216.

Arrangements were under the care of Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

J. Thompson Steel
1998-11-19

Tom Steel, 71, of Bristol died November 4 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta after a long battle with heart disease.

He was born September 27, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Alexander Wilson Steel and Marion Thompson Steel, and was educated at Trinity College and General Motors Institute. He was involved in the automotive business for many years, and at one time owned Fair Cadillac-Olds Co. in Danbury, Connecticut.

After eleven years of struggling with an alcohol addiction, he spent much of his life in the field of substance abuse and rehabilitation. He developed a youth education program and an employees assistance program for industry, also serving as director of both the Meridian House Foundation in Stamford, a half-way house, and at High Watch Farm in Kent, Connecticut, the oldest residential treatment facility in the nation using the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous as the basis for its recovery program.

In 1990 he was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Soviet-American Conference on Alcoholism in Moscow, and hosted numerous Russian doctors at High Watch Farm. He was instrumental in establishing Mountainside in Canaan, Connecticut, modeled after High Watch.

An avid sailor and outdoorsman, he also loved hunting, fishing, and golf. He spent the last three years of his life on the Maine coast, and continued to be active in the local A.A. community trying to help others. He also enjoyed the theatre, especially musicals, films and art.

Besides his wife, Joyce, daughter of Albert M. Eames, Jr. and the late Ardath Eames of Waldoboro and Boothbay, he leaves four children from his marriage to the late Patricia Hoyt: Alexander Wilson Steel of Parker, Colorado, John Thompson Steel, Jr. of Englewood, Colorado, Hollister Steel Armour of Kenilworth, Illinois and Anthony Hoyt Steel of Englewood, Colorado; two stepchildren, Kari Richardson Riess of Brooklyn, New York and Alec Eames Richardson of Portland; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at the Warren ((Connecticut) Con-gregational Church at 11 a.m. on December 12. A short service is planned Saturday, November 21, at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Wilson House, Village St., East Dorset, VT 05253; High Watch Farm, P.O. Box 607, Kent, CT 06757; or Mountainside, Box 717, Route 7, Canaan, CT 06018.

Rufus E. Stetson Jr.
1999-07-22

Rufus E. Stetson Jr., 77, of Damariscotta, died Saturday, July 16 after suffering a heart attack at Wawenock Country Club, Walpole.

Born February 11, 1922, in New York City, he was a son of Dr. Rufus E. and Irma (Tierney) Stetson Sr.

A graduate of Bowdoin College, Mr. Stetson also earned his law degree from George Washington University. Mr. Stetson entered the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was both an aviator and naval test pilot. Following his discharge, he worked in private law practice in Washington, D.C., later working with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. He was an attorney for the Tax Division of the Department of Justice - Litigation Section and prior to retiring worked for several years as regional Council for the Northeast, U.S. Customs Service.

A former member of the Maine House of Representatives, Mr. Stetson served on many government committees and boards in both Damariscotta and Newcastle.

He was a registered Maine Guide, an active member of St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle, a member of both the Lincoln County and U.S. Chess Clubs, the Wiscasset Fire Society and the Lincoln County Historical Society. He was also a long-time member of the Alna Lodge of Masons, Damariscotta, active with Miles Memorial Hospital and was an honorary member of the Bristol Area Lions Club.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret White Stetson and his second wife, Jeanette Cole Stetson.

Survivors include three sons, Rufus, III of San Cristobal, Mexico, Thomas of Brunswick, and Ethan and his wife Debbie of Wiscasset; one daughter, Tierney of Austin, Texas; two step-sons, Reginald Saunders and wife Sue of Boca Raton, Florida, and John Saunders and wife Kim, of Detroit, Michigan; a step-daughter, Paige Saunders of West Palm Beach, Florida; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were Wednesday, July 21, at the Strong Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 22 at St. Andrew's Church with Rev. Stephen White officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Hillside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta, in his memory.

Ruth J. Stevens
1998-06-25

Ruth J. Stevens, of Wiscasset, wife of Harold C. Stevens Jr., died Monday, June 22 at her home.

She was born in Wiscasset, a daughter of Everett F. and Hazel M. Jackson, and was a 1948 graduate of Wiscasset Academy.

After 30 years of service Mrs. Stevens retired from the First National Bank of Damariscotta in 1997.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary post of Richmond.

Surviving are her husband of Wiscasset; two sisters; two nieces and two nephews.

There will be no visiting hours and no funeral. Burial will be in Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are by Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home.
