David E. Swett
2004-04-15

David Edwin Swett, 70, a resident of Southport passed away Friday, April 9, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Born April 15, 1934 in Bath, he was a son of Leon and Lillian Ryder Swett.

Mr. Swett was one of 14 children and lived in Southport all of his life.

For 44 years, he worked as a maintenance person at Ocean Gate in Southport. During the winter months he worked as a carpenter.

Mr. Swett loved and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; he was a devoted family man.

He was predeceased by his wife, Deborah Thompson Swett of 33 years who passed away February 10, 2004

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa and husband Richard Bond of Waldoboro; three sons, Jeffrey Rice and wife Bridgett of Nicholson, Ga., Scott Rice and Ann Martin of Boothbay Harbor, and Leslie Swett and Cristy Deschesne of Rockland; sisters, Ida Swett Haas of Randolph, Vt., and Agnes Swett Morin of New Jersey; two brothers, John Swett of Westbrook, and Frank Swett of Alabama; and 10 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, April 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay. There will be a private family burial at the Oceanview cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay

Ellen Safford
2005-04-14

Ellen (Martin) Safford, 88, of Boothbay Harbor, died Saturday, April 9, at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Safford was born in Dexter, Maine, in 1915. She grew up on a certified seed growing potato farm on the outskirts of town and graduated from N.H. Fay High School. She dreamed of becoming a nurse when she was growing up and attended a nursing school in Biddeford for a short time.

In 1939 she married Henry Safford. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1989 and were married for 61 years before his death in 2000. In 1943 they moved to Boothbay Harbor. She had several jobs including housecleaning for summer residents on Squirrel Island. In the early '50s she opened Ellen's Dress.

After retiring, she and her husband traveled a lot, usually planning trips that included visits with relatives or some of the many, many friends she had made through the years.

Mr. and Mrs. Safford were members of the Southport Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for many years. They both sang in a community chorus, the Choralaires for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry; and sister, Evelyn Pearl.

Survivors include her sister, Maxine Lynch of Fairfax, Va.; nieces, Dayle Ashby and husband Robert of Winthrop, and Deanne Brown and husband Jim of Shapleigh; and several grandnieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 13 at Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay with Al Roberts officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, 4 Oak St. Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Helen I. Savage
2005-09-08

Helen I. Savage, 82, of Bath, died Tuesday, August 30, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Pownal on April 5, 1923, she was a daughter of Maurice and Lina (Proctor) Snow.

On August 29, 1943 she married Gerald V. Savage. She was employed by Congress Sportswear for a number of years until her retirement.

Mrs. Savage was a member of Degree of Pocohantas for over 60 years. She enjoyed knitting, reading, puzzles and the Boston Red Sox and her biggest love was her cat, Cindy.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald V. Savage on March 17, 2001 and four brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Diane L. Savage and her companion Don Munsey of Dresden; one son, James E. Savage and his wife Shirley of Wiscasset; a sister, Marion Hashey of South Portland; a brother, Donald Snow and his wife Charlotte of Naples, Fla.; sister-in-law, Jane Snow of Scarborough; five grandchildren, Robin Whorff and her husband James of West Bath, Lena Kingston and her husband Sean of Wiscasset, James G. Savage and his wife Pamela of Topsham, Jessica Savage and Jennifer Savage of Wiscasset; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was be held Saturday, September 3 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.

Barbara Shelton
2005-01-06

Barbara Shelton, 94, a resident of Boothbay, died Friday, December 31, 2004, at St. Andrews Hospital after a brief illness.

Born January 29, 1910 in Norwood, Mass., she was the daughter of Percy and Letina Holden Roberts. She is a graduate of Norwood High School, class of 1927, and Boston University with a degree in chemistry. She was a Secretary Chemist at El Patch Company in Stoneham, Mass. from 1931-1933

Mrs. Shelton taught chemistry, physics, and math at Mt. Ida Junior College in Newton, Mass. from 1933-1935. from 1944-1946, She taught elementary and grammar school in Southport.

She was the head librarian at the Wiscasset Public Library from 1954-1986 and contributed to the weekly column "From the Librarian's Desk" for the local newspapers. She used to take her little goat "Bonky" on a leash to the library. After the goat passed away she then brought her dog "Silky" with her. In 1986 she retired from the library.

Mrs. Shelton loved to play the violin. In 1954 she was the first violist in the Lincoln County Orchestra in Newcastle. From 1953 to 1956, she played in the Lippman String Quartette, and from 1965- 1973 she played the violin for the Portland Symphony Orchestra.

In 1971 her history was published in the 2000 Women of Achievement, London, England, a biographical record of most distinguished achievements through out the world.

She was a member of the St. Philips Episcopal Church Choir in Wiscasset from 1967- 1976.

Mrs. Shelton had a great sense of humor. She was an avid reader and wrote children's stories, and translated fairy tales.

Mrs. Shelton had many professional affiliations which included, Board of Trustees, Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and secretary of board from 1964 to 1968; president of the Maine Library Association, 1967-1968; Executive Council, 1967-1970; Choralaines of Boothbay Harbor; Amateur Chamber Music Players; Zeta Tau Alpha; and the Lincoln County Cultural and Historical Association.

Mrs. Shelton is predeceased by one son, Marc Shelton; and one granddaughter, Janet Marie Shelton, in 1984; two brothers, Colin Roberts and Cedric Roberts.

