Eva Belle Shaw
2000-09-28

Eva Belle Shaw, 85, Augusta, wife of the late Harold E. Shaw, and a longtime resident of Route 105, died Thur., Sept. 21, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills where she had resided for the past three years.

Born in Haverhill, Mass. on May 22, 1915, she was the daughter of Ernest L. and Clarissa B. (Snowman) Chadbourne and went to school in Gardiner in her younger years. Eva was married to Harold E. Shaw in Bradford, on October 27, 1955.

Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker for most of her life, her husband was employed by Augusta Public Works for many years. Mr. Shaw died in 1982.

Eva loved to read, crochet, and do crossword puzzles. Despite her confinement to the nursing home, she loved visits from friends and family, and had a strong spirit.

Surviving are daughters, Roberta Vannah and family; Alice M. York and husband Ellsworth of Somerville; son, David L. Shaw, Sr. of Gardiner; brother, Elwyn Chadbourne, Sr. and wife Mildred of South Thomaston, five grandchildren, Althea Snowman and husband Arthur and their children, Jeremy and Sarah Snowman all of Windsor; David L. Shaw, Jr. and Monica Shaw and their mother Rae Ann Shaw, all of Augusta; Brittany Ann Weaver and her mother Dixie Weaver both of Farmingdale; and Ellsworth Hanscom of Somerville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was pre-deceased by her two brothers, Horace Chadbourne and Ernest Chadbourne, Jr. PA.

Funeral service Sept. 25, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor, with Pastor Jerry Wright of Calvary Bible Baptist Church, Whitefield, officiating. Burial followed at Maple Grove cemetery Annex, Randolph.

Todd A. Sherman

Todd Allan Sherman, 27, of Ketchikan, Alaska, died Sunday, March 19 at his home. born in Boothbay Harbor on July 2, 1972, he was the son of Paula Sherman of Williamsburg, Virginia and Teddy Dee of New Harbor. Mr. Sherman attended the University of Maine, and majored in Political Science and Public Administration and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was a financial consultant and office administrator of Alaska Financial Advisors. He enjoyed fly fishing, computers, art, and DVDs. He drew and painted beautiful landscapes. Besides his parents he is survived by his maternal grandmother Dorothy Patton of Boothbay Harbor and paternal grandparents Marie and Teddy Dee of Bremen; several aunts and uncles, and cousins; his cat, Henry; his brothers at Sigma Alpha Epsilon; his many friends and his family at Alaska Financial Advisors. There was a service in Ketchikan, Alaska on March 22 and also a memorial service Saturday, March 25 at the Newman Center, College Avenue, Orono, with Father Bob, SAE Eminent Chaplain, officiating with a reception at Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Maurice A. Sherman

Maurice Alvin Sherman, 82, of Southport, died Friday, March 31 at his home. born September 25, 1917 in Boothbay, he was the son of Chester and Ruth Gray Sherman, and was the second of six children. He grew up on Southport Island, attended local schools, and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1937. Mr. Sherman attended one year of school at the University of Maine at Orono, and studied forestry. Then, due to hard economic times, he left to serve in the Coast Guard. He later worked at Sample's Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, building mine sweepers with his father until he was drafted into the Army in 1940. During World War II, he served in North Africa and Italy as a forward observer for the 5th Army in the 178th Field Artillery and the 248th Field and Artillery Battalions. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal during the Italian Campaign for injuries he received on the battlefield. Mr. Sherman was also awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and two sharp shooter badges for the carbine and pistol. He was discharged in 1945, after serving over four years in the Army. After the war, he attended Wentworth Institute on the G.I. Bill, and studied building construction. He graduated in 1947. On October 8, 1950, he married Evelyn Pratt of Malden, Massachusetts and Southport Island. Together they raised three children, Susan, Bill and Sarah. For over 40 years he worked as a self-employed builder, and was known throughout the region for his skills as a master carpenter. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his friends in Eustis, and in Canada. He was a 50+ year member of the Southport Fire Department, a 40+ year member of Seaside Lodge #144, a member of the Boothbay Region Fish and Game Club, and served as a trustee of the Southport United Methodist Church, the Southport Memorial Library, and Southport Historical Society. In his spare time, Mr. Sherman built bamboo fly rods, furniture, a boat for himself, Island Belle, two skiffs for his grandchildren, and lamps out of exotic woods for his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sherman of Southport; his son, Bill Sherman of Southport; his daughters, Susan Jellison of Orland, and Sarah Sherman Brewer of Southport; nine grandchildren; one great-grand-daughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life was held Monday, April 3 at the Southport United Methodist Church. Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin officiated. Burial followed in the Union cemetery in Southport. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. Sherman's memory to the charity of your choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Warren L. Sidelinger

Warren L. Sidelinger, 71, of Newcastle, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. He was a son of Harry W. and Arberday Jackson Sidelinger. Mr. Sidelinger was a hunter and fisherman and enjoyed walking and being in the woods.

