Charles Addison Stewart Jr.
1998-08-06

Charles Addison Stewart Jr., a former executive with Exxon Corporation and an avid sailor, died Tuesday, July 28, at St. Andrews Hospital of complications from a progressive respiratory illness. He was 67.

Born on June 15, 1931 in Crisfield, Maryland, he grew up on Long Island, New York and attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania on an ROTC scholarship. He served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1956 and was stationed in Pearl Harbor and Japan.

From 1956 to 1983, Mr. Stewart worked as a financial and administrative executive for Exxon Corporation and certain of its affiliates, including Butterworth Systems, Inc., Exxon Research & Engineering Co., Esso Pappas Co., Lago Transport Co. and Esso Libya. His stint at Exxon allowed him to travel and sail all over the world while living in Venezuela, Libya, Aruba and Greece. After Mr. Stewart returned to the United States in 1970, he lived and worked in the New York metropolitan area. From 1979 to 1981, while working for Mayor Edward Koch as an ``on loan" project manager, he implemented a number of changes that improved revenues and reduced costs of government offices in New York City.

After leaving Exxon in 1983, Mr. Stewart worked for four years as a comptroller and administrator for MacNeil-Lehrer Productions, the independent television company that produces the ``MacNeil/ Lehrer Newshour." In 1987, he left MacNeil-Lehrer so that he could live full time on Southport, where he and his wife had finished renovating a home. For the last ten years, he kept busy in Maine working as a tax consultant, a real estate broker, a business broker, a yacht broker and a controller and treasurer for a construction company. Following the death of his wife, Nancy, in 1994, he occasionally worked as a charter captain in the British Virgin Islands.

But for all his work accomplishments, Mr. Stewart will be remembered most by his family and friends for his ``intense socialization" skills. He loved parties, good and bad jokes, singing and piano playing. In his vigorous pursuit of the camaraderie of men and women, he joined countless organizations, including yacht clubs in Libya, Aruba, Greece, New York and Maine, Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey, YMCAs in New York City and Boothbay Harbor and even bowling teams whenever he could find time. In addition, he was an active member of a number of church congregations and at least one veterans group.

Sailing, however, was his passion. He learned to sail as a boy on the waters of Capitol Island. In 1947, he bought his first one design, Eight Ball, and one summer came close to winning almost every race at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. Throughout his life, he was an enthusiastic racer and often took part in such sailboat races as the Bermuda Race, the Block Island Race and the Monhegan Race. Starting in 1994, Mr. Stewart spent more than half of each year living on his boat in the Caribbean. He was on his way to the British Virgin Islands on his boat, Andromeda, when his respiratory disease was first diagnosed in Bermuda in July, 1997.

Survivors include two children from his first marriage, Charles A. Stewart, III and Diane S. Jones; four step-children from his second marriage, Myers, Sarah and Amy Bartlett and Lee Bartlett George; three step-grandchildren, Sarah Mariah, Dylan and Sampson George; and two sisters, Margaret and Sally Ann Stewart.
