Robert H. Sutter
2002-12-05

Robert Hanson Sutter, 88, of Wiscasset died Sunday, November 30 at Cove's Edge skilled care facility in Damariscotta.

Born in Kingman June 1, 1914, he was the son of Bryce and Bertha (Hanson) Sutter. He moved to Wiscasset at the age of one when his father purchased a farm on Chewonki Neck Road, now the location of the Wiscasset Airport.

He started his working career at age 14, operating Hoyt's farm, now part of the Chewonki Foundation campus, caring for 20 milk cows, one bull, two horses, 100 sheep and 1000 laying hens.

Leaving the farm in his early twenties, he drove a bus on city routes in Bath for the Bath Bus Service and worked as a shipfitter at Bath Iron Works during the World War II years. Moving back to Wiscasset in 1946, he worked for his brother-in-law, Forrest Johnson, at Highland Dairy Farm doing farm work and driving a milk delivery route.

He worked at the Wiscasset school system as a janitor and school bus driver for several years, was self employed as a carpenter, painter and logger and worked as a caretaker at Damarin, a private Wiscasset estate, retiring in his mid-seventies.

He resided at Deer Ridge for 15 years until his health failed and at Cove's Edge for the past two years.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Cora May (Pearson) Sutter, and his second wife, Velma Irene (West) Sutter, five sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Earl and his wife Ann (Tilton) Sutter, William Curtis and his wife Judith (Benner) Sutter and Scott Allan Sutter, all of Wiscasset; one daughter, Ruth Ives and her husband Robert of Pemaquid; sisters, Josephine Gertrude Johnson of Wiscasset and Elinor Rae Leslie and her husband Dean of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, John Bryce Sutter and his wife Charlotte Sutter of Woolwich, and James Clinton Sutter and his wife Jean (Bailey) Sutter of Wiscasset; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to The Carpenter's Boat Shop, 440 Old County Road, Pemaquid, ME 04558.

Inez E. Sawyer
2003-06-26

Inez Elizabeth Sawyer, 98, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away Tuesday, June 24 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born February 18, 1905, she was a daughter of Cpt. William and Sarah Winslow Barter. She was the oldest of 17 siblings. She attended local Boothbay region schools.

She accompanied her husband on a freighter, traveling up and down the East Coast and Florida. For 30 summers she worked doing housework and cooking for private families. She also worked in the Village Store and Logan's for many years.

Mrs. Sawyer was a member of the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor. She loved traveling and exploring new places and she also took great pride in her home.

Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins; and especially her niece who was her caretaker for 25 years, Suzanne Raudenbush of Southport.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 27 at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Donations in Mrs. Sawyer's memory may be made to the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor, 75 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Stacy Hill Schwabe
2003-05-22

Stacy Hill Schwabe died unexpectedly on May 1, 2003 in Chico, California at the age of 39.

She was born Sept. 4, 1963. She attended the Waldorf School outside of Philadelphia where her father, Edward Hill, was headmaster.

She later graduated from the California State Police Academy and worked as a prison guard in Calfornia.

She was married to Martin Schwabe and had a seven-year-old son, Tobias. The most important thing in the world to her was her family.

Mrs. Schwabe's hobbies and interests included interior decorating, gardening, entertaining, hiking, and Tai Kwan Do, in which she had a black belt.

Beside her husband and son, she leaves her mother Billie Winicov and stepfather Herb Winicov of East Boothbay; her sister Serena Bartholomew of Anchorage, Alaska; her brother Barron Richardson Hill of Sacramento, Calif.; and her nephew Levi Bartholomew of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service will be held on May 21 in Anchorage, Alaska.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Columba's Episcopal Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 297, Boothbay, ME 04537-0297.

Ida A. Scott
2003-07-17

Ida A. (Murphy) Scott of Stafford Springs, Connecticut died Monday, July 7.

She grew up in Boothbay then moved to Connecticut where she worked for the Department of Mental Retardation for many years.

She was an active member of the Brumfield Baptist Church and volunteered at the Vernon soup kitchen.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara, and her brothers, Charlie, James and Neal Murphy, all of Boothbay, where she had a large extended family and great friends. She was the loving mother of Bruce Scott Jr. of Ashford, Conn. and Patricia Hack of Stratford, Conn.; the grandmother of Thomas, Matthew, Patrick and Justin Scott and Jennifer and Sean Hack; and the great-grandmother of Eligh Hack.

Funeral services were held at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be a memorial service at Ocean View cemetery in Boothbay at a later date.

George W. Seidel
2003-10-10

George William Seidel, Jr., 84, went home to be with the Lord September 30, 2003.

Born in Shamokin, PA, September 19, 1929, the son of George W. and Carrie Holden Seidel Sr.