Surviving are his wife, Beryl Sidelinger of Newcastle; three sons, David and Warren Jr., both of Newcastle, and Tony Ray of Huntsville; one daughter, Barbara Wentworth of Newmarket, Alabama; two brothers, Robert of Bristol Mills and Kenneth of Alna; two sisters, Ann Lillian Main of Wiscasset and Arlene Coffins of Pittston; eight grand-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A spring service will be held in Pine Knoll Cemetery. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Gloria Pearl Sidelinger
2000-12-28

Gloria Pearl Sidelinger, 68, Newcastle, died at Miles Memorial Hospital. A daughter of George Washington and Lafona A. (Sedgley) Erving, she was born in Chelsea December 10, 1932.

She attended Chelsea schools and following her marriage to Harold E. Sidelinger, came here in the early 1950’s. She loved hunting and fishing, as well as needlework. She had a vast collection of Teletubbies and spoons and she also loved debating.

Gloria leaves four children, Peter E., Harry W. and Sally C. Sidelinger all of Newcastle and Carol Ann Jackson of Quincy, Mass. She also leaves two brothers, Lawrence Erving of Windsor, Charlie Erving of Shelbyville, Ind., a sister Beryl Sidelinger of Newcastle, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, a son Tom and two infants.

Services 11 a.m., Jan. 6, at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, Rev. Ernie Farrar officiating. She will be laid to rest at the Bethlehem Cemetery, Damariscotta.

Anthony Doyle Simmons
2000-08-17

Anthony Doyle Simmons, 18, died unexpectedly Aug. 14 in Waldoboro.

Anthony was born June 8, 1982 in Damariscotta, the son of Doyle R. Simmons and Joan Ray. He grew up in Hope and Waldoboro, attending the Hope Elementary School and Camden Rockport High School, later transferring to Medomak Valley High School.

He learned welding from his father and used his knowledge as a welding fabricator to weld boat parts and other things at Simmons Welding in Hope.

He was very artistic and loved to draw. He loved nature, listening to music, hunting and fishing, tinkering with things by taking them apart and putting them together in different ways. He dreamed one day of being a heavy equipment operator.

He was a joy to his family, who loved him dearly and will miss him with great sadness.

He is survived by his father, Doyle R. Simmons of Hope; mother Joan Ray of Waldoboro; paternal grandparents George and Cynthia Simmons of Cushing; maternal grandparents Roland and Lorraine Ray of Greene; sisters Jody Shay and husband Dan of Rockland and Jessica Flanders and husband Clarence of Cushing; brother Ryan Morrison of Washington; nephews Dan, Deven and Dylan Shay, all of Rockland; great grandmother Marguerite Simmons of Waldoboro; great grandfather Raymond Ames of Rockland; uncles Venson Simmons of Friendship and Randy Ray and wife Linda of Greene; aunts Valerie Cohen and husband Steve of Cushing, Rolande Dean and husband Rhett of Virginia and Kathy Asselin and husband Bert of Greene; and several cousins.

Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Thurs. Aug. 17 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at Hall’s. Burial will follow in Harbor Cemetery, Friendship. Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.

Ernest O. Sjoberg
2001-04-24

The Rev. Ernest O. Sjoberg, 73, Dresden, a pastor for 20 years, died May 14 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Rev. Sjoberg was a pastor for 10 years at the Bethel Baptist Church in Sellersvile, Penn., before serving another 10 years at the Dresden-Richmond Methodist Church.

He was born in Stockholm, Maine, a son of Fritz and Elvira Sodergren Sjoberg. He served in the Navy in Escondito, Calif., before graduating from Bob Jones University in South Carolina.

Rev. Sjoberg returned to Westfield, where he served as minister of music at the local Baptist church, and where he met Elma Kinney, whom he married two years later.

After his retirement, Rev. Sjoberg enjoyed visiting friends and the elderly, and last month led the funeral service for one of them, Grace Parmenter, of Pittson.

He frequently drove special-needs children to a school in Wiscasset, and with his wife traveled to New Mexico, Mississippi and Oklahoma for weeks at a time to visit grandchildren.

In 1984, Rev. and Mrs. Sjoberg spent the summer running a bed and breakfast at the 1826 Abbey Cogswell Barker House in Dresden. Owned by Chop Point Camp, a Christian mission camp in Woolwich, the inn had served as a retreat for camp counselors and ministers.

Mrs. Sjoberg died five years ago after 43 years of marriage.

He was proud to have raised four children who remained in the church, and spent time with his 10 grandchildren singing hymns.

Surviving are two sons, Don of Kansas and Tim of New Mexico; two daughters, Rebecca Shields of Dresden and Elizabeth Monroe of Missouri; three brothers, Everett of Vermont, Clemens of Sumner and Carl of Caribou; a sister, Ebba Jepson of Florida; and 10 grandchildren.

Visiting hours 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. May 18 at Kincer Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Richmond. Funeral services 12 p.m. May 19 at the Dresden-Richmond Methodist Church, Richmond, with Pastor John Thorpe officiating.

Barbara K. Simpson
2000-05-11

Barbara K. Simpson, 80, of Sarasota, Florida, died Sunday, April 30 in Sarasota.

Born in Cape Elizabeth on August 16, 1919, she was the daughter of John P. and Elsie M. Townsend.

