CHELSEA
Roland H. Dunbar – age 65, of River Road, died April 18, 2003 at the Thayer Unit of MaineGeneral Medical Center, Waterville following a long illness. He was born James Arthur McNamara in Gardiner, Maine on March 15, 1938. He became the son of Harold H. Dunbar and Nellie M. (Jeddry) Dunbar.
Roland was self employed starting in 1982 as Roland’s Auto Repair in Augusta and later as Roland’s Tire in Chelsea. He was previously employed by the Augusta Sanitary District, Dick Condon Construction, Harold Warren Construction, Shostak Construction and Williams Construction.
Roland was an avid snowmobile and ATV rider who preferred the Jackman area. He often rode there with his sons.
Surviving are two sons: Timothy R. Dunbar of Chelsea and Thomas J. Dunbar and his wife Laurie of Richmond; his life partner, Alethia Warren of Chelsea; and a granddaughter, Krystal Devine of Augusta.
Visiting hours are 7-9 PM Sunday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00 pm. Burial will be later this spring. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240.
Augusta
Lucy Iva (Dyer) Denham – 71, of Hospital Street died Friday morning April 18 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Augusta, Maine on August 24, 1931 the daughter of Carl S. and Vera C. (Dyer) Dyer.
Mrs. Denham graduated from Cony High School, and married Harold Denham on 10/11/1951. She had been employed at the Augusta State Hospital for several years. She was an avid gardener & known locally as the “Flower Lady” selling perennials on her roadside stand in Augusta. She was a past communicant of the Plains Baptist Church in Litchfield, a Bible School Teacher at Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell, and a Den Mother in a Hallowell Cub Scout Pack.
Lucy was the founder of the Dr. William Dyer Reunion Association and a direct descendant of the Mayflower, very active in the DAR, Cobbosseeconte Grange, Emblem Club of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Rebecca’s Lodge, former member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Maine State Employees Association.
Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Harold R. Denham, of Augusta; four sons: Carl Richard “Sonny” Denham and his fiancée Patricia White of Midland,Texas, Carroll R. “Denny” Denham and his wife Midge of Gray, Gene R. Denham of Winthrop and Dwight R. Denham and his wife Dorene of Gardiner; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lela Herling of Gardiner, a brother-in-law, Gerard
C. Simard and family; Arthur “Reg” Denham and his wife Elaine and family, Janie Greenleaf and her husband Tim and family, Jackie Marsella and her husband Paul and family, Duane Furlong and wife Susan also several nieces and nephews and special friends in Bingo and in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her sister, Janice Simard, a grandson, Adam, and a brother-in-law, Herb Herling.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1 P.M. today at the Furlong lot in Litchfield Plains Cemetery, Litchfield.
AUGUSTA
Fernande “Fannie” Pouliotte – age 92, of 30 Franklin Street, died April 23, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Graybirch Drive after a long illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on Sept. 18, 1910 the daughter of Joseph Morrissette and Rose (Lagueux) Morrissette.
Mrs. Pouliotte was educated in Augusta schools and was employed by Hazzard Shoe Company for many years. She was previously employed by Edwards Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Pouliotte was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Cushnoc Senior Citizens and Ladies of St. Anne Society.
Her husband, Robert Edouard Pouliotte, died on Dec. 10, 1964. She was also predeceased by three brothers: Laurier, Wilfred and Roland Morrissette; and two sisters: Yvette Pare and Loretta Morrissette.
Surviving is a son, Paul Pouliotte and his wife Patricia of Augusta; a daughter, Constance “Connie” Burton of Augusta; three sisters, Adrienne Plamondon, Juliette Grondin and Gloria Morrissette, all of Augusta; four grandchildren: Jennifer & Todd Pouliotte and Corey and Ashley Burton; one great-grandchild, Dylan Burton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Friday April 25th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, where members of the Ladies of St. Anne Society are asked to meet at 3:00 PM to offer a prayer service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 AM Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Augustine cemetery at a later date.

Farmingdale
Charlotte MacPhelemy – age 72, of 10 Michael Street passed away April 20, 2003 at home with her family by her side after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Pittston on November 22, 1930 the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Brown) Allen.
