Carroll E. Skillin
2001-01-18

Carroll E. Skillin, 59, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, January 13, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

He was born in Damariscotta on December 16, 1941, the son of Elwyn F. and Jessie (Carlisle) Skillin.

He attended Woolwich and Wiscasset Schools. Carroll hurt his spine as a child and had been disabled since. He helped his mother and father operate Skillin's Roadside Garden Stand in Wiscasset.

He enjoyed stock car racing and traveled throughout the state attending races. Carroll also loved his daily routine of having coffee at McDonald's in Bath with several of his friends. He also liked watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

He was predeceased by his mother, Jesse Skillin on September 12, 2000, and by his father, Elwyn E. Skillin, on June 17, 1988.

He is survived by three uncles, Myron Skillin and his wife Alma of Wiscasset with whom Carroll has resided for the past 10 years, Erwin Skillin of Wiscasset, and Orman Skillin of Whitefield; one aunt, Grace Smith of Woolwich; and several cousins.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home where a funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 17, with the Rev. Floyd Carter officiating. Burial will be held at Forrest Hill cemetery in Dresden in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Maine Chapter, PO Box 486, Westbrook, ME 04098 or to the Ronald McDonald Foundation.

Ken Skilling
2001-04-20

A man who brightened the Town with his presence passed away suddenly last Friday.

Kenneth S. Skilling, 70, died of a heart attack.

He was born September 8, 1930, in Gray, the son of John and Catherine Cobb Skilling.

A lifelong resident of Gray, he graduated from Pennell Institute in 1949.

He worked for the local State Highway Department for five years, then for Commercial Welding Company for 44 years. He also worked at the Hinkley Paper Mill and several mills in the Hinkley area.

During his retirement, he became a bus driver for the Gray-New Gloucester School District.

He served in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at Fort Churchill. He was an active member of many community groups. He was a communicant of the First Congregational Church of Gray. He was a member of the Pennell Alumni Association, Union Local 4, American Legion Post No. 86, Presumpscot Masonic Lodge No. 127 AF&AM, and Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston. He was a former president of the Masonic Lodge in Lake Region. He was also a member of the Gray SnoWolves Snowmobile Club and the Arnold Trail Club.

He enjoyed his wife and family, being outside, gardening and simply talking with everyone, as well as his camps at Little Sebago Lake and Eustis, NASCAR and local racing, trips to Aruba, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing.

He is predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Beatrice Rolfe Skilling, whom he married on June 3, 1950; she died April 5, 1989.

Surviving are his wife, Kristine Riff Skilling, whom he married February 19, 1994; three daughters, Cindy Trinward and Kim Shelley, both of Gray, and Brenda Emerson, of Windham; one son, Kenneth, Jr., of Gray; his stepchildren, Jennifer Bergquist and Jody Valliere, of Gray, John Valliere and Janet Valliere, of Berlin, NH; eight grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert, Carlton and Robert, all of Gray; and one sister, Yvonne Wilkinson, of Gray.

A funeral service was held last Tuesday, April 17, at the First Congregational Church of Gray, Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gray Fire Department, PO Box 258, Gray, Maine 04039. It was Ken's hope that the Department would be able to purchase a thermal-imaging camera.

John Smalls
2001-12-20

John (Jack) Smalls, 94, of Cooper City, Florida and Boothbay Harbor, beloved husband of Jean, died on December 3, 2001.

Jane M. Smith
2001-03-15

Jane McGrath Smith, 68, of Wiscasset, died Friday, March 9 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Gardiner on May 28, 1932, she was the daughter of James Gerard and Emily Grace (Wentworth) McGrath. She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1950.

On February 26, 1955 she married Herald M. Smith. She was employed at the Lincoln County Historical Society in Wiscasset and the Wiscasset Library. She later was employed at Macurda Insurance Agency in Wiscasset. On January 3, 1970 the town of Wiscasset employed her as secretary to the selectmen retiring on May 31, 1996.

She was past president and an active member of the Wiscasset Alumni Association, member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wiscasset and the Wiscasset Female Charitable Society.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed spending time with her family and granddaughter. She also collected dishes, did needlework, painted and loved her flower garden. She was also known for loving people.

Survivors include her husband, Herald M. Smith of Wiscasset; two sons, John W. Smith of Alna and Stephen G. Smith of Dresden; three stepdaughters, Sharon Smith of Pennsylvania, Ruth Ann Spies of Arizona and Betty Jean Stoner of Virginia; one granddaughter, Sarah E. Glasser of Wright, Wyoming; eight step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one cousin, Eleanor Ketchum of Embden; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were Wednesday March 14 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset Fellowship Hall. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Robert L. Smith
2001-06-21

Robert L. Smith, a long-time resident of Wiscasset, died Thursday, June 14 at the home of his daughter, Mary E. Cowley, in Groveland, Mass.

In 1930 he graduated from Wiscasset Academy. He worked at the Bath Iron Works shipyard through World War II, and the Korean War, retiring in 1967.

Mr. Smith was an avid sports fan who closely followed the Red Sox and Celtics.

