Mildred E. Thiboutot
2001-05-10

Mildred E. Thiboutot, 86, of Boothbay Harbor died Thursday, May 3 at Sanford Health Care in Sanford.

Born March 28, 1915 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Capt. William P. Barter and Sara Etta Winslow Barter. She attended local schools.

Mrs. Thiboutot worked for over 30 years for Miss Sidney Baldwin and her friends, Frances Seagraves and Ellen James, cleaning and taking care of them.

Mrs. Thiboutot was very independent. She took care of herself, her children and grandchildren and never wanted help from anyone. She built an addition to her home and used to carry wood and shovel the snow off her roof in the winter.

She walked to work and to area stores daily until she was age 65, when she took a driving course and got her driver's license.

She loved to shop at lawn sales and ride around Ocean Point and elsewhere.

In 1991, diabetes caused her to lose a leg, then three months later, she lost her other leg. Even being a double amputee, she still lived alone and took care of herself. Her niece, Jeanette Main, and Jeanette's husband, Frank, brought her meals and checked in on her daily.

Mrs. Thiboutot continued to live alone until 1999 when she moved to Sanford to live with her granddaughter, Denise Brook, who took care of her until she moved to the Sanford Health Care Center. At the center, everyone enjoyed her company and called her "Nana."

Mildred was one of 18 children.

She was predeceased by 15 brothers and a sister, a son, William Thiboutot, a daughter, Mitzi Peters, and two grandsons, Ryan Thiboutot and Patrick Merrill.

She is survived by two sisters, Inez Sawyer of Boothbay Harbor and Grace Keene of Portland; a son, Sonny Thiboutot of Falmouth; two daughters, Maxine Harvey of Sanford and Joanna Merrill of Wiscasset; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at Oak Lawn cemetery on Saturday May 12 at 2 p.m.

Gilbert G. Thomas
2001-02-08

Gilbert “Gilly” George Thomas, 46, of Woolwich died Feb. 4, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a long illnes.

He was born in Kingston, Mass. on Dec. 13, 1954 the son of William and Georgiana J. (Isabel) Thomas.

In 1973 he graduated from Silver Lake High School in Massachusetts. Mr. Thomas lived and loved fire fighting, he was a member of the fire department at all locations that he lived. In 1981 he and his family moved to Florida. In 1983 they resided in Randolph, and in 1985 they lived in the Midcoast area. In 1987 they moved to McKenzie Lane in Woolwich. He was employed at Doten’s Constructions in Freeport for several years. most recently he was employed at Hallmark Homes in Topsham.

Gilly was a dedicated volunteer firefighter for 24 years serving 9 years for the Arrowsic Fire Department as assistant chief and training officer. he most recently served for the Dresden Fire Department and enjoyed assisting all local departments and was well loved by all.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine F. Thomas of Evans City, Penn., one daughter, Heidi L. Thomas of Woolwich, one son, Scott W. Thomas of Woolwich, one grandson, Nicholas H. Bouchard of Woolwich and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours Feb. 6, 6 to 8 p.m. with fireman honors at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. Memorial Service 2 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Keene officiating.

Edward B. Tukey
2001-05-31

Edward B. Tukey, 88, Augusta, died May 22, at the Togus Veterans Administration Hospital. For many years he marched in the Memorial Day parade in his hometown of Damariscotta.

He was born in Newcastle, a son of Robert K. and Florence Burns Tukey.

Mr. Tukey served in the Army Infantry during World War II, participating in the Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, American Theater Campaign ribbon, and the Victory Medal. During the heaviest fighting in the battle for the Huertgen Forest, he was buried alive for a short period by the blast of an 88 mm shell.

Mr. Tukey owned and operated a landmark beautician business in Damariscotta for more than 40 years. He retired to his home in South Bristol, where he enjoyed boats, lobstering, and spending time on the water.

For the past 4 1/2 years, Mr. Tukey was cared for at the Nursing Home Care Unit at Togus.

