Frank L. Steele
2003-01-09

Frank L. (Bud) Steele died Monday, December 30 at Cove's Edge Skilled Nursing Center.

Born April 4, 1920 in Quincy, Mass., he was a son of Lester B. and Hilda L. Steele.

After graduating from Lincoln Academy, he commenced active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1939. He graduated from electrical/ordnance school in San Diego in 1940 and reported to Pearl Harbor for submarine duty.

He continued his advancement through electrician's mate ratings and served on several different cruisers. At the age of 24 he was appointed commissioned Warrant Electrician. He was the youngest Warrant Officer at that time. He continued to serve his country through the Korean conflict and received several letters of commendation during that time. He graduated from Army Intelligence School in 1957. In 1959 he retired after 20 years of service to his country.

Mr. Steele worked several years for the Department of Agriculture as a poultry inspector. He then worked for Bath Iron Works as a tech writer, and retired from there after 15 years of service.

Over the years he served his community as Newcastle selectman, Newcastle budget committee member, chairman of the Marsh River Estuarine Sanctuary committee, on the zoning board of appeals and on the committee of the U.S. Route 1 corridor studies. He was a member of the Damariscotta Baptist Church where he served 12 years as deacon, and 13 years as trustee and Sunday School teacher.

In 1997 he received the Lincoln Academy Alumnus of the Year cup. He served as Newcastle area chairman for the Lincoln Academy fund-raising effort for the Dexter Wing, and 10 years on the Alumni Council.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Pauline Fisher Steele; four daughters, Joyce Schuetz of Tacoma, Wash., Peggy Moore of Fairfield, Conn., Sarah Rucker of Stowe, Mass. and Suzanne Willis of Newcastle; a sister, Marjorie Deniso of Cape Elizabeth; two brothers, Ralph I. of Pennsylvania, Edward C. of Wallaston, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, William A. Steele.

Funeral services were held at the Damariscotta Baptist Church Saturday, January 4.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society on one's choice.

Arrangements were under the care of Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Wendell P. Stevens
2003-07-31

Wendell Phillip Stevens, 63, of Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, July 26 at the Veterans Administration hospital in Togus.

Born on October 22, 1939 in Boothbay Harbor, he was a son of Atwood and Patience Reed Stevens. He was raised in the Boothbay region, graduating from Boothbay Region High School in 1957.

Mr. Stevens worked as a house painter and as a caretaker on Squirrel Island for a few years.

He loved listening to country music and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He also loved hunting, car racing, baseball and enjoyed going up to his brother Frank's camp in Alna.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Stevens, and his sister, Linda Morton.

Survivors include two brothers, Atwood "Frank" Stevens, Jr. of Boothbay and Ethan Stevens of Bath; two sisters, Eleanor Peaslee of Edgecomb and Patricia Holmes of Brunswick; two aunts, Priscilla Kinney of Boothbay and Mary Reed of Wiscasset; several nieces and nephews; and his special friends, Gary, Roger and Darryl Pinkham.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 29 at Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiated.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Mary Lydia (Harju) Saari
2004-10-28

Mary Lydia Saari, 88, died peacefully Tuesday, October 19 at Pine Point Center in Scarborough, after a brief period of declining health.

Born September 25, 1916 in Whitinsville, Mass., she was the first of three children of Anton and Hilja (Johnson) Harju. In 1925 the family moved to Jesup, Georgia, which became the family home. They were members of an active Finnish community in McKinnon, a village of Jesup, maintaining friendships which continue into the present.

After graduating in 1933 from Wayne County High School in Jesup, She moved to New York to work as a cook in the households of a few wealthy families. After several years, she returned to Georgia and worked in Brunswick and Atlanta in various accounting positions.

During World War II, she met her future husband, Kauko Rudolph Saari, while he was stationed in Atlanta at Fort McPherson with the then Army-Air Corps. They were married in January 1945.

After her husband's discharge from the service in December 1945, they returned to Maynard, Mass., her husband's home town. Their daughter Barbara was born the following month. They moved to the neighboring town of Stow a few years later.

Mrs. Saari worked in a variety of positions over the years, primarily in bookkeeping and dietary services. She was active in the Rebekahs and was Past Noble Grand of the Mizpah Rebekah Lodge #54 in Maynard.

The family also had a home in Raymond Cape on Sebago Lake, where they enjoyed summers and weekends year-round for almost 20 years.

Mrs. Saari and her husband retired to Lakeland, Fla. and later returned to Jesup, Georgia to care for her elderly parents. After her parents' deaths the couple returned to Maine, buying a house in Boothbay Harbor in 1984.

After her husband's death in 1991, Mrs. Saari remained in Boothbay Harbor until 2001, when frailty made living alone difficult. For the past three years, she lived next door to her daughter's home in Scarborough at the Pine Point Center. Mrs. Saari was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, and by her grandson Benjamin Sherburne.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Saari Sherburne and husband P. Michael Swartz of Scarborough; one sister, Esther Harju Carter and family of Beloit, Wisconsin; one brother, Ralph Anton Harju and family of Palestine, Texas; sisters-in-law, Evelyn D. Saari and Ventla W. Saari of Lake Worth, Florida; god-daughter, Kimberley Meggison Dyer of Saco; several nieces and nephews. Some very special friends are the Willis family, Arlene Tyrkko, Liz Kleinert, the Clevenson family, the Pasenens and Helena and Timo Kylmalahti of Finland.

