AUGUSTA

Philip L. Pimentel – age 62, of Highland Avenue, died September 21, 2001 at his home following a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born in Newark, NJ on November 28, 1939 the son of Filipe and Mary (Marshall) Pimentel.

Mr. Pimentel served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1958 - 1960.

He was the owner and operator of Airport Automotive, a service station on Western Avenue, for over 25 years. He also maintained a consultant company, PIM Enterprises, since 1984.

Mr. Pimentel was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Augusta and was the founder and Executive Director of Pine Tree Gasoline Retailers Association. He also had had numerous appointments to legislative and professional boards involving the Petroleum Industry.

Phil had been a boating enthusiast for many years. He moored his boat, Tropic Night, in Boothbay Harbor.

His wife, Phyllis (Brown) Pimentel, died on October 14, 1998.

Surviving is a son, Michael R. Pimentel of Framingham, MA.; a daughter, Dana L. Pimentel of Bethesda, MD; two grandchildren, Alexander J. Pimentel and Kathryn P. Pimentel; a half sister, Sheila Henry of Rochester, NY; and several nieces, and nephews.

Visiting hours are 6-9 PM Monday, Sept. 24th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Memorial donations may be made to either the Neeley Foundation, 30 Winter Street, Boston, MA or to HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 829. Waterville, ME 04903-0829.

AUGUSTA

Alphonsine M. Plante – age 96, of Gray Birch Drive and formerly of Summer Street, died October 6, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center at Gray Birch Drive after a long illness. She was born in St. Benoit Labre Beauce, P.Q., Canada on January 2, 1905 the daughter of Ephrem Poulin and Amanda (Beaudoin) Poulin.

Mrs. Plante was educated in Canada and was employed by Commonwealth Shoe Company in Gardiner for many years. She was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Company for several years. She was also a tailor in her own home for many years.

Mrs. Plante was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Her husband, Alfred J. Plante, Sr. died in 1970. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Plante Puffer in 1989, five brothers, 12 sisters and a granddaughter, Linda Plante Gilbert in 1997.

Surviving is a son, Alfred J. Plante, Jr. of Chelsea; a daughter, Lucille Plante of Augusta; three sisters, Madeleine Lagueux and Yvette Grondin, both of St. Ephrem, Canada and Mugette Poulin of St. Honore Shenley, Canada; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral services.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall Street, Augusta, ME 04330-4299.

BONITA SPRINGS, FLORIDA

Henry L. Poulin – age 80, of Fox Ridge Drive, Bonita Springs, FL, and Hammonds Grove, Manchester, Maine, died August 8, 2001 at his home in Bonita Springs after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on September 22, 1920 the son of Odilon Poulin and Maximilienne (Lavallee) Poulin.

Mr. Poulin served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was involved in the battles of the Rhineland and Central Europe in the 340th field artillery battalion.

Henry was a self-employed general contractor for most of his life.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, life member of the following organizations: Calumet Club, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge of Augusta, AMVETS Capitol Memorial Post #14, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Augusta, Military Order of the Cootie and Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2 of Augusta. Henry was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Augusta and a member of the Augusta Country Club since 1956.

His first wife, Rachael Alice (Goulet) Poulin, died April 2, 1987. He was also predeceased by eight brothers, Richard, Laurent, Gabriel, Raymond, Robert, Clement, Arthur and Victor Poulin, and three sisters, Carmen Shaw, Gertrude Russell and Yvonne Veilleux.

Surviving is his wife, Alma (maiden name) Green Poulin of Bonita Springs, FL and Manchester, Maine; three children: Diane Stanewick and her husband Peter of Manchester, ME, Ronald Poulin and his wife Dawn of West Gardiner, ME, and Linda Gustafson and her husband David of LaCanada, CA; one sister, Anita Bailey of Jay, ME; four grandchildren: Scott Curtis, Sean Curtis, Eric Gustafson and John Gustafson; one great-grandson, Nathan Curtis and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Saturday, August 11th and Sunday August 12th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Prayer services are scheduled as follows: members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles are asked to meet at 7:00 PM Saturday; members of Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post are asked to meet 7:30 PM Saturday; members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7:00 PM Sunday; and members of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks are asked to meet at 7:30 PM Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial with military honors provided by the American Legion will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, ME.

