AUGUSTA

Roland G. Martin – age 81, of 337 Riverside Drive, was found dead June 25, 2002 at his home. He was born in Augusta, Maine on March 15, 1921 the son of George Martin and Blanche (Goulette) Martin.

Mr. Martin was educated in Augusta where he graduated from Cony High School. He served briefly as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Bates Manufacturing Company for over 30 years.

Roland was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He enjoyed boating, fishing, flower gardening and model railroading.

His wife, Violet (Fontaine) Martin, died in 1988.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond R. Martin of Augusta and his companion, Judi Toman, and Patrick M. Martin and his wife Barbara of Oakland; three sisters, Rita Troutman of Tulsa, OK, Norma King of Waterville and Arlene DeBlois of Winthrop; three grandchildren, three (almost four) great-grandchildren: several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Thursday, June 27th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 AM Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Delvina A. Melanson – age 98 of Leighton Rd., died May 11, 2002 at Augusta Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center after a brief illness. She was born in St. Marie, P.Q., Canada on December 20, 1903 a daughter of Napoleon and Marie (Blouin) Gosselin.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta.

Mrs. Melanson was co-owner and operator of Melanson’s Market in Augusta for 26 years and continued to work for her son at the market for another 26 years.

She was well known for crocheting and knitting afghan and mittens which she gave to family and friends.

Mrs. Melanson was pre-deceased by her husband of 54 years, Treffle Melanson in 1980. Also preceding her in death were 3 brothers, 4 sisters, a granddaughter, Salena Arbour, 2 great-granddaughters, Cori Bridgham and Ann Trask and a son-in-law, Leo Levesque.

She is survived by a son, Richard Melanson of Augusta; five daughters, Theresa Whitten of Manchester, Muriel Vachon and Priscilla Duplessis both of Augusta, Joanne Grant of Farmingdale and Diane Bennett of Pittston; a sister, Delima Thibodeau of Augusta; 34 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit on Tuesday, May 14th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 AM Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the family lot at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations to: St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA, MAINE

Simone A. Michaud – age 80, of Northern Avenue, died June 30, 2002 at her home after a long illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on October 28, 1921 the daughter of Ernest Morrissette and Maria (Jacques) Morrissette.

Mrs. Michaud was educated in Augusta schools and was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a former member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens, a former member of Kennebec Valley YMCA and she took great joy in playing golf.

Her husband, Joseph Gerard “Gerry” Michaud, died in 1990. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Wilfred Morrissette.

Surviving are four sons, Victor G. Michaud and his wife Jeanette of Augusta, Daniel R. Michaud and his wife Susan of Wasilla, Alaska, Vincent E. Michaud and his wife Janine of Brewer and Donald E. Michaud and his wife Kathy of Auburn, NH; one daughter, Pauline S. Pyburn and her husband Philip of Salem, MA & Weston, FL; one brother, Raymond J. Morrissette and his wife Germaine of South China, ME; one sister, Jeannette Dowling of East Winthrop, ME; seven grandchildren: Edward Michaud, Nicole Bruyére, Gillian Pyburn, Jay Pyburn, Carrie Michaud, Vanessa Michaud and Jonathan Michaud; three great-grandchildren, Lea Bruyére, Alexandre Bruyére and Simeon Michaud; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10 AM Monday, July 8th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial of the urn will be in the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to HealthReach Hospice, Gardiner Division, P.O. Box 829, Waterville, ME 04903-0829.

MT. VERNON

William “Bill” E. Morgan, III – age 50 of Plains Rd., died unexpectedly Saturday, July 20, 2002. He was born in Gardiner on July 28, 1951 a son of William E. Morgan, Jr. and Corris A. (Wyman) Morgan.

Mr. Morgan attended Mt. Vernon and Readfield schools.

He had been employed by Gagne and Son Concrete for several years and had previously been the owner/operator of Morgan Excavation.

Bill was an avid hunter and took many hunting trips. He enjoyed his boat, the “Ginger Lee”, taking family and friends out for rides. He had just started taking the time to go four wheeling, brook fishing and spending time with his wife, that is, when he would leave the garage. He always had a truck, car or tractor in the garage to work on for someone; he was a very good mechanic. But he would always stop what he was doing to help a friend or to play with his grandchildren.

