Mr. Walter Joseph Tencza
2000-01-06

OXFORD - Walter Joseph Tencza, 64, of Oxford (formerly of South Paris) died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, December 27, 1999.

He was born in New York City on March 16, 1935, the son of Michael and Mary Dratata Tencza.

A loving, caring, devoted family man, Walter was predeceased last year by his beloved wife of 42 years, Audrey.

He leaves a daughter, Mary, of Norway and a son, Joseph, of Oxford.

After 30 years of service, Walter retired from the Leviton Corp. of New York where he worked in the shipping/receiving department.

Mr. Tencza has spent the last 35 years humbly and tirelessly tending to his family's very special needs.

His wife and children have always been his greatest gift and joy.

Minnie had also been an especially good friend and comfort to him this past year.

Mr. Tencza loved animals. He also always enjoyed talking of the Old Brooklyn Neighborhood and the nostalgia; he loved the old movies, big bands, and butcher shops. He loved to cook and talk food and was quite accomplished at the art of cooking.

Walter and his family moved to Maine in 1987 and he loved the state and the people very much.

He always expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation for the kindness, helpfulness, and support shown by all the caring people of the Norway-South Paris Area and of the Progress Center of Norway, Western Maine Transportation and the Lewiston-Auburn Kidney Center. Walter Joseph Patrick Tencza was a saint among men.

At the request of the family there are no services scheduled at this time.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Progress Center of Norway or the Lewiston Auburn Kidney Center. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mrs. Dorothea W. Thayer
2000-02-10

NORWAY - Dorothea W. Thayer, 89, of South Paris died Sunday, February 6, 2000, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Saco on October 22, 1910, the daughter of Fred and Josephine Fairfield Whitman. She was a graduate of Thorton Academy.

She married Arthur Thayer on January 22, 1932 and he predeceased her in 1972.

Mrs. Thayer was a housewife most of her life and also provided healthcare for the elderly. She was also an avid reader. Mrs. Thayer had been a resident of the Market Square Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She is survived by her son, Ed Thayer of Oxford; a sister, Mary Fogg, of Saco; six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Harold; three brothers, Joseph, Theodore, and Jasper, and three sisters, Jesse Rhodes, Emily Taylor, and Stephanie.

There will be a memorial graveside service held in the spring at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris with Rev. Mike Ring officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mabel W. Thompson
2000-03-02

Mabel Wilson Thompson, 91, of Southport, died Thursday, February 24, at Hill House in Bath.

Born on March 16, 1908, in Groveton, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of Jessie and Marie Croteau Wilson.

She grew up in Orono and graduated from Orono High School. Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker and loved to read and do needlepoint. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard I. Thompson. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn T. Lemont of West Bath; a son, Richard W. Thompson of Southport; and six grandchildren, Paul Lemont Jr. of Brunswick, Rebecca Leeman of Bath, Richard M. and Jeffrey Lemont, both of West Bath, Linda Jane Thompson of Woolwich, and Hugh H. Thompson of Southport; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Decker Cemetery, Southport. Rev. Peter Panagore will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Southport Library, c/o Linda Brewer, Southport, ME 04576.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Helen B. Trefethen
1998-11-05

Helen B. Trefethen, of Friendship, died Oct. 1 at the age of 88, born Feb. 7, 1910 in Concord, Mass.

Helen was a graduate of Colby College in 1931. She married Joseph M. Trefethen in 1931, after marriage they both attended the University of Wisconsin. Helen earned her Masters degree in Geology. Joseph and Helen lived in Orono, and taught at the University of Maine from 1938, until retirement, at which time they moved to Friendship. Her husband, Joseph M. Trefethen, died in Friendship in 1990. Helen loved the earth and nature, she worked on the family farm as a child. Gardening remained an important part of her entire life.

She is survived by three children, Martha T. Clark of Austerlitz, NY; David J. Trefethen of Orono; John T. Trefethen of Ellsworth; two brothers, George Brigham of Canaan, Conn.; John Bringham of Quincy, Ill.; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was Oct. 24, at the Hall Funeral Home. The Rec. William Monroe officiated. Donations may be made to the Friendship Ambulance Service, Friendship, 04547 c/o of Richard Lash. Arrangement by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Carroll Theodore Tiffin
2000-03-02

Carroll Theodore Tiffin, 77, Waldoboro, died Feb. 28 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Carroll was born December 23, 1912 in Maud, Okla., the son of Arthur and Effie Tiffin. Carroll was one of eight children and was raised and lived most of his childhood in New Mexico.

Carroll was a veteran of World War II> During his lifetime, he worked in many fields. Some of the occupations, which he seemed quite proud of, were Santa Fe Railroad, shipyard welder, the Rockland Police Dept., and in later years at the old Waldoboro Button Factory as a machine repairman and electrician. After his retirement, he enjoyed keeping busy in his shop.

He is predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by: His wife of 34 years, Carlene Tolman Tiffin of Waldoboro, Son, Glen Tiffin of Amarillo, TX, Daughters, Nita Erwin of Dallas, TX, Stepdaughters, Karen Withee of Rockland, Delores Ogden and her husband James of Waldoboro, Stepson, Ronnie Emerton of Rockland, Brothers, Curtis and Leon Tiffin of Portales, NM, Gerald Tiffin of Oklahoma City, OK, Sisters, Thelma Start and Jewell Hall of Portales, NM, LaVerna Brewer of St. Vrains, NM, Ramona Tiffin of Tucumcary, NM, Granddaughters, Kristy, Candace and Calah Whitney of Waldoboro, Samantha Withee of Rockland, Grandsons, Randy Wall, Jr. of Rockland, Cory Whitney of Vermont, Ryan Withee of Rockland, James Ogden, Jr. of Waldoboro, One great granddaughter, Rebecca Dole of Rockland.

