AUGUSTA

Lionel “Pete” Lettre – age 83, formerly a longtime resident of 91 Townsend Road, died Dec. 17, 2002 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus after a long & courageous battle with his illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on June 16, 1919 the son of Francois Lettre and Ernestine (Labbe) Lettre.

Mr. Lettre served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medals, and European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign ribbon from the Anzio Beach Head battle of 1944. Pete was part of the 135th Infantry Regiment and fought in the following battles and campaigns: Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Pete was employed by Edwards Manufacturing Company in Augusta for 23 years. He was previously employed by Bath Iron Works.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, MacCrillis-Rousseau Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Winslow and a life member of the Calumet Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Adrien Lettre, four sisters, Cecile Jacques, Antoinette Lettre, Joan Bolduc and Jeannette Couture as well as a grandson, Richard Lettre.

Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Alice (Poulin) Lettre of Augusta; five sons: Robert Lettre and his wife Audrey of Sheboygan, Wis., Donald Lettre and his wife Carmen of Augusta, Victor Lettre and his wife Louise of Augusta, Michael Lettre and his wife Susan of Palermo; and Dennis Lettre and his wife Julianne of Augusta; three daughters: Arlene Davis and her husband Tim of Augusta, Susan Daniels and her husband Tom of Augusta and Debi Gray and her husband Scott of Sidney; one brother, Emile Lettre of Hartford, CT; three sisters, Simone Baker of Jackson, NJ, Yvonne Doyon and Beatrice Laliberte, both of Augusta; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews & cousins.

There are no public visiting hours scheduled. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 AM Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW, Department of Maine, C/O V.O.D., P.O. Box 1286, Auburn, ME 04210.

WINDSOR

Solange A. Merrill – age 61, of Route 105, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. She was born in St. Benoit, P.Q., Canada on April 1, 1941 the daughter of Leo Paul Dulac and Candide (Blais) Dulac.

Mrs. Merrill was educated in Canada and was employed at Hallowell Shoe Company for many years. She was previously employed by Bangor Shoe Company.

Mrs. Merrill was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Gardiner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a step-son, Richard W. Merrill.

Surviving is her husband, Richard R. Merrill of Windsor; a son, Ricky R. Merrill, Sr. and his wife Sarah of Windsor; a daughter, Linda C. Trask and her husband Bob of Chelsea; two brothers, Andre Dulac and his wife Linda of Augusta and Godfrey Dulac and his wife Valerie of Chelsea; a sister, Dorothy Allen and her husband Paul of Augusta; five grandchildren: Ricky R. Merrill, Jr. and his wife Crystal, Monica R. Trask, Kattie L. Trask, Brent W. Merrill and Becky L. Boucher; one great-granddaughter, Abagail Merrill; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Tuesday, Jan. 14th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 AM Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

WINDSOR

Jane Needham – age 76, of Route 32, died November 28, 2002 at her home after a long illness. She was born in Old Town, Maine on February 4, 1926 the daughter of Stanley F. Needham and Madeleine (Sweeney) Needham.

Jane graduated from Old Town High School in 1943 and she received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1947. She continued her education in the field of nursing at Children’s Medical Center where she received her certification as a registered nurse in 1954.

Prior to her retirement in 1982, Jane was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus as a registered nurse for many years. She was the head nurse in the psychiatric unit for several years. She was previously a music teacher in Lewiston where taught violin. Her musical talents were showcased as a violinist for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra for a time.

Jane was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church of Augusta, a past lecturer of the Jefferson Grange #197, a former member of the Windsor Grange, a member of the Lincoln Pomona #19 and she was active with the Kennebec County Democratic Party.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Martin F. Needham and Richard P. Needham.

Surviving are two brothers, Robert S. Needham of Cherry Hill, NJ and Michael E. Needham and his companion Sharon Manley of Windsor; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jane loved wire haired Terriers. She had them all her life.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, Dec. 4th at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s Street, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 829, Waterville, ME 04903-0829.

AUGUSTA

Lucille French Norton – born in Windsor, Maine on August 24, 1919, died at MaineGeneral Medical Center on the morning of December 23, 2002 after a series of illnesses. She was a resident of Riverside Drive and formerly a longtime resident of Windsor.