At Mrs. Saari's request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to, Sunrise Point Residents' Activity Fund, Pine Point Center, 67 Pine Point Road, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Roger Sabin
2004-02-06

Roger William Sabin, 50, of Lawrence Road in Gray, died at Mercy Hospital on January 22.

He was born in Portland on February 20, 1953, son of Harold and Grace Sabin.

Roger's early education took place in the Windham schools. He graduated from Deering High School in Class of 1970, and attended the University of Southern Maine.

Throughout his life, Roger was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and Giants. In addition to being an avid sports fan, he enjoyed playing softball, volleyball and golf, on teams made up of his friends.

Many of Roger's fondest hours were spent at the Pizza Villa, his place of employment for 25 years.

Well-known for his quickness, breadth of knowledge and wit, he honed his gift for repartee on his customers, most of whom became friends of long standing.

In his final years, after being stricken with crippling neuropathy, he was humbled by the magnanimous caring and generosity bestowed upon him by his loved ones.'Roger is survived by his wife, Susan; his mother, Grace Sabin, of Westbrook,; and a sister, Becky Carr, of Standish.

He was predeceased by his father and by a brother, Quentin "Chip" Sabin.

Friends joined the family in a memorial remembrance of his life last Saturday at Saint Ann's Episcopal Church,Windham.

Sheila Sargent
2004-02-06

Sheila Sargent, 90, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on February 1, after a short illness.

She was born in Manset, ME, the daughter of Millard and Uldene Fernald Farrar.

She married Earle Sargent in 1933. They lived in Manset until the early 1950s, then moved to the Gray-New Gloucester area and then, in the late 1950s, to Portland and South Portland, where they lived until 1998, when they moved to Apple Tree Village, in Gray.

She was predeceased by her husband and a great-grandson, James Bonney.

She is survived by a daughter, Elaine, and son-in-law, Harley Spurling; granddaughter Roxanne and her husband, Richard Sullivan, of Buxton; grandchildren Rosanne Charland, Lee Spurling, Danny and wife Brenda Spurling, all of New Gloucester, and Ruthanne and husband Bill Bonney, Robbie and husband Tony Orlando, Butch Spurling and Wendy Pollard, all of Gray, and Roger Spurling, of Eustis. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

She loved her friends at Apple Tree Village, going for rides and having friends visit.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 6, at Wilson Funeral Home, Gray. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the James Bonney Scholarship Fund, care of Ruthanne Bonney, 68 Ramsdell Road, Gray, ME 04039.

Richard Scribner
2004-04-16

Richard T. "Dick" Scribner, 75, of Totten Road in Gray, passed away quietly at his home early Thursday morning, April 8, following a brief illness.

He was born in Portland on November 30, 1928, the son of Everett Scribner and Florence Toye Whitney.

Dick attended Portland area schools, ending with Deering High School in 1945.

He worked at Rines Brothers and the American Can Company in Portland prior to serving as a military police officer with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.

After returning home from the service in 1957, he started work as a landscaper around the Greater Portland area, and was well-known for his meticulous and beautiful work.

He was a member of the Eagles and the American Legion.

Richard is survived by his wife of nearly thirty years, Betty L. Brown Scribner, of Gray; his sons, Gary J. Scribner, of Gray, and Ricky Scribner Rhoades, of Iowa; his daughter, Sandra J. Scribner Merlim, of Westbrook; and two daughters from a previous marriage, Stephanie Camire, of Exeter, NH, and Nancy Brunet, of South Hampton, NH. He is also survived by four stepchildren:Sandra Spescha, of Windham; Caril Schultz, Satsuma, AL; Melissa Davis, of New York; and Frank Fillion, of South Portland. Also surviving are several grandchildren, including Wayne, Nicole, Tyler, Brandy, Derek, Mark and Jennifer; and two great-grandchildren, Laura and Brooke.

Richard will be sadly missed by all.

It was his request that there be no public funeral service.

Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care of Maine, Portland.

Emily Segars
2004-12-31

Emily M. Segars,87, of New Gloucester, died December 20 at a Lewiston Nursing Home. She was born March 21,1917, to William A. and Clara (Merrill) Bridgham. She attended Poland schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.

Mrs. Segars worked at Lown and Crest Shoe for 18 years. She also worked for13 years with Concord Group Insurance Companies, retiring in 1982, and returning a year later to work part-time for another 7 years. She was a Charter Member of the Busy Bee Club of Poland (60+years); a member of Golden Sheaf Chapter 114, Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, serving as Worthy Matron several terms; a member of Hiawatha Rebekah Lodge, later affiliated with Fidelity in Auburn (50+years), a member of Androscoggin Valley Chapter of Insurance Women (International). As a member of Certified Professional Insurance Women, she was named Insurance Woman of the Year in 1982.

She served as a volunteer at the New Gloucester News since 1983.

Mrs. Segars is survived by three sons, Ronald and his wife Marilyn, of MA, Roger, of Brunswick, and Charles and his wife Linda, of New Gloucester; seven grandsons, six great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons, two great-great-granddaughters two step-grandsons, four step-great-grandsons and two step-great-granddaughters.

A funeral was held at the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester; committal will be in the spring, with Reverend Linda Gard officiating.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
