Mr. Walter Irvin Thurlow
1999-07-08

SOUTH PARIS - Walter Irvin Thurlow, 76, of South Paris, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at the Market Square Health Care Center.

He was born in Surry, ME, on February 19, 1923, the son of George L. and Inez Merrill Thurlow. He lived in Mexico, ME, many years, later living in South Paris on Hooper Ledge Road.

A veteran of World War II, for 31 months he served in the Army Co. D 83rd Chemical Bn. He served in five European theaters of war. He married Dora Eris Abbott in Mexico on May 21, 1946 and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage.

He worked at Turner Motor Sales Ford Garage in Mexico for 36 years, as parts manager. He later worked at Ripley and Fletcher in South Paris retiring in 1979 due to failing health.

Most recently he had his own lawn care business serving many in the area.

He was a former member of Mexico Fire and Police Departments and Western Maine Fireman's Association. He was charter president of Mexico Lions Club, Past Chancellor Walton Lodge #142 K of P, Mexico, ME. He was involved for a time with the Boy Scouts of Mexico.

He was a member and past Commander of Foster Carroll Post #72 American Legion, South Paris. Life member of Floyd Harlow Jr. Post #9787 V.F.W. of South Paris anda member of Oxford County Nature #613-40/8.

He enjoyed working on cars and tractors, plowing snow and mowing lawns. He also enjoyed the outdoors and all of nature, watching birds and animals that came near the house. He was proud of his little home and especially his white dog, Miss-T.

He is survived by his wife of South Paris; a nephew, Larry Abbott of Hampton, NH; a great niece, Jessica Abbott, of Rochester, NH, and a brother-in-law, Arthur Abbott of South Paris.

At the families request there will be no services.

Arthur R. Tibbetts
1998-04-02

Arthur R. Tibbetts, 64, of Dresden, died Sunday, March 29 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born April 9, 1933 in Southport, he was the son of Walter A. and Lelia Parris Tibbetts. He grew up and attended schools in Boothbay Harbor and Southport.

He was a commercial lobsterman all of his life, served as harbor master in Pemaquid, and also picked shrimp and made clam hods to sell. He was also a clamdigger.

Mr. Tibbetts was a kind-hearted person who helped many people set their moorings. He loved life, outdoors, nature and freedom.

He was predeceased by brothers, Walter A. Tibbetts Jr. and James R. Tibbetts.

Survivors include three daughters, Lorna Tibbetts of Bath, Sally Tibbetts of Jefferson and June Tibbetts of Westport; a son, Aaron Tibbetts of Alna; four brothers, George Tibbetts and Albion Tibbetts of Southport, Edward Tibbetts of West Southport, and Gordon Tibbetts of Newagen; a sister, Beatrice A. Hawke of Boothbay Harbor; three grandchildren, Corrina Tibbetts and Christopher Tibbetts, both of Brunswick; and Stephen Tibbetts of Bath; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. Pastor Frank Rolfe will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Decker cemetery in Southport. Donations may be made to an Animal Shelter in your area. Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

George D. Tibbetts
1998-08-13

George Dewey Tibbetts, 74, died Sunday, August 9 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

Born April 23, 1924 in Bath, he was the son of Walter A. and Lelia Parris Tibbetts. He was a lobster fisherman all his life. He liked to hike and travel the country and enjoy spending time with his family.

Mr. Tibbetts served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was wounded in Burma during his tour of duty.

He was predeceased by a son, Edward W. Tibbetts, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Tibbetts; a daughter, Bunny Danielson; and a son, Dusty Tibbetts, all of West Southport; three brothers, Edward, Albion and Gordon of West Southport; and one sister, Beatrice Hawke of Boothbay Harbor; seven grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, August 14 at Decker cemetery in Southport. Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin will officiate.

Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Ada C. Tibbetts
1998-05-07

Ada C. Tibbetts, 80, of Millington, Tenn., formerly of East Boothbay, died Saturday, May 2 at her home.

Mrs. Tibbetts was a former cook for Boothbay Region High School.

Her husband, Clinton S. Tibbetts, died previously.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas B. Hunter of Millington and Gary H. Tibbetts of East Boothbay; a sister, Mabelle Dodge of East Boothbay; and two brothers, Russell Connor of Rockland, and Jack Connors of Taylor, Texas; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Millington, Tenn., and Friday, May 8, 2 p.m., at the East Boothbay United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Munford Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Methodist Hospice Alliance.

