AUGUSTA

Leonard F. Thibault – age 74 of Townsend St., died unexpectedly Monday, April 21, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus. He was born in Augusta on November 3, 1928 a son of Napoleon and Mabel (Lapointe) Thibault.

Mr. Thibault was a self employed welder and mason for most of his life.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving at the end of WW II.

Mr. Thibault was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3137 of Augusta.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Ronald Thibault; 2 brothers, Gabriel and Roland Thibault and 2 sisters, Priscilla Thibault and Dorothy Thibault Veilleux.

Mr. Thibault is survived by 2 sons, Robert and Gerald Thibault both of San Diego, CA; a grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held on Tuesday, April 29th at 11 AM in the Chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Mrs. Alice T. Mullen Canning – age 97, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2003 at her home at Granite Hill Estates.

Born Sept. 21, 1905 a native of Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of Joseph and Ellen (Shannon) Mullen, she was educated in Rhode Island Schools. She lived in Augusta and environs for more than 60 years. She worked with her husband Charles F. Canning Sr. in the founding of Pine State Tobacco and Candy Company in 1941, now called Pine State Trading Company.

She was active in the community, serving many organizations of St. Mary’s Church including serving as President of St Mary’s School’s P.T.A.; St Mary’s Literary Guild, St Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella and was a lifetime member of the Augusta Country Club.

Her four children and several grandchildren were graduated from St Mary’s School. She spent many winters in South Florida with her husband, Charles, who predeceased her in 1990 after 61 years of marriage.

Survivors include her daughters, Ellen Patricia Alberding (Russell) of Lake Bluff, Ill. and Mary Frances Knox (the late James) of Stuart, Florida; her sons: Charles F. Canning Jr., of Hallowell and Boothbay Harbor and John N. Canning (Chyllene) of Pemaquid and Isla Morada, Florida and 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church on Friday morning May 9, 2003 at 11:00 AM.

Family will hold visitation at St Mary’s Church 45 minutes prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund of St. Mary’s School C/O Sister Barbara Brennan, 45 Western Avenue, Augusta, Maine – 04330 or Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, MaineGeneral Medical Center, 150 Dresden Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345.

AUGUSTA

Leslie E. Mills – age 95 of Wyman St., died Friday, April 25, 2003 at Maine Veterans Home following a brief illness. He was born in West Pembroke on October 17, 1907 the son of Charles E. and Sadie (Frost) Mills.

Mr. Mills was a graduate of Pembroke High School and the New England Institute in Boston, MA.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant as a field commission in Borneo.

Mr. Mills had been employed by the Augusta School Department for 12 years. Prior to his work there, he had been employed as a funeral director by Plummer Funeral Home and Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Homes for many years.

He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a member of the Maine State Retirees and former member of the Maine Funeral Directors Association.

Mr. Mills was pre-deceased by his wife, Nunciata “Nancy” (Mandile) Mills; a half-sister, Marion McCart and a step-sister, Hazel Brown.

He is survived by 2 sons, Charles E. Mills of Morrill and Douglas D. Mills of Sidney; a half-sister, Inez Mills of Eastport; a step-sister, Eileen Bennett of Waltham, MA; 3 grandchildren, Trevor, Maggie and Mason Mills all of Morrill and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Following cremation, Leslie’s cremains will be scattered according to his wishes.

Those who desire may make donations in Mr. Mills name to the charity of your choice.

AUGUSTA

Joseph Omer R. Quirion – age 79, of Cross Hill Road, died April 28, 2003 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. He was born in Winslow, Maine on December 28, 1923 the son of Cleophas Quirion and Flossie (Poulin) Quirion.

Mr. Quirion was educated at Colburn Prep School and served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was owner and operator of Romeo’s Taxi in Augusta for 6 years. He was previously employed by Spencer Turbine in Windsor, CT for over 23 years. He also had owned and operated Quirion’s Taxi in Augusta, and had been employed by the Augusta Police Department for a time.

Mr. Quirion was a member the Catholic Community of St. Andrew’s. He was an avid pool player, enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Spencer Turbine Bowling League for several years.

Surviving is his wife, Jeannette Florence (Gagne) Mathieu Quirion of Augusta; a daughter, Lorraine Piteau and her husband Bobby of Augusta; a sister, Regina Rancourt of Waterville; four grandchildren: Karen Szabo and her husband Lutz, Michael Piteau and his wife Patricia, Monique Piteau and her fiancée Bob, and Robert Piteau, Jr.; five great-grandchildren: Michael Piteau, Jr., Lauren Piteau, Joseph Drapeau, Daniel Drapeau and Philip Szabo; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Quirion was predeceased by two brothers: Romeo and Donald Quirion.

Visiting hours are 5-8 PM Wednesday, April 30th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 AM Thursday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240.

AUGUSTA

Lillian E. Bisson, age 93, died April 29, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Graybirch Drive. born in Augusta, Maine on March 3, 1910, she was the youngest daughter of Michel and Victoria (Bonneau) Lambert, and attended St. Augustine School, Cony High School, and Gate’s Business College in Augusta.