Visiting hours 10 to 11 a.m., March 4, at Hall Funeral Home - 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A funeral service at 11 a.m., March 4, at Hall Funeral Home. Pastor Bartram Dilks will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.

Barry Alexander Tedford
2000-04-06

Barry Alexander Tedford, 47, died at home in Yardville, NJ March 29 after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Elizabeth and son Brandon, a brother Hollis III of Waldoboro, brother Steward of Fort Mill, SC, and mother Marie of New Harbor and Lake Placid, Fla.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Raymond Thomas
2000-04-06

Raymond Thomas, 89, died Monday, April 3rd at his home in Edgecomb. born May 11, 1910 in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of Charles and Sabina Townsend Thomas.

Mr. Thomas graduated in 1926 from what is now known as the Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center in Boston Harbor and from Douglas Massachusetts High School in 1928.

In 1930 he returned to the Island School as a farm assistant. At his retirement in 1975 he was serving on the board of trustees. His positions at the Island included Assistant Bandleader, Sloyd In-structor, Boat Captain and Dean of Boys. His real passion was athletics. He had played semi-pro baseball in the Blackstone Valley League when he was in Douglas Massachusetts. At Thomp-son, he coached the three major sports. He was Athletic Director and instituted a valuable intramural program. His dedication and fairness were well remembered by the alumni who still addressed him as "Coach" in their letters, phone calls and visits, which brought him so much pleasure during his retirement and illness.

He was a member of the New England and National Wood- carvers Association and also enjoyed gardening, landscaping, golf and tennis. He was a certified Red Cross water safety and first aid instructor during WWII.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Wilhelmina Thomas of Edgecomb; one son, James and his wife Sherrie Thomas of Orrington; and sister-in-law, Meredith Raymond of Amherst, Mass.

A private graveside service will be held at the Highland cemetery in Edgecomb.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Willauer Schools, c/o Tiobec, Thompson Island, Boston, MA 02127 or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27 in Boothbay.

John Trent
2000-04-27

John Trent John Trent of Ardmore, Pennsylvania and Murray Hill Road, East Boothbay, died April 22. He was 88.

He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania March 7, 1912, the son of Chester and Florence Murray. His only sibling, Robert Murray, was born eight years later.

A graduate of Mount Penn High School, he attended Purdue University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Franklin & Marshall College in 1933. He worked at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and at KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh before joining CBS Radio in New York as a radio commentator. In 1948 he was assigned to their Philadelphia station, WCAU, as an on-air personality with multiple daily radio shows. A master marketer, he developed John Trent Days at Food Fair, and the Dinner Bell, a recipe phone service promoting the station's advertisers and independent grocers.

Active in the Pennsylvania Miss America Pageant, he coached Evelyn Aye, Miss Pennsylvania, in her talent presentation on her way to winning the title of Miss America in 1954.

In 1962 he formed John Trent & Associates, a real estate appraisal company.

He was semi-retired at the time of his death. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute, was a Pennsylvania Real Estate Broker, and a member of the National Association of Realtors. Mr. Trent was an expert witness in real estate appraisal.

Surviving are his wife, Alice (nee Pappas); a son, Peter, of Ardmore; a daughter, Melissa Gilfillan of Moorestown, NJ; a brother, Robert; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John, Jr. of Ardmore.

A memorial service was scheduled today, April 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of West Laurel Hill. Interment was private. Friends who wish may make contributions in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 1624 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Louise M. Townsend
2000-06-01

Louise Wickham Mackenzie Townsend, 104, died May 24 at the Gregory Wing in St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Flushing, N.Y., Mrs. Townsend spent much of her life on Long Island, and resided in Easthampton before moving to Maine 18 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Donald Mackenzie and Edward Townsend, both of New York.

Survivors include her daughter, Louise M. Royall of East Boothbay; two grandsons, William Mackenzie Royall of Scarborough and Robert MacMillan Royall of East Boothbay; two granddaughters, Jessica Louise Royall and Victoria Lynn Royall, both of Scarborough; and dear friend and companion, Priscilla Deetjen.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 5 at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Peter Panagore presiding. Burial is to be held privately in Oceanview Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Marilyn W. Teel
2000-07-13

Marilyn Walsh Teel, longtime resident of Newburyport, Mass. and founder of Marilyn's Mustard Sauce, Inc., died Friday, July 7, of pancreatic cancer, at her son's home in Damariscotta.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., to Charles Sarto Walsh and Gladys O'Brien Walsh, she attended Winchester High School, Vesper George School of Art, and was president of her class at Mount Ida College. She became a stewardess for American Airlines before marrying Allan Howard Teel and settling in Reading, Mass. to raise six children.

Mrs. Teel was an active member of the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, and an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. She was a member of the New England Food Professionals Association. Her much sought after mustard sauce was a fixture in area restaurants and gourmet shops. The distinctive sauce first appeared in her own restaurant, Marilyn's, in Manchester, Mass. where she embarked on her second career.

Survivors include her brother, Charles Sarto Walsh; children, Dr. Allan Sturges and Carol Scales Teel, Steven Teel, Jeff Teel, Mary Lou Teel and Peter Freundlich, Nancy Teal, and Chris and Kellie Teel; 13 grandchildren; and many wonderful friends and family members.

The family will be receiving friends and relatives at the Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Funeral Home in 35 Green Street in Newburyport, Mass., on Friday, July 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church on 7 Court Street in Newburyport, Saturday, July 15 at 10 a.m., followed by refreshments at the Bluwater CafÈ and a gathering at the home of friend Mary Kuist of Amesbury, Mass.

Donations in her name may be sent to the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library, 94 State Street, Newburyport, MA 01950, or the Immaculate Conception Restoration Fund, 7 Court Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
