AUGUSTA

Marie Leona O’Clair – age 89, of Glenridge Drive, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on May 15, 1914 the daughter of Henry “Babe” Cote and Helen (Violette) Cote.

Mrs. O’Clair was educated in Augusta schools. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Taylor Shoe Co. for several years. She was previously employed by Pete’s Taxi, Bates Manufacturing Co., and Connie’s Lunch on Water St. in Augusta.

Mrs. O’Clair was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a former member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary.

Her husband, Walter O’Clair, died on April 1, 1979. She was also predeceased by four brothers: Sylvio Cote, Robert Cote, Roger Cote and Ronald Cote; and a sister, Geneva Lachance.

Surviving are three sons: Walter C. O’Clair and his wife Debbie of Manchester, NH, Roger R. O’Clair and his wife Theresa of Augusta and James P. O’Clair and his wife Gail of Castlebury, FL; two daughters: Patricia Tabor of Nashua, NH and Geraldine “Gerry” Toulouse of Manchester, NH; one sister, Constance Gregoire of Augusta; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Rev. Richard St. Cyr, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA

Juliette T. Nichols – age 74, of Gray Birch Drive, died unexpectedly April 3, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Augusta, Maine on June 2, 1928 the daughter of Delphis G. Poulin and Marie Louise (Couture) Poulin.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Nichols was employed by MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Graybirch Drive & Glenridge Drive, overlapped by employment with the Augusta School Department, for a combined total of 20 years. Julie had also volunteered her time and talent on the keyboard entertaining patients at the Gray Birch and Glenridge nursing homes.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2 Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her parents; four brothers: Armand, Raymond, Robert and Roger Poulin; as well as four sisters: Leontine Rancourt, Fernande Douin, Bernadette Gagne and Violet Latno.

Surviving is a son, James Albert Nichols of Augusta; three daughters: Jayne Elizabeth Cummings and her husband Bruce of Augusta, Cynthia Louise Roderick and her husband Roger of S. Chatham, MA and Louise Nichols-Ashby and her husband Bert of China; two brothers: Adrian “Pop” Poulin of Manchester and Gerard Poulin of Augusta; four sisters: Alice Lettre, Simone Dumont and Lucille Dostie all of Augusta and Germaine Morrissette of China; seven grandchildren: Bruce, Amy, Justine, Leah, Daniel, Ryan and Nicholas; her godson Larry Poulin; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Monday, April 7th at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2, Capital Street Ext., Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA

Olivine E. Rouleau – age 99, of Northern Avenue, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a brief illness. She was born in Sawyerville, P.Q., Canada on March 20, 1904 the daughter of Felix Dumont and Mary (Golin) Dumont.

Besides raising a family of five children, Mrs. Rouleau was employed by the Augusta State Hospital for over 10 years. She was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Company – Edwards Division for many years.

Mrs. Rouleau was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens, L’Union St. Jean Baptiste, the Ladies of St. Anne Society, where she served as vice-president for many years and the Charismatic Prayer Community at St. Paul Center where she volunteer for 27 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adelbert Rouleau, on May 29, 1980, as well as her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Gerard J. Rouleau and his wife Yvette and Robert J. Rouleau and his wife Anita, all of Augusta; three daughters, Sister Therese Rouleau, F.C.S.C.J. of Attleboro, Mass., Arlene Bilodeau and her husband Victor of Monmouth and Jeannette Beaulieu and her husband Raymond of Augusta; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Thursday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where members of the Ladies of St. Anne Society are asked to meet at 3 PM Thursday to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

Donations may be made to either: St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, 5 Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330 or the charity of your choice.

BELGRADE

Rene Beaudoin – age 79, of Route 135, died April 4, 2003 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on February 26, 1924 the son of Ernest Beaudoin and Emilie Anna (Breton) Beaudoin.

Mr. Beaudoin served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Prior to his retirement in 1984, he was employed by Fleet Bank for 11 years. Rene was previously employed by St. Augustine Catholic Church for 13 years and by Arlene’s Bakery for 10 years.

Mr. Beaudoin was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church of Augusta, a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens and the American Association of Retired Persons.

