Cynthia Eileen Carroll
Cynthia Eileen Carroll, 53, a long time resident of Gray, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2003.
Cindy was born Cynthia Eileen Murphy on March 8, 1950 in Hartford, Conn. She married Michael E. Carroll, of Gray on December 7, 1974.
She served eighteen years on the staff at Gray-New Gloucester High School, where she worked closely with the students and the faculty. For the last two years, she worked at Alltech, a division of the Spurwink Institute, where she assisted in the promotion of assistive technologies for the disabled.
An avid gardener, Cindy loved to spend time tending her flowers.
She was a passionate lover of animals and was devoted to her many pets. She also enjoyed reading, baking turkey cookies and was learning to play the piano.
She is survived by her husband, Michael of Gray; her son, James and his wife Melanie of Gorham; her son, Sean of Arlington, VA; her father and mother-in-law, Robert and Charlene Carroll of Gray; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She is predeceased by her beloved pets, Buddy, Ember, DJ and Princess.
The memorial service will be held at Saint Gregory's Church in Gray on Saturday, August 9, at 11 A.M. The service will be officiated by Father James Knox. All other arrangements are being made by Wilson Funeral Home. A reception will be held immediately following the services at the home of Jeannie Burnell, 181 Shaker Road, in Gray.

Daisy Doughty, 91
Daisy Doughty, 91, of Gray, died last Tuesday.
She was born in Woodland, ME, on August 31, 1908, the daughter of Chester and Sephronia Wilkins Trenholm. She had lived in Gray since 1964, moving here from Lynn, MA.
Mrs. Doughty was a member of the First Congregational Church of Gray, Gray Historical Society and the Gray Library. She taught ceramics for 40 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert W. Doughty, and her daughter, Marilyn F. Build. She is survived by one son, Albert W. Doughty, Jr., of Gray; a granddaughter, Susand Fleck, of Naples; and two great-grandchildren, Dustin and Jacob Fleck, of Naples.
A graveside service will be held at 9 A.M. on Saturday, July 8, in Gray Village Cemetery, with Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating.

Danford Allen

Danford D. Allen, Sr., 52, died Friday, March 10, at Central Maine Medical Center after a short illness.
Born in New Vineyard, Maine, the son of Clarence and Florence Cleveland Allen, he attended Walton High School in Auburn.
Mr. Allen-who preferred to be called Dan or Danny-liked to hunt and fish, and he was known for his sense of humor, his smile and the good word he had for everyone. He loved to trade with people, trading anything from cars to tools.
He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator, and was a member of Bible Believing Baptist Church, of Gray.
Mr. Allen was predeceased by one son, Danny D. Allen, Jr., in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Donna Merrill Allen, of Gray; one daughter, Dorene Allen Alcott, of Greeneville, TN; one brother, Kenneth Allen, of Gray; one half-sister, Joyce Buck, of Winthrop; three half-brothers, Elmer F. Berry, of Greene, Roland Berry, of Minot, and John L. Berry, of Readfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Bible Believing Baptist Church, with Pastor Darwin Vail officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Donna Allen, 18 Hunts Hill Road, Gray.

Daniel H. McLeod
Daniel H. McLeod, 79, of New Gloucester, passed away April 28 at Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Portland on June 20, 1925, the son of John J. and Albina Charland McLeod.
He was one of five sons who served in World War II. Daniel fought with the 5th Army in Italy, where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery.
He was a proud member of the Gray Post #86 American Legion, where he was the Past Post Commander, a member of 40&8, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6859 in Portland and Amvets Post #6 in New Gloucester.
He worked for many years for Lucas Tree Company, and retired from S.D. Warren Company, in Westbrook. He and his brother Norman owned and operated McLeod's Restaurant in New Gloucester during the 1970s.
Dan loved animals, especially his dog, Penny. He loved to garden. He was gifted in repairing mechanical and electrical equiment. He spent most of his retired years operating his HAM radio equipment and talking to people all over the world. His call sign was KINND.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorthy Wing McLeod, in 1994, and by his brothers, Merton J. McLeod and Francis L. McLeod.
He is survived by his sister, Ellen Pride, of Portland; brothers Norman T. McLeod and wife June, of Portland, John J. McLeod and wife Thelma, of Phoenix, AZ; stepchildren Karen Stone, of Auburn, Floyd Wing, of Gray, and Thomas Wing, of Portland; very dear friend Louis Nielsen, of New Gloucester; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his faithful dog, Penny.

David P. Dube
David P. Dube, 49, of Gray, died Wednesday, March 31, after a long illness.
Mr. Dube was born in Portland, a son of John F. and Alice I. Thomes Dube, Jr.
He was educated in the South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School in 1972. He attended the University of Maine in Portland and Andover College.
He was an avid fisherman,
hunter
and outdoorsman, who enjoyed boating and skiing.
For many years, Mr. Dube was a truck driver in the local area, having driven for Fielding's Oil, Breggy Oil and Liberty Oil.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Dawn DePaolo, of Gray; his parents, of South Portland; two brothers, Mark R. Dube, and his wife, Sharon, of Gray, and John F. Dube III, and his wife, Cynthia, of Portland; two sisters, Sharon L. Cote, of Skowhegan, and Cheryl Jones, and her husband, Doug, of south Portland; and nieces and nephews.

