Wendy R. Smith
2002-07-11

Wendy R. Smith, 56, died July 1 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born October 10, 1945 in Attleboro, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Gilbert Lawton and Phyllis Kimmell.

She graduated from Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Massachusetts after graduating She attended Northeastern University. Residing in Boothbay Harbor, she went on to work for N.A. Reny Construction.

Survivors include her mother Phyllis K. Lawton of Boothbay Harbor; one brother, Jon H. Lawton of California; one son, Charles L. Smith of Boothbay Harbor; and one daughter, Keeley S. Lewis of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 5 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Elinore Smith
2002-05-30

Elinore Smith, 76, of East Boothbay died at St. Andrews Hospital on May 24 after a courageous two-and-a -half-year battle with cancer. Her devoted husband, Merlin Smith, was by her side until the end of her life.

In 1926 she was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was raised by her mother Edith Weinstein, a bookkeeper in Manhattan's diamond district, and her father, Louis Klein, who drove a hook and ladder for the New York City fire department. In 1945 she graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in mathematics.

In 1955, she met and married Merlin Smith, an electrical engineer with IBM's research division in New York City. Mrs. Smith worked for IBM as a computer programmer, one of the first in her field. The couple settled in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., where they raised their children, Larry, Derek, and April.

In later years, Mrs. Smith persevered through great family tragedies including her youngest son's struggle with juvenile diabetes, the early death of her eldest son from leukemia, and the loss of her beloved sister from brain cancer.

In 1992, Elinore and Merlin fulfilled their retirement dream and moved to their new home in East Boothbay, where a private memorial service honoring Elinore's life will be held.

Survivors include her husband, Merlin, of East Boothbay; a son, Derek, a daughter, April Smith-Ziegler; a son-in-law, Eric Ziegler; grandchildren, Susan Ziegler and Evan Ziegler; nieces Laura Liss and Caroline Liss; and grandniece, Rachel Porter.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to any organization benefiting those with childhood illnesses, leukemia or juvenile diabetes.

Louise B. Snowman

Louise B. Snowman

Louise Barter Snowman, 87, died April 18 at her home in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on August 22, 1914, she was the daughter of Ernest and Eudah Herson Barter.

In the early 1930s she graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School, and was a devoted housewife and mother.

Mrs. Snowman worked at the Boothbay Harbor Freezer and First National grocery store. She was a life-long resident of the Boothbay region. She helped her husband with repairs and the painting of his lobster traps. She enjoyed the outdoors.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Roberts Snowman, Sr., in 1972.

Survivors include her son, John Roberts Snowman, Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; a sister, Verona Patterson of Connecticut; a brother, Donald F. Barter of Southport; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24 at the Spruce Lawn cemetery in Southport.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Bronislaus T. Stabach
2002-10-03

Bronislaus T. "Ben" Stabach, 69, died Thursday, September 26 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. born September 23, 1933 in Meriden, Conn., he was the son of Stanislav Stabach and Eleanora Gogola Stabach. He was raised in Meriden where he attended local schools.

After graduating from Wilcox Technical School, he began his lifetime career in carpentry.

Mr. Stabach served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After the service, his work took him and his family to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in 1969 and then to Fayston, Vermont where he lived and worked for 20 years.

In 1993, he moved to Boothbay, working part-time at the Boothbay Region YMCA where he made many friends. Mr. Stabach was a people person who enjoyed meeting new people, socializing and telling stories. Sunset picnics with his family at Barrett's Park were among his favorite things to do. He was an avid skier, hunter and fisherman, both fresh and salt water. Just weeks before his death, he enjoyed a fishing trip with some old friends from Vermont. As usual, he caught the first fish.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Leocadia "Lee" Retallack; and brothers, Frank Stabach, Louis Stabach, Joseph Stabach and Eugene "Charlie" Stabach.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Ann Baraldi Stabach of Boothbay; a daughter, Mary Ellen Stabach of Wiscasset; a son, Michael Stabach of Warren, Vermont; a twin brother, Edward Stabach of Portland, Conn.; two sisters, Genevieve Wawrzeniak of Ocala, Fla. and Irene Curtis of Madison, Conn.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Family and friends will gather Sunday, October 6 at 1 p.m. in the Coastal Club Room at the Boothbay Region YMCA for a celebration of his life. Donations in his memory may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, 261 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04538 or to a charity of your choice.

