James B. Strout
1999-01-28

NORWAY - James B. Strout, 67, of Oxford died Monday January 25, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born in Poland on November 2, 1931, the son of Manley and Jennie Winslow Strout. He was educated in Poland and Mechanic Falls schools.

He had worked at Pioneer Plastics for many years as a forklift operator He enjoyed the out of doors especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the National Riflemen's Association, He also served in the National Guard for many years.

He married Helen J, Strout on September 30, 1967 and she died on February 20, 1996.

He is survived by his mother, Jennie Strout, of Oxford; a sister, Jeanette Pollard of Fryeburg, nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by his by a brother and his father.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Bemus cemetery in North Fryeburg.

Donations in Mr. Strout's memory may be sent to the Oxford Rescue, PO Box 173, Oxford, ME 04270 or to the American Cancer Society, Box 456, Brunswick, Maine 04011

Mrs. Charlotte E. Strout

SOUTH PARIS - Charlotte E. Strout, 90, of Mechanic Falls died Wednesday, July 14, at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Minot, August 3, 1908, the daughter of Frederick A. and Freda M. Seiberling Somerset.

She attended school in Minot and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and Farmington Normal School.

She taught school in a one room school house in Minot.

On June 23,1928, she married Alwin Strout,Sr.,who died April 1, 1982.Together they owned and operated A.W.Strout Oil Co. in Mechanic Falls.

She attended the Mechanic Falls Congregational Church.

Mrs. Strout enjoyed playing board games, cooking, gardening and being with her family.

Survivors include a son and his wife Alwin, Jr. and Merry of Mechanic Falls; a daughter and her husband Janice and Allon Cole of Minot; grandchildren, Kelly and Hank Cook, Ruth and Jesse Quirion, Jeff and Tracy Nowlin, Debbie Flohr, Kathy Cole, Linda and Scott Dube and David Strout; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Jade Cook, Jesse Quirion,Jr. and Matt Quirion, Kyle and Kelsey Nowlin, Keith and Emily Flohr, Dustin, Adam and Amanda Dube and Kasandra Strout.

Mrs. Strout was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Lane and Myrtle Wilson.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls with Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. Bearers were Jesse A. Quirion, Sr., Matthew N. Quirion, Jesse A. Quirion, Jr., David L. Strout, Jeffrey L. Nowlin and James H. Cook.

Mrs. Jennie W. Strout
1999-07-22

NORWAY - Jennie W. Strout, 86, of Oxford died Saturday, July 17, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Gorham on February 26, 1913, the daughter of Lyman and Eunice R. Hodgkins Winslow.

She was a graduate of Westbrook High School. She was a registered nurse at Kansas City Hospital and she was a nurse for the American Red Cross during WWII and continued to be associated with the Red Cross for many years after the war.

She retired from nursing in 1955. She enjoyed gardening and knitting.

She married Manley Strout in 1930, he died in 1979. She resided with her granddaughter, Brenda, and her husband Kenneth Williams of Oxford.

She is survived by 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was predeceased by three sons, Bert M., James and an infant son, Manley Strout, Jr., and one daughter, Jeannette Pollard.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, July 21, at the Pine Grove cemetery in Poland.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Theresa V. Strout
1999-07-15

SOUTH PARIS - Theresa V. Strout, 65, of Old Route 26, South Paris died Friday, evening, July 9, 1999, at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Norway, February 14, 1933, the daughter of Alfred and Rose Lachance LaBrecque.

She attended Norway Schools and graduated from Norway High School.

She was employed as a fancy stitcher a B. E. Cole Shoe Shop, Norway Footwear and Shaer Shoe in Auburn.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

She was an excellent cook. She enjoyed her flower garden, traveling, doing family genealogy and was always helping a friend in need.

She married Sherwin Strout on July 10, 1954.

Survivors include her husband of South Paris; a son, Gregory of Lisbon; a brother and his wife, David and Betty LaBrecque, of South Paris, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Strout was predeceased by three brothers, Alfred LaBrecque Jr., William LaBrecque and Raymond LaBrecque.

A celebration of her life was held Monday at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Norway with internment in Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.

Arrangements were by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Helen M. Sundermann
1999-01-21

Helen M. Sundermann, 89, Boothbay Harbor, died unexpectedly at her home on the morning of Jan. 12. born Sept. 6, 1909, in Norwalk, Conn., she was a daughter of Salvatore and Elena (Belmonte) DiBone.

Attending Norwalk schools, Mrs. Sundermann was graduated from Norwalk High School. During WWII, along with her sister-in- law, she served as an Air Raid Warden and in October of 1947 married Walter Sundermann. She and the family lived for many years in Stamford, where she was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. She was predeceased by her husband in 1975 and in 1981, came to Boothbay Harbor.

She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Frieda and John Hanlon of Damariscotta, formerly of Boothbay Harbor and was predeceased by six brothers, Gus DeBone, Daniel DeBone, Joseph DeBone, Frank DeBone, Andrew DeBone, Tony DeBone and four sisters, Theresa Perne, Lucy Furillo, Florence Breault and Rose DeBone.

Services were held Jan. 19, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Stamford. She will be laid to rest at the Fairfield Memorial Park, Stamford, following. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Fred F. Swasey
1998-02-26

NORWAY Fred F. Swasey, 89, of West Paris died Tuesday, February 17,1998 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. He was born in Portland on August 18,1908, the son of Harry A. and OlaMae Colter Swasey. He was educated in Portland schools.

