Waldo E. Tibbetts
2004-06-24

Waldo E. Tibbetts, 84, of Unionville, Conn., husband of Joan (Miller) Tibbetts, died Saturday, June 19 at McLean Home in Connecticut.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, October 27,1919, son of the late James and Jenny (Enos) Tibbetts, he resided in Unionville for 60 years. Prior to retiring, he was employed as a plumber at the Veteran Hospital in Newington for many years.

Mr. Tibbetts was a United States Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #36 in Boothbay; a member of the Farmington Valley (Conn.) Men's Club; a longtime member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Avon, Conn., and was also a member of the Breakfast Club at the church.

He was an avid golfer and had the distinction of having shot two holes in one.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his two stepchildren, Holly Aline Farrar of Florence, Mass., and Duane S. Farrar and his wife Elizabeth of Malden, Mass; two brothers, John Tibbetts of Burlington, Conn., and Joseph Westcott of New Holland, Penn; and one sister, Constance Pitcher of Rockland.

Mr. Tibbetts was predeceased by his brother Gilbert Tibbetts.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 26 at 2 p.m. in the Memorial United Methodist church, 867 West Avon Road in Avon, Conn., with Pastor James R. Hoffman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 867 West Avon Road, Avon, CT 06001.

Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Home, Inc. of Unionville, Conn.

Dr. Pauline Tompkins
2004-12-02

Dr. Pauline "Polly" Tompkins passed away on Friday, November 19, an influential leader in American and international higher education and a pioneer in higher education for women. She was a distinguished scholar, college president, dean of students, historian, writer, professor, political scientist, board member, and matriarch of the Tompkins family.

A native of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Dr. Tompkins graduated from Pine Manor Junior College in 1938 and Mount Holyoke College in 1941, Phi Beta Kappa. She received an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) in 1942 and 1948, respectively.

She also received 11 honorary degrees durng her career, and an award was established in her name at Pine Manor College in 1970.

Her doctoral dissertation, "American-Russian Relations in the Far East," was published by MacMillan (New York) in 1949.

Dr. Tompkins was the first woman president of Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Penn., serving for 11 years. Starting in 1959, Dr. Tompkins was named General Director of the American Association of University Women and the AAUW Educational Foundation for eight years.

In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Dr. Tompkins to the United States Advisory Commission on International Education and Cultural Affairs. She also served as a member of the Committee for Education, part of President John F. Kennedy's Commission on the Status of Women.

The highlights of her career included extensive travel throughout the world. While in South Africa, she got to know many individuals deeply immersed in the anti-apartheid struggle, including Helen Joseph, viewed by many blacks as "a mother of the struggle" and Winnie Mandela.

Her wish was to live independently on her farm called Singing Meadows in Edgecomb, which she did up until her 86th year. She made sure the family met at the farm for an annual reunion, which has fostered many years of heartfelt memories. She donated part of the farm to the Boothbay Region Land Trust to be preserved in perpetuity for public enjoyment.

Survivors include her nephews Gerry E. Tompkins, his wife, Joir, and their children, Tatiana and Alex; James D. Tompkins, his wife, Ester, and their children, Bianca and Douglas; and several great-nieces and their children.

Gifts in Dr. Tompkins' memory may be made to Pine Manor College, Mount Holyoke College or Cedar Crest College.

Dorothy P. Townsend
2004-04-08

Dorothy P. Townsend, 75, died Friday, April 2 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born November 9, 1928 in Damariscotta, she was a daughter of Carroll and Gladys Trask Sproul. She grew up in the Cedar Grove section of Dresden and graduated from Bridge Academy in Dresden.

Mrs. Townsend worked as a nurse's aide for St. Andrews Hospital, at the Spruce Point Inn as a waitress, and at Patten's Shoe Store in Boothbay Harbor.

