Merton H. Spurr
2000-08-24

Merton H. Spurr, 85, a longtime resident of Eliot, died August 19 in Yarmouth following a brief illness.

He was born in Boothbay Harbor, a son of Vernon and Edna Hardwick Spurr. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1934.

He served in the Army during World War II with the 19th Infantry Service Company.

Mr. Spurr learned the machinist trade at Saco Lowell Shop in Biddeford. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972 after 30 years.

He was past commander of Eliot Memorial Post, American Legion, a lifelong member of Seaside Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Boothbay Harbor and was a member of the Piscataquis Order of the Eastern Star in Kittery.

His pastimes included hunting, fishing and woodworking.

His wife, F. Elizabeth Foss Spurr, died in 1998.

Surviving are a daughter, Sara E. Hetzel of Cape Elizabeth; two sisters, Elizabeth Hayes of California and Eleanor Forbes of Rockland; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors was held Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot.

Arrangements are by Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

Edward Stansfield Jr.
2000-04-27

Edward H. Stansfield Jr., 69, of Wiscasset, died Thursday, April 20 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. A Maine resident since 1977, he was born and raised in Akron, Ohio and was a graduate of Kenyon College. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the USS Newman K. Perry during the Korean War. Mr. Stansfield was an active volunteer at Walker Point Adult Day Care at Miles Health Care Center as well as the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Survivors include his wife, Ethel H. of Wiscasset; and his sons, Edward H. III and wife, Amy of Meriden, New Hampshire; George H. and wife, Elaine, of Paris, France; Timothy A. and wife, Emiko, of New York City; one grandson, Sheldon Edward of Meriden, N.H.; and a sister, Ann S. Reed of Akron, Ohio. An open house for friends and family was held on April 26 at the residence. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Sheepscot Valley Children's House, P.O. Box 449, Wiscasset, ME 04578, or the Edward Stansfield Book Fund at the Kenyon College Library, Gambler, OH 43022-9623. Arrangements were under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine in Belfast.

Charles Albert Staples
1999-10-14

Charles Albert Staples, 70, Waldoboro, died Sat., Oct. 9th at the Veterans Hospital in Togus. He was born July 14, 1929 in South Gardiner the son of Henry and Olivia Holt Staples. He was wounded in the Korean War.

He loved people, animals and painting. He was a loving brother and will be missed by all.

He is survived by two sisters; Barbara Jordan of South Gardiner and Diane Bodge of Pittston, two brothers; Donald Staples of Gardiner and Norman Staples of South Gardiner and companion Pat Brown of Augusta, plus several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. on Thur., Oct. 14th at the Mt. Hope cemetery in South Gardiner. Pastor Thomas Rawley will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Evelyn Mae Staples
2000-08-17

Evelyn Mae Staples, 61 Waldoboro, died Aug. 16, at her home after a long illness.

She was born in Rockland, a daughter of James and Ella R. Widdecombe, and attended local schools.

She was the companion of William L. Morse of Waldoboro.

A grandson, Timothy P. Shorey, died previously.

Surviving are a son, William Jr. of Rockland; daughters, Peggy S. Guilford of Rockland Mrs. Gregory (Maryann) Davis of South China and Mrs. Patrick (Gail M.) Shorey of Winslow; brother James C. Widdecombe of South Portland; twin sister Mrs. William (Violet) Pinkerton of Rockland; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.

Edwin C. Stephenson
2000-06-01

Edwin C. Stephenson, 73, of Franconia, New Hampshire, died Monday, May 22, after a battle with cancer.

Born in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Preston T. and Florence (Brown) Stephenson. He attended the Fessenden School in West Newton, Mass.; St. Mark's School in Southboro, Mass.; and the Cambridge School of Business in Cambridge, Mass.

Mr. Stephenson lived for many years in Sugar Hill before moving to Franconia a few years ago. While in Sugar Hill he owned and operated the Ski Pine Club.