AUGUSTA

Muriel Poulin – age 75 of Trueworthy Ave., died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home after a long illness. She was born in Augusta on September 27, 1926 the daughter of John A. and Regina A. (Audet) Poulin.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was a member of the Cushnoc Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Poulin had been employed by Key Bank Corp. for 12 years and had previously been employed by R. P. Hazzard Shoe Co., Taylor Shoe Co. and Commonwealth Shoe Co.

She was pre-deceased by her father, John A. Poulin.

Mrs. Poulin is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gerard Poulin of Augusta, her mother, Regina A. (Audet) Poulin of Augusta; her daughter, Linda Duffy and her husband Christopher of Augusta; two sons, Peter J. Poulin and his wife Pamela of Chelsea and Kenneth G. Poulin and his fiancée Carrie Pelletier of Readfield; two sisters, Yvette Gilbert and Lorette Gagne both of Augusta; a brother, Raynald M. Poulin of Randolph; seven grandchildren and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 28th at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta.

Following cremation, burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

CATONSVILLE, MD

Pauline M.J. Poulin – age 51, of South Rolling Road, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001 at her home sur­rounded by her family. She was born in Augusta, Maine on February 9, 1950 the daughter of Lucien E. “Bobby” Poulin and Merilda (Pare) Poulin.

Pauline graduated from Cony High School in 1968 and received her Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the Univer­sity of Maine at Augusta.

She started employment with the Maine Department of Business Regulation as a Consumer Credit Counselor, a position she held for 10 years. Pauline continued with the State of Maine for several more years in other positions until 1982 when she was hired as business manager by the American Lung Association of Augusta. In 1991, she became executive director of the American Red Cross of Augusta where she worked for three years. Her next employment was with the “Armed Forces Journal International” magazine as their circulation and exhibit director. In 1996, she took the position of circulation and marketing director for “Governing” magazine of Washington, DC. From there, she moved to the “New Republic” magazine also of Washington, DC as circulation and marketing director. After about a year, she accepted the position of circulation director with the “National Institute of Business Management” magazine of McLean, VA for two years. Most recently, Pauline was a self employed consultant for “Congressional Quarterly, Inc.” magazine of Washington, DC.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church of Catonsville, MD and a former member of the Augusta (Maine) Rotary Club.

Pauline loved to travel. She visited many sites including: Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Columbia, Malaysia, Korea and the Middle East. Her favorite travels brought her to Maine, especially Belgrade in the Summer time. Among her other interests were: reading, aerobics, bicycling, music – particularly opera, and flower gardening.

Pauline was preceded in death by her father in 1982, her mother in 1999, and a brother, Joseph Rene Poulin in 1994.

Survivors include 6 brothers, Richard J. Poulin of East Winthrop, Raymond E. Poulin, Gerard L. Poulin, Roland J. “Whitey” Poulin and Jean-Paul Poulain all of Augusta and Alphonse Poulin of New York, NY; four sisters, Lucille M. Bolduc and Noella Poulin, both of Augusta, Muriel J. Poulin of Raymond and Jeanne M. Clements of Belgrade Lakes; her special friend, Carmen Franco-Valiente of Catonsville, MD and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Friday, Nov. 23rd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, Nov. 24th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contri­butions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

MADAWASKA

Joseph P.H. Roy – age 88, of Riverview Street, and formerly of Augusta and Sidney, died Sunday, October 14, 2001 at High View Manor, Madawaska after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on February 5, 1913 the son of Joseph Henry Roy and Johanna (McNamara) Roy.

Mr. Roy was educated in Augusta schools. Prior to his retirement in 1975, he was employed for 33 years by Statler Tissue Company in Augusta.

Mr. Roy was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, and a member of Abnaki Council #334 3rd degree Knights of Columbus for many years.

His wife, Marie Rose (Guerette) Roy, died in 1972. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Irene Ellis.

