Peter M. Sherman
2003-10-30

Peter M. Sherman, 71, died suddenly while visiting family in Mooresville, North Carolina on October 13.

The son of Gertrude and Charles Sherman, he was born February 2, 1932 in Damariscotta. He spent his youth at Road's End in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1949. Mr. Sherman graduated with honors from Massachussetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in naval architecture.

He worked in the naval architecture and engineering field all of his career, holding positions of responsibility all over the world. He worked for Newport News Shipbuilding, Electric Boat, the U.S. Navy, ODECO and spent time with AVCO working on space reentry vehicles.

In addition to his work, Mr. Sherman enjoyed woodworking, including boat building, and cooking. He was known by his friends for creating "the World's Best Caesar Salad."

Survivors include wife, Linda F. Sherman of Rosanky, Tx.; daughters, Suzanne S. Rogillio of Mandeville, La., Alissa S. Berryman of Weatherford, Tx. and Frances Knight of Mooresville, N. C.; a sister, Dawn S. Gilbert of Boothbay; brothers, Charles Scott Sherman of Charlottesville, N.C. and Robert S. Sherman of Bowdoinham; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Burial was at sea off Boothbay Harbor on October 19, led by Father John Ineson of Damariscotta.

Donations in his honor may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation - Maine Affiliate, 10 Bangor Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

Maria Sico
2003-06-27

Maria Sico died on June 15, 2003.

Maria Ferrucci Sico was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December, 16, 1912. She lived in Brooklyn for many years and was employed as a trade seamstress. She was married to Angelo Sico.

Maria and Angelo retired and moved to Gray in 1978 and lived on Crystal Lake.

Angelo Sico died in Gray in 1987. They were communicants of St. Gregory's Church in Gray. For the past several years she lived at Park Danforth in Portland. Maria is survived by a brother, Joseph Ferrucci, of New York.

The funeral was held at St. Gregory's on Wednesday, June 18, celebrated by Msg. Lavoie.

Helen M. Silberzahn
2003-09-04

Helen Moser Silberzahn, 88, a resident of South Pasadena, Florida, passed away at her daughter's home in Boothbay Harbor on Sunday, September 1.

Born in Beacon, New York on December 17, 1914, she was the daughter of John and Helen Hejna.

On July 15, 1930 she married Ludwig Moser. He was a Master Baker who emigrated from Germany, and together they owned and operated bakeries in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and New Jersey. Mr. Moser died on December 7, 1962.

She moved to Monroe, New York near her daughter's family. Always devoted to her family, she was a loving mother, grandmother and aunt. In 1994, she moved to Florida to be near her son, and spent her summers with her daughter in Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include her son, John Moser and his wife Janis of Treasure Island, Florida; her daughter, Jean McKay and her husband Robert of Boothbay Harbor; two grandsons, Robert B. McKay Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Hopkinton, R.I. and John Moser of Indianapolis, Ind.; two granddaughters, Heather Bowes and her husband Christopher of Annapolis, Md., and Jalene Moser of St. Pete, Fla.; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Burnt Island Living Lighthouse, Education Director, Dept. Marine Resources, W. Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575. Mrs. Silberzahn was unable to see the project completed, but a special memorial will be made to the natural history education program in her name.

Lyn Alice Simpson
2003-08-28

Miss Lyn Alice Simpson, age 41, lost her long, courageous battle with cancer, at home with her loving family by her side, on Sunday, August 10. Miss Simpson was born on October 15, 1961 and was a resident of Connecticut all her life, growing up in Glastonbury and most recently living in New Haven and then Orange.

She was a graduate of Bryant College where she majored in marketing, and earned her masters degree in education from American International College in Springfield. For the past several years, she worked at Yale University as an instructor in the Learning Center and in the Accounting department.

Miss Simpson was active in Girl Scouting from second grade through high school. She loved sailing, reading, visiting with friends and family in Maine, and had a special rapport with children.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather Carol and Ted Lingard of Southport; her father and stepmother, Don and Dawn Simpson of Farmington, Conn.; her brother and sister-in-law Wes and Laurie; her adored niece and nephew Taylor and Cameron Simpson of Orange, Conn.; and her Aunt Marilyn, Uncle Rufus, and cousins Holly and Lucy Franklin of Holden, Mass.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 13. In lieu of flowers contributions are requested for a memorial fund that is being established in Miss Simpson's name by the Connecticut Valley Girl Scout Council, Attn: Development Department, 340 Washington St., Hartford, CT 06106.