Lucille is the widow of Capt. Britt H. Norton, Sr., who died in 1986, and the daughter of Mary & Harold French. She is survived by her four children: Dr. Patricia Norton of Augusta, Britt H. Norton, Jr. and his wife Paula of Wayne, Janice Gilbert of Augusta and Jeffrey Norton and his wife Brenda of Windsor; her six grandchildren: Jaime, Ryan and Amber Gilbert, Allegra, Courtney and Britt H. Norton III; her three month old great-granddaughter, Sydney Britt Gilbert of Atlanta, GA; her sister, Dorothy Allen of Augusta; three nephews, two great-nieces, a great-nephew and a granddaughter-in-law.

Lucille dressed wigs for Broadway shows in New York City before marrying her seafaring husband, Britt, in 1939. They were married for 47 years. Over those years, she accompanied him aboard the oil tankers on which he sailed for trips to far away places, such as Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Panama and many U.S. ports on both coasts.

As passengers were not allowed aboard oil tankers, Lucille, with her U.S. Coast Guard papers in order, signed on board as the ship’s librarian for each of her trips with Britt. At the end of each trip, the company owning the ship paid her one penny for her librarian duties. She didn’t get rich, she said, but she had a lot of fun on her adventurers with her husband.

Lucille spent her time ashore raising her children, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, and caring for her mother who lived with her for forty years.

She was an active volunteer in the community, and an active member of the Order of Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron of Lily of the Valley, OES Chapter in Weeks Mills in 1960-61, 1961-62 & 1971-72.

Her hobbies included playing the steel guitar, singing & yodeling, painting in oil on canvas, dressmaking/tailoring, scrabble and card playing.

Lucille’s passing leaves a very large gap in the Norton family circle.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Sunday, Dec. 29th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday. Following cremation, burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Windsor. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, New England Affiliate Central Processing Center, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA, 01701-4688.

AUGUSTA

Beatrice V. Pomerleau – age 86 of Northern Ave., and formerly of Washington St., died peacefully Friday, September 13, 2002 at her home following a brief illness with her family by her side. She was born in Augusta on August 30, 1916 a daughter of Ernest and Josephine (Poulin) Pare.

Mrs. Pomerleau had been a proud homemaker for most of her life. She had been employed by Hazzard Shoe Co. for many years and previously worked for Taylor Shoe and Hallowell Shoe Co.

Mrs. Pomerleau was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, spending most of her life taking care of others. Her hobby was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Pomerleau was pre-deceased by her husband, Arthur T. Pomerleau in 1979 and five sisters, Josephine LaVallee, Roselia Violette, Merilda Poulin, Mary Rose Fortin and Mary Blanche Burchell.

She is survived by two sons, Maurice Pomerleau and his wife Alberta of Sidney and Arthur “Sonny” Pomerleau and his wife Claire of Augusta; three daughters, Joan Gregoire and her husband Donald, Lorraine Doyon and her husband Val and Beatrice Tondreau and her husband Norman all of Augusta; three brothers, Alphonse Pare, Robert Pare and Paul Pare all of Augusta; 2 sisters, Rita Glidden of Vassalboro and Madeleine Sanborn of Augusta; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren a great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Augusta

Sherry Lynn Quirion – 39 of Belgrade died December 4, 2002 at MaineGeneral Medical Center-Augusta Division after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in the U.S.A.F. Hospital at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (McGuire) Paulin.

Mrs. Quirion had been employed for a short time at the Y.M.C.A. in Augusta and at Bolley’s Restaurant and prior to that at Carleton Woolen Mills in Winthrop for over 10 years. She was a graduate of Cony High School in the class of 1982. She was a communicant of St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Keith Daniel Quirion of Belgrade; a foster daughter Valerie of Belgrade, two brothers: Todd Paulin and Jeff Paulin both of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters: Joy Paulin Lovett of Jacksonville, Florida and Jill Paulin Satchno of Augusta; also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit today, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 from St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue Augusta. Those who desire, may make donations for the benefit of Baby Valerie c/o Keith D. Quirion R..R. 1 Box 835, Belgrade, Maine 04917.

AUGUSTA

Verna L. Radcliffe – age 87 of Brentwood Rd., died Saturday, December 7, 2002 at her home. She was born in Augusta on December 10, 1914 a daughter of George A. and Florence (Sanborn) Lynch.

Mrs. Radcliffe was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1933 and had been a homemaker for most of her life. She truly enjoyed spending time with grand children and great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years, Richard C. Radcliffe, a brother and 2 sisters.

