MANCHESTER

Fred Lester Grant – age 63, beloved husband of Donna (Brennan) Grant, passed away April 10, 2001 at their home on the Scribner Hill Road. Fred was born in Augusta, Maine on December 8, 1937 the son of Fred Lester Grant and Dorothy (Hayes) Grant.

After graduating from Cony High School in 1956, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he served on the U.S.C.G. cutter Acushnet, which was a search & rescue vessel stationed in Portland, Maine.

In 1958, Fred married Donna Brennan and soon began working for Bell Telephone Company. He was a cable splicer, installer and construction supervisor until his “retirement” in 1991. After his “retirement” in 1992, he laid fiber optic cable from Maine to Florida.

He was known as Uncle Freddie, Pappy, Dad and Fred. He was a super duper carpenter and ingenious Maine fix-it man.

Fred was very active in community affairs. He was past president of the Manchester Lions Club and originator of the Manchester Lions Home & Garden Show. He was active in planning and building the Lions Club and adjacent ball fields. He coached in the Augusta Farm League and was very active in the beginning of the Maranacook Youth league in softball and baseball. Fred volunteered for the Special Winter Olympics. He owned, raised and trained many Standard bred horses. He loved fishing, harness racing, old Fords, baseball (especially the Yankees), and hockey (especially the Havs)(?). He served as a selectman in the town of Manchester and a past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Surviving is his wife of 42 years, Donna (Brennan) Grant of Manchester; three daughters, Kathleen Ayers and her husband Marshall Ayers of Manchester, Maureen (Rooney) Whitman and her husband Wayne of Readfield, and Amy Ann Grant and Brett Trefthen of North New Portland; a brother, Robert Grant of Gardiner; a sister, Carol Ann Ballard and her husband Ken Ballard of Manchester; five grandchildren (and one on the way); Don and Andy Ayers of Manchester, Laura, Jacob and Samuel Whitman of Readfield; nephews, Todd, Jeff and Jason Ballard and Ryan Chamberland; one niece, Kim Chamberland; sister-in-law Eileen Chamberland and brother-in-law Carl Chamberland. Pappy will be sadly missed by his shadow, Sam.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Thursday, April 12th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A memorial service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held 2:00 PM Friday at North Manchester Meeting House Church, Scribner Hill Road, Manchester. Burial of the urn will be in Manchester Forks cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Manchester Meeting House Church Relief Fund, c/o Arlene Lebel, 275 Prescott Road, Manchester, ME 04351.

HALLOWELL

Ida J. Gregoire – age 76 of Walters Boarding Home on Middle St., and formerly of the Outlet Rd., died Monday, March 12, 2001 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born in Augusta on July 30, 1924 the daughter of Leon Charles and Denise Olivine (Gosselin) Simard.

Mrs. Gregoire had been employed by Hallowell Shoe Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Ida loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's school functions and sporting events. Known as Memere to everyone, she spent many hours volunteering at the Little Red Hen Day Care. Her kindness, good heart and sense of humor were always evident, even as her health failed. Her last years were made much more comfortable and enjoyable by her friends, the residents and staff at Walter's Boarding Home in Hallowell.

Mrs. Gregoire was pre-deceased by her husband, Lionel O. Gregoire in 1993.

She is survived by a son, Roger L. Gregoire and his wife, Dawna of South Gardiner; a daughter, Cecile Gregoire of Hallowell; a brother, Gerard C. Simard of Augusta; a sister, Theresa Thibault of Randolph; two grandchildren, Stefany and Joshua Gregoire; an aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallowell.

Burial will be in Hallowell cemetery in the spring.

AUGUSTA

Fernand E. Jacques - age 75 of Townsend Rd., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at his home after a long illness. He was born in St. Everest, Canada on July 26, 1925 the son of Philip and Lucia (Tanguay) Jacques.

Mr. Jacques was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and had been a member of the Augusta Eagles Club, Aerie 3137.

He had been employed by Bates Mfg. Co. - Edwards Division for 29 years.