Gladys M. Smith
2003-11-27

Gladys Myra Redden Smith, 93, died Thursday, November 20 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Brn September 9, 1910 in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Grant Sumner and Katherine (Myra) Redden. She attended Boston schools and graduated from Miss Michaud's School in Boston.

While working for New England Telephone in Boston, she met George Arthur Smith and they were married on April 12, 1941. They made their home in Hanover, Mass. In 1974, she moved to Maine, living in Falmouth and then moving to the Damariscotta area after the death of her husband in 1980.

Mrs. Smith was an active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hanover, Mass. for over thirty years and also in Hanover, she was active in the Visiting Nurse Association, the Garden Club and the P.T.A. In the Damariscotta area, she was active in Miles Hospital League as well as the Olde Bristol Garden Club, of which she was made an honorary life member.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Arthur Smith in 1980, two sisters, Dorothy Gertrude Compton and Ellen Laurie Redden, and one brother, Charles Sumner Redden.

Survivors include her daughter, Bettina Smith Tucker and her husband Hal of Wiscasset; two grandsons, Christopher Dodge Reed of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Matthew Smith Reed of Wiscasset and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 29 at 11 a.m. at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset with the Rev. Dr. Harold Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Blue Hill cemetery in Braintree, Mass. at a later date.

Neal Morrison Smith
2003-12-18

Neal Morrison Smith, 72, of Naples, Florida and Boothbay Harbor died at his home December 10, 2003 of complications of pancreatic cancer.

He was the husband of the former Roxanne Gammon.

Born February 7, 1931 in Exeter, N.H., he was the son of Ralph and Jessie (Morrison) Smith.

He was a graduate of Lynn English High School, Class of 1949, Burdett College School of Accounting, and Northeastern University School of Accounting and Taxation.

Mr. Smith served in the United States Naval Reserve for 12 years as an officer in the Supply Corps and was also self-employed in the public accounting field.

In 1967 he became a principal partner and CFO of Bicknell, Inc., a wholesale distributor of quality water products including filtration systems and pre-engineered swimming pools and water-related products. He was also a founding principal of Bicknell/Tidewater Inc., Hampton, Va., and a founding partner in Heritage Associates and also Tidewater Associates, managing properties in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia.

He was a charter member of the Swimming Pool Association of New England (SPANE), the National Swimming Pool Institute (NSPI), and a lifetime member and supporter of the National Swimming Pool Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Mr. Smith retired in 1990.

In addition to his career responsibilities he served for 12 years on the finance committee for the town of Danvers, Mass. and was a 50-year medal holder of the Bethlehem Lodge of Masons AF&AM in Lynn, Mass.

An avid boating enthusiast, Mr. Smith held a U.S. Coast Guard master's license for 20 years and was a 30-year member of the Gloucester (Mass.) and Wawenock (Me.) Power Squadrons, holding the rank of navigator. He was also a 21-year member of the Down East Yacht Club of Boothbay Harbor.

He was a past president of the Danvers, Mass. Junior chamber of Commerce and a Life Member and Senator of the U.S. and International Junior Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his devoted wife Roxanne, he is survived by his parents, Ralph and Jessie Smith of Rutland, Vt.; two sons, Bradford N. And his wife Jodi of Marlborough, Mass., and Douglas N. And his wife Pamela of Newburyport, Mass.; one daughter, Rachael A. Of Sagamore Beach, Mass.; a sister, Joyce M. Hall and her husband Edward of Rutland, Vt.; and seven grandchildren.

A daughter, Deborah L. Bouranis, predeceased him in death.

At the request of the deceased, memorial services and burial at sea will be private. Arrangements are under the care of Pine State Cremation, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Miles Hospice, 40 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Marjorie B. Smith
2003-04-10

Marjorie Bither Smith, a resident of St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor, died April 5.

Born in 1914 in Lexington, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of J. Henry and Mary Duffy. She graduated from Bouve College (now Northeastern University) with a bachelor's degree and received her master's degree from Columbia University.