Surviving is a son, Philip N. Roy, Sr. and his wife Lucy-Ann of Sinclair; a sister, Mary Robichaud of Augusta; two grandsons, Philip N. Roy, Jr., and his wife April of Fairfield and Peter S. Roy and his wife Sherry of Virginia Beach; a great-grandson, Jacob Roy of Fairfield and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit from 7-9 PM Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine where officers and members of Abnaki Council #334 3rd degree Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at 7:30 PM to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Oscar J. Soucie – age 96, of Northern Avenue, died November 16, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a brief illness. He was born in Caribou, Maine on April 4, 1905 the son of Severin Soucie and Angelique (Proulx) Soucie. He was the youngest of 14 children.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Soucie had been employed by Bates Manufacturing Company for 10 years. He was previously employed by several taverns in Augusta as a mixologist for a total of 32 years.

Oscar was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, an Honorary Life member and Eldest living member of Le Club Calumet.

His wife, Sophie (Michaud) Soucie, died on January 6, 1983. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Irene Gidney, who died on Nov. 13, 1995 and Dorothy Daniels who died May 20, 1993.

Surviving are four grandchildren: Frank Gidney & his wife Shannon of Augusta, William “Bill” Daniels & his wife Patricia of Augusta, Gayle Daniels of Kansas and Sharon Peacock & her husband Brian of Mt. Vernon; ten great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Monday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where members of Le Club Calumet are asked to meet at 7:00 PM to offer a prayer servce. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA

Howard D. Stevenson – age 94 of Riverside Dr., died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Division, after a brief illness. He was born in Somerville, MA on September 11, 1907 the son of William R. and Lilla (Spence) Stevenson.

Mr. Stevenson attended school in Medford and Everett, MA and received diplomas from Professor Herrick’s School of Civil Service and Purdue University on Pest Control Technology.

He founded Modern Pest Services, Inc. of Augusta and operated the firm from 1945 until 1973.

Mr. Stevenson was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Florida and was a lifetime honorary member of the National Pest Management Association.

In 1999 he was given the Bartlett W. Eldridge Award, the highest recognition the New England Pest Management Association can bestow a member.

He was an avid motorcyclist and yachtsman and had been a member of the Wawanock Power Squadron. He also enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Rangeley, ME.

Mr. Stevenson was pre-deceased by a brother and a sister.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jennie A. (Maskewich) Stevenson of Augusta; a son, Richard E. Stevenson and his wife Bonnie of Boothbay; two daughters, Carol A. MacDowell of Chelsea and Joan M. Thomas and her husband Dr. Richard Thomas of Bangor; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM with Rev. Michael Gendreau, pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester.

Those who desire may make donations to: Sweetser Children’s Home, 50 Moody St., Saco, ME, 04072-0892.

Augusta

Raymond Augustus Tobey – age 66, of Sewall Street died Monday November 19 at Maine Veterans Home after a long illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on February 8, 1935 the son of Charles A. and Blanche (Weeks) Tobey.

Mr. Tobey was a Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He had been employed at Hudson Pulp and Paper Co. and subsequently Statler Tissue Co. for over 39 years.

He was a member of the United Pulp and Paper Union and a former member of Fitzgerald-Cummings Post # 2 American Legion.

Raymond was preceded in death by his step-mother, Edna Emerson Tobey.

Survivors include his wife, Betty (Patten) Tobey of Augusta; five sons: Paul R. Tobey and his wife Susan of Pittston; Barry J. Tobey of Rogers, Arkansas; Dana L. Tobey and his wife Heidi of Augusta; Jason A. Tobey and his wife Sarah of Vassalboro and Tracey A. Tobey and his wife Dawn of Vassalboro; two daughters: Kelly (Tobey) Tozier and her husband Bill of Jefferson and Gina (Tobey) Hall and her husband Donald of Randolph; two brothers: Donald Tobey of Clay City, Indiana and Harry Tobey of Pittston; two half brothers: Dale Tobey and Duane Tobey both of Pittston; two sisters: Laura Emerson of Whitefield and Phyllis Howard of Greenville; six half sisters: Myrtle Brown of Augusta; Brenda Mullins of Turner; Barbara Thomas of Gardiner; Debbie Tobey address unknown; Patricia Daniels and Pam Boucher both of Augusta; 19 grandchildren, also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Committal prayers will be offered 1:00 PM Wednesday in the chapel of Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta with the Rev. Frank Patten officiating.
