Asa D. Tupper Jr.

Asa D. Tupper Jr.

Asa D. Tupper Jr., 80, died suddenly Friday, February 6 at Maine Medical Center.

Born January 24, 1924, he was the son of Asa D. Tupper and Elizabeth M. Tupper.

He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1941. In March 1943, he was married to Norma Neilson.

For 43 years, he worked for Sample's Shipyard as a painter, retiring in 1979.

During World War II, he served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Temporary Reserve. He patrolled the waters off the shores of the Boothbay region several times each week as a crew to Frank Sample Jr. Forty years later, he was awarded the American Theatre Medal and World War II Victory Medal by Admiral Jack Hayes, former Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. and Mrs. Tupper operated Tupper's Antiques for over 30 years. They started in their home where he restored and refinished furniture. He was a talented artisan. They were both avid collectors and attended many auctions. He was often called upon to appraise antiques because of his extensive knowledge. For many years they operated both Tupper's Antiques and the Second Shop.

As a young man, Mr. Tupper was a skilled fly fisherman who tied his own flies and lures. He wrote several articles on sport fishing. He also enjoyed hunting with his beagle, Sniff. His hobbies included woodcarving, specializing in seabirds and old fashioned toy animals, and painting sailing ships and seascapes, many of which were sold in their Boothbay Harbor shop.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Pam Murray of Boothbay Harbor and Holly Tupper of Edgecomb; one granddaughter, Becky Richards of Yarmouth; one grandson, Ben Murray of Portland; one great-grandson, Nathan Murray; one brother, Stan Tupper of Boothbay Harbor; two sisters, Elizabeth Nichols of Augusta and Gloria Chaplin of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Naples; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother and father and two brothers, Cyrus R. Tupper II and Calvin Tupper.

At the request of the family, there will be no funeral service. Friends may contribute to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Box 280 Boothbay, ME 04537 in his memory.

Beverly Anne Thibodeau
1998-09-24

Beverly Anne Thibodeau, 67, Boothbay Harbor, died Sept. 19 at St. Andrew's Hospital.

She was born here, a daughter of Gerald and Hazel Clifford Pinkham, and attended local schools.

She picked shrimp in many local fisheries, and also was employed as a chambermaid and worked at the Strand Theatre.

She was also a homemaker while she brought up her children.

Mrs. Thibodeau enjoyed dancing, music, her apple tree, gatherings with family and friends, riding on old country roads, shopping and especially loved being out in the sun. She was always the first to get a tan. She was also known as an excellent cook.

A son, Rocky Thibodeau, died in 1979.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Thibodeau of Boothbay Harbor, one son, Thomas of Freedom; two daughters, Darcy Page of Boothbay Harbor and Darleen Pooler of Wiscasset; six sisters, Shirley Young of Gloucester, Mass., Geraldine Blake and Sandra Barter, both of Boothbay Harbor, Janet Peters and Dilys Tedford, both of Boothbay Harbor, and Roberta Chubbuck of Edgecomb; six brothers, Raymond and Daryl Pinkham, both of Edgecomb, Gerald and Gary both of Boothbay Harbor, and Larry and Roger Pinkham, both of Boothbay; and several grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Sept. 22 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, the Rev. Allen Wells-Goodwin officiated.

Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are by Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home.

John G. Thorpe
2001-03-01

John G. Thorpe, Sr. 86, of Newcastle, a master boatbuilder and enthusiastic sailor, died Tuesday, February 13 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Christmas Cove, a son of Willard N. and Kathleen Geyer Thorpe. He graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel and received a bachelor of science degree in physics from Bowdoin College in 1937.

After graduating from Bowdoin, Mr. Thorpe entered the Army where he received the rank of sergeant. During World War II, he served in the Philippines and in Europe where he worked with the Army Corps of Engineers building and reconstructing bridges. While still in the service, he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

He learned boatbuilding from his father, Willard N. Thorpe, who built boats and cottages professionally at Christmas Cove.

Mr. Thorpe's projects included the Friendship Sloop Ellie T., launched in 1960 in Christmas Cove. Aboard the Ellie T., with a crew of children and his son-in-law, Paul Bryant, Mr. Thorpe once won the Friendship Sloop Society's Governor's Trophy.

In the late 60s, he built a catboat--a traditional New England gaff-rigged fishing boat--to his own design. He also sailed with the Christmas Cove Club fleet, a summer community group.

In 1942, he married the former Eleanor Carleton Godfrey in Gardner, Mass.

For a time immediately following college, he was a performer with the Gardner Theater Guild, where he played Elwood P. Dowd in "Harvey" and starred with his wife in "Bertha the Beautiful Typewriter Girl."

In 1956, the Thorpes moved to Bath, and in 1986 to Newcastle.

Mr. Thorpe was employed by Bath Iron Works from 1956 to 1978 as a superintendent of industrial production.

He was a member and supporter of the Winter Street Congregational Church, Bath, and the North Woolwich Methodist Church. He served as president of the Pine Tree Girl Scout Council and was active with the Boy Scout Council in Bath. He also served on the Woolwich Planning Board, as well as the Solid Waste Sitting Committee.

For the last 10 years, Mr. Thorpe cared for his wife who has Alzheimer's disease.

A daughter, Katie Bryant, died in 1989.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Carleton Godfrey Thorpe; two sons, John G. Jr. of Newcastle and Henry G. of Middle Haddam, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.

