Gerald V. Savage
2001-03-22

Gerald V. Savage, 76, of Wiscasset, formerly of West Bath, died Saturday, March 17 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Chester, he was a son of Verner E. and Leona Davis Savage. He attended Portland schools and married Helen I. Snow on August 29, 1942. He entered the Navy during World War II.

In the late 1940s he and his wife moved to Stetson, where he worked on his farm. In 1963 they moved to Bath, where he worked for Clappison Oil as an oil burner serviceman. In 1969 he began working at Bath Iron Works as a security guard, retiring in 1986.

Mr. Savage was a member of the American Legion in Bath and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed coaching baseball and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Helen I. Savage of Wiscasset; a son, James E. of Wiscasset; a daughter, Diane L. Savage of Wiscasset; a half-brother, Laurice Savage of Stetson; five grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 21 at the Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath with the Rev. Stephen Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hill cemetery in West Bath.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland.

James M. Savory
2001-04-05

James Marshal "Jim" Savory, 71, of Boothbay Harbor died Monday, March 26 after a brief illness.

He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on February 9, 1930, the son of Carlyle and Sarah Savory.

He joined the United States Army in 1945 and continued his military career with the U.S. Marines from 1950 to 1952, and with the Marine Reserves from 1952 to 1960.

Early in his life, Mr. Savory enjoyed a variety of occupations, including a railroad worker and salesperson. In the early 1960s, he returned to the Boothbay region with his wife, Georgia, and daughter, Jaime. Upon his return, he was employed by Fisherman's Wharf Inn for the next 34 years. During that time, he was also co-owner of Hilltop Guest House.

Mr. Savory was a Past Master and Chaplain of Seaside Lodge #144, A.F. & A.M. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of the Blue Knights motorcycle club. He enjoyed many years of traveling and camping with his wife and family.

One of Jim's greatest pleasures was entertaining his many nieces and nephews with his special magic tricks and impersonations. He also had a great appreciation for the arts, including old movies, paintings and especially singing.

His wife, Georgia, died in 1995.

He is survived by his daughter, Jaime Mansfield and her husband, Tom; grandchildren, Joshua and Chelsea Mansfield, all of Trevett; an aunt, Mary Katherine Bates of Oklahoma; a cousin, David Bates of Maryland, sister-in-law, Virginia Brewer of Boothbay Harbor; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 30 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor. A Masonic service will be held at the end of the memorial service, conducted by Seaside Lodge #144, A.F. & A.M.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Edith M. Sawyer
2001-05-03

Edith M. (Sproul) Sawyer, 91, formerly of Saugus, Mass. and Southport Island, died Sunday, April 29 in Epoch Senior Healthcare of Northboro, Massachusetts.

Born in Putnam, Conn., the daughter of Alvin F. and Hattie (Chase) Sproul, she was a lifelong resident of Saugus. Mrs. Sawyer was a director of food management for Saugus public schools for 20 years, and owned Sawyers Catering.

She was a charter member of Saugus Garden Club, member of Saugus Historical Society, and a lifelong member of Cliftondale Congregational Church of Saugus.

Her husband, Carl A. Sawyer died in 1952 and a daughter, Nancy A. Bertram died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Carl A. Sawyer Jr. of Northboro and Thomas S. Sawyer of Sheepscot; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 5 at 2 p.m. in Cliftondale Congregational Church, 50 Essex Street. Burial is private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Cliftondale Congregational Church.

Marjorie L. Scally
2001-09-13

Marjorie Lois (Hall) Scally, 89, of Kennebunkport, wife of the late William A. Scally Jr., died Wednesday, September 5.

She was born October 13, 1911 in Simsbury, Conn., daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary Ellen (McBride) Hall and had lived in Brookfield prior to moving to Maine in 1969.

Mrs. Scally was a graduate of Simsbury Grammar School and Simsbury High School, and received her permanent Teaching Certificate from New Britain Normal School, now Central Connecticut University. She also studied at Sacred Heart University and the University of Southern Maine.

Mrs. Scally accompanied her husband to many countries outside of the United States. While in Indonesia and Korea, she studied the language and culture of both countries, extensively. She taught both professionally and voluntarily in both Indonesia and Korea, as well as in Connecticut and Maine.

She was active in both the Methodist church, when young, and Catholic church as an adult. She was a parish council member and taught CCD both overseas and in the United States. She was currently a communicant of St. Martha's Catholic Church in Kennebunkport.

Most of all she loved her job being a mother to her five children, William A. Scally III, Mary Ellen Scally Rybczyk, Robert Hall Scally, Bruce Edward Scally of Wiscasset, and Mark Christopher Scally; grandmother to her nine grandchildren, and great-grandmother to her new great-granddaughter.

She also leaves her sister, Esther Godfrey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral was held Monday, September 10 at the Vincent Funeral Home, Simsbury, Conn., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Simsbury. Burial was in Simsbury Cemetery.

Frances R. Schmidt
2001-11-29

Frances Rydell Schmidt, 83, of West Boothbay Harbor, died Tuesday, November 13 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, Vermont.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn. on September 21, 1918, she was the daughter of Carl and Marion (Rogers) Rising.

Mrs. Schmidt received her early education in Holyoke, Mass. and graduated from Holyoke High School, class of 1936. She received her degree as a dietitian from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., class of 1938.