On August 23, 1930, she married Gabriel Bisson, who died in April 1971. With her husband, she owned and operated a movie theater in Fairfield, Maine, from 1940 to 1950, and then worked with her husband in his tax accounting business.

Mrs. Bisson was a long-time member of St. Augustine Church, and was active in a number of community charities. She was also involved for many years in Democratic Party activities.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, Martin and Robert and two sisters, Aurore and Leonie.

Survivors include two grand-nephews, Andrew and Steven Leclair; a great-grandnephew, Matthew Leclair; several cousins and a number of good friends including Irma Chase and Judith Feinstein.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and above all for her sense of humor, which brought much laughter to those around her.

Visiting hours will be from 9:30 to 10:30 AM Tuesday May 6th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery.

AUGUSTA

Romeo Robert “Bob” Theberge – age 94 of Glenridge Dr., and formerly of Fourth Ave., died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge. He was born in Augusta on April 13, 1909 a son of Bruno and Leontine (Dutil) Theberge.

Mr. Theberge was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

He had been employed by Neil Kennedy Enterprises in Las Vegas for 12 years and previously worked in Boston managing apartments.

Mr. Theberge was pre-deceased by his first wife, Louise (Hamilton) Theberge; his second wife, Frieda (Lohstroh) Theberge; 2 brothers, Robutel and Roland Theberge and a half sister, Loretta Paradis.

He is survived by a son, Robert R. Theberge of Augusta; a daughter, Irma Louise Chase of Augusta; a half brother, Eugene Poulin of Bangor; four grandchildren, Tammy Theberge Bracco of Matawan, New Jersey, Debora Ezzy of Madawaska, David E. Chase of Windsor and Karen L. Parkman of Bavard, NC; 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 7th at 9 AM in St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Kenneth J. “Ken” Tondreau – age 46 of Mt. Vernon Rd. and seasonally of Pompano Beach, FL died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at his home. He was born in Augusta on February 2, 1957 a son of Robert A. and Lauristine M. (Grenier) Tondreau.

Mr. Tondreau was a graduate of Cony High School and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and Calvary Church in Pompano Beach, FL.

He had been employed by Tondreau and Son’s for over 10 years and had previously worked for the State of Maine and real estate for a short time.

Ken enjoyed going to flea markets, they were his passion, and watching the sunrises on the beach.

Mr. Tondreau was pre-deceased by his soul mate and partner, Mike Persico.

He is survived by his parents, Robert A. and Lauristine M. (Grenier) Tondreau of Augusta; a brother, Keith C. Tondreau and his wife Jeanne of Augusta; 2 sisters, Julie A. Kramer and her husband Clifton of Sidney and Tina M. Clary and her husband Howard of Augusta; several aunts and uncles, a niece, Katie Lynn Tondreau; 2 nephews, Devin J. Tondreau and Matthew J. Kramer; best friends and confidants, Danny Pomerleau, Gary Blouin, Richard Demos, Al Longstaff and Sandra Longstaff and many cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, 5 Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA

Josephine M. Brown – age 77 of Lincoln St., died Friday, May 9, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, following a long illness. She was born in Augusta on December 13, 1925 a daughter of Joseph and Alice (Thibault) Price.

Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Augusta.

She was a waitress at the Corner Restaurant for several years and previously worked at the Airport Restaurant for many years.

Mrs. Brown was pre-deceased by her 4 brothers, Henry, Richard and Eugene Ellis and Rodney Price and a sister, Thelma Poulin.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ernest F. Brown of Augusta; two daughters, Dixie Davis and her husband John of Augusta and Linda Bailey and her husband Bud of North Whitefield; a sister, Myrtle Brown of Augusta; an aunt, Thelma Grady of Oakland; 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a long time friend, Ernie Rice of Belgrade.

Relatives and friends may visit Monday, May 12th from 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A committal service will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta on a date to be announced in Tuesday’s Kennebec Journal.

AUGUSTA

Mildred S. “Ma” Gammon – age 90, of Gray Birch Drive and formerly of Portland, died May 20, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive after a brief illness. She was born in Jonesport, Maine on August 10, 1912 the daughter of Perley Hoffses and Harriet (Alley) Hoffses.

Mrs. Gammon was a graduate of Deering High School in the class of 1930.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Williams Health Care Facility as a nurse for several years. She was previously employed for 20 years as a nurse at the Veterans Hospital at Togus, Maine.

Mrs. Gammon was a member of the Augusta Baptist Church.

Her husband, Donald P. Gammon, died on May 16, 1991. She was also predeceased by two brothers, James and Almar Hoffses and two sisters, Edith Dobbins and Annie Alley.

Surviving is a son, David R. Gammon and his wife Sharon Gammon of Minot; a daughter, Donna Valente and her husband Arthur “David” Valente of Augusta; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Thursday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A funeral service will be held 10 AM Friday May 23rd at Augusta Baptist Church. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to: Augusta Baptist Church, 2567 North Belfast Avenue, Augusta, ME 04330.