Three months ago she moved to Sarasota from Falmouth. She lived most of her adult life in Port Orchard, Washington where she worked as a nurse at Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Washington.

Mrs. Simpson was predeceased by her husband Carl W. Simpson Jr.

Survivors include one daughter, Lorraine G. Biehn of Sarasota; two brothers, John P. Townsend Jr. of Lorida, Florida, and James Townsend of Boothbay; three sisters, Audrey Alston of Englewood, Florida, Jackie Drake of Georgetown, and Beverly Lytton of Sarasota.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

Louise M. Skidmore
2000-10-19

Louise M. Skidmore, 76, of Farmingdale, died Tuesday, October 10 at the Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

Born in Gardiner on February 29, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles and Doris Wing Pratt.

Mrs. Skidmore was a member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church in Gardiner, was a Sunday School teacher, Youth Fellowship leader, member of the United Methodist Women/Northern Avenue Makeria Circle and served on many church committees.

She was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, member of the Marion Chapter #63 Order of the Eastern Star, Pittston Grange #214, AROK Temple #94, Daughter of the Nile and duel member of the ANKH Temple #160 of Bangor, Samuel Grant Chapter DAR of Gardiner.

Mrs. Skidmore worked for Butler Twins Floral Shop, Hopkins Greenhouse, and the Federal Government, Dept. of Agriculture office of ASCS-Kennebec County. She volunteered at the Maine Lung Association and the Gardiner Area Food Bank. Her most memorable job was watching her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul F. Skidmore, on August 22, 1999.

Survivors include three daughters, Kay Gregory of Farmingdale, Judy Meserve and husband Jim of Farmingdale, and Janet Rines and husband Robert of Wiscasset; one brother, Lewis Pratt of North Fort Myers, Florida; three sisters, Mildred Pierce of Ashville, N.C., Dorothy and husband Tom Tavernier of Travares, Florida and Barbara Pinkham of Brunswick; six grandchildren, Lisa Gregory of Farmingdale, Lorne Gregory of Manchester, N.H., Marcie and Paul Rines of Wiscasset, Holly and Crystal Meserve of Farmingdale; brother and sisters-in-laws John and Dorothy Skidmore of Palmetto, Florida and Ralph and Claire Skidmore of Keystone Heights, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 12 at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church in Gardiner with the Rev. Elizabeth Bachelder officiating. Committal service was Friday, October 13 at the Fr. LeClair Memorial Chapel in the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the HealthReach-Hospice, American Diabetes Association and the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church.

Jessie C. Skillin
2000-09-21

Jessie C. Skillin, 86, of Wiscasset, died Tuesday, September 12 at her residence.

Born in Dresden on November 2, 1913, she was the daughter of James and Lula B. (Moody) Carlisle. She attended Dresden schools and graduated from Bridge Academy in 1932.

She married Elwyn E. Skillin and was employed at Kirstead's Drug Store in Wiscasset for a few years. She later was employed at the Woolwich Post Office as clerk. For many years Mrs. Skillin and her husband owned and operated Skillin's Roadside Garden Stand in Wiscasset.

Mrs. Skillin enjoyed reading and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

She was predeceased by her husband Elwyn E. Skillin on June 17, 1988; one sister, Susie Lilly in 1988, and one brother, Harry Carlisle.

Survivors include one son, Carroll E. Skillin of Wiscasset; one brother, Earl Carlisle of Bath; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Friday, September at the Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath, with Rev. Floyd Carter officiating. Burial followed in Forrest Hill cemetery in Dresden.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation Maine Chapter, PO Box 486, Westbrook, ME 04098.

Timothy A. Smiley
2000-05-18

Word has been received of the death of Timothy Alan Smiley, 36, of Davenport, Iowa and East Boothbay, who died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 25, 1999.

On August 7, 1963 he was born in Rock Island, Illinois to Barry and Shirley Herbert Smiley. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1981.

Mr. Smiley was a self-employed carpenter and gardener. He had been employed with Boothbay Home Builders, as well as tending to a few local gardens in the Boothbay Region. One of his gardens was featured in the Boothbay Region Garden Tour last year.

Besides his many talents, Mr. Smiley was an avid bicycle enthusiast enjoyed travel and spending the day at Popham Beach, his "little bit of heaven."

He was a member of Kindred, a social club, located in Augusta.

Survivors include his father, Barry Smiley of Davenport, Iowa; his mother, Shirley Miers, of Rock Island, Illinois; two brothers, Barry Smiley of Salem, Oregon, and Robert Smiley of Rock Island, Illinois; one sister, Marilyn Brent of Rock Island; and close friend, Ron Bouffard of East Boothbay.

A memorial service was held in Rock Island, Illinois on December 28, 1999.

At Mr. Smiley's request, his body was cremated. A local celebration of his life will be held at Popham Beach on Saturday, May 20 at noon. Those interested in helping to commemorate his life are asked to meet at noon in the southwest corner of the parking lot at Popham Beach. His ashes will be scattered by the mouth of the Morse River.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name and donations should be made to Kindred of Maine, P.O. Box 4656, Augusta, ME 04330-4656.
