Mr. Alfred C. Sidelinger
1999-10-21

AUBURN - Alfred C. Sidelinger, 83, of Lake Street, Auburn died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at his home.

He was born in Bethel, September 3, 1916 the son of Thurman and Grace Knight Sidelinger.

He graduated from Edward Little High School and faithfully served his country in the Army as a medic in the 103rd infantry during World War II.

He was a self employed contractor for many years .Mr. Sidelinger was a member of the Gideons, the Advent Christian Church in Auburn where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, trustee and usher.

He was loved by his family and will be missed by all who knew him.

On September 13,1942 he married Maxine Clark.

He is survived by his wife of Auburn; two daughters, Amber Jean Akers of Auburn and Carla Damon of Somerville, South Carolina; two sisters, Blanche Welch of Auburn and Winnie Demers of Auburn; one grandson and his wife, Kyle and Nancy Akers, of Fife Lake,Michigan and a great granddaughter Kailey Akers of Fife Lake,Michigan.

Mr. Sidelinger was predeceased by two brothers, Thurman and Erwin, and a sister, Phyllis Hamblin.

Graveside services were held Saturday , October 16 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Auburn.

Family and friends called at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls,Friday evening.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME.

Deborah S. Savage
1999-11-04

Deborah Susan Savage, 44, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, October 31, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Rochester, New York, she was the daughter of Lloyd G. and Rosemary (DeFrain) Palmer. In 1959 she moved to Maine and attended Bath schools. On August 5, 1972 she married James E. Savage and traveled throughout the United States as a Navy wife for 18 years. In October 1989, she moved to Wiscasset.

She loved to sew and made many beautiful dresses for her children. She was a gifted interior decorator and also a cake decorator. She home-schooled her children.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Savage of Wiscasset; one son, James G. Savage of Topsham; two daughters, Jessica A. and Jennifer R. Savage, both of Wiscasset; her mother, Rosemary Hinton and stepfather, Alfred Hinton, both of Newport, Vermont; three brothers, Steven L. Seid of Nescopeck, Penn., Michael D. Palmer of Newport, Vt., and Daniel J. Decker and his wife Lisa of Claremont, N.H.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Carol) A. Severy of Randolph, and Mary Ellen Goddard of Rumford; one granddaughter, Alannah of Topsham; one beloved aunt, Stella A. Stein of Palmyra, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Diane Savage of Wiscasset; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gerald and Helen Savage, both of West Bath; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 4 at the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen A. Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Mr. Adam Edward Schlanser Jr.
1999-11-18

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Adam Edward Schlanser Jr., 82, of Fort Washington, MD died October 14, at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C. of injuries caused by a fall.

Mr. Schlanser was the son of Col. Adam E. Schlanser, U.S. Army Medical Corps, a former commander of Walter Reed Army Hospital, and Martha Marie Echtermann.

He was born July 6, 1917, at Columbus Barracks, OH. He saw service as an enlisted man and as an officer in both the Army and the Air Force, during World War II and later Korea, retiring from the Air Force reserves as a Major.

Upon leaving the service he earned his accounting degree and worked at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. for 25 years.

For many years Mr. Schlanser spent two weeks each summer with his brother, Major General Lawrence E. Bud Schlanser, on Paris Hill.

He is survived by eight nieces and nephews, among them Juliet S. DeMont of Rochester Hills, MI and Lawrence E. Schlanser, Jr. of Northville, MI.

Burial took place in Arlington National cemetery on October 19.

Lillian M. Schnaars
1999-11-04

Lillian May Schnaars, 84, of Falmouth, died Friday morning, October 29 at Falmouth by the Sea.

Born July 29, 1915 in Union City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of George T. and Catherine (Paul) Siegel.

Mrs. Schnaars was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York where she lived until 1951, when she moved to Maywood, New Jersey. She was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Maywood, where she taught Sunday School for many years. In June of 1997 she moved to Oceanview in Falmouth.

Mrs. Schnaars enjoyed painting, ceramics, sewing and crocheting.

She is predeceased by her husband, William H. Schnaars; a brother, George Siegel; and a sister, Edith Seigel.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy J. Schnaars of East Boothbay; four nieces, Marie Latzanich of Mt. Poncoco, Penn., Anne Kundla of Dumore, Penn., Ellen Ames of Phoenix, Ariz., and Louise Ligi of Scanton, Penn.; and one nephew, Paul Siegel of Houston, Texas.

A graveside service was held Tuesday morning, November 2 at the George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, New Jersey. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Schnaars memory to the Alzheimer Disease Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite #160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.

Mrs. Colista Stevens
1999-11-11

LEWISTON - Colista (Curtis) Stevens, 77, of Auburn, died Friday, November 5, at the Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born May 11, 1922 in West Sumner, the daughter of the late Haltie and Otis Curtis.

Mrs. Stevens attended school in Sumner and Paris. She worked in shoe factories in Norway,Rumford, and Lewiston for 40 years.

Mrs. Stevens was a member of the Wm. A. Barrows Relief Corp for 50 years, Eastern Star in Buckfield, the Universalist-Unitarian Church in W. Sumner, and the Mount Tom Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed growing flowers, attending beano, and being with her children.

Mrs. Stevens is survived by two sons, Darwin Stevens and his wife, Jane, and Edwin Stevens and his wife, Sue; two daughters, Pauline Kirschner and her husband, Paul, and Jayne Averill and her husband, Edward, all of West Sumner; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Stanley Stevens and a long-time companion, Romeo Lavoie.

