Jeremiah L. Simmons
2005-03-31

Jeremiah Linden Simmons, 6 weeks old, of Woolwich, died Wednesday, March 23, at Maine Medical Center.

Born in Portland on February 9, he was a son of Todd A. and Heather N. (Colby) Simmons.

Jeremiah is survived by his parents, Heather and Todd Simmons; three brothers, Jacob P. Reynolds, Andrew T. Simmons and Peter B. Simmons; two sisters, Brittany N. Simmons and Rachel J. Simmons, all of Woolwich; his paternal grandparents, Linden and Peggy Simmons of Wiscasset; his maternal grandparents, Brian Colby of Bath and Roxanna Johnson and her husband Larry of Oak Ridge, Missouri; his maternal great-grand-parents, Robert and Margaret Colby of Boothbay, and Melvin Nading of Wyoming; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, March 25 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Topsham. A gathering of family and friends followed in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements were by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home of Bath.

David Leroy Simmons
2005-07-07

David Leroy Simmons, 68, of Dresden, passed away Tuesday, June 28, at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

Born November 24, 1936 in Rockland, he was the son of Paul and Margaret Johnson Simmons, also a stepson of Louise Simmons.

In 1955 he graduated of the Waldoboro High School After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Lewis Hancock DD-675 for two years. Mr. Simmons married Ersel Atkinson and together they raised two daughters while he attended the University of Southern Maine graduating with a degree in business. They were married for 25 years.

After graduation he went to work for Bath Iron Works beginning his career as a welder and retiring after 30 years as foreman.

He made his home in Dresden with his longtime companion, Edwina Costello.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing and loved to watch sports on television.

Mr. Simmons attended many reunions of the USS Lewis Hancock. He was a 25-year member of the Bath Elks Lodge #934 in Bath.

Survivors include his daughters, Ginger Chartier and her husband, David, and Sherri Simmons and her husband Rick Grover; grandchildren, D.J. and Nathan Chartier, Allen Simmons and Savannah Simmons-Grover, all of Woolwich.

A celebration of life was held at Friday, July 1 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Simmons memory to the American Diabetes Association, Maine Division, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 98R, Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements were under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Robert D. Sisco
2005-04-28

Robert D. Sisco, 82, of Pleasanton, Calif., formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died unexpectedly at home Thursday, April 7.

Raised in Warren Point, N.J., he was the son of Harry and Frances Sisco.

From September 1942 through August 1945, he was enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He attended the U.S.C.G. Academy and was commissioned an officer in 1944. He was captain of the U.S.C.G. ship, Daphne, and served at Normandy on D-Day, performing rescue work.

Former President of the National Parks and Recreation Association, he was also a member of the American Legion and the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Anne; and children, JoAnn Schlachter (James), Mark Sisco (Marta), and Jane Jamieson (Bruce).

Memorial services were held at the Pleasanton Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 15. Mr. Sisco will be laid to rest in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Contributions may be sent in Mr. Siscos memory to the American Legion, Industrial Park Road, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04537.

Lauris Skilling passes away
2005-04-22

Lauris Skilling died peacefully Saturday Morning April 16, surrounded by her family at Cedars Nursing Care Center after a long and courageous fight with lung disease.

Lauris Jean Grant Skilling was born in Portland, Maine on June 27, 1930, the daughter of Sheldon S. and Winona Davis Grant. She attended the Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1947.

Lauris owned and operated her own beauty shop in Gray for several years before opening one in her home in Windham. She was employed by the Portland School System, including working as the executive secretary for the business manager.

She married her husband Carlton on October 20, 1984, and loved their large family and many friends. They enjoyed going to activities together at the American Legion Post # 86 in Gray, the Shriners, and the First Congregational Church of Gray. They particularly enjoyed their bus trips with Carlton's brother Bobby and his wife Cora. Lauris was a member of the Eastern Star for many years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and gardening.

Lauris was predeceased by her mother, father, and sister, Margaret Russo.

Surviving is her loving husband of twenty years, Carlton Skilling, of Gray, Carlton's daughters Carol West and her husband John, Cathy Grannell and her husband Steve, and Lori Skilling; sisters ;Beatrice Grant Crawford of Gray, and Sandra Grant Scruton and her husband John of Farmington, New Hampshire; an aunt, Alice Davis Tessier of Wilmington, Delaware; grandchildren, Adam West, and Molly and Ben Grannell; nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.