Bill also had a special buddy whom he enjoyed very much, his dog “Fozzie”.

He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Linda A. (York) Morgan of Mt. Vernon; a son, William E. Morgan, IV and his wife Rhonda of Lewiston; a daughter, Rebecca A. Rowe and her husband Chip of Coppell, TX; a step-son, Ernest Gagne, Jr. of Lynn, MA; two step-daughters, Tonya Boynton and her husband Gary Boynton, II of Readfield and Loretta Wilson and her husband Marcel of Auburn; a brother, Arthur Morgan of Mt. Vernon; four sisters, Carol Thomas of Winthrop, Jenny McIntosh of South Portland, Mary Poluffe of South Portland and Helen Bowman; a special friend and cousin, Donald Morgan of Readfield; 9 grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM. Burial will follow in East Readfield Cemetery, Readfield.

SIDNEY

Oakley C. Philbrick – age 88 of Shepard Rd., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Thayer Campus in Waterville following a long illness. He was born in Sidney on July 9, 1914 a son of Herbert H. and Winifred (Robinson) Philbrick.

Mr. Philbrick was a U. S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.

He had been employed by the State of Maine for over 15 years in the Liquor Commission and had previously owned and operated Oakley’s Auto body in Augusta.

Mr. Philbrick was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a former member of the Lions Club in Augusta.

He was a Registered Maine Guide and loved hunting and fishing.

Mr. Philbrick was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Florence D. (Blouin) Philbrick and four brothers, Ray, Wendell, Daniel and Charles Philbrick.

He is survived by four nephews, Ray Philbrick of Sidney, Robert A. Philbrick of Sidney, Charles Philbrick of Massachusetts and Michael Philbrick of Sidney; a niece, Doris Brown of Augusta; a grandson, Jason N. Foster and his wife Brenda of Marlboro, MA; his companion and caregiver, Elisabeth Michaud and several cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 6-8 PM on Monday, July 22nd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. Burial will be held at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either: American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330 or HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 829, Waterville, ME 04903-0829.

WINTHROP

Horace Howell “Hoddy” Pierce – age 92, of Old Lewiston Road, formerly of Townsend Street and Pearl Street in Augusta, died Feb. 14, 2002 at Heritage Rehabilitation & Living Center after a long illness. He was born on Dec. 25, 1909 in Livermore Falls, Maine the son of Horace Arthur Pierce and Mary Ann (Howell) Pierce.

Mr. Pierce was a 1929 graduate of Cony High School of Augusta and had been employed by the Augusta School Department for 15 years, retiring in 1974. He was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Co., Edwards Division for 30 years.

Hoddy was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church of Augusta, a life member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens and Maine State Retirees Association.

He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Hoddy married Anita Cloutier on Oct. 14, 1939. She died on Aug. 15, 1984.

Surviving are two daughters, Joan P. Painter & her husband James of Winthrop and Wanita P. Meagher of Augusta; one sister, Mary L. Vigue of Augusta; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Sunday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where members of the Augusta Elks Lodge are asked to meet at 7:30 PM Sunday to offer a prayer service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Alzheimers Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

CATONSVILLE, MD

Pauline M.J. Poulin – age 51, of South Rolling Road, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001 at her home sur­rounded by her family. She was born in Augusta, Maine on February 9, 1950 the daughter of Lucien E. “Bobby” Poulin and Merilda (Pare) Poulin.

Pauline graduated from Cony High School in 1968 and received her Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the Univer­sity of Maine at Augusta.

She started employment with the Maine Department of Business Regulation as a Consumer Credit Counselor, a position she held for 10 years. Pauline continued with the State of Maine for several more years in other positions until 1982 when she was hired as business manager by the American Lung Association of Augusta. In 1991, she became executive director of the American Red Cross of Augusta where she worked for three years. Her next employment was with the “Armed Forces Journal International” magazine as their circulation and exhibit director. In 1996, she took the position of circulation and marketing director for “Governing” magazine of Washington, DC. From there, she moved to the “New Republic” magazine also of Washington, DC as circulation and marketing director. After about a year, she accepted the position of circulation director with the “National Institute of Business Management” magazine of McLean, VA for two years. Most recently, Pauline was a self employed consultant for “Congressional Quarterly, Inc.” magazine of Washington, DC.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church of Catonsville, MD and a former member of the Augusta (Maine) Rotary Club.

