AUGUSTA

Laurence E. Shea – age 89 of Glenridge Dr. and formerly of Purinton Ave., died unexpectedly Sunday, April 1, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge. He was born in Malden, MA on October 28, 1911 the son of John and Mary (Lawson) Shea.

Mr. Shea was a graduate of Malden High School in Malden, MA.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force American Airlines Air Transport Command Group during WW II transporting troops and supplies to the European Theatre for the war effort, receiving the Victory Medal and the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign medals in the process.

Mr. Shea was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.

He had been employed by the Associated Press for over 25 years and had previously worked for American Airlines as a navigator for several years.

Mr. Shea is survived by his wife, Leila (Campbell) Shea of Winslow; three daughters, Joan Yakush of Ocala, FL, Theresa Kinney of Chelsea and Laurelyn Wrigley of Winslow; two sisters, Helen Shea of Augusta and Marion Shea of Winthrop; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Tuesday from 10-11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM.

Burial will be held later this spring in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

Those who desire may make donations to: Maine Parkinson Society, 9 Main St., Bowdoinham, ME 04008.

AUGUSTA

Raymond F. Small - age 60, of Leighton Road, was found dead May 20, 2001at his home after having been ill for several years. He was born in Augusta, Maine on January 17, 1941 the son of Leon F. Small, Sr. and Eleanor (Ayers) Small.

Raymond was a graduate of Cony High School. Prior to his retirement in 1995 due to ill health, he had been employed by Capitol City Transfer, Gagne & Son Concrete and Blue Rock Industries. He had also been a self-employed truck driver for a time. Raymond had also served as a firefighter in the Augusta Fire Department. His hobbies included camping, snowmobiling and he enjoyed racing.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gloria Mitchell.

Surviving is a son, Roderick J. Small and his wife Mary of Industry; one daughter, Julia A. Small of Augusta; one brother, Leon F. Small, Jr. of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Dustin and Ryan Small of Industry; an uncle, Richard Ayers of Sidney and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Following cremation, a committal service will be held June 9th at 11:00 AM at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Maine - Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.

AUGUSTA

Mary O. Sliva – age 89 of South Belfast Ave., died unexpectedly Thursday, April 12, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Division. She was born in Augusta on November 8, 1911 the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Nowrocka) Owcarz.

Mrs. Sliva was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1931 and was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.

She had been employed by Bates Mfg. – Edwards Division for over 30 years.

Mrs. Sliva was pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years, Walter Sliva in 1993 and by a granddaughter, Toni L. Sliva.

She is survived by a son, John J. Sliva and his wife, Gretchen of Randolph; a daughter, Joan French and her husband Richard L. French of Augusta; two sisters, Helen Owcarz of Augusta and Julia Fudala of Earlysville, VA; three grandchildren, J. Scott Sliva, Kristin French and Jonathan French; two great-grandchildren, John S. Sliva, II and Matthew R. Sliva; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 16th at 1 PM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta.

Burial will be in the family lot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Augusta later this spring.

Those who desire may make donations to: St. Andrew’s Capitol Campaign, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Philippe C. Soucy – age 76 of State St., died Thursday, July 19, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Campus, after a brief illness. He was born in Madawaska on June 18, 1925 the son of John M. and Helen C. (Cote) Soucy.

Mr. Soucy was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Gardiner and worked odd jobs most of his life at places such as Lipman Poultry and Bates Mfg. Co.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, a brother, Maurice and two sisters, Rita and Gloria.

Mr. Soucy is survived by a brother, Leo and four sisters, Gertrude, Agnes, Theresa and Evelyn.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 11 AM at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Paul E. Spencer, Sr. - passed away in his sleep on July 11, 2001 six days before his 86th birthday at the Maine Veterans Care Facility. He was born on July 17, 1915 the son of Lettie (Spencer) and Lillo Spencer, Sr. in Madison, ME.

Mr. Spencer served during WW II and had been employed by T.W. Dick in Gardiner, retiring after 25 years.

He was pre-deceased by his mother and father and three brothers, Ismael and Lillo, Jr. of Belfast and Wendall of Sandy Springs, MD.

Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Spencer of Augusta; a daughter, Patricia and her husband Keith Stafford, Sr. of Pittston; two sons, Robert and his wife Lorna Spencer of Wilton and Paul Spencer, Jr. of Oakland; a sister, Ursal and her husband Aoon Buzzell, Sr. of Florida; six grandchildren, Keith, Jr. and his wife Carrie Stafford and their children T.J. and Jamie of South China, Steven Stafford and his friend Dawn and their children Justin and Erik of South China, Cindy Ouellette of Sidney, Robbie Spencer of Augusta, Michael Spencer of Skowhegan and Michelle and her husband Eric Hill of Standish; two special nieces, Judy Potvin and Kathy Reynolds of Augusta; three grandnieces, Ashley, Angela and Betsy; a grandnephew Andrew; a sister-in-law, Lucille McGuire and a brother-in-law, Avon and his wife Betty Buzzell, Jr. of Jefferson.