Mr. Seidel worked at Orangeburg Fibre in Orangeburg, NY, for many years. After retirement, he volunteered at Pineland Center and C.M.M.C. While living in New York, Mr. Seidel was a Captain in the volunteer ambulance service. He loved hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Florence; son, Jeffrey Seidel and wife, Chris, of New York; two daughters, Judith Capasso and husband, Patrick of New York; Carol Seidel of New York; grandchildren, Marie Capasso, John Cappaso and wife Shelly, Jennifer, Jamie, Jason, James, Jr., Janine and Jessica Seidel; great-granddaughter, Kristian Capasso; sisters and brothers, Earle Seidel, Dab Downs, Pauline Coursin, Fay Kopenhaver, Elizabeth Van Curt, Isabelle Getz, Carol Sunday, Andrew Seidel.

Mr. Seidel was predeceased by a son, James R. Seidel and one brother, Norman Seidel.

Gloria Wade Seiders
2003-06-19

Gloria Wade Seiders, 80, of South Bristol, died Sunday, June 15 at Coves Edge in Damariscotta.

Born on October 28, 1923 in Newcastle, she was the daughter of Bryant and Emma Hodgdon Wade.

She attended Newcastle schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1941.

Also in 1941 she married Lamar Seiders. They moved to South Bristol, which became their home for 62 years. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper for Lamar Seiders Construction and for the South Bristol Co-op.

Mrs. Seiders spent lots of time camping, traveling and just being at home. She was an avid reader who enjoyed reading poetry; she loved to sew, quilt and crewel embroider.

She was predeceased by her brother Nathaniel Wade.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Lamar Seiders of South Bristol; two daughters, Claudia Shaw of Wiscasset and Pamela Davis and her husband Leigh of Boothbay; one son, Dwayne Seiders and his wife Janice of South Bristol; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, June 18 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at the South Bristol Union Church in South Bristol.

Donations may be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, 40 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Marcel N. Senay
2003-01-16

Marcel N. Senay, 73, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Leominster, Mass., died Wednesday, December 25. Mr. Senay spent summers at Ocean Point in East Boothbay where he enjoyed fishing.

He was known for his great sense of humor and infectious laugh.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Simone (Bourque) Senay; two daughters, Cathleen Bennos and her husband, Aaron, of Chelmsford, Mass. and Patricia Balas and her husband, Mitchell, of Bradenton, Florida; two granddaughters, Cortney Balas of Swampscott, Mass. and Lauren Balas of Chelmsford, Mass.; a sister, Constance Cormier of Leominster, Mass.; and many nephews and nieces.

William Bernard Shelley
2003-06-13

William Bernard Shelley, 83, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Brentwood Nursing Center.

Mr. Shelley was born December 28, 1919, in New York, New York.

Mr. Shelley served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during World War II, serving in the European Theater fighting in Italy, France and Germany. He was a New York City police officer, a supervisor for the New York Mets for five years. He was also a member of the Elks and the American Legion Post #86.

He was predeceased by his first wife of over 25 years, Lillian Gasparick Shelley. Mr. Shelley is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Joan Shelley of Gray. His children sons, William Shelley and Timothy Shelley of Gray, Daniel Shelley and Dennis Winthers of New York. Daughters, Catherine Lemmo, Bernadette Senesi and Jennifer Sheridan all of New York. He also leaves 16 fabulous grandchildren and one niece Doreen Sauerhoft.

Memorial donations may be made to Gray Rescue, 125 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine 04039.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Timothy M. Sherman
2003-02-20

Timothy M. Sherman, 42, of Boothbay died February 11 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born March 6, 1960 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Sidney and Dorothy Blake Sherman.

He grew up on Southport and Newagen and attended local schools. He graduated from Boothbay Region High School in 1978. He also attended Inboard/Outboard School in New Jersey.

Mr. Sherman had a love for building boats. He built his first boat at the age of 10. He started his career working at Sample's Shipyard and spent 14 years at Hodgdon Yachts under the leadership of Sonny Hodgdon, who also taught him how to build half models. He worked on many boats while at Hodgdon's, including the Liberty and the Yorel. After Hodgdon Yachts, he started Back Narrows Boatworks, which he ran for about 10 years.

He was an excellent mechanic, not only on boats but also on cars. He also enjoyed photography, family gatherings and playing horseshoes and darts. He loved his dogs, "his crew," as he called them.

He was predeceased by his father, Sidney C. Sherman.

Survivors include his wife, Kelley Sherman of Boothbay; his mother, Dottie Patton of Boothbay Harbor; his daughter, Ashley Sherman of Boothbay; two brothers, Roland Sherman of Southport and David Sherman of Boothbay Harbor; three sisters, Paula Sherman of Williamsburg, Va., Vickie Carver of West Boothbay Harbor and Kathy Sherman Blagdon of Wiscasset; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Friday, February 14 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Timothy's memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 7 Edgecomb, ME 04556, or the American Cancer Society, 100 Main Street, Suite 300 Topsham, Maine 04086.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