From 1922-1927, starting at the age 16, he joined the United States Cavalry , stationed in Vermont. He stood honor guard at President Cleveland's funeral.

In 1928 he was an assistant riding instructor for Glenwood Riding Academy at West Medford, MA.. He returned to Portland where he was riding instructor under Charles Williams who had trained high school and liberty horses with Ringling Brothers Circus. Mr. Swasey learned and did dressage where he had played polo. He also ran Pleasant Hill Stables in Scarboro then moved to Route 1 in Scarboro where he ran Fre-Mar Stables. During World War Two he entered the Navy. While stationed in California, he met George and Mary Lawrence where he spent time with their horses. He won the `Silver' Cup for the U.S. Navy forces and trained the Lawrences' granddaughter to win the grand championship, in horsemanship. From 1946 to 1952 he ran Pleasant Hill Stables in Scarboro.

In 1970 he moved his home and stable to West Paris. He joined the American Horse Saddle Bred Association. He was also a steward and judge. He served on the AHSH zone committee, was Maine Horse Association president and Maine delegate to the New England Horse Council, chaired the Maine and New England Chapter of the Professional Horseman's Association. He was a member of the UPHA the year after it was founded. He was also manager of the Gorham Kiwanis Horse Show for 12 years (it was the first three-day horse show held in Maine), manager of two class A shows at Scarboro Downs and Fryeburg Fair along with the Acton Fair Horse Show for several years. He served at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield for 14 consecutive years. Helped with numerous four H groups in the area.

He was a member of the American Legion of which he is a Past Commander, served as President of the Boosters Club in Scarboro, Hiram Lodge AF & AM of South Portland, Knights of Pythias in Scarboro, Eastern Star in South Portland. He served on the planning board and as selectman in the Town of West Paris. He spent 19 months working on the building of the Alcan Highway in Alaska. He was inducted into the National Horseman's Hall of Fame in Kentucky.

He married Marion Harding on November 27, 1929; at the time of her death in 1991 they had been married for 67 years.

He is survived by one son, James Harding Swasey of Clearwater, FL; three daughters, Bette Ann Cushman of Hebron; Deborah C. Cerny of Oxford, and Sandi E. Pappa of Rackstream, NY; 13 grandchildren, Malinda Medlin, Richmond, IN, Deborah Racco, of Ipswich, MA, Tammy Shepard of Lubbock, TX, Dean Hughes of Woodlands, TX, James F. Swasey of Virginia, Deanna M. Vargas of Chandler, AZ, Timothy Hughes, Apache Junction, AZ, Elizabeth Gelinia of Fulton, NY, Fredrich F. Pappa, of Nassau, NY, Michael Matthew of Eliot, Cynthia A. Mitchell of Arcadia, FL, Edward D. Pappa of Oswego, NY, and Lisa Jan Cushman of Lovell and 26 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Edma Mae Swasey Aceto of Windham and Rita Barbrick Hughes of Portland. He was pre-deceased by seven brothers Leeander R. Swasey , Walter A. Swasey , Perley A. Swasey , Harry D. Swasey, John P. Swasey , Raymond A. Swasey and Everett P. Swasey.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Second Congregational Church in Norway with the Reverend Gilbert Miller officiating. Interment will be at Brooklawn cemetery in Portland. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Second Congregational Church, Lower Main St., Norway, ME 04268. Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris was in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. Sweetser
1999-05-06

SOUTH PARIS - Richard C. Sweetser, 78, formerly of Bethel died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 28, at the Maine Veterans' Home where he had been a resident for the past year.

He was born in White River Junction, VT on April 7, 1921, the son of Dave and Christine Philips Sweetser. He was one of 10 children.

He was employed for a number of years as a millworker as well as a carpenter and handyman. He faithfully served our country during World War II in the US Navy.

He married Phyllis W. Daye on Dec. 25, 1942. They resided in Bethel for most of their lives. Mrs. Sweetser predeceased him in 1987.

Mr. Sweetser was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

He is survived by two daughters, and sons-in-law, Beverly Banks and husband Edward A., Jr. of Lewiston and Brenda Bartholomew and husband Robert of Newry; a son, Richard Dave of Florida; a brother, Harvey, of Locke Mills, seven grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren.

Memorial Services were held Saturday, May 1 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris. Interment was at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.

Verna Swensen
1998-10-01

Verna Harding Swensen, 83, of Boothbay, died Wednesday, September 23 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Born October 19, 1914 in Aurora, Utah, she was the daughter of Ezra and Myrtle Ivy Harding. She grew up in Aurora and attended local schools in Salina.

Mrs. Swensen graduated from the University of Utah and from the LDS School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1937. She worked for three local doctors in Richfield, Utah until she and family moved to New York City in 1939. She retired from nursing and became a homemaker.

Mrs. Swensen and her family lived in Jackson Heights, New York until 1944 when she moved back to Provo, Utah and later moved to New York after World War II in 1947. She lived in Briarcliff, N.Y. until 1986 when she moved to Boothbay.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, crosswords and many other things.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Joseph C. Swensen of Boothbay; a daughter, Kathryn Swensen Thomson of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Dr. Frederick C. Swensen of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Dr. Paul Harding Swensen of North Salt Lake City, Utah; and five grandchildren.

A private gathering was held at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. Arrangements were by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home.