His wife, Bertha (Dube) Beaudoin, died in 1994. He was also predeceased by his parents; two daughters, Ruth Beaudoin and Julie Dow; two sisters: Cecile Laroche and Therese Robitaille as well as his beloved companion, Constance Dutil, who died this year.

Surviving are four sons: Robert Beaudoin of Eastbrook, Paul Beaudoin of Hanford, CA, David Beaudoin of Weeks Mills and Michael Beaudoin of Augusta; seven daughters: Claire Shepherd of Belgrade, Sr. Diane Beaudoin of the Sisters of Charity in St. Hyacinthe, Canada, Claudette Merchant of Wilton, Anita Carvell of Ashville, NC, Jeanne Potelle of Milford, NH, Anne Allison of Jay and Maria Trow of Augusta; two sisters: Alma Morin of Lewiston and Lorette Morin of Augusta; 20 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday, April 9th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Thursday April 10th at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240 or American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

PALM HARBOR, FL

Robert F. Stewart – age 84, long time Maine resident and businessman, died Sunday, April 6, 2003 in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was born in Cheltenham, PA and moved to Winthrop, ME where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Maine, where he met Florence Farnham and graduated with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering in June 1940.

He and Florence were married in July 1941, shortly before he was shipped overseas to participate in World War II. He participated in the North African Campaign and the Invasion of Italy at Anzio. Bob remained in the Army for 6 years and rose to the rank to Major and was honorably discharged in 1946.

He and Flo settled in the Lewiston-Auburn area while he worked in different capacities at Bonafide Mills in Lisbon. While in the area, he and Flo raised two sons, Robert and Lee. Later he moved to Lisbon and, after 30 years in manufacturing, retired and began a successful career in the insurance business. For a period of time he and Florence owned their own motel in Brewer. After her death, he sold the business and began working for the Lafayette Hotel chain.

Since 1993, Bob as wintered in Oldsmar, FL, returning each summer to lend a hand at Lafayette's Oceanside Resort at Wells Beach.

He is survived by a sister, Muriel “Tooie” Tatham Craven of Woodbury, NJ; a brother, Don of Geneva, NY; two sons, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He will be interred at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, ME in a private graveside ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to his church: The Church of Jesus Christ (designated as “Fast Offering in memory of Robert F. Stewart”) and addressed to Palm Harbor Ward, Attn: Bishop Kimball, 5318 Enclave Drive, Oldsmar, FL, 34677. (100% of any donation designated to Fast Offering goes to the needy in and outside of the church).

WINTHROP

J. Robert A. Dugal Jr. – 60 of Carlton Pond Rd., died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Maine Medical Center, Portland. Mr. Dugal was born in Waterville April 19, 1942 the son of J.R. Ayre Dugal, Sr. and Frances Olive (Veilleux) Dugal.

Mr. Dugal was a graduate of Winslow High School in 1960 and Southern Maine Technical School in 1962, he retired after 40 years of service for the Maine Department of Transportation as a Technician/Inspector.

He was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Winthrop, he was a Navy Veteran of the Viet Nam War as a Seabee, a member of the MacCrillis-Rousseau V.F.W. Post of Winslow, the Alfred Maxwell Post American Legion of Winthrop, the Father McGowan Council Knights of Columbus, Abnaki Assembly # 346 – 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and the Maine State Employees Association where he served as Shop Steward and was a member of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Dugal enjoyed spending time with his family and taking his dogs for a ride on his “John Deere” tractor. He also enjoyed working with food, the computer, flower gardening and rock walls and was very generous with his time and resources.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Jane (Pelletier) Dugal of Winthrop; a daughter: Cheryl Ann Dugal of Augusta; a son John-Paul R. Dugal and his wife Kimberly of Winthrop; four brothers: Daniel Dugal and his wife Pat of Illinois; Gerald Dugal and his wife Sandra of Durham, Me.; Bernard Dugal and his significant other Janet of Thorndike and Conrad Dugal and his wife Lynn of Augusta; three sisters: Christine Wendler and her husband Chuck of Iowa; Pauline Curry and her husband Rick of Old Orchard Beach and Jeannine Robinson and her husband John of Waterboro; a special uncle and aunt and Godparents, Benedict and Marie Perry of Vassalboro also several other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 11 from St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Officers and members of Abnaki Assembly # 346 – 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Full Regalia are to meet at 5:30 at the Funeral Home to prepare for the posting of the Guard and the Ritual of the Dead and the presentation of the Memorial Chalice.