Mr. Jacques is survived by his wife of 26 years Constance (McLaughlin) Jacques of Augusta; a sister, Alfreda Butler of East Winthrop; thee step-sons, Paul Maheux and his wife Vicki of Gardiner, Mark Maheux of Meriden, CT and Michael Maheux and his wife Megan of Augusta; two step-daughters, Donna Boucher and her husband John of Bristol, CT and Debi Fortin and her husband Larry of Farmington; 11 step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 19th at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will be held later this spring in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

LISBON FALLS
Marie Margaret (Conlon) Karkos - age 85, of 13 Free St., died Monday March 12, 2001 at St. Marguerite d' Youville Pavilion, Lewiston after a brief illness. She was born in Bronx, New York on November 17, 1915 the daughter of John Joseph and Mary Frances Conors Conlon.
Mrs. Karkos moved to Allendale, New Jersey in 1923. She received her elementary and High School education at St. Lukes Roman Catholic School in Hohokus, New Jersey and graduated in 1933. Mrs. Karkos worked in New York City for 4 years as a floor manager for T.W. Woolworth.
In 1937 she entered St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1940. Mrs. Karkos worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey in the central supply dept. for 2 years and later transferred to the female ward medical division were she was the head nurse for medicine and surgery.
She married Joseph B. Karkos on June 22, 1946 at St. Lukes Roman Catholic Church in Hohokus, New Jersey. Mr. Karkos died Feb. 13, 1986. They made their home in Lisbon Falls, Maine where she worked as a private duty nurse and raised her family.
Mrs. Karkos was a member of St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Lisbon Falls now the Holy Trinity Parish. Marie was a very active president in the Rosary Society for a number of years. She taught catechism for 12 years. A charter member of the Daughters of Isabella St. Francis Xavier Circle # 743, she accumalated 50 years of service before the group disbanded. Marie was a member of the Marion Movement of Priests. Marie enjoyed many trips to Quebec with her family, summers at camp, gardening, mushrooming and praying many rosaries daily.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by an infant son Nicholas Karkos in 1953, her father who died in 1948 and mother who died in 1951, 2 brothers John J. Conlon who died In 1988 and Thomas E. Conlon who died in 1992.
Mrs. Karkos is survived by 3 daughters Mary Joe A. Harmon and her husband Richard, Patricia A. Austin and her husband Peter, and Theresa Karkos all of Lisbon Falls; 5 grandchildren Richard J. Harmon and his wife Amy of Gardiner, Jennifer J. Bussiere and her husband Robert, Patrick A. Austin and his wife Amy, Payton A. Austin all of Lisbon Falls and Peter A.(Tony) Austin and his wife Traci of Lisbon. 8 great-grandchildren Ashley Marie Harmon, Mitchell, Monica and Nickolas Austin, Jacob and Vanessa Bussiere, Ryley and Noah Austin. Several nieces nephews and cousins.
Visiting Hours will be held Friday from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. at Amesbury-White Funeral Home 39 Washington Ave. Gardiner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday March 17, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Parish, Frost Hill Ave. Lisbon Falls with Father Lionel G. Chouinard officiating. Spring burial will be at St. Cyrils and Methodius Church Cemetery, Lisbon Falls.
Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Parish Building Fund, c/o Holy Trinity Parish, 51 Main Street, Lisbon Falls, Maine 04252. Arrangements under the care of Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner.

SOLON

Rev. Dennis J. Knox, Sr. – age 45 of South Solon Rd., and formerly of Libby Hill Rd., Gardiner and Anson, ME, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Thayer Unit, Waterville after a long illness. He was born in Rockland on August 23, 1955 the son of Maynard Knox, Sr. and Elizabeth (Morse) Knox.

Mr. Knox attended schools in Gardiner and Augusta.

He had been employed by Sunoco in the North Anson plant and had previously worked at Berry’s Construction in Gardiner and Consolidated Waste Services in Norridgewock.

Mr. Knox had started his own ministry, a home mission, Anointed Heart Ministry. His favorite scripture passage was Philippians 4:13.

He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Sheena G. Knox.

Mr. Knox is survived by his wife, Darlene A. (Whipple) Knox of Solon; three sons, Dennis J. Knox, Jr. of Madison, Joey E. Knox and his wife Becky of Anson and Joshua J. Knox of Solon; a daughter, Tia Decimo and her husband Joseph of Solon; a brother, Maynard Knox, Jr. of Gardiner; three sisters, Rosemary Mazzulla and her husband Bill of Auburn, Shareen Paige of Bangor and Barbara Merril and her husband James of Richmond; four grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 PM today at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 PM.

Burial will be held later this spring in the family lot in Libby Hill Cemetery, Gardiner.

AUBURN

Josephine Labbe – age 92 of Minot Ave., died unexpectedly Saturday, April 14, 2001 at Clover Manor. She was born in Augusta on July 15, 1908 the daughter of Napoleon and Exilda (Bernard) Tondreau.

Mrs. Labbe was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta and was a former member of the Lewiston Area Senior Citizens.

She had been co-owner of L & A Bowling in Lewiston for over 15 years and had previously co-owned Remi’s Café in Hallowell and Hallowell Bowling Alley.