James P. Stevens
2002-07-11

James Perkins Stevens of Boothbay, noted shipbuilder, marine historian and genealogist died peacefully with his family surrounding him, at his home on the River Road in Boothbay on July 6.

Born in Popham Beach on March 16, 1916, he was the second son of Jacob Arthur and Ella Stacey Stevens.

Mr. Stevens came to East Boothbay at the age of four and was a lifelong resident of the region. He attended Gould Academy in Bethel and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School, class of 1933.

On January 1, 1936 he married Evelyn Thurston of Rumford Point, and together they had eight children.

Mr. Stevens began working with his father and older brother at Goudy & Stevens in East Boothbay. He spent the winter of 1940-41 as foreman at the Donaldson Shipyard in South Portland. During the early part World War II, he was foreman at Camden Shipbuilding & Marine Railway Company in Camden. He returned to Goudy & Stevens in 1943 becoming a partner with his brother, the late Jacob "Tunk" Stevens and his brother-in- law, the late Frank Cummings. Mr. Stevens retired in 1987 devoting his time to marine history and genealogy, having written several articles and one book, "Reminiscences of a Boothbay Boatbuilder."

Throughout his life he took an active role in community affairs and was a member of the following organizations: Crescent Chapter #54, Order of the Eastern Star and Bayview Lodge 196, lifetime member of each; Boothbay School Board, Maine Boatbuilders, past director; Bath Marine Museum, past director; and one of the original founders of the Boothbay Region Historical Society. Mr. Stevens was also awarded the lifetime service award from the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club in 1991. He was inducted into the Maritime Boatbuilders Hall of Fame in 1994. He was recently the subject of an article "Fifty Years a Boatbuilder," published in the June 2002 issue of WoodenBoat.

Some of the notable ships that Mr. Stevens built were: the America, launched in 1967; Sea Star launched in 1969 for Lawrence Rockefeller, and Cassiar launched in 1968 for the Mellon family.

Mr. Stevens is predeceased by his parents, brother, sister Eva, daughter Judith, grandson James Harvey and great-granddaughter, Emily Ann.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Thurston Stevens and their seven children: Joel B. Stevens and wife Judy of Panama City, Florida; Elizabeth and husband Merle Smith of Farmington, Edith Stevens of Westbrook; Ella and husband William Ibarguen of Farmington; James Nathaniel Stevens and wife, Barbara of Dresden; Jacob A. Stevens, III and wife, Margaret of Bristol, Rhode Island; and Ellen and husband Robert Newton of Boothbay; 23 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grand-children and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He leaves many cherished friends as well.

Those who wish may make contributions, in Mr. Stevens' memory to: Boothbay Region Historical Society, Boothbay Harbor, Maine, East Boothbay Methodist Church, East Boothbay, Maine and Popham Beach Chapel, Popham Beach, Maine.

Visiting hours were private. A funeral service was held at the East Boothbay Methodist Church in East Boothbay on Tuesday, July 9.

Dorothy C. Stevens
2002-08-08

Dorothy Carolyn Stevens, 92, of Nashua, N.H., and a lifelong summer resident of Ocean Point, died Monday, August 5 in Nashua.

Miss Stevens was born on December 12, 1909 in Nashua. She was educated in the Nashua schools and graduated from the MacDuffie School in Springfield, Mass. and Connecticut College for Women in New London, Conn., class of 1932.

Upon graduation from college she worked at the family-owned Maine Manufacturing Company. From 1938 to 1940 she worked as a medical secretary at Harvard University.

In 1941, she sailed to England to work for the American Hospital in Britain near Oxford. After the United States entered the war, she went to London to work for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), later the CIA, which was the beginning of a long career in government service. After brief tours in Berlin, Germany and Washington, D.C., she spent over 25 years in London. She retired in 1969 and in 1974 returned to Nashua, where she led a very active life involved in the community.