His first wife, Elaine Ruth Sturtevant Tukey, died in 1994. His wife, Isabelle House Tukey, died in 1999.

Surviving are a son, James H. of Pownal; a daughter, Jody Daly of Mill Valley, Calif.; a brother, Hale P. of Damariscotta; a stepson, Lawrence P. Minott of Windham; a stepdaughter, Linda Minott Smullen of Virginia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service at 1 p.m. May 30 at Damariscotta Baptist Church, Bristol Road, Damariscotta. Arrangements are by Pine State Cremation Services Inc., Richmond.

Hilda L. Tetreault
2001-09-13

Hilda L. Tetreault, 97, of Washington, D.C. and a summer resident of Squirrel Island since 1930, died of pulmonary failure Monday, August 29 after a short illness.

Born in Bronxville, N.Y. in 1904, she attended Syracuse University and Barnard College and graduated from Fordham Law School in 1927.

After her marriage, she and Mr. Tetreault moved to New York City where he practiced law and she worked as a legal secretary until she began to raise a family.

From 1947 until her retirement in 1972 she worked in various jobs for the Board of Higher Education of New York City, the last one as the assistant to the Chairman. After retiring, she moved to the Washington area to be closer to her daughter Jodie.

Survivors include two daughters, Jodie Allen of Washington, D.C., and Betty Knake of Weston, Mass.; two grandsons, Ted Allen of Columbus, Ohio and Rob Knake of Weston, Mass.; and one granddaughter, Catie Knake of Weston, Mass.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22 at 2 p.m. at St. Albans Church, Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Davenport Library, Squirrel Island, ME 04570.

Carolyn P. Tilton
2001-12-06

Carolyn Priscilla (Greenleaf) Tilton, 75, of Hampden, wife of the late Bernard L. Tilton, died Tuesday, November 27 at a Bangor hospital.

Born in Boothbay Harbor April 6, 1926, she was the daughter of Russell and Susie Mae (Poole) Greenleaf.

She attended Boothbay schools and had been a lifeguard instructor. She had been employed as a dental assistant in the office of the late Dr. John Mabee of Bangor. In more recent years, she was employed by McPherson Timberlands, retiring in 1991. Mrs. Tilton had been a volunteer at the Edythe Dyer Community Library, Hampden and St. Joseph's Hospital, Bangor. She was an avid reader, enjoying reading and writing poetry and political debate. She loved meeting people.

Survivors include one daughter, Signe T. McPherson and her husband, Hank of Hampden; three grandchildren, Mark. H. McPherson of Hampden, Daniel S. Tilton and his wife, Heather of Corinna, Stephanie L. Dankert and her husband, Ryan of Dover-Foxcroft; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Andrew and Samuel; a daughter-in-law, Brenda M. Tilton of Dover-Foxcroft; two sisters, Suzanne Reed of Boothbay Harbor, Joyce Armstrong of Manchester; one brother, Arthur Greenleaf Jr. of New York; several nieces, nephews; and many special friends and neighbors.

She was predeceased by a her husband in 1980; a son, Scott A. Tilton in 1996; a grandson, Matthew S. McPherson in 1990; and one brother, Dwight Greenleaf.

Funeral services were held November 30 at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home in Bangor. Interment was in Pine Grove cemetery in Bangor.

Margaret Toth
2001-12-27

On November 29, 2001, Margaret Toth, 88, passed away in Mesa, Arizona. Margaret had spent over 50 summers in the Boothbay Region where she was a hostess for the Spruce Point Inn and Newagen Inn.

She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Wilson of Lakeland, Florida.

James B. Tharpe
2002-06-20

James B. "Big Jim" Tharpe, 79, died Saturday, June 8 in Marathon, Florida.

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, he was the son of Alexander and Sybil Salter Tharpe. In 1939 he graduated from Leon High School with straight A's. From 1939 to 1943 he attended Georgia School of Technology, graduating with honors with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering conferred. While at Georgia Tech, he was active in the Navy ROTC.

