AUGUSTA

Edith Irene Safford – age 63, of Townsend Street, died November 3, 2002 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive after a long illness. She was born in Waldoboro, ME on Oct. 18, 1939 the daughter of Walter Black and Leoness (Marshall) Black.

Mrs. Safford was employed by Shop ‘N Save Supermarket on the Whitten Road in Augusta for 7 years. She was previously employed by Abbott’s Market in Chelsea for 10 years. She also worked for Healthtex in Gardiner for 7 years and for Mr. Market in Augusta for several years.

Edith attended Green Street United Methodist Church of Augusta. She was an active member of the Chateau Cushnoc community where she was a resident for the last five years.

Her husband, Charles A. Safford, died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her father, Walter Black, her mother, Leoness Black Lapierre and a brother, James A. Black, who died in 1999.

Surviving are three sons, Michael A. Gregoire of Augusta, Robert C. Gregoire of Whitefield and John E. Gregoire of Sidney; two daughters, Diana L. Proulx of Augusta and Donna M. McNally of Gardiner; five brothers, Walter E. Black and John H. Black, both of Manchester, Carl L. Litchfield of Manchester, NH, George A. Black of Belgrade and Stephen A. Black of Gardiner; three sisters, Bernice A. Molina of Key West, Fl, Alice L. French of Whitefield and Debra F. Black of Portland; 11 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday, Nov. 6th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Thursday. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Gardiner.

Togus

Kenneth L. Selburg ,SFC– 64 a retired career Army Recruiter and a veteran of over 36 years of service died Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Togus, after a long illness.

He was born in Peoria, Ill. March 11, 1938 the son of Charles Edward and Alice (Spencer) Selburg.

Mr. Selburg had been a career veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, he was a member of the American Legion of Maine and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include two sons: Patrick Selburg stationed at Great Lakes, Ill. with the U.S. Navy and Allan Selburg stationed in Giessen, Germany with the U.S. Army; a daughter Michelle Kobuszewski and her husband Brian of Ipswich, Mass. a brother Donald Selburg of Peoria, Ill. also a niece and a cousin. He was predeceased by a brother Robert Selburg.

Friends may visit Thursday morning from 9 to 10:45 at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. Committal prayers with full Military Honors will be offered at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road Augusta with the Catholic Chaplain at Togus Rev. Raymond Lagace O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow the services.

SIDNEY

Edward J. Sinclair – age 54 of Middle Rd., died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at his home in Sidney. He was born in Augusta on May 31, 1948 the son of Edward J. and Eugenia (Winiarski) Sinclair.

Mr. Sinclair was a 1966 graduate of Cony High School. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1977.

He was an accomplished professional known by many in the Maine pulp and paper industry and held positions at S.D. Warren in Westbrook, Lincoln Pulp and Paper in Lincoln, and Georgia Pacific in Woodland.

Mr. Sinclair was a communicant of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Waterville and was a lay member of Marian Movement of Priests.

He had a spirit for adventure and enjoyed mountain climbing, kayaking to ocean islands, and competitive sports. His life showed the deep love and commitment he held in his heart for God and his family.

Mr. Sinclair was pre-deceased by his father, Edward J. Sinclair in 1981.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Emilie (Everett) Sinclair of Sidney; his mother, Eugenia (Winiarski) Sinclair of Augusta; four sons, Michael J. Sinclair of Auburn, Andrew J. Sinclair and his wife Charlene of Rock Hill, SC, Stephen J. Sinclair of York, SC and Jimmy J. Sinclair of Vilseck, Germany; three daughters, 1st Lt. Sarah A. Sinclair of Vilseck, Germany, Mary Ann Sinclair of Clemson, SC and Teresa A. Sinclair of Sidney; two sisters, Kathleen Logue of Falmouth and Cynthia Parise of Gardiner; two grandchildren, Amber and John Sinclair; two aunts, a niece, a nephew and several cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 6-8 PM today at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. Burial will be in the spring.

