Bessie M. Trueworthy
1998-03-26

WEST PARIS - Bessie M. Trueworthy, 102, of Norway died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Ledgeview Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She was born in Nova Scotia, Canada on January 9, 1896, the daughter of Linus H. and Mary J. Haladay White. She was a graduate of Eaton Academy in Norridgewock.

She married Roy L. Trueworthy on January 10, 1914. Mr. Trueworthy died on August 14, 1981. Mrs. Trueworthy owned and operated the Candlewick Shop in Bridgton for 25 years before retiring. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bridgton Literary Club, A.A.R.P., Bridgton Congregational Church, and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth T. Lord and a son-in-law Dana M. Lord of Oxford; two grandsons, Linwood Curtis Lord of Norway and David Matthew Lord Sr. of Auburn; a cousin, Gordon Haladay of Skowhegan; a niece Marry and husband Charlie Gove Jr. of Winthrop; a nephew, Homer and wife Joanne Prue of Nashua, NH and three great-grand children, Justin Palmer of Bryant Pond, Shyenne Summers Lord of Lewiston, and David Matthew Lord Jr. of Poland.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Northside cemetery in Norridgewock with Rev. Harvey Lord officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mrs. Velma R. Truman
1999-07-15

WEST PARIS - Velma R. Truman, 92, of West Paris, formerly of Norway, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999. She was born in East Hebron on September 10, 1906, the daughter of Irving and Rena Mae Farris Monk.

She was educated in Hebron, Poland Spring, New Gloucester, and was a graduate of Cony High School in 1923.

Mrs. Truman had worked in Augusta, Richmond, York Village and at Beals Tavern as a laundress. Since 1950, she had worked in private homes in the Oxford Hills area including Norway Savings, Norway National Bank, and for over 25 years had worked for George and Marita Andrews as a cleaning lady.

She was a member of the Norway Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school for many years.

For the past several years she had been living with her daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Arnold Turner, in Oxford.

She married Scott Truman in 1941, he died in 1950.

She is survived by one daughter Rosemary Turner of West Paris; one son, Walter S. Truman, Jr. of Norway; six grandchildren, Jason, Joel, Tim, Tom, Heather, and Chantelle; three step-grandchildren, Pam, Tamara and Susan; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua Cyr, McKenzie and Hannah Turner, Dexter and Davis Turner, Zandi and Zianna Noble and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Sonny Truman and two brothers, Everard and Percy Monk.

Visiting hours were held on Friday, July 9 with a funeral service on Saturday, July 10 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Interment was in Riverside cemetery in West Minot. Bearers were Joel E. Truman, Jason Truman, Tim Turner and Tom Turner.

Donations in Mrs. Turner's memory may be sent to the Norway Baptist Church, Norway, ME 04268.

Elizabeth Anne Colby Tucker
1998-07-30

BUCKFIELD - Elizabeth Anne Colby Tucker, 71, died Friday, July 24, 1998.

Born on Paris Hill on October 7, 1927, the daughter of the late William Chase Colby and Esther Curtis Colby, she moved to Buckfield in 1941. She attended schools in Paris and Buckfield.

Mrs. Tucker married her best friend, Morris Tucker, on December 7, 1945 and recently enjoyed their 50th wedding anniversary at a party given by their four daughters and wonderful friends.

She was baptized with her husband and four daughters on July 14, 1963. At Buckfield Baptist Church she served many years as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and deacon. She also served as president of the Women's Missionary Guild, president of White Cross, and Literary chairperson.

She held each of the Star Point offices in O.E.S.; was lecturer of Mountain Grange (to which she belonged over 50 years); president, then co-secretary of Buckfield Literary Club; secretary of Buckfield Historical Society; treasurer of West Area American Baptist Women; and a 4-H leader for over 20 years. She belonged to the Oxford County Extension, as well as the East Hebron Extension, and served as secretary of Streaked Mountaineer Snowmobile Club.

A homemaker for her entire life, Mrs. Tucker cared for her loving husband and enjoyed her four daughters and their husbands, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed camping, traveling, knitting, handiwork, cooking, reading and stamp collecting.

Survivors include her husband, Morris; daughters and husbands, Carol and Don Perry of Hartford, Vickie and Neil Ross of Kennebunkport, Lorraine and Joel Oja of Sumner, and Sheri and Michael Blank of Sumner; eight grandchildren and spouses, Guy and Melissa Perry, Amy (Perry) and Gil Beaucage Jr., Tonja (Oja) and Eric Jacobs, Jacob Oja, Jill (Blank) and Derek Jacob, Benjamin Blank, Nathan Ross and Mark Ross; three great-grandchildren, Hillary, Hannah and Hailey Perry; a sister, Mrs. Willis (Eleanor) Austin; a brother, Earle William Colby; a sister-in-law, Ms. Norma Bessey Colby; many nieces, nephews, sisters- and brother-in-laws, and a much-loved 96-year-old mother-in-law Bertha Tucker; and a large family of cousins and four aunts. She was predeceased by a younger sister Carlene Colby.

