Charles P. Shaw
2002-06-27

Charles Preston Shaw, 23, formerly known as Timothy Sewall, died Sunday, June 23 in Hallowell.

Born June 12, 1979 in Portland, he was the son of Elaine Preston Sewall and Michael Shaw.

Mr. Shaw grew up in Boothbay and attended local schools, graduating with honors from Boothbay Region High School in 1997, where he was the vice-president of his senior class. He then attended Rochester Institute of Technology in New York to pursue his love of photography. He was continuing his studies at the Creative Photograph Art Center of Maine in Lewiston where he excelled, eventually having one of his photographs published.

He enjoyed high school sports, his favorites being basketball and baseball.

In the last few years of his life he struggled and persevered with chronic mental illness, never letting it stop him from pursuing his goals.

He was caring, kind and gentle, loyal and loved by all his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his father Michael K. Shaw.

Survivors include his mother, Elaine Sewall of Hallowell; his grandmothers, Margaret Preston of Somerville, Mass. and Elnora Shaw of Boothbay; uncles, Stephen Preston of Winchester, Mass., Edward Shaw of Boothbay Harbor and William Shaw of New Hampshire; aunts, Joanna Cirame of Arlington, Mass., Patricia Cedrone of Medford, Mass., Sandra Mullen of Boothbay, Lois Nichols of Manchester, Roberta Shaw/Roberge of Waterville/Oak-land, Kathy Stevens of Albien and Wendy Janderbaur of New Hampshire; and many cousins.

A mass will be held 1 p.m., Friday, June 28 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor.

A reception will be held in the Parish Hall following the service.

Contributions can be made to the National Association of Mental Illness Maine, P.O. Box 5120, Augusta, ME 04332.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lily T. Sherman
2002-10-17

Lily Turner Sherman, 92, of Saco, died Tuesday, October 15 at St. Andre Healthcare Facility in Biddeford.

Born on June 25, 1910 in Rochdale, England, she was a daughter of Bruce and Fanny Butterworth Turner. In 1927 she graduated from Worcester High School in Worcester, Mass. and in 1931 graduated from Teacher's College in Worcester, Mass.

Mrs. Sherman was employed as a social worker for the Worcester Department of Public Welfare for several years until 1936. She then worked as a social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare, retiring in 1971. She loved to travel.

Later in life she lived with her nephew in Edgecomb and Washington for several years. She also was a resident of Hodgdon Green in Damariscotta.

She was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell Sherman, on March 24, 1977 and her sister, May T. Orpin, in 1989.

Survivors include one niece, Elizabeth Hurtubise of Saco; and one nephew, Richard Orpin of Washington.

Private services will be held.

Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home of Saco.

Laurel Sherman
2002-07-18

Laurel Sherman, creator and owner of Wicked Wild Maine Preserves, passed away at Maine Medical Center on June 1 after a short illness.

Born in Weymouth, Mass., she went to high school in Scituate High, then transferred to Wiscasset in her junior year where she graduated. While at Scituate, she was an accomplished musician, playing in many of the local marching bands and orchestras.

In addition, she became the head chef at many of the fine dining establishments in Boothbay Harbor and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and ultimately took her cooking skills and talents and established the Wicked Wild Maine Preserve Company making a variety of jams and award-winning mustards. Her most famous being her Run for Water Mustard which won second prize in the "Mustard Mania 95" sponsored by Food Distribution Magazine along with other local awards. She was talented in other areas as well, crafting beautiful hooked rugs and creating handmade cards. She loved the outdoors and animals.

Mrs. Sherman was predeceased by her mother, Marjory McGregor Sherman; her father, Merle Campbell Sherman; and her brother, Stuart Bowles Sherman.

Survivors include one brother, Ted McGregor Sherman; one daughter, Tori Elizabeth McGregor; and grandchildren Alex and Duncan McGregor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SWEETSER, 75 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, ME 04011, c/o Jeff Gilman. SWEETSER provides a variety of services to individuals needing special care or assistance in the mental health or physical disability areas.

Arrangements were made by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A graveside service will be held at the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay on Saturday, July 20 at 11 a.m.

