Robert N. Spofford Jr.
2001-11-29

Robert N. Spofford Jr., 77, of Boothbay, died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

Born in Medford, Mass., he was a son of Doris Bertram and Robert N. Spofford Sr. He attended the Mount Hermon School, Springfield College and the Oxford School of Business.

Mr. Spofford served as a torpedo man on PT224 during World War II and received many combat awards.

He was the owner of Robert Spofford Real Estate in Wenham, Mass. While in Wenham, he served on the town's planning board and its board of selectmen.

He was commodore of the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club, captain of the Wenham Fire Department and a district chief instructor of the Massachusetts Fire Academy, New England Association of Fire Instructors.

While in Maine, he served with the Lincoln County Fire Chiefs Association and the Maine State Fire Chiefs Association, and was the first assistant chief of the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department. He retired from the Boothbay Fire Department.

His hobbies included sailing, youth sports and antiques.

Surviving are his wife, Frances N. Spofford of Boothbay; two daughters, Susan Nearly of Palm City, Fla., and Elizabeth Spofford of Annisquam, Mass.; four sons, Robert III of Monkton, Vt., Josh of Essex, Mass., Thomas of Chico, Calif., and Andrew of Newburyport, Mass.; five stepchildren, Janet Chernick of Shrewsbury, Mass., Nancy Yorgy of Beverly, Mass., Richard Freeman of Wenham, Mass., and Diane Rubchinuk and Cheryl Dermirdogen of Danvers, Mass.; a brother, Parker L. Spofford of Waldoboro; eight grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

A gathering for his family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 2 at the American Legion Hall in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Cancer Action Network - PANCAN, P.O. Box 4809, Palos Verdes, CA 90274.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Leona K. Stetson
2001-05-03

A committal service for Leona K. Stetson, 88, who died December 30, 2000 will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9 at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Arrangements are made by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Pauline A. Stevens
2001-04-26

Pauline A. Stevens, 93, of Wiscasset, died at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta on Monday, April 23, after a long illness.

Born in New Harbor, she was the daughter of Emily Barstow Brackett and Charles Blaisdell Brackett.

She worked for many years at Riverview Restaurant in Damariscotta, and Gamage's Store in South Bristol.

Mrs. Stevens lived in Boothbay Harbor for 44 years before moving to Wiscasset.

She was predeceased in 1964 by a son, Merle.

Survivors include a son, Arthur of Wiscasset; one daughter, Ellen Schroeder of Westport; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-granddaughter.

At her request there will be no funeral. Arrangements were by Direct Cremation of Belfast.

Memorial donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 303, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Howard D. Stevenson
2001-11-29

Howard D. Stevenson, 94, of Augusta, died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Maine General Medical Center Augusta Division, after a brief illness.

Born in Somerville, Mass., on September 11, 1907 he was the son of William R. and Lilla (Spence) Stevenson.

Mr. Stevenson attended school in Medford and Everett, Mass., and received diplomas from Professor Herrick's School of Civil Service and Purdue University on Pest Control Technology.

He founded Modern Pest Services, Inc. of Augusta and operated the firm from 1945 until 1973.

Mr. Stevenson was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Florida and was a lifetime honorary member of the National Pest Management Association. In 1999 he was given the Bartlett W. Eldridge Award, the highest recognition the New England Pest Management Association can bestow a member. He was an avid motorcyclist and yachtsman and had been a member of the Wawanock Power Squadron. He also enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Rangeley.

He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jennie A. (Maskewich) Stevenson of Augusta; a son, Richard E. Stevenson and his wife Bonnie of Boothbay; two daughters, Carol A. MacDowell of Chelsea and Joan M. Thomas and her husband Dr. Richard Thomas of Bangor; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grand-children.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 27 at the Plummer Funeral Home in Augusta with Rev. Michael Gendreau, pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester. Those who desire may make donations to: Sweetser Children's Home, 50 Moody St., Saco, ME, 04072-0892.

Jeanette G. Stickney
2001-10-11

Jeanette G. (Chickering) Stickney, 95, of Lancaster, Mass., died Friday, October 5 in Oakdale Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center in West Boylston, Mass.

Born in Fitchburg, she was the daughter of Charles B. and Harriet (Tufts) Chickering.

For 28 years she was a resident of Boothbay Harbor before returning to Lancaster, Mass. in July 2000.

She was an avid reader, gardener and enjoyed doing needlepoint.

Her husband, Josiah Stickney died in 1970.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte S. Follansbee of Lancaster; three grandsons, Robert Follansbee of Belmont, Mass., Peter Follansbee of Alexandria, Va., and Seth Follansbee of Lancaster, Mass.; a niece, Sally Richardson of New York, N.Y.; a cousin, Elizabeth Max of Needham, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Richardson of Kennebunkport.

A private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Eastwood cemetery in Lancaster. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, Inc., 304 Church Street, Clinton, Mass.

Edwin L. Strout
2001-01-05

Edwin L. Strout, who lived in Gray most of his life, died unexpectedly at his home on December 30.

He was born in Poland, a son of Edwin R. and Beatrice W. Strout, and attended Pennell Institute. He married Judith Butler on June 11, 1953, and worked for Gray Electronics for more than 30 years.