A celebration of life service was held Tuesday at the Buckfield Community Church. Interment was in the Buckfield/Damon cemetery in Buckfield.

Friends who wish may make donations in Mrs. Tucker's memory to either the Buckfield Community Church, Buckfield Rescue, or O.E.S., all of Buckfield, ME 04220.

Ruth P. Twitchell
1998-10-08

NEWPORT, RI - Ruth P. Twitchell, 82, of Gothic Street, Paris and Portsmouth,R.I., died Thursday, September , 1998, at Newport Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in South Paris, January 13, 1916, the daughter of James and Alice Miller Perry.

She married Jerald R. Twitchell on June 22,1940 at the Perry home on Gothic Street. Both Mr.and Mrs. Twitchell retired from Hebron Academy in 1981 after 34 years of dedicated service .Mr. Twitchell, who died in 1993, was head of the science department and a physics teacher and Mrs. Twitchell worked in the alumni office. They had also lived in Homosassa Springs,FL, during the winter months. Mrs, Twitchell had been living with her daughter Susan Stroh in Portsmouth, RI, for the past two years due to failing health.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs, Twitchell is also survived by three granddaughters, Gretchen and Allison Stroh of Portsmouth, R.I. and Kimberly Umana of Brockton, MA and a great grandson, Paul James Therianos of Brockton,MA.

Family and friends may attend graveside services Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris. Friends are invited back to the family home on Gothic Street following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,45 Main Street, South Paris.

James W. Tyner
1999-02-04

ESSEX JUNCTION, VT - James W. Tyner, 65, of San Jose California died Saturday, January 30, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Essex Junction, VT.

He was born in Mechanic Falls on December 14, 1933, the son of John and A. Madeline Tyner.

Mr. Tyner served eight years in the U.S. Air Force and was employed as an In-Service Engineer for the U.S. Government until his retirement ion 1994.

He is survived by his son, James D. Tyner and wife Katherine of Essex, VT; their children, Leslie, Jessica and Derek; a son, Jon S. Tyner and wife, Joan, of Chazy, NY; their children, Krista Tyner, Ronda Mead, Judy Curtis, Becky St. Hilaire, Susan Bushey and Steven and David Poquette; stepchildren Susan Moodie of El Dorado Hills, CA; her children Kenneth, Katherine and Tiffany; Kevin Conard of Douglasville, PA;and his children Aaron and Lindsey; and Gregory Conard of San Jose, CA. In addition, he leaves a sister Beatrice Workman and her husband Willard of Livermore Falls and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Turnbow) Tyner in 1994.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2600 F, San Jose, CA 95159. Funeral services will be held at the Darling/Fischer Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos, CA on February 5, at 10 a.m.

Gwendolyn Townsend
1999-09-16

Gwendolyn Townsend, 72, of Boothbay died Sunday, September 12, at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

She was born July 2, 1927 in Boothbay, the daughter of Percy and Ora Stover Barter, Sr.

Mrs. Townsend worked at the Boothbay Post Office, retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service. She loved to travel all over the country, enjoyed going out to eat and playing cribbage.

She was predeceased by her brother, Percy Barter, Jr. in 1996.

Surviving are her husband of over 50 years, James Townsend of Boothbay; a daughter, Sharon, and her husband, Thomas Lewis, of Yarmouth; one grandson, David Lewis, of Orono; four sisters, Virginia Blake, Geraldine Townsend and Joan Rittall, all of Boothbay, and Dorothy Hardwick of Boothbay Harbor; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request there will be no services. Donations may be made in her memory to Miles Home Health/Hospice, Damariscotta, Maine 04543 or the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04538. Arrangements are by Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Mrs. Marion Allen Tucker
1999-10-28

AUGUSTA - Marion Allen Tucker, wife of Benjamin Tucker, Jr. of Readfield, passed away October 23, at the Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after a brief illness.

Mrs. Tucker was born Marion Ella Allen in North Waterford on March 17, 1932, the second child of George Allen and Marilla Hersey Allen.

She graduated from Norway High School in the class of 1950. After graduation, Mrs. Tucker studied nursing at the Rumford General Hospital in Rumford.

On September 7, 1951, she married Benjamin Tucker, Jr. of Norway. The Tuckers lived in Orono, Presque Isle, Boothbay Harbor, Norway, Pittston, Mount Vernon, and Readfield during their 48-year marriage. Mrs. Tucker was employed as a nurse's aide from 1971 to 1986 at the Augusta General Hospital in Augusta. She devoted her entire life to the care and nurturing of her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her many friends and relatives.