Survivors include son, Lee Shelton and wife Marilyn of Boothbay Harbor; one grandaughter, Sherry Lully of Brunswick; one great- grandson, Mark Cromwell of Westport; two great-great-grand-children, Garry and Tiara Cromwell of Augusta; and many nieces and nephews

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, at the St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 12 Hodge Road in Wiscasset, with the Rev. Ann Lovejoy Johnson officiating.

Donations may be made in memory of Barbara Shelton to the St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 12 Hodge Road, Wiscasset, ME 04576; Wiscasset Public Library, High Street, Wiscasset, ME 04576; or Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Gerald C. Sherman
2005-12-08

Gerald "Gerry" Clifton Sherman, 83, of Wiscasset, died Monday, December 5, at the home of his daughter Jayne Stockford and her husband Alvin in Alna.

Born in Wiscasset on June 26, 1922, he was the third son of Harold and Florence (Matthews) Sher-man.

Mr. Sherman graduated from Wiscasset Academy where he was active in baseball and basketball. He attended Maine Central Institution in Pittsfield where he also played baseball, basketball and football. Later he joined his brothers Stan and Walter playing baseball and basketball for the Wiscasset Town teams.

On December 31, 1942 he married Emily Riley. He was a partner in the family owned business, The Wiscasset Lumber Company with his parents and two brothers for over 40 years. On August 20, 1966 he married Sharon Wedge.

Mr. Sherman served the town of Wiscasset as a selectman, a member of the planning board, an ambulance attendant and until 1967, he was chief of the fire department. He was a member of Masons in Wiscasset, and enjoyed playing golf with his two brothers.

He was predeceased by his wife Emily Sherman in 1963, one great- granddaughter, Nicole Pinkham; and by one brother, Stan Sherman.

Survivors include two daughters, Jayne Stockford and her husband Alvin of Alna, and Robin Chesser and her husband David of Florida; two sons, David Sherman of Gray and Dana Sherman of Florida; one brother, Walter Sherman and his wife Sally of Wiscasset; five grandchildren, Toby Stockford, Tina Pinkham, Adrienne Chesser, Hope Chesser and Faith Chesser; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 10 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with the Rev. John Potter officiating. Burial will be in Old Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 630 Congress Street, P.O. Box 1134, Portland, ME 04104.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Philip Simard, brother of Gray residents, dies unexpectedly in W
2005-04-01

Philip Simard, Sr., died unexpectedly on March 26. He was 40.

Simard will be remembered as a man who loved his job and the people at the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook and the staff at the Animal Emergency Clinic on Warren Avenue. He had been a member of the Portland Police Department for 15 years.

He received a Unit Citation in 1999 for his devotion to duty, and in September 2002 received recognition from the Portland Police Department for "...dedicated and loyal service to the Department and the citizens of the City of Portland".

He is survived by a brother, David F. Simard, and a sister, Tammy J. Burrington and her husband Harold, all of Gray; three sons, his fiance, his parents, two other brothers and two other sisters, and an extensisve extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. Simard's name to the Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater Street, Westbrook, ME 04092.

Jeremiah L. Simmons
2005-03-31

Jeremiah Linden Simmons, 6 weeks old, of Woolwich, died Wednesday, March 23, at Maine Medical Center.

Born in Portland on February 9, he was a son of Todd A. and Heather N. (Colby) Simmons.

Jeremiah is survived by his parents, Heather and Todd Simmons; three brothers, Jacob P. Reynolds, Andrew T. Simmons and Peter B. Simmons; two sisters, Brittany N. Simmons and Rachel J. Simmons, all of Woolwich; his paternal grandparents, Linden and Peggy Simmons of Wiscasset; his maternal grandparents, Brian Colby of Bath and Roxanna Johnson and her husband Larry of Oak Ridge, Missouri; his maternal great-grand-parents, Robert and Margaret Colby of Boothbay, and Melvin Nading of Wyoming; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, March 25 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Topsham. A gathering of family and friends followed in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements were by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home of Bath.

Kristi B. Simmons
2005-08-04

Kristi B. Simmons, 34, of Southport passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 30, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on May 26, 1971, she was the daughter of Raymond A. and Loretta B. Bryer Emerson. A 1989 graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School and a 1993 graduate of Maine State Academy of Hair Design, after graduation she worked with great talent at Oasis Day Spa for many years.

She loved her family and friends with her whole being and would always be there with support when they needed her.

A few of the things she loved most were spending time with her husband, Steven and daughter, Allie collecting sea glass and picking blueberries.

Survivors include her loving husband of nine years, Steve of Southport, one daughter, Allison Nicole Simmons of Southport; her mother and father, Loretta and Ray Emerson of Boothbay Harbor; a brother, Jim Emerson and his wife Chrissy of Fairfax, Va.; father-in-law, Harold W. Simmons of Southport; mother-in-law, Debbie Tukey and her husband, Craig of Southport; aunts, Penny Bryer of Edgecomb, and Linda Masciadri and her husband Tony of Hallowell; uncle, Jim Bryer and his wife Corrinne of Boothbay; brother-in-law, Richard Simmons and his wife Laurie of Boothbay; nephews, Jake, Linc and Shawn Simmons of Boothbay, and Corey and Jimmy Emerson of Fairfax, Va.

A time of visitation with family will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, August 4, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 5 at the Charles E. Sherman American Legion Hall in Boothbay with Al Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Kristi's memory to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Boothbay.