Visitation was held on Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home, and a memorial service was held on Thursday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, Yarmouth Road, Gray. Reverend Douglas Hedstrom and Reverend John Scruton officiated the service. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Gray, P.O. Box 155, Gray, Maine 04039.

Alice Slade
2005-07-14

Alice Slade, 86, of Boothbay, died at home on Sunday, July 9.

Born on the family farm in Naugatuck, Conn. in 1918, she graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1936.

Successful in residential real estate, most notably with Settani Associates, she also inaugurated the Peddlers Market in Naugatuck in 1983.

For many years she was a captain for the Red Cross Blood Drives. After retiring to Maine in 1981, she continued to serve her community as a volunteer at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Always an independent woman, she designed and supervised the building of her home in Boothbay when she was 78. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Duncan W. Slade and Gayle Fraas of Edgecomb; daughter, Diane S. Slade of Napa, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Donalyn and Eli Cohen of Brookline, Mass.; granddaughters, Liza Cohen, Erika Cohen and Tali Cohen; sister, Ruth Bontempo of Nobleboro; and brother, Bill Schildgen of Oroville, Wash.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mrs. Slade's life at her home at 75 Highfields, Boothbay, on Sat., July 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Donations in her memory can be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, Miles Development Office 35 Miles St., Damariscotta, ME 04543; or The American Red Cross, 9 Bank St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

James E. Slaughter
2005-04-28

James E. Slaughter, 95, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, April 21 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

He formerly worked for Sun Chemical Corporation as a marketing executive in the printing division. He had a second career in public relations and photography after he retired.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Loena Slaughter of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Jacqueline Mundy and her husband Peter of West Boothbay Harbor; two sons, James E. Slaughter, Jr. of Houston, Texas and Stephen Slaughter of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a brother, Thomas Slaughter and his wife Sue of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two sisters, Avis Smith and her husband Gene of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carol Bauman of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren: Peter P. Mundy and his wife Ellen of Natick, Mass., and Margaret Cowe of Weston, Mass.; and five great- grandsons.

He was predeceased by two sisters; Dorothy Pitt and Marie Lonneman; brother, George Slaughter; and granddaughter, Lauren Slaughter.

A memorial service was held Monday, April 25 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Dr. Sarah Foulger officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Lauren Slaughter Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o J. Mundy, P.O. Box 56, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Boothbay.

Lorraine C. Smalley
2005-09-29

Lorraine C. Smalley, 74, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born on March 4, 1931, in Belfast, she was the daughter of Henry Collins and Ethel Mae Brown Collins. She grew up there and attended local schools.

On June 16, 1949, she married Kenneth A Smalley.

Mrs. Smalley worked at the Strand Movie Theatre in Boothbay Harbor. She also worked as a cook in Boothbay Region for many years.

She attended the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist church and was a member of the United Methodist Women Club. She loved reading, playing games, her cats, and traveling.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her husband Kenneth Smalley.

Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Johnson; and a son, Kerry Smalley, both of Boothbay; one grandson, Jason Johnson, of Beverly, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Sunday, September 25 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, with Pastor Carol Stevens officiating. Burial was in the Grove cemetery in Belfast.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, 75 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; or Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Boothbay.

Nancy B. Sortwell
2005-03-24

Nancy Bascom Sortwell, 88, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, March 19, in a fire at her home.

She was a native of St. Louis, Mo. and spent most of her life in the Boston area. She served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross in England during World War II and was active in volunteer activities with the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston.

On November 29, 1947 she married Daniel R. Sortwell. In 1998 they made Wiscasset their permanent home.

Mrs. Sortwell enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and antique collecting.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Daniel R. Sortwell of Wiscasset; two sons, Daniel R. Sortwell Jr. of Clemmons, N.C., and Terry Sortwell of Camden; one daughter, Cynthia Sortwell of South Portland; two grandchildren, Joseph Sortwell of Colorado and Julia Sortwell of Camden; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Bascom of St. Louis, Mo.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 23 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery in Wiscasset in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