Roger W. Sherman
2002-03-28

Roger William Sherman, 89, of Edgecomb, died Monday, March 25 at his home.

Born January 25, 1913 in Newcastle, he was a son of Fred. L. and Lena L. (Cochran) Sherman.

He attended Beech Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse in Newcastle, and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1929.

Mr. Sherman was employed by Lewiston Steam Plant, which was part of Central Maine Power Company, before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. While in the Army, he attended Sam Houston College in Texas.

On June 7, 1947, he married Murlletta J. McKay, and lived in Augusta from 1952 to 1988. Mrs. Sherman passed away on November 16, 1987. In 1988, Mr. Sherman moved to Edgecomb and resided in the family house.

A member of the CMP Old Timers Club, Mr. Sherman retired after 38 years at CMP as Assistant Superintendent of Hydro.

He enjoyed recreational fishing and gardening.

Survivors include one son, Hugh A. Sherman and his wife Penelope S. of Edgecomb; one brother, Paul Sherman of Newcastle and Stuart, Fla.; one sister, Christine Nelson of Bridgewater, N.J.; four nephews, Paul Sherman Jr. of Damariscotta, Peter Sherman of Boothbay, Peter Nelson of Long Island and Robert Nelson of Berkeley, Calif.

Visiting hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 29 at Highland cemetery in Edgecomb.

Memorial donations may be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, c/o Development Office, 42 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Paul L. Sherman Sr.
2002-11-28

Paul Leslie Sherman Sr., 87, passed away on October 25 at the Water's Edge Nursing Home in Palm City, Florida.

Born in Newcastle on January 22, 1915, he was a son of Fred Leslie and Lena Lily (Cochran) Sherman. He attended Beech Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse in Newcastle and graduated from Lincoln Academy June 19, 1931, at the age of 16.

Mr. Sherman grew up on the family farm in Newcastle and dis-played an early talent for building and mechanics that included mak-ing some of his own tools. He even constructed a violin from scratch from plans he purchased from Sears Roebuck. He worked at the Bath Iron Works during World War II. From a 1928 Chevrolet he built a tractor and a sawmill from an early Saxon car. He was an accomplished finish carpenter and built and renovated many fine homes during his career.

Mr. Sherman enjoyed playing the violin, banjo, and piano and always kept at least one vegetable garden.

He was predeceased by a son, William in 1981, and by a brother, Roger in 2002.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Winifred Mary (Poole) Sher-man; a sister, Christine Lena Nel-son of Bridgewater, N.J.; a son, Paul Leslie Sherman, Jr., and his wife, Cynthia (Palmer) Sherman; a son, Peter Michael Sherman; two grandchildren, William Mannasseh Sherman and Devon Leslie Sher-man; and three nephews, Hugh Al-den Sherman of Edgecomb, Peter Nelson of Long Island, New York, and Robert Nelson of Berkeley, California.

A funeral service will be held in Wiscasset in the spring of 2003.

Raymond O. Sherman
2002-08-29

Raymond Oscar Sherman, age 84, of Fountain Valley, California, formerly of Blanchardville, died Saturday, June 15 at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital in California.

Born May 17, 1918 in Boothbay, he was the son of Raymond and Clara (Spinney) Sherman. They lived in Boothbay for some time, and then moved to Portland, where Mr. Sherman graduated from Deering High School in 1937.

While at Deering, he was an avid football player, and also made the State of Maine record Javelin throw, a record that held for many years to follow.

He was a World War II veteran, having enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1941. He was serving aboard the West Virginia when it was bombed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Mr. Sherman was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as a Platoon Sergeant in the 2nd Armored Amphibian Battalion during the battle at Saipan. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for an injury received at Saipan. He later served during the battle of Iwo Jima.

On March 21, 1944, he married Marian Erickson. He worked for Gisholt/Giddings and Lewis as a service engineer from 1951 until his retirement in 1982.

Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Richard Lee Sherman; five brothers, Kilburn, Frank, John, Walter and Merle Sherman; and three sisters, Julia Lewis, Dora Grover and Mable Sherman.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Sherman of Fountain Valley, Calif.; four children, Ray (Melissa) Sherman of Indian Springs, Ohio, Judy (Greg) Brookins of Blanchardville, Nancy (Don) Hendrickson of Blanchardville, and Patty (Rich) Ellison of Rowland Heights, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Laura Sherman of Bath, Maine; one brother, Al Sherman of Boothbay Harbor; and many nieces and nephews.