He was a volunteer fireman and constable for the Town of Gray.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Sylvia Pawlowski, of South Portland; two sons, Jeffrey, of Poland, and Timothy, of Springvale; two daughters, Linda Gay, of Sanford, and Julie Mason, of Turner; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held last Tuesday, with Pastor Darwin Vail officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

HALLOWELL

Ralph L. Bean - age 78 of Mayflower Rd., died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, October 14, 2000. He was born in Auburn on July 30, 1932 the son of Paul L. and Delia (Webster) Bean.

Mr. Bean was a graduate of Edward Little High School, class of 1940, attended New Hampton Prep School in 1941 and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maine - Orono in 1948.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 106th Infantry during WW II until taken prisoner in the Battle of the Bulge. He received his infantry badge and three battle stars while in combat in the European Theatre.

Mr. Bean had been employed by Central Maine Power for 38 years. He served in various capacities beginning as a survey chief of party and ending as Vice-president of Engineering. He worked on more than a dozen projects for CMP involving storage reservoirs, hydroelectric and thermal generating plants. Mr. Bean represented CMP on the planning arm of NEPOOL called NEPLAN serving one years as its Chairman. He also served as Director and Chairman on SAD #16 school board, was a covenant member and former trustee and chairman of Old South Congregational Church since 1951. Mr. Bean served on diaconate and was administrator of the Restoration Fund Drive.

He was a trustee and past Chairman of the Hallowell Water District, a trustee of Hubbard Free Library, a past representative of Hallowell on the Intercommunity Truck Line, a member and past President of the Maine Association of Engineers, member of Maine Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, former Director and Chairman of the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross, former board member and Chairman of the Maine Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, served on the Engineering Industrial Advisory Board of Maine Maritime Academy and was awarded the Outstanding Civil Engineer in Maine in 1986 by the Maine Chapter of FASCE.

Some of his hobbies include fishing, traveling and stamp collecting.

Mr. Bean was pre-deceased by his parents, his first wife, Mary Grace Tibbets and a brother, Paul W. Bean.

He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Cynthia (Olmsted) Bean of Hallowell; two sons, Paul Bean of Manchester and David Bean of Portland; a daughter, Carolyn Stiff of Richmond, VA; a step-son, Alex Olmsted of Manchester; a step-daughter, Kathy Damren of Winthrop, five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial service was held on Friday, October 20th at 1 PM at Old South Congregational Church, Hallowell.

Burial was in the Bean family lot at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Auburn.

AUGUSTA

Christine A. Beaudoin – age 82 of Cony Road, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at the Maine Veterans Home after a long illness. She was born in Augusta on July 31, 1918 the daughter of Joseph E. and Marie Anna (Quirion) Veilleux.

She was a communicant of St. Andrews Catholic Church.

Mrs. Beaudoin was a homemaker for most of her life. Her devotion to her family was an outward sign of her great love for them. There were many birthday cakes as well as custom made wedding cakes that she gladly created. Christine enjoyed hosting large family gatherings and at Christmas time you could depend on her “tourtiere” pies and divinity fudge.

Her husband, Roland T. Beaudoin, died in August of 2000. She was also pre-deceased by a son, Daniel Beaudoin.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita Beaulieu of West Gardiner; four sons, John Beaudoin and his wife Peggy and Michael Beaudoin and his wife Mary all of Chelsea, David Beaudoin and his wife Ovelyn of Orlando, FL and Donald Beaudoin and his wife Elaine of Vassalboro; two brothers, Joseph A. Veilleux and Aime Veilleux both of Augusta; two sisters, Gilda Allen and Theresa Bean both of Augusta; sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9 AM at St. Andrews Catholic Church, St. Andrews Street, Augusta. Burial will follow at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

Those who desire, may make donations in her memory to the General Fund at Maine Veterans Home, R.R. 7 Box 901, Cony Road, Augusta, Maine -04330

AUGUSTA

Clement Belanger - age 78 of Townsend St., died Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Caribou on September 15, 1922 the son of Vital and Alma (Thibodeau) Belanger.

Mr. Belanger attended Caribou schools and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WW II.

Mr. Belanger had been employed by the State of Maine at the Augusta Mental Health Institute for over 20 years.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 30 years, Mary M. (Veilleux) Belanger and 10 brothers and sisters.

Mr. Belanger is survived by a daughter, Brenda Trussell and her fiancée Glenn Daiute of Jefferson; two sisters, Dina Lessard of Augusta and Lucille Soucie of New Britain, CT; three grandchildren, Tim, Jeremy and Nicole; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held on Friday, December 22nd at 12 noon in the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

Burial will follow in the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Rita Y. Belanger - age 68 of Water Street, died unex­pectedly on Mon­day, Dec. 5, 2000 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Division. She was born in Augusta on March 20, 1932, the daughter of Albenie and Lauretta (Lessard) Pare.

Mrs. Belanger was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She had been employed at Augusta General Hospital for over 22 years in the Laundry Department and the Storeroom.

She was pre-deceased by three sisters, Jeanne D'arc Quirion, Mary Anne Fortin, Ida Bowden, also a brother Adjutor Pare and a half sister Rose Deschene.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Wallace Belanger of Au­gusta; a son, Leo Belanger and his wife Marie of Augusta; six sisters, Yvette Austin, Rolande Poirier, Laurette Rowe, Germaine Belanger and Rose Pare all of Au­gusta and Theresa Whitley of South Paris; a step-sister, Clorinthe Pare of Canada; also surviving are four grandchildren, Amanda Cleary, Nathan Cleary, Michael Severance and Briana Belanger and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit today from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be cele­brated Thursday, December 7th at 9 AM at St Augustine Catholic Church.

Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta.