Manchester

Harriet Julia Sweetland – age 102, of the Pond Road, died peacefully in her sleep after a pleasant Thanksgiving Day with her family. Harriet was born in Whitefield, Maine on May 27, 1900 the daughter of William and Ann (Williams) Grady. She married George P. Sweetland on May 3, 1922 and they moved to Manchester in 1943.

Harriet enjoyed her family and friends and the beauty of the seasons. She especially loved watching her great-grandchildren grow and play. She was involved in the Grange for 70 years, the Telephone Pioneers of America, Manchester Cooperative Extension, St. Mary’s Guild and was a founding member of the YNI Club. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church for many years.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband, George P. Sweetland; a son, William Sweetland; a daughter, Barbara Sylvester; a son-in-law, Robert F. Sylvester and her brothers: Ambrose, Arthur, William, Charles, John and Joseph Grady, and sisters: Edith Grady and Katherine Hersom Hayes.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Collier of Manchester; her grandchildren: Stephen J. Sylvester and David J. Sylvester of Manchester, William J. Sylvester and his wife Elfi of Monmouth, Robert J. Sylvester of Juneau, Alaska, Barbara J. Pellett and her husband Mark of Winthrop and Elizabeth J. Raph of Winthrop; and her great-grandchildren: Adam and Aurora Sylvester of Juneau, Alaska, Andrew Pellett of Winthrop, Sean Raph, Caitlin Raph and Patrick Raph of Winthrop; also numerous nieces, nieces, nephews and cousins with whom she enjoyed visiting.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday December 4, 2002 at 3 P.M. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Janet A. White – age 54 of Stevens Road died unexpectedly Sunday December 29, 2002 at Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was born in Houlton September 27, 1948 the daughter of Henry G. and Elizabeth (Rowe) White.

Ms White was employed by the State of Maine Department of Labor as an Economic Research Analyst in the Employment and Wages Program for over 10 years, she had been previously employed by the Bank of Maine as a Trust Officer for over 19 years.

She was a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a member and former Treasurer of Habitat for Humanity Southern Maine Chapter, a member of the Unitarian/Universalist Community Church of Augusta, a member of Fidelity Chapter # 32 Order of the Eastern Star, a member and Past Worthy Advisor of the Houlton Chapter of Rainbow Girls, a member of the Maine State Employees Association, and a member and present Secretary of the Augusta Kiwanis Club.

Janet was predeceased by her mother Elizabeth (Rowe) White. Survivors include her father Henry G. White of Houlton; two aunts, Greta and Ursula Levesque both of Oakfield; four cousins, also a special friend Ronald Harvey of Augusta and special kids: Joelle Drake, Joseph Drake, Ethan Drake, Eric Drake and Jared Harvey.

Friends may visit Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 from the Unitarian/Universalist Community Church, Winthrop Street, Augusta.

A Memorial service will be conducted Monday January 6 at 2 PM from Bowers Funeral Home 10 Water Street Houlton, Maine. Spring Burial will be in the family lot Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton.

Those who desire, may make donations to the Unitarian/Universalist Community Church,

AUGUSTA

Pauline A. Allen – age 69 of New England Rd., and formerly of Rockland, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Campus following a brief illness. She was born in Glenwood, ME on September 22, 1933 a daughter of George H. and Lilla (Dunlap) Allen.

Ms. Allen was a home maker for most of her life.

She was pre-deceased by her brother, Kenneth O. Allen, Sr.

Ms. Allen is survived by five sons, Richard Lord of Bowdoinham, Robert Lord and his wife Marie of Westbrook, David Lord of Lowell, MA, Jerry Lord and his wife Brenda of Boothbay Harbor and Jeffrey Lord and his wife Terry of Vassalboro; two daughters, Patricia Lord of St. Petersburg, FL and Cheryl Lord of Biddeford; a sister, Vivian Piper of Augusta; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Thursday from 10-11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM. Burial will be held in the spring in Kling Cemetery, West River Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Bertha M. Arbour – age 74 of 20 Willow Street and formerly of Burns Road, died Saturday, February 15, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus after a long Illness. She was born in Eagle Lake, ME on November 17, 1928 the daughter of Luke Parent and Edna (Clavette) Parent.