Visitation was held Saturday, November 6, at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Funeral services were held Sunday in the West Sumner Universalist Church. Graveside services followed in the Pleasant Pond Cemetery, West Sumner.

Contributions in Mrs. Stevens' memory may be made to the West Sumner Universalist-Unitarian Church.

Mr. Ned Strauss
1999-11-04

BALTIMORE, MD - Ned Strauss, longtime summer resident of South Waterford and former owner and director of Camp Wigwam, passed away on September 21, near his home in Baltimore, MD.

Mr. Strauss is survived by his wife, Helen, and three loving children, one of whom, Bob, currently directs the boys' camp on Bear Pond.

Ned Strauss was an inspiring and memorable character. His booming voice and uplifting spirit were his calling cards, as these are the qualities that those who knew him well will long remember.

After purchasing Wigwam in the fall of 1964, from its founder Abraham Mandelstam, Ned and Helen Strauss began the awesome task of returning the program to its former glory.

Once again ranked as one of the finest camps in the country, the memory of Ned Strauss will shine as a beacon in the summer camp industry for generations to come.

Richard S. Swett
1999-10-28

Richard Sumner Swett, 84, of Sawyers Island, Boothbay, died on Wednesday, October 20 at the St. Andrews Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

He was born on May 8, 1915 at West Boothbay Harbor, the oldest son of Alden P. and Hazel Alley Swett. In 1934 he graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School. During his high school years he played football, and was the captain of the football team his senior year.

In his youth his family spent the summers on Spectacle Island and from that experience his love of the sea was founded.

Mr. Swett was self-employed as a lobsterman and fisherman continuing the fishing heritage set by his father before him.

In 1945 he met and married Barbara May on September 8.

He thoroughly enjoyed Maine, especially the Boothbay region and when he was not on the water, he was hunting, gardening, looking for Indian relics, and reading books about Maine's history and culture.

In his later years he spent a great deal of time with his grandson George who fondly remembers going out lobster fishing or going on a bus trip with "Grampie."

After his stroke in 1989, he met many loving and kind people as a resident of the Gregory Wing.

Mr. Swett was predeceased by his wife Barbara in 1975.

Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Jean Wilson and his son-in-law George Wilson II of Sawyers Island; three grandchildren, George M. III, Barbara Jean, and Sarek Ryan Wilson, all of Sawyers Island; two brothers, Edward and Byran Swett, both of Boothbay; two sisters, Alice Reed and Judy Nason, both of Boothbay Harbor, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Mr. Swett's life was held on Monday, October 25 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home with The Rev. Thomas Keene officiating. Interment was in Oceanview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Andrews Gregory Wing, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Alvin H. Schutrumpf
1999-12-16

Alvin H. Schutrumpf, 85, of Bethesda, Maryland, died Thursday, December 2. Having graduated from Georgetown's Law School, Mr. Schutrumpf spent his career with the U.S. Government's Interstate Commerce Commission. He passed the Washington D.C. Bar the year he graduated. Beginning as staff counsel for the Commission's Commissioner, he retired as an Administrative Judge and Deputy Chief Hearing Examiner.

For the past 22 years, he spent the summers in Boothbay Harbor where he enjoyed playing tennis and meeting many new, and wonderful people. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ida; and his son, Brian, of West Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Lawrence Russell Shaw
1999-12-09

BRIDGTON - Lawrence Russell Shaw, 79, of Bridgton, died at his home on Saturday, Dec. 1, 1999.

Born on October 19, 1920, he was the son of the late Earl and Edith (Wentworth) Shaw. He graduated from the Bridgton High School and was a veteran of WWII while serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Mr. Shaw married Phyllis Libby in 1946.

He retired in 1984 from the Central Maine Power Company, where he worked as a line engineer.

Mr. Shaw served as a past commander for the VFW and belonged to the Harrison VFW, the American Legion in Bridgton, the Congregational Church in Bridgton, and the NRA.

Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, Curtis Shaw and his wife Barbara of Green; two grandchildren, Heather Desjardins and Sally Shaw; three great-grandchildren, Victoria and Katie Desjardins and Alexander Bachelder; three brothers, Norman Shaw of South Paris, Ronald Shaw of Highland, CA and Donald Shaw of Sunbury, PA; and a sister, Virginia Richardson, of South Paris. He was predeceased by his parents and one sister.

Graveside memorial services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 8, in the Forest Hills cemetery in Bridgton with the Rev. Richard Bennett officiating.

Friends who wish may donate to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Bridgton.

Marion E. Smith
1999-12-30

SOUTH PARIS - Marion E. Smith,86 of South Paris died Tuesday at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Norway,May 25,1913 the daughter of Jason and Elvira Downs Smith,Sr. She attended South Paris schools and was a homemaker.She enjoyed flowers and geneology and was a resource for her family history.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law Douglas and Juanita Smith of South Paris, one sister Eva Stanzilis of Mexico, two grandsons Jeff Smith of Virginia and Tracy J. Smith of Lewiston. She was predeceased by a son Richard two brothers Jason,Jr. and Nelson, four sisters Dorothy Smith, Florence Mitchell, Arlene Bokowsky and Edna Brown.

Family and friends may attend funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,45 Main Street,South Paris with Interment in Riverside Cemetery, South Paris.
