Lois S. Streett
2005-04-14

Lois Stevens Streett, 85, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, April 6 of acute leukemia.

The daughter of Donald R. and Lois Carver Stevens, she was born in Akron, Ohio on July 9, 1919 and raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey where she graduated from high school. After earning her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College in 1941, she taught at the Brearley School in New York City before marrying Robert Andrew Streett in 1943 at Ridgewood. Following World War II, the couple moved to Fly Creek, New York where they operated a farm for 34 years.

Mrs. Streett managed the business operations for the farm and was a devoted community volunteer, serving as director of the Red Cross blood drive operations in Northern Otsego County for many years. Her involvement extended to the Red Cross regional volunteer organization in Central New York State and she authored a nationally distributed manual on managing volunteer services. She served on the first planning board for the Town of Otsego and was a catechism teacher at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake, as well as a substitute teacher in local schools. She also completed graduate work in English through the State University of New York College at Oneonta.

In 1980, the Streetts retired to St. Simons Island, Georgia. A few years later, they built a summer home in South Thomaston. Mrs. Streett continued her volunteer work at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, where she assisted with the accessioning process and served on the museum's board of directors. In Maine, she utilized her accessioning skills at the Farnsworth Art Museum for several summers.

Mr. and Mrs. Streett were avid travelers, completing numerous cruises on ocean freighters on both coasts of South America, in Asia and the South Pacific, and the Mediterranean region.

Robert Streett died in 1988.

While traveling in Newfoundland 1993, Mrs. Streett met George W. Patch of Boothbay Harbor. Together they traveled extensively in Canada and made their home in St. Simons Island and Boothbay Harbor where Mrs. Streett worked with the Boothbay Region Historical Society. She received numerous service awards for her volunteer contributions throughout her life, culminating in the Paul Harris Award from the Boothbay Rotary in 2002. Mrs. Streett moved recently to Thornton Hall in Brunswick.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Hamrick of St. Louis and Dory Streett, of Bowdoinham, and their husbands, William S. Hamrick and David Mention; four grandsons, Robert and Mark Hamrick, and Andy and Kit Mention; and her brother, Donald Read Stevens.

Services were held Sunday, April 10 at the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at the Edgecomb Town Hall. A gathering followed at the residence of George Patch in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were under the care of Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond.

Richard D. Strumsky
2005-04-21

Richard D. Strumsky Sr., 78, of Westport Island, died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at his residence.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on November 8, 1926, he was a son of Dominic and Patricia (Westfield) Strumsky.

Mr. Strumsky entered the Army Air Corp and served in the Korean Conflict as a radio engineer.

On September 19, 1964 he married Joanne Taylor and they resided in Medway, Mass. until moving to Westport Island in 1993.

He was a 30-year member of the Framingham Local Carpenters Union.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, gardening, stonework and woodworking.

Mr. Strumsky was predeceased by his wife, Joanne Strumsky on August 23, 1993; and one sister, Ruth Strumsky Coleman in 1962.

Survivors include two sons, Richard D. Strumsky Jr. of Westport Island, and John P. Strumsky of Orange, Texas; two daughters, Debbie Strumsky of Cambridge, Mass., and Gail Hamel and her husband Charles of Framingham, Mass.; one grandson, Daniel R. Hamel; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were Wednesday, April 20 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Sarah J. Stuart
2005-05-19

Sarah J. Stuart, 57, died with her family by her side, on Saturday, May 7 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on May 21, 1947 in Concord, Mass., she was the daughter of Leonard Maliska and Jane (MacKnight) Maliska. She graduated from Camden High School and later received a diploma in college courses along with certification from the Katherine Gibbs School in Providence, R.I.

On September 11, 1971, she married James Edward Stuart, and in 1974, they moved to Burlington, Vt. as part of an employment transfer.

For 11 years, she was a stay-at-home mom, and volunteered in the kindergarten classroom and the library at her daughters' school. She also taught Sunday school at Calvary Episcopal Church in Underhill while serving on the Altar Guild, Search Committee, the Vestry and was the editor of the newsletter. Once the family moved to Colchester, she served on the Vestry and Search Committee at St. James Episcopal Church in Essex Junction.

In 1985, Mrs. Stuart went back to work part-time at Vermont Children's Aid Society as an administrative assistant, and later worked in the Mortgage Dept. of the Vermont Federal Bank, now Chittenden Bank. In November of 2000, she transferred into the Corporate Human Resources Employment Group at the Chittenden, where she was employed until she took medical leave in January of 2005.

Mrs. Stuart was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 1999, at which time she underwent treatment. In 2004, she suffered a recurrence.

She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Capitol Island in Southport, as well as attending hot rod shows with her lifelong partner James with their 1934 Ford Coupe.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, James Edward; two daughters, Melissa Jane of Colchester, and Jennifer Davis and husband Silas Wells II of Georgia; two granddaughters, Hailey Marie Blondin of Colchester and Cassidy Davis Wells of Georgia; her mother, Jane Brooks Maliska of Swanton; brother, Leonard Maliska Jr. and his wife Patricia who serve as missionaries in Cambodia; her mother-in-law, Loretta Stuart, sister-in-law, Jeanne Stuart Munz and her husband Stephen; brother-in-law, Thomas Paul Stuart, all of Valhalla, N.Y.; nieces, nephews and many special friends.

She was predeceased by her father, Leonard Maliska in May 2004, and her father-in-law, Harold Stuart in September 1997.

A committal service will be held at the family's convenience in Southport.