She was well known as the "Pie Lady and Cookie Lady." She made 40 pies a day for many restaurants in the Boothbay Region starting with Robin's Luncheonette and ending at the Lobster Dock. She was a member of Crescent Chapter O.E.S. and the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Townsend enjoyed spending time with her family, making quilts and especially loved to cook. She also loved country music. She was predeceased by her parents, Carroll Sproul and Gladys Sproul Meserve; husband, Francis W. Townsend; and by a brother, Joe Sproul.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn Townsend of Boothbay Harbor and Dale Townsend of Nobleboro; two daughters, Jill Marsh of Boothbay Harbor, and Joan Dinjian of Tyngsboro, Mass.; brothers: C. Jimmy Sproul of Boothbay, and Samuel Sproul of Wiscasset; sisters, Katherine Connors of Wiscasset, Calista Boyd of Boothbay Harbor; cousin, Eleanor Lewis of Wiscasset; grandchildren, Kerri Kelley of Boothbay, Ben Townsend of East Boothbay, Rebecca Townsend of San Francisco, Calif., Jennifer Bell of St. Petersburg, Fla., Rendle Jones of East Boothbay, Jennipher Jones of Scarborough, Derek Marsh of Naples, Fla., Rachel Getchell of Edgecomb, and Sarah and Karen Dinjian, both of Tyngsboro, Mass.; nephew, Bobby Boyd of Boothbay, niece, Ann Boyd of Augusta; and many great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 8, 11 a.m. at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Townsend's memory to the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 641, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Norma L. Townsend
2004-07-01

Norma Lewis Townsend, 57, died peacefully in her sleep at the home of her son, Ben Townsend, on Monday, June 28, of lung cancer.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on December 21, 1946, she was the daughter of Willard and Eleanor Lewis. In 1964, she graduated from Boothbay Region High School, and from the Bay Street School of Business in Boston in 1966, before returning to her home in the Boothbay Region.

In 1966, she worked as a secretary for Ethelyn P. Giles Real Estate for two years and, in 1968, as a legal assistant for Attorney Blenn Perkins for six years. Then she became an assistant for Harold Bishop Insurance Agency for ten years before returning to the legal field as a legal assistant in the District Attorney's Office in Wiscasset for two years. She then worked for Attorney Chip Griffin for 16 years.

Ms. Townsend served as pres-ident, vice president, and secretary of the Boothbay Fire Department women's Auxiliary ("Missfires") for many years.

She was always an avid reader and enjoyed the north woods of Maine. She had a great sense of humor, which she maintained to her last day. She had a great knowledge of the town happenings and towns people.

Ms. Townsend focused on her family, She raised her two children and continued to care for her grandson. She also served as the key support to her disabled brother, Robert Lewis, until his death. She was extremely close to her mother and sister due to the accidental drowning of her father when she was a child. She remained a lifelong friend with her former husband, Glenn Townsend.

She is predeceased by her father, Willard Lewis, brother, Robert Lewis, and partner of 17 years, Weldon Miller who died last November.

Survivors include two children, Kerri L. Kelly, of Boothbay Harbor and Benjamin A. Townsend and his partner Alyson Montgomery of East Boothbay; one grandson, John Scott Kelley of Boothbay; mother, Eleanor G. Lewis; aunt, Helen B. Lewis, and nephew, Kevin Lewis, all of Boothbay Harbor.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, July 1at the Congregational Church of Booth-bay Harbor at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Boothbay Fire Department Women's Aux-iliary (Missfires), c/o Boothbay Fire Department, Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay, ME 04537

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harring-ton & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Doris Mae Townsend
2004-06-24

Doris Mae Lewis Townsend, 64, of Portland, died Saturday, June 12 at the Baron Center in Portland.

Born November 19, 1939 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Elvin R. Lewis and Jenny E. Lewis. She was the youngest of six children.

Mrs. Townsend had many interests ranging from country music, crossword puzzles, crocheting figure skating and watching television. Her greatest joys in life were Christmas and her cats, Scallywag and Kitty.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She always put her family, friends and cats ahead of herself. Her personality made her a favorite among those who knew her.

She worked for many years as a City of Portland crossing guard for ten years, an Avon sales representative, and held other jobs such as a soda jerk at Woolwich's, and at Zayres department store in Portland.

A son, Robert E. Alley Townsend of Windham, died August 14, 2003.

Survivors include two children, Robin Ross of Westport and David Townsend of Portland; four grandchildren, Jeremy Burnham, Derek Burnham and Brindi Ross, all of Westport, and Cassidy Townsend of Portland; two sisters, Barbara Lorrain of Boothbay Harbor and Betty Penner of Ohio; two brothers, Harley Lewis of North Carolina and Paul Lewis of Maine.

