Kristen Sommer
2003-06-06

Kristen (Kris) Phyrne Sommer, 49, died battling cancer on Sunday, May 25, 2003. A resident of New Gloucester, Kris was a devoted mother, a beloved daughter, a talented artist, an animal lover, a true friend, a world traveler, a mapmaker and a dedicated public servant.

Born in Los Angeles on September 26, 1953, to Lola and Philip Sommer.

In 1998, Kris moved to New Gloucester, where they finally had enough room for their growing animal family.

Kris also made room in her house and heart for teenagers in need of some motherly caring, family warmth or a hot meal. She called them her "lost children of the night."

She is survived by her mother Lola Sommer, daughter Jessica Sommer, her sister Kathryn Sommer, her adopted daughter Macala Marshall, two nieces and the many lost children of the night. She, also known as the Barn Fairy, will be missed by her animals.

She will also be missed by her family at GPCOG and friends throughout the region. Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray, Maine.

Kris was also an active member in the Cumberland County Riding Club. Her warm smile and helping hands will be missed.

Evangeline M. Sparks
2003-03-27

Evangeline M. Sparks, 87, of West Bath died Friday, March 21 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

Born in Lisbon Falls January 5, 1916, she was the daughter of William and Alice (Stanhope) Miller.

She moved to Brunswick as a young girl and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1933. She married Frank W. Sparks Jr. in 1936 and lived on Nequasset Lake in Woolwich. She moved to Bath in 1970 upon the death of her husband.

She worked in medical records at the Brunswick Naval Air Station Hospital and at Mid Coast Hospital in Bath.

Mrs. Sparks was a charter member of the Bath Garden Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank W. Sparks Jr., in 1970; one son, Michael A. Sparks, in 1993; and by 15 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one son, Frank W. Sparks III of West Bath; one daughter, Diane Hathorne and her husband Leon of Wiscasset; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in Riverside cemetery in Woolwich in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 160 B, Portland, 04101. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.

Blanche L. Spearin
2003-05-16

Blanche L. Spearin, 77, of Yarmouth Road, died May 11, 2003, at a Portland hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Her husband, Hazen Spearin, also died from the accident.

She was born in South Portland, a daughter of John H. and Harriett Wallace Worthen and attended schools there.

Mrs. Spearin moved here from Portland 43 years ago.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Worthen.

Surviving are a son, Mark J. Spearin of Durham, NC, and a sister, Elizabeth M. Worthen, of Portland.

Services will be held in conjunction with her husband's at 11 A.M., Saturday, May 17, at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, the Rev. Eva Cutler will officiate. Visiting will be from 10-11 A.M., prior to service. Interment will follow in Gray Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to:Gray Rescue, 125 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine 04039.

Arnold C. Stansfield, 85
2003-03-07

Arnold C. Stansfield, 85, passed away at Maine Medical Center on Friday, February 28, 2003, surrounded by his family.

He was born October 15, 1917, in Sanford, a son of George and Blanche Crawford Stansfield.

He was raised and educated in Sanford. Arnold graduated from Sanford High School in 1935, and entered in the military in 1942. After serving in the Army, he attended and graduated from Bryant College in 1948.

Arnold worked for many years at Goodall Sanford Mills and then at Pioneer Plastics of Auburn, where he retired. While working for Pioneer Plastics he and his family moved to Gray, Maine.

Mr. Stansfield was a very involved community member and belonged to many clubs, including: the Sanford YMCA, Preble Lodge No. 143, White Rose Chapter No 54 of Sanford and the Ruth Chapter No. 14 OES of Springvale.

While residing in Gray, he was a 30-year member of the American Legion Post 86, and he was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Gray, where he served as Deacon, Trustee and choir member for many years. He was also an original member of the Gray Gents a Barbershop Quartet.

Arnold will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the community. All who knew him loved him for his integrity and humor.

He was predeceased by son, John D. Krause; brothers, Norris and Norman Stansfield; and a sister, Irene Sproul.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Agnes Hill Stansfield of Gray; a son, Robert Stansfield of Gray, a daughter, Sheila Krause Giancola of New Gloucester; a son David Krause of Keeseville, NY; a son, William Stansfield of Fort Walton Beach, FL and six grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 P.M., Saturday, March 8, at the First Congregational Church of Gray. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to: Gray Rescue, P.O. Box 258, Gray, Maine 04039.

Arrangements under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Louise A. Stickney
2003-05-08

Louise A. Stickney, 91, a lifelong resident of Wiscasset died Monday, May 5 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born in Wiscasset March 15, 1912, she was the daughter of Richard T. and Blanche G. (Colby) Grover Sr. She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1928. She married George W. Stickney and raised their family of four children.

Mrs. Stickney was a member of the Wiscasset Baptist Church, the Woolwich Grange and the Mother's Club in Wiscasset.