Private family services were held Tuesday, June 18 in Santa Ana, Calif. Public services were held Saturday, July 20 at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church in Blanchardville, Wisconsin with the Rev. Mark Gruner of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish officiating. Interment was at Graceland cemetery in Blanchardville, Wisconsin.

Grace I. (Jones) Sirois
2002-05-30

Grace I. (Jones) Sirois, 92, of Salem, Massachusetts, died Monday morning, May 27, in a Salem area nursing home, following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Albert R. Sirois who was a longtime youth director of the Salem YMCA.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Warren F. and Grace E. (Griffen) Jones and was a lifelong resident of the city.

Prior to her retirement in 1971, she was employed at Parker Bros. in Salem for 23 years.

Mrs. Sirois is survived by two sons, Ronald L. and his wife Barbara Sirois of Salem and Albert C. Sirois of East Boothbay; seven grandchildren and their spouses, David Sirois and Ruth Hajer of Salem, Scott and Jennifer Sirois of Belford, N.J., Raymond and Michelle Sirois of Harrison, Jean Marie and Martin Patrizi of Strafford, N.H., Stephen Sirois of Miami, Fla., Suzanne Sirois and Edward Harmon of East Boothbay, and Russell and Kimberly Sirois of Edgecomb; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Warren F. Jones, Jr., Harold S. Jones, Curtis E. Jones Sr., Marion LeBel, Barbara Kanellos and Gladys Bouchard.

Her funeral service was held on Thursday, May 30 in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, Mass. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Carmon Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Earle Sargent, 93
2002-02-01

Earle F. Sargent, 93, of Gray, passed away on January 28 at Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Sargent was born in Northeast Harbor, a son of George and Mina Butler Sargent. He spent his childhood in Hampden, and attended Hampden Academy. Later, he moved to Southwest Harbor and graduated from Pemetic High School in 1927.

He was a hard worker. He spent many years working on a fish wharf, then was a cook on commercial fishing boats. After retiring, he worked for Holden's Seafood. He lived in Portland and South Portland before he moved to Gray.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sheila "Farrar" Sargent; a daughter, Mrs. Harley Elaine Spurling, of Gray; his grandchildren: Ruthanne Bonney, Robbie Orlando, Wendy Pollard and Harley Spurling, Jr., all of Gray; Rosanne Charland Lee and Daniel Spurling, of New Gloucester; Wanda Spurling, of Raymond; Roxanne Sullivan, of Buxton; Roger Spurling, of Eustis; and ten great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Sargent will be held on Saturday, February 2, at 10 A.M. at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. Rev. Douglas Hedstrom will officiate.

Kenneth C. Smith
2002-12-12

Kenneth Chatfield Smith, 60, of East Montpelier, Vermont and Ocean Point in East Boothbay died Saturday, December 7 in Boothbay Harbor. He was born August 14, 1942 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a son of Kenneth and Marcia Chatfield Smith. He was a graduate of Roger Ludlow High School in Fairfield, Conn. and Bowdoin College, Brunswick. He received his master's degree from the University of Connecticut.

In 1966, Ken married Ann Fulton in Augusta and they made their home in East Montpelier, Vermont and Ocean Point.

Mr. Smith taught English at S.U.N.Y. Albany and was a College Administrator at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.

He retired in June 2002 to spend his summers in Ocean Point and winters in Abaco Island, Bahamas.

His interests included being an antique print dealer, boating and diving. He enjoyed lecturing with the Vermont Council on the Humanities book program.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ann F. Smith of East Montpelier, Vt. and Ocean Point; sons, Matthew Smith and his wife, Kiran of Boston, Mass. and Geoffrey C. Smith of Portland; a brother, Christopher Smith of Greene; and a sister, Cynthia Smith of Gorham.

A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2003 at a time and date to be announced.

In Ken's memory, donations may be made to the Vermont Council on the Humanities, 200 Park Street, Morrisville, VT 05561.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