Mr. Tharpe served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as a radar officer in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. While in the Navy he was awarded the American Defense Ribbon and the Asiatic Ribbon. In 1946 he was placed on inactive status. Following his service he attended MIT where he received his masters of science degree.

Mr. Tharpe spent his professional life as a pioneer in the development of television and in the broadcasting industry. He was active in the early days of television, and was instrumental in setting up television broadcast stations nationally and internationally. He and his colleagues took an active part in development and evaluation of early color television systems.

In 1955, Mr. Tharpe organized, and was president of, the Visual Electronics Corporation of New York, N.Y. Visual Electronics Corporation first distributed and then designed and manufactured television and radio broadcasting equipment. He was active in the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) -- attending every annual NAB Exhibition for 40 consecutive years. He was also active in the National Association of Educational Broadcasters and other industry-related organizations.

Mr. Tharpe made his home in Montclair, N.J. for many years, and summered in East Boothbay at the family home of his wife, Page Inness-Brown Tharpe. He also maintained a residence in New York, N.Y. where his business was primarily located. Upon his retirement he relocated to the Florida Keys where he managed the Yardarm Motel in Marathon, Fla.

He loved children, was always involved with his family and was very well known for his love of life and playful sense of humor.

Survivors include his children, Suzanne P. Tharpe of Palo Alto, Calif. and East Boothbay, James B. Tharpe Jr. of Marietta, Ga., Sybil Tharpe Davis of Spring Island, S.C., Sally Tharpe Grant of East Boothbay, Page Tharpe Krause of Madison, Wis., Nell Tharpe Royall of East Boothbay, and Anne Tharpe Spriggs of Boulder Creek, Colo.; one sister, Nell Tharpe Wash of Farifield, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; aunts; cousins; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Alexander L. Tharpe Jr.

A celebration of Mr. Tharpe's life will be held Friday, July 5 at 1 p.m., to be held at Green Landing Lodge, Green Landing Road in East Boothbay.

Robert B. Thompson
2002-06-20

Robert Barker Thompson, born August 26, 1920 in Presque Isle, son of Mabel Barker and Wilfred Steadman Thompson, died Wednesday, June 12.

Mr. Thompson grew up in Presque Isle and graduated from the local high school in 1927. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology receiving a bachelor's and master's degrees in sanitary engineering. He also studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard.

In 1936 he joined the Dorr Company (later Dorr Oliver) and spent 33 years as an employee rising to Manager of FluoSolids sales and later president of the Dorrco Division, their engineering and construction arm specializing in the design and construction of phosphate and fertilizer plants.

In 1937, he married Lovola Tanquay, who predeceased him.

For 34 years the family lived in Wilton, Connecticut where Mr. Thompson served the municipality both as a police commissioner and as water commissioner. He retired to Maine as a summer resident of Boothbay in 1970 and in 1975 became a permanent resident of Boothbay Harbor. He was active in the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund serving as treasurer and director for several years. He was a long-time driver for the local Meals-On-Wheels program.

Mr. Thompson was a life-member and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Survivors include two daughter, Nancy Willis of St. Augustine, Florida and Jane Hesford of Clinton, Connecticut; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by A. Dignified Alternative - Hatcher Cremations of Jacksonville, Florida.

Walter Thorndike
2002-03-07

Walter Thorndike, 44, died Monday February 25, at his home in Bethlehem, Georgia.

He was born in Boothbay Harbor November 15, 1957.

He attended Wiscasset schools and lived in the Wiscasset area for most of his life. He moved to Georgia six years ago.

Mr. Thorndike enjoyed riding motorcycles and working on cars and spending time with his dog, Harley. He was a member of the United Bikers of Maine.

Survivors include his daughter, Dawn Thorndike of Wiscasset; one sister, Ruth Ann Downing of Bath; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Dawn Thorndike, 288 Birch Point Road, Wiscasset, Maine 04578.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.