Mrs. Arbour received her G.E.D. from Cony High School in 1968.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Augusta Mental Health Institute for 30 years.

Mrs. Arbour was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Anne Society, Cushnoc Senior Citizens, Maine State Retirees Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Her husband, Joseph Gedeon Arbour, died on June 4, 1974. She was also preceded in death by a son, Paul J. Arbour and a grandson, Adam Stetson.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph Donald Arbour and Richard Lee Arbour, both of Augusta; three daughters, Wanita Thibodeau and her husband Serge of Oxford, Connie Letendre and her husband Roger of Enfield, CT and Diane A. Stetson and her husband Dane of Augusta; a brother, Leonard Parent of Hazelton, PA; seven sisters, Sylvia Gallagher, Eva Dion, Patricia Morgan, Norma Faucher and Thelma Morgan all of Augusta, Juanita Wilson of Gainesville, GA and Barbara Atkins of Chelsea; 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bertha also leaves her many friends at Kennebec Plaza and her pet Chihuahua, Luv.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 6-8 PM today at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 AM Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

WINTHROP

Etta J. Benedix – age 82 of Old Lewiston Rd., and formerly Augusta and Rumford, died Friday, February 14, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Campus following a brief illness. She was born in Lewiston on August 17, 1921 a twin daughter of Edward H. Benedix, Sr. and Katherine (Acheson) Benedix.

Ms. Benedix was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta for many years.

She was pre-deceased by her twin sister, Margaret Connors and three brothers, Robert Benedix, George Benedix and Edward H. Benedix, Jr.

Ms. Benedix is survived by two brothers, Richard Benedix of Dixfield and James Benedix of Litchfield; four sisters, Irene Webster of West Peru, Geraldine Cyr of Monroe, Madeline Fournier of South Rumford and Constance Gallant of Rumford and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Tuesday, February 18th from 9:30-10:30 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. Spring burial will be in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery, Rumford.

GARDINER

Ora M. Carkeet – age 92 of Brunswick Ave., and formerly of Weston St. in Augusta, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at Robinson’s Health Care Facility following a long illness. She was born in Black Lake, Canada on February 9, 1910 a daughter of Edward and Melvina (Charron) Jarvis.

Mrs. Carkeet was a home maker for most of her life and had also worked as a waitress at the Corner Store as well as working at several area banks.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Norman R. Carkeet and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Carkeet is survived by 2 sisters.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

AUGUSTA

Mary L. Crochere – age 73, of Washington Street, died February 25, 2003 with her family by her side. Her death occurred at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Mary was born in Windsorville, ME on January 20, 1930 the daughter of Henry Cookson and Jenny (Moody) Cookson. She was a graduate of Lewiston High School.

Mary operated the Circle C Thrift Shop in Augusta for 5 years. She was previously employed by Hazard Shoe Co, Hallowell Shoe Co., she worked as a Personal Care Assistant and was employed by White Cloud Laundry for several years.

Mary loved cooking, baking, animals, and helping people. She had a lot of faith in her doctors and nurses.

Her husband of 49 years, Norman J. Crochere, died in 1999. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Gordon Higgins and Roger Hasty, and a sister, Josephine Crocker.

Surviving is her fiancé, Keith O’Blenis of Augusta; three sons, Lewis W. Crochere and his wife Barbara of Augusta, Norman W. Crochere and his fiancé Paula Mains of Pownal and Donald L. Crochere and his fiancé Violet Knox of Coopers Mills; two daughters, Marie Groleau and her husband Albert of Augusta and Valida Tillson and her husband Walter of Windsor; a brother, Joseph Hasty of Pennsylvania, a sister, Ruth Nichols of Chelsea, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visiting hours are 6-8 PM Friday, Feb. 28th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will follow at 8:00 PM. Pastor Glen Peterson will officiate. Committal prayers will be offered 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 5th by Rev. Michael Gendreau in the chapel of Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
