Eleanor M. Tibbetts
2002-10-17

Eleanor Marie Tibbetts, 77, died on October 12, 2002 in Brunswick.

She was born on August 10, 1925 on Bremen, Long Island. She was the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle Simmons Thibodeau.

She grew up in Friendship and attended local schools. She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1941.

Mrs. Tibbetts worked as a waitress for many years, where she enjoyed meeting people. She also worked as a housekeeper for many families. She worked as an Avon representative for over 25 years. For 20 of those 25 years, she was a recipient of the Presidents Club Honor, which was awarded to only a very small minority of representatives for achieving high sales. She also received many Avon District President Awards as well.

In 1965 she married Walter Tibbetts, Jr. They made their home on Southport Island, where she was an active member in the local school and the Southport United Methodist Church activities.

She was a very selfless woman who put others first. She was considered a second mother to many, including her brothers and sisters. If she heard that someone was ill or in the hospital she would be among the first to bake a cake or offer a gift of some recognition. Even if she herself was down she earnestly tried to inspire with warmth and positive approval for all. She always thought of others before herself, she was energetic, meticulous and unselfish.

She enjoyed playing bingo, listening to country music, especially the Statler Brothers, baking, watching soap operas, helping others, and spending time with family, especially the children.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter in 1976.

She is survived by her sons, Arnold G. Thibodeau of Edgecomb and Randy M. Tibbetts of Boston, Mass.; her sister, Virginia Thompson of Friendship; her brothers, Dana F. Davis of Boothbay Harbor, Joseph "Jody" Thibodeau of Boothbay Harbor and Thomas Thibodeau of Friendship; her brothers-in-law, Edward Tibbetts of Southport and Gordon Tibbetts of Southport; her sister-in-law, Bea Hawke of Boothbay Harbor; her grandchildren Arend Trent Thibodeau of Hartland and Melanie D. Parks of Newcastle, Vir.; her great-grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Thibodeau of Hartland, Dylan Parks of Newcastle, Vir. and Desiree Ann Parks of Newcastle, Vir.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday, October 16th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at the Southport United Methodist Church. Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Decker cemetery in Southport.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camp Sunshine, 35 Arcadia Road, Casco 04015. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Fern T. Tibbetts
2002-01-24

Fern Theodora Tibbetts, 68, of Southport, died Friday, January 18.

Born October 2, 1933 in Swanville, she was the daughter of Linwood Rushbrook and Hazel Faulkner Thayer. She lived in Bath and Edgecomb and then moved to Southport in the 1940s.

She cleaned cottages for summer residents in the spring and liked to bake and cook. She lobstered with her husband, Albion Tibbetts, and was always busy taking all the children to different events. She was an early member of the Southport Mother's Club and the Southport Grange.

Mrs. Tibbetts enjoyed crafts, bingo, car rides, dining out and especially spending time with her family and friends.

In the spring of 2001, Mrs. Tibbetts received an honorary diploma from Boothbay Region High School.

Her husband, Albion Tibbetts, predeceased her in December 2000.

Survivors include one son, Craig Tibbetts and his wife Lynn of Augusta; one daughter, Martha Dickson and her husband David of Bath; two grandchildren, Jacob Tibbetts and Joshua Tibbetts of Tacoma, Washington; one sister, Norma Drinnon of Lancaster, Virginia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours were held Monday, January 21 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 22 at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Dorr officiating. Burial will be in Spruce Lawn Cemetery, Southport.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Cornelia J. Tobias
2002-04-18

Cornelia Jennings Tobias, 93, died April 13 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing, Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 9, 1908 in Zanesville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Irwin G. and Charlotte Jennings Lynn.

She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. and, following high school, she attended Marietta College, Ohio and earned her bachelor's degree from New York University.

On September 11, 1931, she married Clarence Ellsworth Tobias in Brooklyn, N.Y. The couple raised their family and resided in Garden City, N.Y. for over 50 years. Mr. Tobias was a long-term trustee and mayor of Garden City, N.Y. from 1961-1963. He died in 1975.

Mrs. Tobias was a devoted wife and mother of six children. She was active in many community organizations, including the Garden City Community Church, A.A.U.W. and Panhellenic. She enjoyed bridge, golf, dancing and reading.

In 1993 she moved to Maine permanently to be near her daughter, Linda Tobias Reeves of West Boothbay Harbor and Delray Beach, Fla.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Tobias Reeves of West Boothbay Harbor and Delray Beach, Fla.; sons, William M. Tobias of Newton Square, Penn., Robert E. Tobias of Park Ridge, N.J., Geoffrey E. Tobias of Delray Beach, Fla., Stephen J. Tobias of Garden City, N.Y., and Gregory A. Tobias of Garden City, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and a brother, Charles Jennings of Morganton, N.C.

A memorial service will be held Friday April 19 at 8 p.m. at Garden City Community Church, Garden City, N.Y. Burial will be in Amityville Cemetery, Amityville, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay, Maine.

Sandra Jean Thomas, 57
2003-05-02

Sandra Jean Thomas, 57, died on April 23, 2003. She passed away peacefully at home with the husband of 32 years, Robert Thomas, Sr. at her side holding her hand.

She was born May 20, 1945, in Brunswick, a daughter of Mr. Robert and Mary MacKenzie McEachern, Sr.

Mrs. Thomas was an employee at J.J. Nissen in Portland as the order clerk. She transferred with the company to Biddeford when it was purchased by Interstate Brands Co.

She enjoyed going to work each day. Mrs. Thomas was also a member of the Royal River Rod and Gun Club. She'll be dearly missed by all her family and friends.