Charlotte’s passing is that of an innate soul that has touched the lives of all who have met and known her. She was an everyday participant of life with a passion for gardening and cooking that was rivaled only by an equal passion for loving, caring and nurturing of others. One of the biggest joys of her life, was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Charlotte was a true conveyer of wisdom, common sense and reason for which we all are forever grateful. God had blessed her and in turn, her time on earth has truly blessed us all.
“Sis” as she was fondly known by many, will always be remembered for her empathy and compassion while nurturing others.
She had been employed at the Lancey House in Pittsfield, the Augusta House, Hotel North and the Pioneer House all of Augusta for several years. She had also been employed in Accounts and Control by the State of Maine for a number of years.
She was predeceased by her husband George F. MacPhelemy Jr. on April 24, 1983.
Survivors include her daughter Sandra Rodrigue of Farmingdale and a son Robert Allen of Naples. Charlotte will be sadly missed by her brothers, sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.
At her request there will be no hours of visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Wednesday April 30, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallowell, followed by burial in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Flowers should be sent to the funeral home on Tuesday April 29th or memorial donations may be made to Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, MaineGeneral Medical Center, 150 Dresden Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345.
Augusta
Rosario C. Quirion – 85, of Townsend Road, died Tuesday April 22, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta after a long illness. He died peacefully in his sleep with his wife and daughter at his side.
He was born in Augusta on May 24, 1917 the son of Charles and Victoria (Poulin) Quirion.
Mr. Quirion was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.
He had been employed for over 36 years at Bates Manufacturing Co., Edwards Division, and previously worked on his father’s farm from 1933 to 1940.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Valeda (Poulin) Quirion of Augusta, a daughter, Jeanne M. Quirion of Augusta; two sisters: Florence Busque and her husband Lionel and Merilda Bilodeau and her husband Albert all of Augusta; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rosario was predeceased by a sister Marie Blanche Dulac and a brother Lionel Quirion.
Visiting hours are 7-9 P.M. Thursday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 AM Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.
AUGUSTA
Liselotte L. “Lilo” Pushard – age 76, of South Belfast Avenue, died Sunday April 20, 2003 at Maine Medical Center, Portland after a long Illness. She was born in Manheim, Germany on November 7, 1926 the daughter of Paul Neubeck and Luise (Emmerling) Neubeck.
Mrs. Pushard was employed by R.P. Hazzard Shoe Company for three years. She was previously employed by Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company for 5 years and by Cottles Shop ‘N Save for 16 years, she had been an Avon Lady for many years.
Lilo will be dearly missed by her husband and sons. She was a communicant of the Catholic Community of St. Andrew. She was a member of the German American Club and gave to American Organizations especially the Children’s Cancer Fund. She dearly loved her little Kitty.
Surviving is her husband of 52 years, Lawrence M. Pushard of Augusta; two sons, Kurt A. Pushard of Augusta and Stephen K. Pushard and his fiancee Dawn Mellows of Augusta; two grandchildren: Heather Mitchell and Dylan Mitchell. She was predeceased by a daughter Karin Ann Pushard 9/16/1962.
There will be no public visiting hours. Funeral prayers will be offered at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
HALLOWELL
Margaret Driggs Vaughan, 85, of Hallowell died of cancer on April 24, 2003. A Connecticut Yankee, Margaret was born November 21, 1917 in New York City and grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut; she moved to Elm Hill Dairy Farm in Hallowell in 1941 as a new bride. A proud graduate of Westover School, Margaret was a life-long learner. Long a liberal thinker and activist, she supported the movements for civil rights, peace, civil liberties and social justice. Family planning and women’s issues were legacies she carried forward from her own mother’s work. She served on the boards of directors of many organizations; among her favorites were the Hubbard Free Library and Row House in Hallowell. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames, a regent to George Mason’s Gunston Hall in Virginia and the representative from Maine to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union, the owners since 1862 of George Washington’s home on the Potomac. These honors and responsibilities took her to Washington, DC annually for twenty years. An early member and supporter of The Natural Resources Council Board, Margaret was an avid conservationist as well as an enthusiastic and knowledgeable organic gardener. Travel was one of her greatest pleasures; she spent many hours preparing, often attending classes to learn some of a country’s language and history before the trip. These trips often enhanced her extensive culinary expertise and all benefited when she entertained.