He was predeceased by his wife, Madeline Brown Smith in 1998.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary E. Cowley and her husband Roger E. Cowley; two granddaughters, Heather Gordon of Rhode Island, and Roxanne Barnett of New Hampshire; and four grandchildren.

His remains will be interned in the Greenlawn cemetery with only his immediate family present.

Dorothy Y. Sonia
2002-05-30

Dorothy Y. Sonia, 88, of Old Ferry Road, died Tuesday, May 28 at Winship Green Nursing Center.

Born in Alna on February 25, 1914 she was the daughter of Arthur M. and Ruby A. (Hall) Young.

She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1932. She married Leon P. Sonia and they resided in Wiscasset. They later moved to Bath where they owned and operated Sonia's Home Bakery on Front Street for many years. She was employed as a nurse's aid at Thayer Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1979. She resided with her son Leon from 1997 until this year.

Mrs. Sonia enjoyed socializing and going for rides in her car.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leon P. Sonia, in 1980 and one son, Arthur "Mickey" Sonia, in 1996.

Survivors include one son, Leon "Joe" Sonia and his wife Christine C. of Wiscasset; four grandchildren, Matthew Sonia, Anne Glidden, Jeff Sonia, and Jim Sonia; and six great-grandchildren.

At her request there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite #300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

James W. Smyth
2001-10-11

James W. "Smitty" Smith, 81, of Enfield, died Sunday, October 7 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

He was born in Westbrook November 29, 1919 to James Smyth and Anne Morrow, who immigrated from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Mr. Smith attended school in Westbrook and was head machinist at S.D. Warren in Westbrook for 40 years. He also enjoyed operating his own machine shop at home in Westbrook.

Mr. Smyth was a member of the heavy mortar section of Co D. 242 Inf. Reg., 42 Division. Battles and campaigns were in Rhineland, Central Europe. For 13 months he served in France, Germany and Austria and was in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, victory medal, and combat gunner infantry badge.

Since his retirement 20 years ago he has wintered at Dundee, Florida and spent his summers at Cole Stream, Enfield.

Mr. Smyth loved fishing, hunting, stock car racing and music. He enjoyed his many friends from Canada, Maine and Florida and spent hours swapping stories of life-long situations.

Survivors include a brother, Everett Smyth and his wife Alma of Westport; soul mate and constant helpmate and companion, Hazel B. Morrison of Enfield and Dundee, Florida; one son, James Smyth and his wife Sandy of Boothbay; two daughters, Patricia Sczymecki of Arundal, and Dorcas Morgan of Boothbay Harbor; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchild-ren; and special friends and helpmates.

At. Mr. Smyth's request, he will be cremated with no funeral and no visiting hours. Graveside committal services will be held with full military honors at the Smyth family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the relief organizations collecting for the benefit of the families of the firemen and policemen lost in the September 11 nightmare on his and our great nation. Arrangements are with Clay Funeral Home of Lincoln.

Leo W. Spillane
2001-06-14

Leo William Spillane Sr., 72, of Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, June 10 at Glenridge Nursing Home in Augusta.

Born on January 22, 1929 in Dorchester, Mass., he was the son of Leo M. and Anne Doolan Spillane. He summered in Boothbay Harbor since he was a young boy and moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1989.

He married Claire O'Rourke who was his wife for 42 years.

Mr. Spillane was a Technical Supervisor at MIT and Draper Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass. for most of his working life. During the 1960s he was a member of the technical team that developed and tested the guidance systems for the Apollo missions. He enjoyed and took pride in his work and his contributions to the advancement to technology.

Mr. Spillane enjoyed the time he spent on Linekin Bay, fishing, boating, and just being close to the sea.

Survivors include three sons, Robert M. Spillane of Wiscasset, Leo W. Spillane Jr. of Boothbay Harbor, and Paul Spillane of Revere, Mass.; one daughter, Barbara Spillane of Allston, Mass.; three grandchildren, Lisa Spillane and Michael Spillane, both of Wiscasset, and Brooke Spillane of Revere, Mass..

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, June 12 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 13 at 6 p.m. at Wall Point, Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Raymond Picard officiating.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Elaine N. Spitzner
2001-08-23

Elaine Nicholson Spitzner died Saturday, August 18 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born July 1, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Archie D. and Jessica Nicholson Briskey.

A graduate of Upper Darby Sr. High School, she worked for various companies as an executive secretary including AAA in Philadelphia, and Morton & Associates, CPA, and as a receptionist for Smith, Barney and Shearson.

She liked to travel and to meet new people. She liked to read, do needlework and enjoyed collecting antiques and memorabilia.

Mrs. Spitzner was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post #36, the Boothbay Region Historical Society, Coastal Club, and Women's Fellowship of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

She was predeceased by her husband Ernest F. Spitzner.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra E. and her husband Donald G. Paxson of Boothbay Harbor; four grandchildren, Wade and Victoria Paxson, both of Boothbay Harbor, Donald Paxson Jr. of Glenmoore, Penn., and Lesley Pascocello of Chester Springs, Penn.; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Tanner Pascocello, both of Chester Springs, Penn.

A memorial service is being planned at a later date to be announced by the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be sent in her memory to The American Cancer Society, Damariscotta Strides, c/o Carol Wise, P.O. Box 106, Walpole, ME 04573.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