Contributions in Mrs. Stuart's memory may be made to the Breast Care Center at the Fletcher Allen, UHC Campus, 1 So. Prospect St., Burlington, VT 05401, or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, VT-NH Affiliate, P.O. Box 2496, Manchester Center, VT 05255.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

Marjorie F. Sullivan
2005-12-15

Marjorie (Mardi) Fish Sullivan, 81, a native of Boothbay Harbor and longtime resident of Montgomery, Ala., died Wednesday, December 7 in Daphne, Ala.

Mrs. Sullivan was a career Civil Service employee, traveling extensively with her family throughout Europe and the U.S.

She was predeceased by her parents, Capt. Raymond N. and Anna (Drysdale) Fish' and her brother and sister-in-law, Capt. Robert N. and Jean Fish, all from Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, James J. Sullivan of Daphne, Ala.; her children, Stephany (Paul Jr.) Hannon of Fairhope, Ala., and Dr. J. Gregory (Paula) Sullivan of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren, Paul (PJ) Hannon III, Marjorie Hannon, Connor Sullivan, Cole Sullivan and Cooper Sullivan; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Saturday, December 10 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home and a private graveside service followed at Memory Gardens of Fairhope, Ala.

Arrangements were by Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Homes & Crematory, 19698 So. Greeno Rd., Fairhope, AL 36532.

Joseph C. Swensen
2005-05-19

Joseph Cadwallader Swensen, 91, died Monday, May 9, at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born June 15, 1913 in Provo, Utah, he was the son of John and Margaret Davis Swensen.

Mr. Swensen graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1935, and from Fordham University Law School, New York in 1953.

From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed sports and tennis, gardening, travel, and reading.

He is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Verna H. Swensen.

Survivors include two sons, Fred C. Swensen of South Carolina and Paul H. Swensen of Utah; one daughter, Kathryn Swensen Thomson of Boothbay Harbor; and five grandchildren.

There will be no services at his request. Interment will be in Utah.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Charlotte A. Swope
2005-06-09

Charlotte Anne Swope, 87, formerly of Roland Park, Baltimore, Md., died Tuesday, May 31, at Falmouth By the Sea.

Born in Philadelphia, Penn. on March 1, 1918, she was the daughter of George Everett and Charlotte Ann (Tibbets) Tomkinson.

She graduated from Germantown Friends School and Wheaton College. After college she worked in public relations and as assistant treasure for the Philadelphia Philly's baseball club.

In 1945 she married Carey B. Swope and moved to Baltimore, Md. where she spent most of her life until moving to Maine in 2002 to be near her son and his family.

She was a board member of the Junior League of Baltimore, a docent for the Baltimore Museum of Art, and treasurer of Young Audiences of Maryland. She was active in the garden club at both the local and state level, and helped make Clyburn Park become a national Audubon Sanctuary and outdoor classroom for city students. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Roland Park, and Landscape Design Critics Council. She was a communicant of the Church of the Redeemer.

She enjoyed art, traveling, music and nature, spent every year of her life at her cottage on Juniper Point in West Boothbay Harbor.

Locally she was a member of the Boothbay Region Art Gallery, the Boothbay Region Garden Club and was in the chorus of the Lincoln County Arts Festival. She was an active member of the Juniper Point Village Improvement Society.

Survivors include her son, Carey B. Swope Jr. of Cape Elizabeth, his wife Ann (Callahan), and two granddaughters, Katherine Anne Swope of Boston, Mass. and Lucy Alice Swope of New York City.

Mrs. Swope was predeceased by her husband, her brother Henry Lewellyn, and sister-in-law Margaret (Cook) Tomkinson.

A family memorial service is planned for July to take place at the All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church, Southport and on Juniper Point.

Mrs. Swope requested that memorial donations be made to either The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210 or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are being made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland.

Walter H. Symonds Jr.
2005-05-05

Walter "Spitz" Harrison Symonds Jr., 87, of Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, April 24 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born January 25, 1918 in Gloucester, Mass., he was the son of Walter H. and Eliza Parkhurst Symonds.

In earlier years, he summered in New Harbor. After graduating from Gloucester High School, he married Elizabeth Jenkins of Boothbay Harbor. He worked at the Hyde Windlass as an apprentice maintenance man and at the Bath Iron Works as an electrician.

At the age of 21 he was drafted into the Army and became part of the 169th Combat Engineers, Company which served throughout the European Theater in World War II wherever their engineering skills were needed. He served for over two years, and the full account of his military experience is recorded in "Heroes Among Us" by Sarah Sherman.

After the war Mr. Symonds worked for the First National Chain of Supermarkets for 35 years, working his way up from meat cutting to supervising the butchering department. After retiring from the First National, he and his wife made their home in Boothbay Harbor where they owned and operated the Four Winds Restaurant. For 14 years he was manager of the maintenance crew at the Boothbay Harbor Inn.

He was an active member of the American Legion in Boothbay for 60 years. He was past Grand Master of the Seaside Lodge #144 in East Boothbay.

He is predeceased by his wife Betty, daughter Brenda Wakelin, and sisters Eleanor Ascher and Dorothy Symonds.

Survivors include his grandson, William Wakelin of East Boothbay; a nephew, John P. Ascher of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a cousin, Muriel Lowe Giles of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, with Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Nancy O. Szabo
2005-09-16

Nancy Orlando, 57, of San Diego, CA, passed away August 17 at Thornton Hospital in San Diego.

She is survived by her sister, Altana Duclos, of Gray.

Mrs. Szabo was born in Portland, the daughter of Henry S. and Imogene Orlando, and graduated from Portland High School in 1967.

In 1973, she and her husband Peter moved to California, where she was self-employed as an interior decorator.

In addition to her parents and sister, she is survived by brothers Richard, of Portland, Gerard, of Hyannis, MA, and John, of Quincy, MA; another sister, Elizabeth Orlando, of Portland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A remembrance Mass was held at St. Joseph's Church in Portland on Friday, September 16, at 10 A.M.