Mrs. Tucker is survived by her husband, Benjamin Tucker, Jr.; her five children Benjamin Tucker III and his wife Andrea of South Paris, Steven Tucker and his wife Angelika of Monmouth, Mark Tucker and his wife Alisa of Orono, Roxanne Tucker Wight and her husband Dan Wight of Readfield,. and Robert Tucker of Augusta; eight grandchildren, Benjamin Tucker IV, Katherine Tucker, Stephanie Knaus-Tucker, Justin Knaus-Tucker, Danielle Wight, Steven Wight, William Tucker, and Trevor Tucker. She wax predeceased by a daughter who died in 1975.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Marion Allen Tucker Memorial Scholarship for the Healing Arts c/o Guidance Office, Maranacook Community School, 1001 Main St., Readfield, ME 04355-0177. At her request there were no services.

Grace M. Thompson
2002-12-05

Grace M. Thompson, 97, widow of Dr. J. Douglas Thompson, died November 28 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Born July 6, 1905 in Clinton, she was the daughter of Manly and Manetta Morrison. She attended Waterville schools and was a graduate of Coburn Classical Institute and Colby College. She was employed by the Maine Central Railroad for 28 years at their general offices in Portland, retiring in 1972.

She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority at Colby and also a member of the Southwestern Colby Alumnae Association, a life member of the Martha Washington Chapter #25, Order of the Eastern Star, of Waterville, a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of South Portland and a former member of the Women's Fellowship and Matron of Meeting House Hill of that church.

Survivors include a son, Richard Morrison and a granddaughter, Alexa, both of Boothbay; a grandson, Erik, of Boothbay Harbor; and a niece, Marion Maroon of Waterville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland. Interment will be in spring at the Old Village cemetery in Clinton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Richard B. Tibbetts
2005-04-14

Richard Burton Tibbetts, 76, of West Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, April 10 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born August 8, 1928 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, he was a son of Raymond and Marion Tibbetts, He grew up in Boothbay and graduated from the Boothbay Region High School.

From 1947 to 1993 he worked as a Yacht Captain, and skippered the Balmy Days for several years. He worked in Maritime Industries and was the Harbor Pilot at Port Everglades, making 51 trips from Maine to Florida. For a couple of years he worked lobstering.

In addition to his love for the ocean, Mr. Tibbetts enjoyed the outdoors, taking trips in his R.V., building houses and was a skilled carpenter. He loved his home in West Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Marilyn L. Tibbetts of West Boothbay Harbor; his daughters, Linda Layton of Matthews, N.C, and Terri Marcello of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his sons, Mike and Mark Tibbetts of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his stepsons, Richard Tracy Batteese of Freeport, and Gregory Batteese of Brunswick; his stepdaughter, C. Lynn Vajda of Windham; and 15 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Sarah Foulger will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fishermen's Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 304, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Mrs. Eva B. Twitchell
1999-11-04

SOUTH PARIS - Eva B. Twitchell, 84, a lifelong resident of Bryant Pond, and widow of LaForest G. Twitchell, died Tuesday afternoon, October 26, 1999 at the Maine Veterans' Home.

Mrs. Twitchell was born in Bryant Pond, September 27, 1915, in the what is now known as the Maine House, the daughter of the late Herman E. and Bessie (Bryant) Billings.

She attended Woodstock schools, graduating from Woodstock High School in 1933. She then attended and graduated from Saint Baranbus Hospital School of Nursing, Portland, in 1937.

A registered nurse by profession, Mrs. Twitchell spent many years doing private duty nursing, but for the last 10 years of her career, prior to her retirement, she was associated with Stephens Memorial Hospital, in that capacity.

In 1940 she married the late LaForest G. Twitchell, who died on December 10, 1983.

Following World War II she and her family owned and operated a dairy farm in Woodstock, raising Jersey cattle, Border Collies, and Registered Boston Terriers. She spent most of her life on the family farm caring for family, running the farm and being a farmer's wife.

Prior to entering the Veterans' Home in January 1999, she was cared for, at home, by her daughter Christine.

Mrs. Twitchell was a 50-year member and Past Worthy Matron, of Jefferson Chapter, #89, O.E.S., of Bryant Pond, a charter member, and past president of the Woodstock Historical Society, St. Baranbus Alumni Association, and the Woodstock Extension Service.

Survivors include three children, Kathy Bennett, and her husband, Richard, of Albany, Allan and his wife, Guinevere, of Portland, and Christine Cole, and her husband Elton, of Bryant Pond; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock, on Friday. Services were held at the funeral home on Saturday with Interment in the Lakeside Cemetery, Bryant Pond.