Mrs. Labbe was pre-deceased by her husband, Remi Labbe in 1978; a son, Romeo Labbe; two daughters, Dolores Delcourt and Gloria Langlois; three brothers, Laurent Tondreau, Louis Tondreau and Eli Tondreau and a sister, Rose Desjardins.

She is survived by five grandsons, Leonard Delcourt of Westbrook, Remi Delcourt and his wife Celeste of Lewiston, Anthony Delcourt and his wife Pam of Lewiston, Fernand Langlois and his wife Heidi of Sabattus and Dennis Langlois and his wife Lara of Clarksville, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Monday from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will be later this spring in the family lot in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations to: American Cancer Society, New Eng­land Division Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

AUGUSTA

Leo Paul V. LeClair - age 73 of Washington St., died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta on November 3, 1927 the son of Paul and Laura (Thibodeau) LeClair.

Mr. LeClair attended Augusta schools and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Navy, was a member of Le Club Calumet and was an avid fisherman.

Mr. LeClair is survived by three sisters, Constance Veilleux of Augusta, Lorraine LeClair of Augusta and Beverly Paiton and her husband Dwight of Auburn; an aunt, Violet Cote of Waterville; four nieces, Gail McGuire, Nancy Pollis, Patricia Small and Donna Nadeau; two nephews, Bill LeClair and Gary Veilleux; several grand nieces and grand nephews, especially Suzanne L' Etoile and Michael LeClair, several great-grand nieces, especially Emma LeClair and several cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 29th at 10 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow in Holy family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Germain A. LaCroix – age 82, of Summer Haven Road, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center at Glenridge Drive after a brief illness. He was born in LaPatrie, P.Q., Canada on June 8, 1918 the son of Pierre LaCroix and Marie (Forget) LaCroix.

He attended schools in East Angus in Quebec and moved to Augusta, Maine in the 1930's where he met and married Marguerite Loretta Mayo.

Prior to his retirement in 1979, Mr. LaCroix had been employed by the Augusta Mental Health Institute as a chef for 28 years. He was previously co-owner of the Cony Café for 17 years. He had also been involved in the C.C.C. for a time.

Mr. LaCroix was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Maine State Retirees Association and Happy Family Senior Citizens.

Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Marguerite (Mayo) LaCroix of Augusta; one son, Armand LaCroix of Augusta; four daughters, Therese Smith and her husband Stanley of Augusta, Jeannette Gay and her husband Neil of Weeks Mills, Lorraine Ladd and her husband Donald of Augusta and Karen Couture and her husband Paul of Augusta; two sisters, Eva Laplante of Rumford and Laura Polero of Westbrook; 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam LaCroix, and two sisters, Rose LaCroix and Matilda Doiron.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Thursday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Friday, May 18th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Maine - Memorial Processing Center, P.O. VASSALBORO

Ewen MacKinnon – age 95, of Cushnoc Road, and formerly a longtime resident of Long Island, New York, died unexpectedly May 29, 2001 at the home of his son, Ian. He was born in Elgol, Isle of Skye, Scotland on Sept. 14, 1905 the son of Peter MacKinnon and Christina (Grant) MacKinnon.

Prior to his retirement in 1982, Mr. MacKinnon was employed for 30 years as superintendent of the Howard Phipps Estate in Old Westbury, Long Island, New York. He was previously employed in the same capacity by Maine Chance Farms in Mt. Vernon, Maine for 8 years. He had also worked at other Long Island private estates.

Mr. MacKinnon was a professional gardener who received several awards at the New York City Flower Shows.

He was a member of Glen Cove First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove, New York, a 50 year member of Glen Cove Masonic Lodge and the Vernon Valley Masonic Lodge of Mt. Vernon, National Association of Gardeners, Vernon Valley Chapter #68 Order of Eastern Star, Kora Temple Shrine and Scottish Rite Bodies.

Mr. MacKinnon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jessie (Stewart) MacKinnon in 1979, and a son, P. Alistair MacKinnon, in 1998.

Surviving is a son, E. Ian MacKinnon and his wife Ann of Vassalboro; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Carr MacKinnon of Rexford, NY; seven grandchildren: Ewen I.S. MacKinnon II and his wife Ottilie of Chichester, NH, George A. MacKinnon and his wife Heather of Chelmsford, MA, Kirk B. MacKinnon and his wife Joanne of Ashburne, VA, Melissa MacKinnon and her husband John Glaser of Niskayuna, NY, Peter MacKinnon and companion Donna Grande of Burn Hills, NY, Aleck MacKinnon and his wife Vivian of Tucson, AZ and Jessica MacKinnon of Schenectady, NY; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be in Glen Head, Long Island, New York at a later date. Burial will be in Locust Valley Cemetery, Oyster Bay, New York.
