AUGUSTA

Marie Edith Dostie – age 97, formerly of Mt. Vernon Avenue, died July 31, 2002 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Augusta, Maine on April 23, 1905 the daughter of Augustin Cloutier and Angelina (Mathieu) Cloutier.

Mrs. Dostie was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She had been employed by Bates Manufacturing Company for 20 years and by E.E. Taylor Shoe Company for 10 years while raising 12 children.

She was an extrodinary person with many natural talents. She could tat, crochet, sew, quilt and make braided and hooked rugs. As a young mother, she would make many of her children’s clothes. Over the years, in her “spare” time, she tatted beautiful ladies handkerchieves, crocheted countless afghans and made about 100 quilts. She shared most of these items with family and friends.

Marie Edith was predeceased by two husbands, Albert Soucy and Alonzo Dostie. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Soucy and a daughter, Ann Marie Gagne.

Surviving are five sons, Herman Soucy and John Soucy of Largo, FL, Rene Soucy of Manchester, NH, George Soucy of Belgrade, and Arthur Soucy of Mt. Vernon; five daughters, Albertine Labbe, Theresa Smith, Gloria Fleming and Rose Couture, all of Augusta and Constance Beckim of Gardiner; one brother, Rosario Cloutier of North Whitefield; two sisters, Marion Fortin and Reinette Dearborn both of Augusta; one step-son, Gabriel Dostie; two step-daughters, Rachael Violette and Pauline Gauthier; 42 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours are 3-5 & 7-9 PM Sunday, August 4th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 AM Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bread of Life Ministries, 157 Water St., Augusta, ME 04330 or American Diabetes Association, Maine – Memorial Processing Center, P.O. VASSALBORO

Phyllis Lula (Rogers) Durgan – age 80 of Cushnoc Rd., passed away in her sleep Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at her home and went to be with her husband, Theodore Roosevelt Durgan, who passed away this past July 17th. She was born in Stark, NH on April 20, 1922 a daughter of Gilbert C. and Hazel Vivian (Abbott) Rogers.

Mrs. Durgan was a graduate of Groveton High School in Groveton, NH and attended Brightlook Hospital’s School of Nursing.

She had been employed by the Augusta Mental Health Institute as a Psychiatric Aide and was a Nanny to the children of Jim and Libby Mitchell of Vassalboro had worked at the Chapel Street Boarding Home in Augusta and previously had been a telephone switchboard operator for the Groveton Telephone Company.

Mrs. Durgan was a member of the Riverside Congregational Church and had been very active in the Woman’s Fellowship at the Church.

She was a nurturer and care giver to everyone. She was a good listener, a loyal and true friend and a protector to all children and all animals.

Mrs. Durgan was pre-deceased by her husband, Theodore “Ted” Roosevelt Durgan on July 17, 2002. Also preceding her in death is 2 brothers, Murray and Floyd Rogers and four sisters, Muriel Stuart, Pauline Wells, Doris Stearns and Ernestine Patnoe.

Surviving is a daughter, Jane Vivian Cloutier and her husband Dan of Vassalboro; two brothers, Bernard Rogers of Hartford, VT and Wayne Rogers and his wife Carole of Augusta; two sisters, Mavis Griswold of Lyndonville, VT and Marilyn Moulton and her husband Fred of East Berlin, PA; two grandchildren, Lance Daniel Cloutier and his partner Jenny Champagne and their children Mikaylah, Moriah, Bailey Cloutier, and Michelle Marie Cloutier and her partner Jack Hopper and their children David, Zachary and Kaleb Hopper as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit Friday, August 16th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 17th at 2PM at the Riverside Congregational Church, Vassalboro with Rev. Lawrence “Bud” Merkens, officiating. Burial and committal prayers will be held on Tuesday, August 20th at 9 AM at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

VASSALBORO

Theodore R. “Ted” Durgan – age 83, of Cushnoc Road, died July 17, 2002 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, Augusta after a long illness. He was born in Sherman, Maine on October 21, 1918 the son of Charles H. Durgan and Mary Ellen (McNally) Durgan.

Mr. Durgan graduated from Sherman Mills High School and served honorably as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was employed by the Veterans Administration at Togus for several years. He was previously employed by the U.S. Postal Service, Capital Lumber Co., Cives Steel and several area farms.

Ted was a handyman who would help his friends and relatives with just about any project. He enjoyed floral gardening, playing chess and cribbage. Ted won many bowling trophies and was an avid hunter and trapper.

Mr. Durgan was a member of Riverside Congregational Church of Vassalboro, Kora Temple, Kennebec Valley Shrine Club and Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #35.

Surviving is his wife, Phyllis (Rogers) Durgan of Vassalboro; one daughter, Jane Vivian Cloutier and her husband Dan of Vassalboro; one brother, Dean A. Durgan of Winthrop; two sisters, Lucy Sleeper of Sherman Mills and Dorothy Bouchard of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren: Lance Daniel Cloutier and his partner Jenny Champagne and their children Mikaylah, Moriah, Bailey Cloutier, and Michelle Marie Cloutier and her partner Jack Hopper; and their children David, Zachary and Kaleb Hopper as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Friday, July 20th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine where members of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge are asked to meet at 7:30 pm for a masonic service. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at Riverside Congregational Church, Vassalboro with Rev. Lawrence “Bud” Merkens, officiating. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery at a later date.

Waterville

Leona Mae Fifield – 73 of 220 Kennedy Memorial Drive died Friday, September 27, 2002 at Lakewood Nursing Home, Waterville after a long illness. She was born in Weymouth, Mass, December 6, 1928 the daughter of Luther and Lottie (Hunt) Pierce.