Following cremation, relatives and friends may visit Monday, July 16th from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A committal service will be held on Tuesday, July 17th at 11 AM at the gravesite in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations in Mr. Spencer's name to: American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

TOGUS

William E. Sterling – age 78 of Togus and formerly of Washington St., Augusta, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Regional Office Center – Togus after a long illness. He was born in Great Neck, VA on April 11, 1923 the son of William and Alice (Moore) Sterling.

Mr. Sterling attended school in Exmore, VA and was a US Navy veteran of WW II.

He had been employed by the Augusta Tank and Culvert Co for several years.

Mr. Sterling is survived by his wife, Alice J. (Jacques) Sterling of Augusta; two sons, William E. Sterling, Jr. and his wife Louella of Silver Springs, MD and Michael A. Sterling and his wife Laura of Hallowell; four daughters, Kay Francis Silva and her husband Dana of Nashua, NH, Gloria J. Babcock and her husband Joseph of Pittston, Joyce A. Farnham and her husband William of Somerville and Carol L. Sterling of Keene, NH; seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

At Mr. Sterling’s request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Rudolph M. Szady – age 84, of Glendon Street, died April 24, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on April 6, 1917 the son of Lawrence Szady and Frances (Horzempa) Szady.

Mr. Szady attended Augusta schools and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He had been employed by Panek brick masons for several years and previously by Hammond Lumber Company. Mr. Szady also was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for a time.

Surviving are two brothers, Joseph Szady and Louis Szady, both of Augusta and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Committal prayers will be offered 11:00 AM Monday, April 30th in the Rev. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

MONMOUTH

Beverly V. Trenholm - age 77, of Main St., and formerly of Flatiron Corner, Lubec, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta after a brief illness. He was born in East Machias on February 17, 1924 the son of John and Velma (Kelley) Trenholm.

Mr. Trenholm attended Lubec Schools and received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Maine in Orono. He performed additional studies at Boston and Northeastern Universities.

He began his career as a teacher in the LaGrange and Lubec schools, and from 1955 to 1958, was teaching principal of Dennysville High School as well as coaching several sports.

Mr. Trenholm worked for 24 years for the Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services as a vocational-rehabilitation councilor for Washington and Aroostook counties, director of programs in adult education and education of the handicapped and Title 1 programs for disadvantaged children. He rounded out his career as supervisor of the Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond and as superintendent of schools for all unorganized territories in Maine.

Mr. Trenholm was a veteran of WW II serving 3 ˝ years in the U.S. Navy, including service in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3315, the American Legion Stuart Green Post of Lubec, a long time member of Masonic Washington Lodge #37 and the Lubec Grange # 434.

Mr. Trenholm served as Vice-president of the Lubec Christian Temple Church Board, Disciples of Christ and was a member of the Lubec Planning Board and was Vice-president of the Lubec Alumni Association. He was the community development director, administering the Lubec Community Development Block Grant Program, which provides low interest loans to small businesses.

Mr. Trenholm was chairman of the Lubec Republican Town Committee, a member of the Washington County Republican Committee and was Town Chairman of Kevin Raye's legislative campaign in 1982.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 43 years, Leone (Campbell) Trenholm; two brothers, Julian and Leland Trenholm and a sister, Dorothy Percival.

Mr. Trenholm is survived by two sons, Gregory S. Trenholm and his wife Rhonda of Farmingdale and Christopher R. Trenholm and his wife Dawn of Monmouth; a daughter, Tamara L. Pratto and her husband Douglas of Peabody, MA; a brother, John C. Trenholm of Lawton, OK; 8 grandchildren, Carrie and Eric Garate, Patrick, Nathan and Nicholas Trenholm and Kelsey, Linda and Daniel Pratto; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Trenholm was very athletic in high school and kept up his athletic interests throughout the rest of his life. As an avid golfer, he has been seen on the Campobello Island Golf Club course in the middle of the February hammering golf tees into the ground.

There will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Christian Temple Church in Lubec. Burial will be in the Olsen cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Regional Medical Center at Lubec, RR 2, Box 380, Lubec, ME 04652. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

MANCHESTER

Jane C. Vanderveld – born September 28, 1923, peacefully passed away at her home on April 28, 2001.

She will be remembered by many friends and family for her thoughtful and giving ways.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue; a son John; grandchildren Lisa, Melissa and Jason; great-grandchildren Kayla and Michael.

Following cremation, committal prayers will be held on Friday at 10 AM in the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

Burial will follow in the cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
