AUGUSTA

Paul E. Spencer, Sr. - passed away in his sleep on July 11, 2001 six days before his 86th birthday at the Maine Veterans Care Facility. He was born on July 17, 1915 the son of Lettie (Spencer) and Lillo Spencer, Sr. in Madison, ME.

Mr. Spencer served during WW II and had been employed by T.W. Dick in Gardiner, retiring after 25 years.

He was pre-deceased by his mother and father and three brothers, Ismael and Lillo, Jr. of Belfast and Wendall of Sandy Springs, MD.

Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Spencer of Augusta; a daughter, Patricia and her husband Keith Stafford, Sr. of Pittston; two sons, Robert and his wife Lorna Spencer of Wilton and Paul Spencer, Jr. of Oakland; a sister, Ursal and her husband Aoon Buzzell, Sr. of Florida; six grandchildren, Keith, Jr. and his wife Carrie Stafford and their children T.J. and Jamie of South China, Steven Stafford and his friend Dawn and their children Justin and Erik of South China, Cindy Ouellette of Sidney, Robbie Spencer of Augusta, Michael Spencer of Skowhegan and Michelle and her husband Eric Hill of Standish; two special nieces, Judy Potvin and Kathy Reynolds of Augusta; three grandnieces, Ashley, Angela and Betsy; a grandnephew Andrew; a sister-in-law, Lucille McGuire and a brother-in-law, Avon and his wife Betty Buzzell, Jr. of Jefferson.

Following cremation, relatives and friends may visit Monday, July 16th from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A committal service will be held on Tuesday, July 17th at 11 AM at the gravesite in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations in Mr. Spencer's name to: American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

AUGUSTA

Howard L. Towle – age 84, of Eastern Avenue, died October 22, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a long illness. He was born in Thomaston, Maine on April 18, 1917 the son of George A. Towle and Edith (Harriman) Towle.

Mr. Towle served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Veterans Administration Medical & Regional Office Center at Togus for 28 years.

Mr. Towle was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.

His wife, Claire (Violette) Towle, died in 1992. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward Curtis in 1994.

Surviving is a son, Gary N. Towle of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren: Howard L. Towle of Sidney, Anne B. Towle of Lewiston and Melissa K. Nelson of Lewiston; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Loretta “Scottie” LeClair of Augusta and his very close friends, Art and Linda Buttrick of Augusta.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

RUMFORD

Thomas E. Trice – age 79, of Hartford Street, died October 8, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus. He was born in Kingston, NY on Nov. 8, 1921 the son of William Trice and Jennie (Reinhardt) Trice.

Mr. Trice served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had been employed by Franklin Savings Bank in Madison for several years and was previously employed by the Town of Esopus, NY in the Highway Department for many years.

Surviving is his wife, Catherine (Dugas) Trice of Rumford; one son, Thomas F. Trice of Rumford; and one granddaughter, Carmen Trice of Rumford.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 17th at the Church of the Nazarene, Weld Street, Dixfield.

Enid C. Veilleux – age 88 of Gray Birch Drive died Monday, August 13, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive after along illness.

She was born in Augusta July 6, 1913 the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Gaudreault) Bolduc.

Mrs. Veilleux was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and for many years she had been employed at R.P. Hazzard Shoe Company and had formerly been employed at Hallowell Shoe Co. for 35 years.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Arthur H. Veilleux on December 11, 1991, also her son, Ronald Veilleux and her grandson, Michael Veilleux both State Troopers.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita Whitehouse and her husband George of Pittston; three granddaughters, Lori Hunt and her husband Philip, Susan Ackerman and her husband Steve and Starr Cloutier and her husband Sean; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Veilleux of Augusta; six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 9 from St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St Augustine Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Aubrey "Gunny" H. Wagner - age 66 of Eastern Ave., died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at his home after a long illness. Though he grew up on Peak's Island, he was born in Madison on June 1, 1935 the son of Aubrey and Delphine (Fish) Wagner.

Mr. Wagner attended Portland Schools and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 until 1970, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

He was employed at the Veterans Administration Medial and Regional Office Center, Togus for 10 years.

Mr. Wagner was a member of United Bikers of Maine, Military Order of the Purple Heart Assoc., U.S. First Recon Battalion Assoc., Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3137, Vietnam Dog Handlers Assoc., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #887, American Legion Post #205, Vietnam Memorial Fund Assoc and Native American Assoc.

He was one of the first to recognize the Combat Veteran Dogs that were killed in action during Vietnam.

He loved motorcycles, playing pool, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and helping friends and brothers in need.

Mr. Wagner was pre-deceased by a son, Donny Wagner.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila K. (Herbert) Wagner of Augusta; an aunt, Josephine Nevers of Massachusetts and two cousins, Alphonse Brooks of Madison and Lee Nevers of Massachusetts.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where members of the American Legion Post #205 are asked to meet at 7 PM to recite prayers for their departed member. A committal service will be held on Friday at noon in the chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery on Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta with Rev. Stephen Tolander, Chaplain at Togus, officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Vietnam Memorial Fund, 1360 Beverly Rd., Suite 300, Mclean, VA, 22101-3685.