She is survived by her six children; two daughters, Maria and her husband, Dan and Brandy; four sons, John and his wife, Phuong, Joe and his wife, LouEllen, Robert and his wife, Noel, Adam and his wife, Heidi.

Mrs. Thomas was a loving grandmother to her 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, LLC, of Gray.

Mabel A. Tamanini
2003-10-16

Mabel A. Tamanini, 75, of Wyomissing, Pa., died Friday, October 3 in Reading (Pa.) Hospital where she had been a patient for one day.

She was the wife of Robert J. Tamanini

Born in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of the late Melville and Carrie (Huey) Sproul.

Mrs. Tamanini was employed as a podiatry assistant by Dr. Emil Bartos and Dr. David Bartos in Reading, Pa. She retired in 1984.

She was a member of the St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Whitfield, Pa.

Mrs. Tamanini is also survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Tamanini) Baisch of Reading, Pa., and a sister, Thelma (Sproul) Sherman of Boothbay Harbor.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 8 at the St. Ignatius Loyola Church. A private burial was held at Gethsemane cemetery in Laureldale, Pa.

The Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading, Pa., was in charge of arrangements.

Maurice W. Taylor
2003-04-03

Maurice W. Taylor, 93, of West Southport died Friday, March 28 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.

He was born April 8, 1909 in Orange, Mass., a son of William and Evangeline Taylor. He graduated from Orange High School.

In 1935 he married Alvina Webber. He was a self-employed carpenter throughout his career and he also worked as a ships carpenter on mine sweepers at Sample's Shipyard prior to World War II. He also served with the Navy's 69th Construction Battalion during World War II.

He was a longtime member of the Southport Methodist Church, the Southport Fire Department and the Seaside Lodge of the Masons. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting with his son in-law and camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alvina Taylor, a resident of the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor; a daughter Kathryn Lufkin of Brooklin; two sisters, Elsie Blanchard of West Springfield, Mass. and Eleanor Smith of North Hollywood, Calif.; three brothers, Everett Taylor of Athol, Mass., Lloyd Taylor of Orange, Mass. and Vernon Taylor of Marietta, Ga. three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service in celebration of his life was held Monday, March 31 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. A burial followed in Union Cemetery. The Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southport Fire Department, 757 Cape Newagen Road, West Southport, ME 04576.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Effie M. Temple
2003-03-27

Effie M. Temple, 81, of Thornton Oaks in Brunswick died Wednesday, March 19 at Mid Coast Senior Health Care Center in Brunswick.

Born in Bath February 23, 1922, she was the daughter of John F. and Flora E. (Curtis) Pinkham.

She attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in 1940. She married James W. Temple on October 11, 1940.

Mrs. Temple worked as a salesperson and assisted her husband with the management of Bath Lumber Company from 1958 to December of 1983. They moved to Wiscasset in 1982. She moved to Thornton Oaks in 2001.

She was a member of the Bath Society, Church of the New Jerusalem in Bath.

She was predeceased by her husband who died in 1996.

Survivors include her son, James L. Temple and his wife, Michelle, of Topsham; one sister, Merline Besaw of Bath; two grandchildren, Sarah and Lukas Temple; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Saturday, March 22 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove cemetery in the spring.

Charles A. Thompson
2003-06-05

Dr. Charles Arthur Thompson, 86, of Squirrel Island, well-known Newton Highlands, Mass. general practitioner and the husband of 57 years of Jean Perry Thompson, died Wednesday, April 30 at his home in North Hill, Needham, Mass.

Son of the late Dr. Charles A. and Francena Noyes Thompson, Dr. Thompson was born in the same house where he lived nearly his entire life. It was also from this home that he practiced family medicine and where, with Mrs. Thompson, he raised his five children.

Dr. Thompson was captain and All Scholastic center of the Newton High School football team in 1933 when he was only 16 years old. In 1939 he graduated from Dartmouth College and from Tufts Medical School in 1943. After completing his medical training at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, he was appointed to the anesthesia staff at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

In April of 1944 he joined the Navy and was involved in the invasion of France and the invasion of Italy.

After discharge from the Navy, Dr. Thompson completed his residency at the Chelsea Naval Hospital where, as he often fondly recalled, he did his hospital rounds with a fellow resident on a tandem bicycle. Following residency, Dr. Thompson returned to the Newton-Wellesley Hospital to open his office of general practice. It was in the medical records department of the hospital where he met his wife, where she was employed as a secretary.

He served terms as president of the medical staff at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital and was chairman of the Newton Board of Health. In 1974, he extended his caregiving as interim Medical Director of the Mt. Silinda Mission Hospital in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Africa.

In 1959, Dr. Thompson bought a summer cottage on Squirrel Island, Boothbay Harbor. He and his family have enjoyed summers at Squirrel ever since. He was on the Squirrel Island Board of Overseers and the Sewer Commission.

In 1990 he retired from medical practice and he and his wife moved to North Hill in Needham, Mass. in 1997, where he served on the Hill Top Board and the Needham Town Council.

Dr. Thompson was predeceased by a son, Charles Arthur Thompson Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; children, Meredith Kerr of North Yarmouth, Wayne Perry Thompson of Sebastopol, Calif., Dana Humphreys of Suffield, Conn. and R. David Thompson of New Haven, Conn.; seven grandchildren, James T. Kerr, Sarah E. Kerr, Timothy C. Kerr, Charles A. Thompson IV, Helen D. Humphreys, Michacia V. Thompson and Nora R. Thompson.

A memorial service celebrating his life was held at the Newton Highlands Congregational Church on Saturday, May 3, where he was a life-long member.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newton Highlands Congregational Church, the Squirrel Island Grandfathers Club (c/o Squirrel Island, ME 04570) or a charity of choice.