Christina M. Hirning
Christina M. Hirning, age 79, of Rustic Road, Gray, died Tuesday at a Windham health care facility after a long illness. Born in Portland, she was a daughter of Albert A. and Mary Bonvie Doiron. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Portland (now Catherine McCauley High School).
During World War II, Mrs. Hirning worked at Fort Williams. She had also worked for Owen Moore in Portland, GMC Trucks in South Portland and MacDonald-Paige in Portland. She retired in 1985. Mrs. Hirning enjoyed gardening, auctions, music and dancing, but her greatest pastime was her family.
Her husband Frederick E. Hirning, Sr., died in 1997 and a son, David M. Gerardo died in 1992. Surviving her are 3 sons: Peter T. Gerardo of Gray; John E. Gerardo of Standish and Joseph R. Gerardo of New Gloucester; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter.
The family suggests contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.

Donald Kelley, Sr
Donald Kelley, Sr., who was born in 1927, has died peacefully after a brief illness at Central Maine Medical Center, with his family by his side.
He was the loving husband of Brenda and the cherished father of Michael O'Brien, of Gray, Heather Millett, of Raymond, Karen Roberts, of Standish, Donald K. Kelley, Jr., of Unity, and David O'Brien, of Rapid City, ND.
He was a proud World War II veteran. He retired 15 years ago after a long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed spending his retirement years with his wife, children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was also an avid sports fan who loved a good game of golf with his friends, and he was a loyal fan of the Portland SeaDogs and the New England Patriots.
Donald will always be loved and remembered by all whose lives he enhanced.

Donald Melvin Christie
First superintendent of Gray-New Gloucester School District
Gray resident Donald Melvin Christie, 90, a retired science teacher and superintendent of schools in Bethel and Gray, died Sunday, September 27, in Norway, after a brief illness.
Born in Orneville, Maine, on August 26, 1908, one of four children of Warren Southard and Eva (Morgan) Christie, Mr. Christie grew up on the family farm and in Milo, where he attended high school. He received his degree in Chemistry from Colby College in 1933, thereafter embarking on a professional career as science teacher and school administrator.
He did graduate study at Harvard University and the University of Maine, from which he received his master's degree in Education.
For many summers, beginning in his high school years, he worked at the Atlantic House in Scarborough Beach; during World War II, he did summer work in the South Portland shipyard. He taught in schools in Bradford and Liberty, Maine, and was principal of Buckfield High School before he moved, in 1946, to Bethel, to become Superintendent of Schools.
He married Dorothy Doble, of Milo, on September 2, 1937. They had two children: a daughter, Dawne Frances, who became a classical pianist and was elected Miss Maine of 1963, and a son, Donald M., Jr., a physician.
In 1960, Mr. Christie moved to Gray, where he became the first superintendent of the newly-formed Gray-New Gloucester School District. Even after his retirement, he continued to serve as District Business Manager for many years.
Throughout his life, Mr. Christie was an avid sportsman. He learned to hunt and fish with his father and brother, and played high school football and baseball, sports he later coached at schools where he taught. At Colby, he was a middle-distance runner, and, in 1929, he was one of six runners in Portland's first Patriots' Day race. The news photo of the start of that race clearly showed him poised, immediately to the starter's right, wearing black dress shoes, because in those days before Nike and New Balance, `they were the only pair of shoes that really fit me!' Later, he officiated at local track meets, and led friends and family on many hikes over Maine's mountain trails.
Once retired, he continued to tend his large garden, and, at his children's suggestion, enthusiastically took up golf, laying down his clubs only when illness prevented him from venturing out on the links and planting his garden. He was a Boy Scout leader in Buckfield and Bethel, and an active member of the Gray Kiwanis, from which he received the `Kiwanian of the Year' award in 1988 and 1991.
In addition to his very active outdoor life, Mr. Christie was a great reader, preferring biographies and works of history and poetry. A sometime poet himself, his greatest accomplishment was the fulfillment of his long-time desire to explore the Christie family tree 10 generations back to the birth of Jesse Christie in Scotland. Beginning in October of 1979, and continuing for five years, this quest was his passion, as he taught himself the rudiments of genealogical research and embarked upon travels throughout New Brunswick and the Northeast and Midwest, spending countless hours poring over deeds and other public records, visiting graveyards and talking and corresponding with hundreds of people who might reveal a previously lost family tie.
This labor of love culminated in the publication in 1985 of A Christie Family History and Genealogical Record Covering Thirteen Generations (1672 to the present), followed in 1991 by a second volume, A Genealogy of Jesse Christy (Christie) (1672-1739). He alone wrote and revised, typed, printed and assembled both of these volumes in his home, before sending copies out to far-flung family members and to libraries and historical societies in their communities. Correspondence with many grateful and interested family members, some newly discovered, some coming from far way to visit in person, continued until his death.
Mr. Christie is survived by his wife of 61 years; his son, Donald M., Jr., of Poughkeepsie, NY; two sisters, Warena Farnham, of Brownville Junction, and Edna Dunfee, of Orange City, FL; and two grandchildren. His older brother, Lindon, and his daughter, Dawne Shisler, had died before him.
A memorial service will be held at the Gray Congregational Church at 2 P.M. on Saturday, October 3.