Pauline loved to travel. She visited many sites including: Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Columbia, Malaysia, Korea and the Middle East. Her favorite travels brought her to Maine, especially Belgrade in the Summer time. Among her other interests were: reading, aerobics, bicycling, music – particularly opera, and flower gardening.

Pauline was preceded in death by her father in 1982, her mother in 1999, and a brother, Joseph Rene Poulin in 1994.

Survivors include 6 brothers, Richard J. Poulin of East Winthrop, Raymond E. Poulin, Gerard L. Poulin, Roland J. “Whitey” Poulin and Jean-Paul Poulain all of Augusta and Alphonse Poulin of New York, NY; four sisters, Lucille M. Bolduc and Noella Poulin, both of Augusta, Muriel J. Poulin of Raymond and Jeanne M. Clements of Belgrade Lakes; her special friend, Carmen Franco-Valiente of Catonsville, MD and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Friday, Nov. 23rd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, Nov. 24th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contri­butions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Augusta

Mrs. Marjorie A. Pray, 79, beloved wife of Waldo E. Pray of Famingdale died Monday at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta after a long illness.

Mrs. Pray, formerly of Portland and Cumberland Foreside, was born in Brighton, Mass. the daughter of Thomas J. and Margaret (MacDonough) Day on August 18, 1922.

The family lived in Newton Highlands and Qunicy, Mass., before returning to the Greater Boston area following her graduation from Qunicy High School.

Mrs. Pray and her husband moved to Portland following their marriage in 1946.

She was employed as a switchboard operator at the Guy Gannett newspaper in Portland where her husband was a member of the editorial department. She also served as cashier for the Portland Water District and later as a secretary at the First National Bank. In 1969 her husband joined the public relations services of Central Maine Power Co. and the family moved to Farmingdale.

Mrs. Pray was an active member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gardiner and for many years served as a volunteer at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. The Kennebec Valley Regional Health Agency honored Mrs. Pray in 1988 with an award for significant service to the community as a senior volunteer.

During W.W. II, Mrs. Pray was active in the USO in the Boston area where she met her husband who was an Army Air Corps cadet, training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They were married following his return from China at the end of W.W. II. They resided in Portland and South Portland before purchasing a home in Wildwood Park, Cumberland Foreside where the family lived until 1969.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Pray is survived by three daughters, Margo Ann Pfauser and her husband John of Sanford, Fla., Carol Brook and her husband Gregory of Midway Utah, and Walda Jean Gallant and her husband David of Westbrook; six grandchildren William Young of Winter Springs, Fla., Andrew Young of Houston, Tx., Jason Gallant of Long Beach, Ca., Meghan Gallant of Gilbert, Ariz., and Shauna and Christopher Brook of Madison, WI. Two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; a brother Alan Day of North Acton, Mass. and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 from ST. Joseph’s Catholic Church Gardiner followed by Interment at the New Maine Veterans Memroial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

CHELSEA

Ethel May Sargent – age 46 of Sylvan Way, went to be with her Lord Monday evening, June 17, 2002 following a long illness. She was born in Gardiner on April 1, 1956 the daughter of Daniel and Josephine (Abbott) Oliver.

Ethel attended Gardiner Area High School, graduating in 1975.

Ethel spent her last four winters in Florida, where she enjoyed the warm sunshine and many theme parks.

Ethel was a very spirited, Christian woman and enjoyed many Christian programs as well as her cooking programs. Some of her favorite hobbies included reading, writing and cats. She was a very unique and loving woman. One of her greatest joys was spending time with loved ones.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, George Sargent.

Mrs. Sargent is survived by her mother, Josephine (Abbott) Oliver of Augusta; her father, Daniel Oliver, Sr. and his wife Mabel of Gardiner; a brother, Daniel Oliver, Jr. of Boothbay and will be sadly missed by the Judkins family whom she resided with for 18 years.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