A service in celebration of her life was held Friday, June 18 at the Memorial Chapel of Independent Death Care of Maine, 471 Deering Ave., Portland. Interment will be at a later date at Evergreen cemetery in Portland.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Cleo Fund, 28 Byfield Rd., Portland, ME 04103.

Charlotte Trask
2004-01-29

Charlotte Trask, 84, of Boothbay Harbor passed away Tuesday, January 20 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in West Boothbay Harbor on May 8, 1919, she was the daughter of Charles and Lucretia Sheldon Williams. She grew up in Boothbay, graduated from locals schools and went on to study violin, graduating from Boston University.

In the spring of 1952 she married Clayton Trask and together made their home in Boothbay Harbor, remaining in the same home until the time of each one's passing.

Mrs. Trask loved to knit, baking pies, cookies and breads; her favorite was making jelly preserves and jam. She enjoyed working outside in her flower garden, and loved all animals, especially her two cats.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, where she and Clayton were married in 1952.

Mrs. Trask is predeceased by her husband, Clayton Trask, who passed away in 1990, and a sister, Susie Williams in 1962.

Survivors include a son, Sheldon Trask and companion Sharon Sawyer of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Sharon Wursthorne and husband Ed of South Portland; four grandchildren, April, Chad, Brittny, and Kyle Wursthorne, all of South Portland; three sisters, Emma Downs of Dover, N.H., Millie Enman of South Portland, and Mabel Williams of Portland; three nephews, Ernest Downs of Madbury, N.H., Charles Enman of Winthrop, and William Enman of Cape Elizabeth; and one niece, Suzanne Molner, of Knoxville, Tenn.

A funeral service was held Friday January 23 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Lila Irene Tufts
2004-03-19

Lila Tufts was born to Bertha and Charles Strout on March 3, 1923, in Gray. She attended schools here. She met her best friend, Wilbur D. Tufts, and married him November 2, 1940.

And she died at Maine Medical Center after many years at home standing strong and brave against several diseases.

Her passion and lifelong dedication was to her husband, family, friends and to all children. Lila enjoyed embroidery, drawing, laughing, picking wildflowers, roaming with her daughter in the RV, decorative-art painting and meeting the needs of others.

The life she lived will remain always, held as an example for those who knew her to also rise to that level of love and loyalty.

Lila was predeceased by her beloved husband, Wilbur D. Tufts, of New Gloucester, in 1973. Surviving are a son, Wilbur B. Tufts, and a daughter, Anita Stone Richards, both of New Gloucester; one sister, Velma Smith, of Oxford; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews, most of whom reside in Maine.

Burial will be in the spring. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Norma N. Tupper
2004-07-01

Norma Neilson Tupper of Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, June 26.

She was born in Woburn, Mass. in 1922. She graduated from Woburn High School and the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston. Mrs. Tupper worked for General Electric and visited and worked summer in Boothbay Harbor.

She married Asa Tupper Jr. in 1943 and moved to Boothbay Harbor to make it her home.

She was a waitress and cook in many of the area restaurants in her early years and was a bookkeeper and office manager at Anderson & Gaw Oil Co. for 17 years.

Mrs. Tupper's mother-in-law, Elizabeth Tupper, sparked an interest in antiques and it became her and Asa's life-long passion. She operated the Second Shop until she retired in October 1996. She was an expert in fine linens and hand-work. The Second Shop was a favorite of both local residents and summer visitors. She loved lawn sales and estate sales. They remained a life-long pleasure for her.

Mrs. Tupper delighted in her great-grandson, Nathan Murray, and cherished her family.

She was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Asa Tupper Jr., who died in February 2004.

Mrs. Tupper is survived by a sister, Olive Addey of Medford, Mass.; daughters Holly Tupper, Pam Murray and her husband, Terry Murray; grandson, Ben Murray and his wife, Joan Murray; great-grandson, Nathan E. Murray; granddaughter, Becky Richards and her husband, Fred Richards; as well as many nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no funeral.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to honor her memory may be sent to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