Those who desire may make donations to the Pine Tree Camp for the Handicapped, P.O. Box 518, Bath, Maine – 04350 or to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate 343 Gorham Road. South Portland – 04106.

RANDOLPH

Rose H. Demers – age 94 of Skyline Ct., and formerly of Kendall St., Augusta, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. She was born in St. George de Beauce, Canada on June 1, 1908 a daughter of Joseph and Georgianna (Poulin) Rodrigue.

Mrs. Demers was a home maker for most of her life but did work for several years at Bates Mfg. Co., Edwards Division.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta, the Ladies of St. Anne Society, Cushnoc Senior Citizens and the Happy Family Senior Citizens and was a former long time member of the St. Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella.

Mrs. Demers was pre-deceased by her husband, Armand Demers; four brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Rita Lalemand of Randolph and Joyce Gagne of Belgrade; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where members of the Ladies of St. Anne Society are asked to meet at 3 PM Sunday to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will be later this spring in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Augusta

Joseph M. “Led” Betit 85 of Old Belgrade Road, died Saturday, April 12, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center, Togus after brief illness. He was born in Augusta January 30, 1918 the son of Cyprien and Elizabeth (Theriault) Betit.

Mr. Betit attended public schools in Mexico, Rumford and Augusta.

He was a W.W. II Army veteran serving as an artilleryman during the Battle of the Bulge.

Until recently, Mr. Betit was employed by Pine Tree Waste, Riverside Disposal and the Valley Company. From 1945 until 1967, he worked as an aide at the VA Center. For most of his working life he also owned and operated J.M. Betit Sani-Van Service in Augusta. In 1986, he was named to the Waste age magazine’s Hall of Fame. Many years ago, he also received the Augusta Area Chamber of Commerce’s President Award.

Until he was 82, Mr. Betit skied weekly at Sugarloaf. Right up to his illness, he was also an avid roller skater and swimmer.

Known for his great sense of humor Mr. Betit collected and traded jokes as a lifelong hobby.

His wife Jeannette (Violette) Betit died in 1990.

Survivors include three sons: Paul G. Betit and his wife Deborah of Brunswick, Edmond J. Betit and his companion Deborah Marienhoff of West Gardiner and David J. Betit of Augusta; a daughter Elizabeth Betit of Hallowell; His companion Muriel Audet of Gardiner, two brothers: Gabriel Betit of Augusta, Lionel Betit of Bingham and two sisters: Julienne Coulombe of Brunswick and Gertrude Virgin of Augusta; six grandchildren one great-grandchild also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no viewing hours or visitation, however; there will be a gathering of family and friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday at the Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 11 from St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery Civic Center Drive, Augusta at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Senior Spectrum – c/o Cohen Community Center, Town Farm Road, Hallowell, Maine – 04347.

ROCKLAND

Donald Q. Stuart – age 68, of Camden Street, and formerly of 33 Linwood Avenue, Augusta, died April 17, 2003 at Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport, after a brief illness. He was born in Gray, Maine on December 5, 1934 the son of the late F. Lawrence Stuart and Gertrude (Quinby) Stuart.

Mr. Stuart was a graduate of Madison High School.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the State of Maine in various departments in Augusta for a total of 28 years.

Surviving is a step-mother, Gertrude C. Stuart of Augusta; sister, Nancy Lou Heath and her husband Ed of Augusta; two aunts, Jane M. Lancaster of South Portland and Dorothy Davis of Providence, RI; two nephews: Michael S. Heath and his wife Pauline of South China and David E. Heath of Augusta; and several cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A service celebrating Donald’s life will be offered 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 22nd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. After cremation, burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