He was an avid skier and sailing enthusiast. He held membership in the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mass., and the Southport (Maine) Yacht Club.

Mr. Stephenson served in the U.S. Navy and worked for several years at the United Shoe Machines Company.

Survivors include two sons, Tim and Sam Stephenson, both of Franconia; and two brothers, P. Taply Stephenson, Swampscott, Mass. and George Stephenson, Marblehead, Mass.

A graveside service will be held in the Elmwood cemetery in Franconia on Sunday, June 4, at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at the Franconia Inn, Easton Road, Franconia, N.H. The Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Cora E. Steward
2000-06-01

Cora Evelyn Steward, 98, Waldoboro, died May 23.

Formerly from Mifflintown, Penn., born in Shamokin, Penn. Nov. 2, 1901, she was the daughter of Arthur Warmkessel and Lillian Kehler.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Carl Steward, and her grandson, Jeffrey Ames Orcutt.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Richard Orcutt of Waldoboro, and son James C. Steward Jr. of Summerfield, Fla., 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Mifflintown.

Major William M. Stewart II
2000-09-14

Major William Watson Stewart II (USA Ret.) 86, died at Avon Health Center, Avon, Conn., on Sunday, September 10.

Born in Forfar, Glenogle, Scotland, on May 18, 1914, he was the son of the late James Robertson and Elizabeth (Campbell) Stewart. He grew up in West Hartford and had lived in Unionville following his marriage to the late Eveline (Moses) Stewart in 1944, moving to Village Gate Farmington in 1996. He maintained a summer home in East Boothbay for 29 years.

In 1932 he graduated from the William High School in West Hartford. During his working career he returned to school to complete his college education, graduating from the University of Hartford, Class of 1964, where he received an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. He was a 20-year member of the Connecticut Army National Guard and served 42 months in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Mr. Stewart resigned from the Connecticut National Guard as a Major in 1957. He was a member of Farmington Memorial Post 10361, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Farmington, Conn.

In 1979 Mr. Stewart retired from Northeast Utilities (NU) where he had been a District Business Office Supervisor in Torrington. His 43-year career with NU began when one of the original companies that composed NU, the Hartford Electric Light Company, hired him in 1936.

He had been a trustee of the Farmington Village Green and Library Association in Farmington. For over 50 years he was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Unionville. For many years Mr. Stewart, an active Republican, served on the Farmington Town Plan and Zoning Commission, first as an alternate and subsequently as a full-time commissioner.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Cameron Stewart of Rockland and Seth Hamilton Stewart of Boston, Mass. and Newcastle; sister-in-law, Mrs. James Campbell Stewart of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; cousins, William Watson Stewart, III of Kensington, Md., Mrs. Wells Brown of Ridgefield, Conn., and Miss Margaret R. Stewart of San Francisco, Calif., and several nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street in Unionville, with the Rev. Thomas F. Dean, Pastor, officiating. Private Interment will be in the Moss-Stewart family plot in Greenwood cemetery in Avon, Conn.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the First Church Of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street, Unionville, CT 06085.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.S. Waterman & Sons Eastman-Waring, 497 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Mass.

George W. Stickney Jr.
2000-10-12

George W. Stickney Jr., 67, of Jefferson, died Monday, October 9 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

Born in Wiscasset on October 23, 1932, he was the son of George W. And Louise A. (Grover) Stickney Sr. He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in the class of 1950. He served in the United States Army. On September 5, 1953 he married Gertrude M. Lincoln. Until 1963 he was employed at Chase Farm Equipment in Whitefield, and until 1975, he was employed by Bridge Construction in Windsor. He currently owned and operated Clary Lake Auto Parts in Jefferson.

Mr. Stickney was a member of the Riverside Lodge of Masons where he was a two-time Past Master, Past Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jefferson and a member of the South Jefferson United Baptist Church. Years ago he was active in performing at minstrel shows and playing tournament horseshoes.