Margaret was the widow of William Loring Vaughan, whose family settled in Hallowell in the late 18th century. Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her four children, May Loring Vaughan of Washington, DC and Hallowell, Sally and her husband Terry Eagle of Carpinteria, CA, Cecily Vaughan of Prides Crossing, MA, and a son Ted Vaughan and wife Carolyn of Manheim, PA. Margaret leaves eight well-loved grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one more expected in June. Over the years Margaret cherished her many pets: two horses, eighteen dogs and countless Siamese, Maine Coon and Money cats.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 3rd at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 69 Winthrop Street, in Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret requested that memorial contributions may be made to the Hubbard Free Library, 115 Second Street, Hallowell, ME 04347 or Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley 150 Dresden Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345.
AUGUSTA
Leonard F. Thibault – age 74 of Townsend St., died unexpectedly Monday, April 21, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus. He was born in Augusta on November 3, 1928 a son of Napoleon and Mabel (Lapointe) Thibault.
Mr. Thibault was a self employed welder and mason for most of his life.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving at the end of WW II.
Mr. Thibault was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3137 of Augusta.
He was pre-deceased by a son, Ronald Thibault; 2 brothers, Gabriel and Roland Thibault and 2 sisters, Priscilla Thibault and Dorothy Thibault Veilleux.
Mr. Thibault is survived by 2 sons, Robert and Gerald Thibault both of San Diego, CA; a grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held on Tuesday, April 29th at 11 AM in the Chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
AUGUSTA
Mrs. Alice T. Mullen Canning – age 97, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2003 at her home at Granite Hill Estates.
Born Sept. 21, 1905 a native of Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of Joseph and Ellen (Shannon) Mullen, she was educated in Rhode Island Schools. She lived in Augusta and environs for more than 60 years. She worked with her husband Charles F. Canning Sr. in the founding of Pine State Tobacco and Candy Company in 1941, now called Pine State Trading Company.
She was active in the community, serving many organizations of St. Mary’s Church including serving as President of St Mary’s School’s P.T.A.; St Mary’s Literary Guild, St Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella and was a lifetime member of the Augusta Country Club.
Her four children and several grandchildren were graduated from St Mary’s School. She spent many winters in South Florida with her husband, Charles, who predeceased her in 1990 after 61 years of marriage.
Survivors include her daughters, Ellen Patricia Alberding (Russell) of Lake Bluff, Ill. and Mary Frances Knox (the late James) of Stuart, Florida; her sons: Charles F. Canning Jr., of Hallowell and Boothbay Harbor and John N. Canning (Chyllene) of Pemaquid and Isla Morada, Florida and 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church on Friday morning May 9, 2003 at 11:00 AM.
Family will hold visitation at St Mary’s Church 45 minutes prior to the services.

AUGUSTA
Leslie E. Mills – age 95 of Wyman St., died Friday, April 25, 2003 at Maine Veterans Home following a brief illness. He was born in West Pembroke on October 17, 1907 the son of Charles E. and Sadie (Frost) Mills.
Mr. Mills was a graduate of Pembroke High School and the New England Institute in Boston, MA.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant as a field commission in Borneo.
Mr. Mills had been employed by the Augusta School Department for 12 years. Prior to his work there, he had been employed as a funeral director by Plummer Funeral Home and Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Homes for many years.
He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a member of the Maine State Retirees and former member of the Maine Funeral Directors Association.
Mr. Mills was pre-deceased by his wife, Nunciata “Nancy” (Mandile) Mills; a half-sister, Marion McCart and a step-sister, Hazel Brown.
He is survived by 2 sons, Charles E. Mills of Morrill and Douglas D. Mills of Sidney; a half-sister, Inez Mills of Eastport; a step-sister, Eileen Bennett of Waltham, MA; 3 grandchildren, Trevor, Maggie and Mason Mills all of Morrill and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Following cremation, Leslie’s cremains will be scattered according to his wishes.