She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Stickney, one son, George W. Stickney Jr., one daughter, Adeline L. Harvey, one great-granddaughter, Darlene Chartier, two sisters, Eva Bailey and Mildred Curtis, three brothers, Richard Grover Jr., Chester Grover and Ernest Grover. .

Survivors include two daughters, Blanche G. Johnson and her husband Stanley F. of Wiscasset and Dianne L. Sutherburg and her husband Terry J. of Newcastle; 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at the Day's Ferry Congregational Church on Old Stage Road in Woolwich with the Rev. Stanley F. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Baptist Church, 143 Beechnut Hill Road, Wiscasset, 04578.

Fabian B. Stoddard
2003-10-16

Fabian B. Stoddard, 32, of Boothbay, died Saturday, October 11, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born August 11, 1971 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Lee B. Stoddard and Rebecca L. Stoddard, and attended local schools.

Mr. Stoddard was self employed as a builder in the Boothbay Region.

An avid biker, he was a member of the United Bikers of Maine and was known locally to have crafted his own bikes from parts he purchased throughout the country. He also enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, boating and golfing.

Survivors include his father, Lee B. Stoddard; his mother, Rebecca Stoddard; longtime companion, Melanie Barter; a daughter, Chanel Stoddard, all of Boothbay; three brothers, Dusty Stoddard of Boothbay, Richard Leeman and Leslie Morton, both of Boothbay Harbor; two sisters, Caprice Holmes of Boothbay and Susan Hodgdon of Sawyer's Island; and a son, Gage Wahlstrom.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, October 15, at Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to: Chanel Stoddard College Fund, c/o Bath Savings Institution, Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were by the Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Parker R. Stone
2003-10-30

Parker R. Stone died October 24, 2003 in a Miami, Florida hospital following surgery to have one leg amputated, and other complications. He was 82.

Born in Boothbay Harbor May 24, 1921, the son of Arthur and Emma Stone, he worked at Pierce & Hartung for several years, then Bath Iron Works prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater in Hawaii and the Philippines, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1947 after serving four years and seven months.

After the war, he spent two years in the Naval Hospital recovering from heart problems and malaria. In 1958 he went to Florida where he worked for the Florida Power and Electric Company, retiring after 35 years. He continued to make his home in Florida until the time of his death.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary D. Hull of Boothbay and Margaret Hyson of Boothbay Harbor, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Four brothers predeceased him: Arthur, Jr., Glenwood, Ellsworth, and George Stone.

A military funeral is planned at the new veterans' chapel in Augusta, with burial in the new cemetery on October 31 at 1 p.m.

Ruth Parker Storrs
2003-06-05

Ruth Parker Storrs, 84, of Sherman Mills, died Sunday, June 1 at her home. She was born August 20, 1918 in Meridan, Connecticut.

In 1986 she and her husband moved from Sandy Hook, Conn. to Brunswick where they resided at Cluf Bay Road for 16 years.

Mrs. Storrs attended the First Parish Church, She was a member of a local PEO Chapter, former member of Hawthorne Chapter #104, Order of the Eastern Star in Brunswick and continued her membership at Molunkus Valley Chapter with their daughter and her husband.

Since 1960 Mrs. Storrs and her family summered at their Ocean Point cottage in East Boothbay.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Edwin B. Storrs; two daughters, Susan P. Andrews and her husband Gary of Bozeman, Montana, and Candace McKellar and her husband Donald of Sherman Mills; three grandsons and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at their Ocean Point cottage at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances may be sent to Whittier Congregational Church, Burleigh Street, Island Falls, ME 04747; First Parish Church, 9 Cleveland Street, Brunswick, ME 04011; or to another charity.

Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home of Yarmouth.

Evelyn Stratton
2003-05-22

Evelyn (Dox) Crawford Stratton, 98, died Friday, May 16 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts July 7, 1904, she was the daughter of Frank A. and Annie Luther Conner. She lived in Malden until the age of 12 when she moved with her family to Greenville, Pennsylvania where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Edinborough Teachers College. She continued her education and earned a master's degree. She returned to Malden where she taught at Malden High School until she retired.

During World War II, she worked for General Electric.

In Malden, she served on the board of directors of the Davenport Home and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She summered on Southport Island all of her life. She was a member of the Southport United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and avid member of the Hendricks Hill Museum. She served as an original trustee of the Southport Historical Society.

She was known for her artistry, writing and wonderful gardens.

Survivors include her cousins, Jean L. Thompson, Evelyn Sherman and Earl (Gus) Pratt, all of Southport; one niece, Virginia Nichols Amesbury of Newbury, Massachusetts; and six grandnieces and nephews, Kandra Bronstein, Kathy Nichol, Ruth Nichols, May Nichols, Richard Nichols and William Nichols.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, May 21 at the Southport United Methodist Church in Southport. The Rev. Dana-Beth Wells Goodwin officiated. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Southport.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