He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Stickney on July 16, 1993; one daughter, Darlene R. Anderson on August 25, 1999; and one sister Adeline Harvey.

Survivors include one son, George W. Stickney III and his wife Wanda L. of Whitefield; one daughter, Bertha "Bee Bee" Naylor and her husband Michael of South Bristol; two sisters, Blanche Johnson of Wiscasset and Diane Sutherburg of Newcastle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchild-ren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 12 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 13 at the United Baptist Church of South Jefferson with Pastor JoAnne Hilton officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery in Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Donald A. Stockwell
2000-01-27

Donald Andrews Stockwell, 65, Ocean Point, formerly of Danvers, Mass., died Jan. 24 of cancer at his home.

Born in Montpelier, Vt., a son of Herbert B. and Alice Andrews Stockwell, he was a 1952 graduate of Cony High School, Augusta, and attended Maine Central Institute. He served in the National Guard from 1953 to 1955.

On June 6, 1960 he married Barbara Blanchard.

Mr. Stockwell worked as vice president and general manager of RIS Paper Co., Woburn, Mass., until his retirement in December 1988.

He served on the board of the Boston Paper Trades-New England Paper Trades. He was active in the printing industries of New England, was a trustee and former president of the Ocean Point Colony Trust, and an avid member of the Boothbay Region Country Club.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Barbara A. Stockwell of Ocean Point; a brother, Andrew Cobb of Hull, Mass.; a son, Todd B. of Melrose, Mass.; three daughters: Susan B. Gagnon of Boothbay Harbor, Kimberly A. Andrews of Damariscotta, and Holly M. Gomes of Boxford, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral Mass: Jan. 27, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor, Rev. Jack Graham officiating. Burial: Following in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay. Reception: Immediately following, Russell House, Boothbay Harbor. Arrangements: Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Harold "Bud" Earl Strout
2000-04-06

Harold “Bud” Earl Strout, 75, of Wiscasset, died Thurs., March 30 at his home.

He was born in Brunswick April 4, 1924, the son of Ivory and Emily Marius Strout. He was a 1941 graduate of Morse High School. For six years and during WWII Mr. Strout served in the Navy.

On June 14, 1944 he married Ruth “Arlene” Morrison.

From 1941 until his retirement in 1986 Mr. Strout worked first as an apprentice in the machine shop and then in the pipe shop. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending swimming meets with his granddaughters.

He was a member of St.Philip’s Episcopal Church, the American Legion, VFW and the Bath Masonic Lodge.

Surviving besides his wife of Wiscasset are a son and daughter-in-law Donald and Linda Strout of Edgecomb. Three sisters Patricia Hayward of Bath, Thelma Alexander of Sebasco Estates and Pauline Coffin of Boothbay Harbor, three grandchildren Jennifer Strout, Sarah Strout and Emily Strout.

He was predeceased by three brothers Clinton, Robert and Edward Strout and a sister Frances Lilly.

Memorial service held at 3 p.m. Sat. from St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Hodge St. Wiscasset. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church PO box 316 Wiscasset, Me. Arrangements are by May & Daigle Funeral Home 40 Federal St. Wiscasset.

Donald K. Strout
2000-05-12

Donald K. Strout, 72, a 1945 graduate of Pennell Institute, died Monday, April 10, in a Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, hospital.

Born September 24, 1927, in Portland, ME, to Munson and Susie McDuffie Strout, he was a veteran of the United States Navy, and a member of VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn F. Strout, of Hot Springs Village; one son and daughter-in-law, D. Wayne and Carol Strout, of Dover, PA; one daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and Stanley Thompson, of Ovilla, TX; one brother, Arnold R. Strout, of Myrtle Beach, SC; his mother-in-law, Bernice Ferguson, of Hot Springs Village; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by one brother.

Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta, Maine.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Village United Methodist Church.