Mrs. Fifield had been employed for over 29 years by the City of Hope Medical Center of Duarte, California and for a time at Baldwin Park, Ca. She was a graduate of Pasadena College with a BA Degree in English and Biology.

She was a member of the South China Regional Church of the Nazarene

She was pre-deceased by her husband Oliver Theron Fifield Jr. in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter Leanne R. Fifield of Augusta.

At her request there will be no hours of visitation.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Fifield will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 from the South China Regional Church of the Nazarene with the Pastor Rev. Mark Smith, officiating. A Graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1 P.M. at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

WATERVILLE

Dorothy J. Gagnon – age 84, of Kennedy Memorial Drive and formerly of Augusta, died August 18, 2002 at Lakewood Manor after a long illness. She was born in Lewiston, Maine on September 15, 1917 the daughter of Arthur Jolin and Fedora (Fortier) Jolin.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Gagnon had been employed by Edwards Manufacturing Company in Augusta for 15 years. She was previously employed by Hathaway Shirt Factory in Waterville for several years.

Mrs. Gagnon enjoyed camping at Lake Moxie and was a great cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Arthur and Robert Jolin and a grandson, Jeffrey Gagnon.

Surviving is a son, James R. Gagnon and his wife Diane of Augusta; a daughter, Linda L. Grenier and her husband Robert of Clinton; a sister, Lucille Coates of Waterville; four grandchildren: Paul Gagnon and Paula Gagnon, both of Augusta, Kelly Grenier of Winslow and Kerry Grenier of Waterville; 10 great-grandchildren; her long-time companion, Chester Savoy of Waterville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Continuing Care Center, 220 Kennedy Memorial Drive, Waterville, ME 04901.

Augusta

Tadako Gagnon – age 75, of Hayden Road, Augusta died July 17, 2002 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness.

She was born on January 28, 1927 in Tayook City, Japan.

Tadako was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life.

She was a member of the Worromontogus Lake Association, Fox Glen Snowmobile Club, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post # 9 Gardiner and a life member of Sportsman Alliance of Maine.

Survivors include her husband, Roger G. Gagnon of Augusta, and one nephew.

At her request, there will be no public visitation. A private graveside service is scheduled at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Wayne P. Gero – age 52, of South Belfast Avenue, died unexpectedly July 26, 2002 in Fayette. He was born in Greensboro, NC on July 17, 1950 the son of Alvah Gero and Yvonne (Poulin) Gero.

Wayne had been employed by Bath Iron Works as a welder for several years.

He was a member of United Bikers of Maine.

Surviving is a son, Brashua Gero of Manchester, NH; two brothers, Roland A. Soucy of Franklin and Joseph Soucy of Nashua, NH; two sisters, Carmen Peters of Hudson, FL and Dolly Tyndall of Monroe, NC; and a special cousin, Shirley Rocque of Augusta.

There are no public visiting hours scheduled. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

AUGUSTA

Leona B. Giroux – age 91 of Glenridge Dr. and formerly of Northern Ave., died Monday, August 12, 2002 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge after a long illness. She was born in Beckley, WV on August 13, 1910 a daughter of Hines B. and Delia (Holdren) Heimer.

Mrs. Giroux was a home maker for most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was a former member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society.

Mrs. Giroux was pre-deceased by her husband, George E. Giroux and her brother, Roy B. Heimer.

She is survived by a half sister, Annie Mae Althizer of Christiansburg, VA and several nieces, nephews and cousins including 2 special nephews, Albert Giroux of Biddeford and Clement Giroux of St. Petersburg, FL.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 2-4 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Yvette A. Guimond – age 94, formerly of 49 State Street, died July 10,2002 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born in St. Methode, P.Q., Canada on March 22, 1908 the daughter of Alphonse Rodrigue and Suzanne (Cyr) Rodrigue.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Guimond was employed by Edwards Manufacturing Company for 40 years. She had also worked as a cleaning lady at the State House and Augusta General Hospital for several years.

Mrs. Guimond was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Her husband, Eugene Guimond, died in 1966. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lionel Rodrigue and Joseph Rodrigue; and five sisters, Dora Melanson, Eglantine Lambert, Marie Forget, Margaret Castonguay and Grace Rodrigue.

Surviving are two sons, Eugene E. Guimond and his wife Joan, and Laurier Guimond and his wife Jean, all of Augusta; one daughter, Jeannette (Guimond) Boucher and her husband Alphonse of Augusta; one brother, Jean “Babe” Rodrigue and his wife Shirley of Augusta; two sisters, Edith Chasse and Mary Jane Paradis, both of Augusta; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

There are no public visiting hours scheduled. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Friday July 12th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Waterville

Lily E. Whitney Hinkley – 73 of 22 Center Street, Augusta died Thursday at Mid Maine Medical Center-Thayer Unit after a brief illness. She was born in Liberty June 26, 1928 the daughter of Edward P. and Glennie (Bailey) Hannan.

Mrs. Hinkley had been employed for a time at Taylor Shoe Company and Hallowell Shoe Company but for most of her life had been a homemaker.

She was predeceased by her first husband Stilman Whitney.

Survivors include her husband David Ernest Hinkley of Augusta; two sons: Lincoln Whitney of Washington and Timothy Whitney and his wife Linda of Union, A daughter Althea L. Leach Irving of Union; a sister; Althea Palanza of Buckfield; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no hours of visitation or viewing, a graveside service is scheduled for 2 o’clock on June 29th at Chadwick Hill Cemetery, South China.

Those who desire, may make donations in her memory to the Charity of their choice.