Trisha Tita
1999-07-01

On Monday, June 7, Trisha Tita of Juniper Point and Florida, 47, passed away in her sleep at home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. She was the wife of Bill Barton and the mother of Billy, Sarah, Lisa and Alexandra.

Trisha spent most of the past 20 summers in Boothbay Harbor indulging her deep affection for the natural beauty of the region, the many activities that she enjoyed, the close friends that surrounded her, and the family that came through her screen door. She enjoyed sailing off Fisherman's Island, boating to Monhegan, osprey watching in Oven's Mouth, whirlpooling through Hell's Gates, taking her kids to the Southport Yacht Club, bicycling around West Harbor, visiting the aquarium at the Fish Hatchery, rushing the net in a doubles game and chairing the Juniper Point junior tennis activities.

When she became sick with cancer in February, she had hoped to return to Boothbay this summer.

A sociology major at West Virginia University, Trisha studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and received her Masters degree in museum management from Greenwich University in London. The middle child of Michael and Helen, she is survived by her mother, sister Karen, brother Michael, loving in-laws, nieces and nephews, and special friends.

The family asks that gifts in her memory be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, to the Juniper Point Village Improvement Society or to the Boothbay Region Land Trust. A memorial service will be held later this summer on Juniper Point.

Karen Jane Tonjes

Karen Jane Tonjes, age 43, died Wednesday, August 11 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn., after a battle with lung cancer. Ms. Tonjes was a resident of New York City, N.Y. and formerly of Yardley and Newtown, Penn.

Ms. Tonjes was born on July 1, 1956 in Pittsburgh, Penn. She graduated in 1973 from Council Rock High School, Bucks County, Penn.

For two years she attended Temple University and graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She held a position at Columbia University Doctoral Program for Japanese Business and Economy. She was trained in the Actors and Directors Studio Lab, the Herbert Berghof Studio and New York Performance Works. Previously affiliated with The Ford Modeling Company, Ms. Tonjes appeared in national commercials and in the theater.

Among many other talents, she was an avid equestrian, an educated chef and baker, and an accomplished musician on the flute, piccolo and recorder.

Survivors include her mother, Judi Wagner-Schaeberle of East Boothbay and Fernandina Beach, Florida; her brother, Konrad Wagner of Medford, New Jersey; and her niece and nephew, Caroline and Cameron Wagner.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 14 at the Bradley Funeral Home, Route 73 and Evesham Road, Marlton, New Jersey. Interment was private.

Donations in Ms. Tonjes memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Clayton O. Totman
1998-09-17

Brigadier General Clayton O. Totman, died Sun., Sept. 13, at Shore Village Nursing Center, in Rockland. He was born Feb. 25, 1914 in Conway, Mass., the son of Francis W. and Annie B. Smith Totman. He matriculated from Greenville High School in 1931. He entered the University of Maine and graduated, with a B.S. in Forestry. While at the University of Maine, he was distinguished Cadet Commanding officer with the rank of Major.

He was all Maine tackle on the University of Maine Football Team and a Javelin Thrower for the U of M Track Team. He received a direct commission in the United States Marine Corps because of his outstanding Cadet leadership. He held a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 13th Infantry at Fort Devens, Mass. a part of the 5th infantry. He was a company Commander at Fort McKinley, Portland Harbor. He then went to the Marine Barracks Basic School at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia. He took part in the Occupation of Nagasaki, Japan, shortly after the A Bomb attack. He served in the 4th Marine Regiment in Shanghai, China in the defense of Shanghai during the Sino Japanese War in 1937.

He served 29 months in Alaska commanding two Barracks in Sitka and Kodiak Alaska. He graduated from the Basic Marine Officer Training and amphibious Warfare School. He also graduated from the Department of Defense Armed Forces Staff College in Northfork, Va. In Korea, he was Division Inspector and later was CO of the West Coast Island of Defense Forces, defending 6 islands of North Korea under the command of a Rear Admiral of The Royal Navy. He returned to the States and was in charge of Cold Weather Training in Srema, Nev. He did a tour as Inspector General for the Marine Corps for all organizations including Africa, Europe, American and Asia.