Miss Stevens was the sole survivor of the six children of I. Frank and Mabel (Ellis) Stevens of Nashua and Ocean Point.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. John Bartlett Stevens of Nashua and Mrs. Lawrence Nye Stevens of Arlington, Va.; 11 nieces and nephews; her loving and devoted caregiver, Silvie Hamel of Manchester; and many grandnieces; grandnephews; great-grandnieces; and great grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Davis Funeral Home of Nashua, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.

David L. Stinson Sr.
2002-07-04

David Lee Stinson Sr., 46, of Bath, died Saturday, June 29 at the Bodwell Unit, in the Senior Center, Brunswick.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on September 2, 1955, he was the son of William Lowell and Mildred Sarah (Poore) Stinson. Mr. attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Morse High School with his twin sister Diane in the class of 1974.

Mr. Stinson was a carpenter/con-struction worker. He worked in Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri and Portland. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and walks in the woods.

He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth C. Stinson in 1976.

Survivors include one son, David Stinson Jr. and his ex-wife Elsie Berry Stinson of Woolwich; one daughter, Stacey Ludgin and her husband Peter and granddaughters Ashleigh and Adrie of Lewiston; birth mother, Mildred Stinson of Boothbay; twin sister, Diane Palmer and her husband Paul of New Hampshire; sister, Mary Lou Leighton and her husband Gardner of Wiscasset; half-sister, Lisa Foye and husband Trevor; and niece Hanna, all of Wiscasset; half sister, Laura Bacon and her husband Wendell, nephew Scott and niece Melissa, all of Dixfield; and parents Lowell and Priscilla Stinson of Wiscasset.

Internment will be held at the Green Lawn cemetery in Wiscasset at the convenience of the family.

Story B. Everett
2002-02-07

Story Benjamin Everett, 87, of Wiscasset died Friday, February 1 at his residence.

Born in Washburn on March 27, 1914, he was the son of Harvey and Mary (Clarke) Everett.

On April 28, 1937, he married Janet Hersey of Springfield, New Brunswick, Canada.

Mr. Everett graduated from Boston Trade School and worked for Westinghouse Electric in Boston before becoming self-employed as owner/ operator of Everett's Market in South Gardiner, as well as a chicken farmer and carpenter. He lived in Boston, Mass., South Gardiner and Gardiner prior to moving to Wiscasset in 1981.

He was an active member of the Bible Baptist Church in Wiscasset where he served as deacon for many years. Previously, he had been a deacon and treasurer of the South Gardiner Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years; a son, Stetson Everett and his wife Marjorie of Hancock; a daughter, Crystal Jones and her husband Mickey of Wiscasset; six sisters, Gladys Conley of Easton; Hazel D'Amico of Ocala, Fla., Theora Jansen of South Portland, Marcella Dean of Dover, N.H., Ruth Milbury of Rochester, N.H. and Ina Jolin of East Winthrop; six grandchildren, Stetson Everett II of Topsham, Maureen Tolley of Charlotte, N.C., Gregory Everett of Alexandria, Va., Shelly Jacoby of Merrimack, N.H., Chad Jones of Wiscasset and Brett Jones of Westport Island; nine great-grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Everett; one sister, Olive Everett and one brother, Manzer Everett.

A funeral service was held Monday, February 4 at the Bible Baptist Church, Beechnut Hill Road, Wiscasset. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bible Baptist Church, 143 Beechnut Hill Road, Wiscasset, 04578 or to Miles Home Health-Hospice, 42 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, 04543.

Jack D. Suiter
2002-12-19

Jack D. Suiter of Delray Beach, Florida and East Boothbay, died December 13.

He was born in Ohio December 12, 1925. He graduated from the University of Miami and during World War II he served in the Army. For many years he was in real estate and economic development in Miami and Coral Gables, Florida.

His passion was sailing and he won numerous ocean races. He was a member of the Cruising Club of America, Coral Gables Yacht Club, the Manalapan Yacht Club, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, the Little Club of Gulf Stream and the Delray Beach Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; two daughters, Wendy Annecharico (Frank), and Jackie Leksen (Sten); stepchildren, Robert and Leonard Linton, William Martin, Candace Barefoot, Cameron and Barclay Charles; and several grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, December 17 at the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach on Gleason Street in Delray Beach, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