A celebration of his life was held Saturday, February 24 at the North Woolwich Methodist Church. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, South Bristol.

Henry S. Tholen
1999-05-06

YARMOUTH - Henry S. Tholen, 88, of Colonial Village, Falmouth, died Friday, April 23, at Brentwood Rehabilitation Center, Yarmouth from complications associated with diabetes.

He was born in Quincy, IL, son of Anna and Henry J. Tholen.

He was a graduate of Quincy College Academy and Notre Dame University where he was a drum major of the nation's oldest college marching band for four years. Later, he attended graduate school at Northwestern University in Chicago.

As a business executive, Mr. Tholen served as a financial specialist with seven internationally-known corporations including Squibb Pharmaceuticals, Florsheim Shoe Company, Elgin Watch Company and Hamilton Watch Company, home of the world's first electric watch.

He attended church at St. Mary the Virgin, Falmouth Foreside and was an avid golfer well into his early 80s.

Henry and Louise Tholen lived in South Paris on Hooper Ledge Road for a number of years, before relocating to Portland.

Surviving are his wife, Louise, of Falmouth; two daughters, Ann Louise Tholen of Allentown, PA and Jane Estelle Tholen of Freeport; and two granddaughters, Margaret Stauffer of New York City and Catherine Stauffer of Portland, OR.

Services were private at St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church, Falmouth Foreside.

Velma Wellman Perry Thompson
1998-09-24

SUMNER - Velma Wellman Perry Thompson, 88, of Kennebunkport, died Monday, September 21, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Sumner.

The daughter of the late Leslie and Nellie (Hooper) Wellman, she was born in Mexico, Maine on December 18, 1909. After graduating from Mexico High School with the class of 1927, she attended Gorham Normal School, graduating in 1929. She taught for 27 years in the Mexico schools before moving to Kennebunkport and teaching for the Kennebunk schools, retiring from there in 1971. Along with teaching the three Rs, she instilled the love of nature, especially birds, in her students.

On October 15, 1932, Velma married Bradbury Perry, who predeceased her in 1949. She later married Leslie `Bob' Thompson on June 10, 1961, who also predeceased her in 1966.

Velma filled her life with family, friends, hobbies and travel. During her lifetime she was a vital member of many clubs and organizations. She was an avid reader and bridge player.

Surviving are two children, a son Philip Perry and his wife Nicki of Terryville, Connecticut and a daughter, Sandra Farrar and her husband Gerald of Sumner; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two husbands and a son, Lee, in 1936. Her influences will be deeply missed by all.

Services were held on Wednesday, September 23 at the Mexico Congregational Church on Main Street in Mexico. Interment will be in the Demerritt Cemetery, West Peru. Those who wish may make memorial donations in Velma's memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Virginia A. Thompson
1999-06-03

SOUTH PARIS - Virginia A. Thompson, 66 of Naples died Thursday evening at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Bayside, Queens, Long Island, NY on August 27,1932, the daughter of Jacob and Blanche Mathis Denig.

She graduated from Bayside High School and secretarial school and had worked as a secretary for Dale Carnegie and several construction and building companies. She was also a substitute teacher in Dix Hills, New York. She was an avid bowler.

On April 5,1958 she married Andrew Thompson.

Survivors include her husband of Naples; one son, Bill, of Harrison, one daughter, Susan Lobsiger of Omaha, Nebraska and two grandchildren, Brianna and Alex both of Harrison.

Visiting hours were Sunday evening at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris where a funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. Interment was in Harrison Village Cemetery.

Carroll L. `Cal' Thurlow
1998-05-28

Galveston, Tx - Carroll L. `Cal' Thurlow, 70, of Edgewater, Texas, a nationally-known expert on river and ocean tides, died of a heart-related condition May 8 at the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, where he was attending meetings of the National Ocean Survey and the Port of Houston.

Mr. Thurlow was born in Oxford and settled in Takoma Park after his discharge from the Navy in 1951. He moved to Edgewater, Maryland, in 1964.

He had attended Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, American University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School. In 1973 he was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for outstanding public service in devising a new method for projecting tidal data. In 1975 he won the Department of Commerce Special Achievement Award for his outstanding performance as Chief of the Tides and Water Levels Branch of the National Oceanographic Survey. He also received eight other outstanding performance awards and the Department of Commerce Silver Medal during his career.

Mr. Thurlow was a technical advisor for the Coastal Boundary Mapping Committee of the National Oceanographic Survey, established to outline procedures and requirements for determining marine boundary lines. He was a member of the National Oceanographic Survey/U.S. Geological Survey from 1974 to 1977.

After his retirement in 1985, he became a consultant to the Blucher Institute of Surveying at the University of Corpus Christie.

Mr. Thurlow was an active member of numerous professional societies including the American Geophysical Union, American Congress of Survey and Mapping, the Hydrograhic Society, the American Water Resources Association, the Canadian Water Resources Association the International Oceanographic Foundation and the American Beach and Shore Preservation Association.

Mr. Thurlow was a member of the Sanatarium Seventh-Day Adventist Church and attended Bell Branch Seventh Day Adventist Church in Gambrill, MD.

A celebration of his life will be held on July 26, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the `Lazy M Homestead' on Curtis Hill Road, West Paris. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Isabel Brown, Sleepy Hollow Road, Bryant Pond.

Surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Davis, of Edgewater, MD, Virginia and Goldie Mason, both of West Paris and Beryl Hall, of Bryant Pond, as well as several nieces and nephews.