Mrs. Smith served in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at Colby College for over 25 years, retiring as Professor of Physical Education and director of both men's and women's physical education programs. She held strong beliefs that school systems should emphasize individual sports which students could pursue for a lifetime of physical fitness. She was one of the first women to hold the top administrative post in physical education for both men and women at a major college. She was a leader in advocating equality in sports for women, helping to found the Maine Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and serving as the organization's first president. During her tenure, the number of women's sports at Colby increased from one (skiing) to 13. She coached a number of women's sports teams, including the tennis, which won many state championships under her watch.

In 1979, Mrs. Smith received the Colby Brick, Colby's highest award, and was C Club Person of the Year in 1984. Upon her retirement, Colby established the Marjorie Bither award, presented annually to the Colby athlete who exhibits outstanding academic ability, athletic ability and leadership in athletics on campus.

She contributed much to her community serving as co-chair of the Waterville Community Concert series, a Girl Scout leader, board member of the Hinckley School, Deacon of the First Congregational Church and as a volunteer at local hospitals, schools and American Association of University Women activities.

Since moving to Boothbay Harbor in 2000, Mrs. Smith continued her active life by joining the Congregational Church, organizing the book club at St. Andrews Village and enjoying the activities of the Coastal Club.

Her husband, Philip Bither, a professor at Colby for over 42 years, predeceased her in 1995. In 1996, she married Dudley Smith who died in 2000.

She is survived by two sons, Stewart and his wife Nancy of East Boothbay and Richard and his wife Denise of Commerce TWS, Mich.; grandchildren, Christopher Bither of New York City and Andrea Malboeuf of Vail Colorado, Maria and Nicholas both of Commerce TWS; a brother, Wallace Duffy and his wife Mary of Apopka, Florida; a niece, Cathy Duffy of Farmington; and a nephew, John Duffy of Temple.

She was welcomed into the Smith family and is survived by three step- daughters, Linda Ames of South China, Diane Drinkwater of Belfast, and Karen Pipe of Fryeburg; and a large extended family.

A service to remember Marjorie will be held at the Congregational Church, 125 Townsend Ave. (Rt. 27), Boothbay Harbor at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 10.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Colby College to the Philip and Marjorie Bither fund, College Relations Office of Colby College, 4350 Mayflower Hill, Waterville, ME 04901.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Frederick L. Snowdon Sr.
2003-06-26

Frederick Leonard Snowdon Sr., 65, of Berry's Mill Road in West Bath, died Friday, June 20, 2003 at his residence.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was born in Bath on June 13, 1938, the son of Kenneth and Margaret Snowdon. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1956.

He joined the National Guard while still in high school and entered the U. S. Navy on March 1, 1956. He attended New Hampshire College for three years. On July 11, 1959 he marred Linnea "Marie" Hendrikson.

Mr. Snowdon was employed at Bath Iron Works in the electrical shop from 1959 to 1962, the Sunoco Gas Station in Bath for three years and the U.S. Post Office in Bath for 12 years.

For 10 years he was the postmaster in Damariscotta and later the postmaster in Wiscasset, retiring in 1996 with 34 years of postal service. He drove a school bus for Bill Reed for many years.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Wiscasset, where he served as a board member, bookkeeper and church treasurer; he was a volunteer for the West Bath Fire Department and a former selectmen of West Bath, serving for seven years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, woodworking, hunting, fishing, working in the yard and watching his grandchildren's sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, L. Marie Snowdon of West Bath; one son, Frederick L. Snowdon, II and his wife Christy of Georgetown; three daughters, Traci Nygaard and her husband Ron of West Bath, Marcia Goodfellow of Bath and Linnea Snowdon of South Portland; one brother, Kenneth Snowdon and his wife Faith of Greenville; one sister, Dorothy Pinkham and her husband Kenneth of Five Islands, nine grandchildren, Catie Snowdon, Hugh Goodfellow, Benjamin Goodfellow, Cameron Snowdon, Carl Nygaard, Joshua Hennie, Kaleb Snowdon, Jacob Snowdon, MacKenzie Snowdon; one great-grandson, Mason Gordon and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 29 at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 150 Congress Avenue in Bath. The Rev. William Curtis and the Rev. Wallace E. Staples will officiate.

A gathering of family and friends will follow the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at Orchard Hill cemetery in West Bath.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association or the American Heart Association. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath.