On October 19, 1942, she married Herbert P. Schmidt in Holyoke, Mass. Mr. Schmidt died on February 7, 1994.

During World War II, she worked as a civilian employee at Westover Army Air Force Base in the motor pool.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1979.

Mrs. Schmidt had been a member of the Water of Life Lutheran Church, a member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club, and enjoyed arts and crafts.

Surviving is a daughter, Marianne Wildgust of Brandon, Vt.; one son, Carl Schmidt of Boothbay; and three grandchildren.

A private service will be held in Brandon, Vt.

Elsie J. Seigars
2001-04-12

Elsie Janet Seigars, 56, of Alna, died of cancer Thursday, April 5, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

A daughter of Carol Hanson Boudin and Helen Marie Boudin of Wiscasset, she attended Wiscasset schools and earned her general equivalency diploma taking night courses.

She was born in the residence of the old county jail on Federal Street, Wiscasset. The midwife, Elsie Blagdon worked as a jail keeper there. Elsie was named after her.

On June 11, 1960, she married John Stephen Seigars Sr. of Alna. She lived in East Hartford, Conn. and then in Holland, Mass., before returning to Alna in 1979.

Mrs. Seigars worked at Big Al's Super Value in Wiscasset after working at Common Sense Design in Nobleboro.

Surviving are her husband, John Stephen Seigars Sr. of Alna; two sons, John S. Seigars Jr. and William J. Seigars, both of Alna; three daughters, Cynthia J. Allen of Benton, Kathleen H. Trussel of Alna and Patricia M. Jacques of Allen, Texas; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Boudin of Wiscasset, Kenneth Boudin of Waterville and Tom Boudin of Edgecomb; four sisters, Mary Seigars of Wiscasset, Evelyn Moeller of Bowdoinham, Phyllis Soule of Wiscasset and Christine Colwell of Vermont.

A memorial service was held Monday, April 9 at Kincer Funeral Home with Pastor David Colwell officiating.

George W. Shaw
2001-02-15

George W. Shaw, 69, of Weeks Mills and a summer resident of Murray Hill Road in East Boothbay, died Sunday, February 11 at his home, with his family at his side, following a courageous battle against cancer.

Born in Augusta, July 18, 1931, he was the son of George W. and Nellie (Morrison) Shaw.

A Korean War Navy veteran, Mr. Shaw was employed for 25 years at Westinghouse and most recently was president of Structurally Sound Builders of Weeks Mills.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #4, in Gardiner, Weeks Mills Fire Department, and past president and member of the Boosters of Erskine Eagles Club.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Shirley Robinson Shaw of Weeks Mills; two sons, Kenneth D. and his wife, Michelle Shaw, of North Vassalboro, and George "Webb" W. III and his wife, Jodi Shaw, of Weeks Mills; two daughters, Karen L. Dittman and her husband, Richard Jr., of Ellsworth, and Karol E. Skarmos of Carrabassett Valley; one brother, Carl and his wife, Alice Mason, of Weeks Mills; two sisters, Virginia Perkins of Gardiner, and Betty Gifford of Augusta; two granddaughters, Danielle Tibbs of Carrabassett Valley, and Kristy Prentis of Ellsworth; one grandson, AJ Shaw of Weeks Mills; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral service was held at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner on Tuesday, February 13. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot at the Oak Grove cemetery in Gardiner.

Roy A. Shea
2001-06-14

Roy A. Shea, 63, of Fairfield, died Thursday, June 7 at a Waterville hospital.

Born in Damariscotta on February 20, 1938, he was the son of the late Donald and Lucille (Quinnam) Shea. He attended schools in Wiscasset, graduating from Wiscasset High School, Class of 1956.

In 1956, he entered the United States Navy and served as a navigator for DC-3 airplanes. In 1962, he was honorably discharged. While in the service, he attended University of California and the University of Hawaii.

On August 16, 1969, he married Patricia A. King.

For over 30 years, he was employed as a trouble-shooter for the New England Telephone Company, and later NYNEX, retiring in 1992.

Mr. Shea was a volunteer at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Fairfield. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards, working on his model railroad, researching genealogy, and attending Lawrence High School basketball games, especially when his son Mark played.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Patricia A. Shea of Fairfield; one son, Mark Shea and wife Rebecca of Wade; one granddaughter, Hope Shea of Wade; three brothers, Dean Shea and wife Sandra, Charles Shea and wife Faye, all of Wiscasset, and Harry Shea and wife Yang of Springfield, Missouri; one sister, Judy Flanagan and husband Tim of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were Friday, June 8 at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield. A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 9 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Fairfield, with the Rev. Marcel Dumouli, celebrant. Burial followed at Saint Francis cemetery in Waterville.

Those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Div., Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Abraham C. Skiff
2001-07-05

Abraham C. Skiff, infant son of James G. and Linda R. Rosenberry Skiff of Newcastle, died Friday, June 15 shortly after birth at a Portland hospital. Survivors include his parents; a twin brother, Gardner Jai Skiff; a sister, Margaret Rose Skiff, all of Newcastle; maternal grandparents, William and Marion Rosenberry of Westchester, Penn.; paternal grandparents, Ann Brown of Northwood, N.H. and Mr. and Mrs. William H. Skiff of Bar Harbor; and maternal great-grandmother, Marion Stang of Media, Penn. If desired, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Winter Street, Augusta, ME 04330. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home of Portland.