HALLOWELL

Irene Auger – age 94 of Academy St. and formerly of Cony Street, Augusta, died Monday, December 3, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on January 17, 1907 the daughter of Napoleon Veilleux and Annie (Bouffard) Veilleux.

Mrs. Auger was educated in Augusta schools and had been employed by Hudson Pulp & Paper Co. for 6 years. She was previously employed by Vickery & Hill Publishing for 18 years.

Mrs. Auger was a long time communicant of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Augusta.

She and her husband enjoyed many years of fishing and hunting together as well as her flower gardens.

Mrs. Auger was pre-deceased by her husband of 61 years, Edmond Auger who died on July 26, 1997. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Roland N. Veilleux.

She is survived by a sister, Antoinette Tardiff of Augusta; nieces Nancy Willis of Mt. Juliette, TN, Lucille Jordan and her husband Richard of China, Alice Fortin of Augusta and Marguerite Gilley of Waterville; a nephew Paul Veilleux of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and several cousins.

Visiting hours are 4-7 PM today at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Wednesday at 2 PM at St. Andrews Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Capitol Campaign, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Augusta

Elizabeth “Betty” Barnes - of Sewall Street, died November 16, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center with her family present. She was born in Augusta, Maine on October 10, 1913 the daughter of James C. and Elizabeth Howell McLaughlin.

She graduated from St. Mary’s School, Cony High School and Gates Business College.

Mrs. Barnes was employed at radio station WRDO for three years starting February 23, 1932 when they first went on the air. For five and a half years she was employed by the Depositor’s Trust Company and was executive secretary to the Treasurer when she left in 1942 to join her husband in his grocery and ice cream business.

Betty and Carl Harland Barnes were married June 18, 1938 in Augusta and when Carl was called to serve in the Army, Betty moved the ice cream business to 41 Sewall Street and continued manufacturing throughout the war years. Subsequently, Carl and Betty expanded the business distributing products throughout central and northern Maine.

Mrs. Barnes was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, a Charter member of Saint Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella, serving as First Trustee. From 1971 to 1997, she was Treasurer of Saint Mary’s Home For The Aged Fund which is now building the Howell House on Sewall Street.

She is survived by her husband, Carl and three children: Nancy B. Hill of Charleston, South Carolina, Richard C. Barnes of Augusta and Margaret “Snooky” B. LaVallee of Gardiner, Maine. Grandchildren include Jason, Rachel, Kayte, Jake Barnes and James and Jenna LaVallee, one nephew and several cousins.

At the request of the deceased there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, Nov. 21st at Saint Mary of the Assumption Church. Memorial donations may be made to Howell House - Saint Mary’s Home for the Aged, c/o 41 Western Ave., Augusta, Maine 04330 or the charity of one’s choice.

WINDSOR

Lucille J. Bastille - age 65, of the Lamson Road, died September 23, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a long illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on March 3, 1936 the daughter of Adelbert Lachance and Bertha (Gilbert) Lachance.

Mrs. Bastille had been a homemaker in her own home for most of her life.

She traveled the world with her husband of 39 years, Wilfred "Will" Bastille, who was an officer in the U.S. Army.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Norman Lachance and a sister Simone Riendeau.

Survivors include her husband, Wilfred "Will" Bastille of Windsor; five sons & daughters: Ronald J. Lachance of Augusta; Ernest of Augusta, Jerry of Ohio, Debbie of Rome, ME and Patsy of Florida; three brothers, Robert Lachance of Augusta, Donald Lachance of Chelsea and Richard Lachance of Randolph; one sister, Pauline Riendeau of Windsor; two granddaughters, Tammy Peabody and Karen Trask; four great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Michael Trask and Allissa and Cody Peabody; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

AUGUSTA

Gerard J. ”Lefty” Beaudoin – age 71, of Riverside Drive, and formerly of Glen Street, died August 12, 2001 at Maine Medical Center, Portland as a result of complications following heart surgery. He was born in Augusta, Maine on July 29, 1930 the son of Elizee C. Beaudoin and Pauline (Gilbert) Beaudoin.

Mr. Beaudoin was educated in Augusta schools and served honorably as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as an electrician at Bath Iron Works for 23 years, retiring in 1980.

Gerard was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and a life member of the Calumet Club. He enjoyed family gatherings, vegetable gardening, playing cribbage, hunting with his brother Phil and nephews Raymond, Roger and Ricky in Carratunk and wintering in Florida. Gerard was also an avid Red Sox fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Emile Beaudoin who died during World War II, and Roland Beaudoin, who died on Aug. 1, 2000.

Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Nancy (Giroux) Beaudoin of Augusta; one son, William G. Beaudoin and his wife Cathy of Windsor; two daughters, Carol L. Latno and her companion Michael Payne and Jacqueline M. Thibodeau and her husband Dale, all of Augusta; four brothers, Philip, Robert, Omer and Alfred Beaudoin, all of Augusta; two sisters, Anita Lapointe of Vassalboro and Theresa Spears of Augusta; six grandchildren: Cody Beaudoin, Renee Beaudoin, Jacob Thibodeau, Brittney Thibodeau, Amanda Latno and Sophia Latno; special niece, Lucille Suitter and her husband Donald; special friends Junior and Muriel Lachance; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers will be offered at 12 noon on Friday, August 17th in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA, 01701-4688 or American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME, 04334-5615.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