He was a special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy, given the responsibility of organizing and directing all activities for conservation and management of all renewable and natural resources on Navy and Marine Corps land and throughout the world.

He retired Nov. 1, 1959 and transferred to the Officer retired list. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Soule Shuman Post, Waldoboro and the Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post #149, Waldoboro. He was a director of the Maine Christmas tree Association immerctus, past president of the Maine Forest Products Council, the Knox, Lincoln Farm Bureau, Chairman, Forestry Committee, Time & Tide RC&D, and founding president of the Waldoboro Historical Association. He was chairman of the Board of the Waldoboro Sewer District. He was president of Lincoln County Fish and Game for eight years. He was a director of the Maine Farm Bureau for 12 years. He was president and chairman of the American Farm Bureau Federation and their Forestry Advisory Committee.

He received the Bronze Start with V for landing on Tinian Island in the Mariannas.

He was married to Caroline M. Jack in 1940. She died June 12, 1991, they were married 51 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Judith Carter of Waldoboro; four grandsons, Jason and Daniel Williams, Kenneth Carter and Chad Wales; four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Drew, Datrina and Mikala Williams.

Visiting hours were 6-7 p.m., Wed., Sept. 16 at the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, with a Marine Corp Service at 6:30 p.m. A Military service will be held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 17 at the Hall Funeral Home, Marine Corp. Chaplin Linda Laweryson, officiating. Interment will be at the Totman Cemetery, Waldoboro. Arrangements by Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, Waldoboro, Maine.

M. Phyliss Tracy
1999-04-29

M. Phyliss Tracy, 78, New Harbor, died April 21 at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.

She was born in Plymouth, Mass., a daughter of Frederich and Mildred Nordstrom Ginhold. She attended Bellingham, Mass., schools, graduating from Franklin (Mass.) High School in 1938.

In 1940 she married W. Warren Tracy, who died in April 1987.

For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy owned and operated Old Colony Lumber Company in Keene, N.H. Following retirement, they moved to New Harbor in 1982.

Mrs. Tracy was an avid reader, an accomplished seamstress and quilter, and a talented artist. She also had a great love and knowledge of flowers.

She was a member of the New Harbor Methodist Church, where she taught religious education. She was also a member of the American Quilters Society, Pine Tree Quilters Guild, Clamshell Quilters, Miles Memorial Hospital League, and the Pemaquid Art Gallery, and had recently been elected president of the Willing Workers Society of New Harbor.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James (Susan) MacKenzie of Swanton, Vt.; a grandson, Angus MacKenzie of Highgate, Vt.; a half-sister, Margery Bartlett of Bellingham; a special cousin, Donald Dassman of Plymouth; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Dylan MacKenzie of Highgate, Vt.

Visiting hours were held April 27 at Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. A funeral was held April 28 at the New Harbor Methodist Church; the Rev. Ernie Farrar officiated.

Sheena Joy Tripp
1999-02-25

SOUTH PARIS - Sheena Joy Tripp, 24, of South Paris died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at her home.

She was born in Norway, June 1, 1974 the loving daughter of Dane and Brenda Dunn Tripp, and loving sister of Shawn.

Sheena was a 1992 graduate of Edward Little High School and attended Mid State Business College, working toward a degree in medical transcription.

For several years she worked as a receptionist at Ripley and Fletcher Co. in South Paris. Going from there to work as a teller at Key Bank in Auburn. Wanting to work in her chosen field, Sheena went to Oxford Hills Internal Medicine. At the time of her death she was employed at the Poland Community Health Center at Poland Spring.

Because of her friendly and kind disposition she was loved by many and had many friends. She also enjoyed her close family life. Sheena loved eating out, shopping and snowmobiling with her many friends. Walking and exercise were a passion and she participated in many area walkathons, many times with her dad.

Survivors include her parents of Poland, a brother, Shawn, of Westbrook, maternal grandparents, Fletcher and Norma Dunn, of Poland and Zypherhills,FL; paternal grandmother, Rowena Tripp of Oxford; an aunt, Connie Dunn of Poland; two uncles, Phil Dunn, and his wife, Mona, of Poland and Bruce Dunn and his wife, Robin, of Corona, CA and five cousins.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Poland Community Church with spring Interment in Highland Cemetery, West Poland.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to New Beginnings, 436 Main Street Lewiston,ME.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls was in charge of arrangements.