Mrs. Radcliffe is survived by three sons, Michael Radcliffe of Bristol, CT, Ricky Radcliffe of Augusta and Robert Radcliffe and his wife Shirley of Westerville, OH; six grandchildren, Scott Radcliffe, Heather Levesque, Heidi Stratton, Marissa Radcliffe, Keith Radcliffe and Jamal Burns; four great-grandchildren, Austin Levesque, Nicole Walls, Matthew and Michael Stratton and several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta.

MANCHESTER

Burnham W. Ragon Jr. - age 69, of Country Club Road died Thursday November 28, 2002 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility at Gray Birch after a brief illness.

He was born in Augusta on August 16, 1933 the son of Burnham W. Sr. and Mollie (Hutchinson) Ragon.

Mr. Ragon was a 1951 Cony High School graduate. He subsequently graduated from the University of Maine in Orono in 1956 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, he was in the 5 year Pulp and Paper Management Program.

He was employed by Beloit Iron Works in Beloit, Wisc., Montreal, P.Q., and Vancouver, B.C.; he then worked for the Javelin Paper Co, in Burry, England.

He was a member of the Carabassett Planning Board. Bud enjoyed skiing and owned and operated the Shell Station at the base of Sugarloaf Mt. Other interests included sailing and golfing and was a member of the Augusta Country Club.

Survivors include his wife Sylvia (MacDonald) Ragon of Manchester.

Friends may visit Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant St. Augusta, where funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 am, Burial will follow at St Mary’s cemetery (Old Yard) in Augusta.

Pall Bearers will be Gren Condon, Bobby Luce, Gary Fuller, Stephen MacDonald Thomas MacDonald and James MacDonald.

Those who desire, may make donations in his memory to the Barbara Bush Wing Pediatric Center – Maine Medical Center – 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine – 04102.

SIDNEY

Mrs. Alice B. Reynolds, age 94, passed away January 25, 2003 at the home of her daughter Dr. Beatrice K. Reynolds, of Sidney. She was born in Kankakee, Illinois on November 9, 1908, the daughter of Charles H. and Sophia (Schultz) Mulholland and grand-daughter of German-Jewish immigrants Johann and Carolyn (Schumaker) Schultz of Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany.

The Schultz couple migrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1868, where they lived for six years, among other German immigrants from Mecklenburg and Prussia. Then they moved to Chabanse, south of Chicago, where they purchased a farm in Milks Grove Township area and attended the German Lutheran church there. Caroline (Schumaker) Schultz’s brother John Schumaker settled in Kankakee, while her brother Theodore Schumaker settled in Morris, Minnesota; her half-sister Mrs. Neuberg settled in Clifton, Illinois. Alice is also the grand-daughter of Irish Catholic immigrants Charles and Mary (O’Donnelly) Mulholland, who migrated to Kankakee from Dun Daulk, Ireland. Her father Charles Mulholland was one of the founders of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the first Irish Catholic Church in Kankakee.

Alice was christened at age 5 years at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kankakee. She graduated from Kankakee High School and attended Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College, at DeKalb; Farmington State Teachers College and Gorham State Teacher’s College in Maine. She and Walter W. Reynolds were married in Chicago, Illinois. They lived in Peoria, Illinois before moving to Sidney in 1942, when they bought the farm of Walter’s great-grandparents Thomas and Susanna (Battles) Reynolds. Alice taught elementary school in Illinois and in Sidney until the death of her husband in 1965. She attended the Second Baptist Church in Sidney and was a member of the Ladies Aid.

Alice was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Charles J. Mulholland and Raymond J. P. Mulholland, Sr., and sisters Carolyn Mulholland, Marcella Sullivan, Mildred Mulholland, Florence Williams, Leona Healy, Margareta Petersen, all of Illinois. Her husband, Walter W. Reynolds, son of William L. and Sarah P. (Hastings) Reynolds of Sidney, died at Portland on January 10, 1965.

She is survived by her daughters Dr. Beatrice K. Reynolds of Sidney and Mrs. Alicia A. Combes of Littleton, Colorado; her grandchildren Brian H. Combes, Wesley G. Combes, and Martha M. Fisher, all of Littleton, and great-grandson Cordell Combes. She is also survived by her nephews Richard K. Petersen of Alburqueque, New Mexico, Raymond Mulholland, Jr, of Kankakee; Calvin Peterson, of St. Petersburg, Florida and. several great-grand-nephews and grand-nieces in Illinois, Florida, New Mexico, California, Washington, and Arizona.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
