Eleanor P. Turner
2004-05-13

Eleanor P. Turner, 89, former resident of South Dennis, Mass., died Saturday, May 8.

She was the daughter of Ralph and Elin (Bengston) Pierce, born August 9, 1914 in Brookline, Mass. and was of the Christian Science Faith.

Mrs. Turner and her husband moved to the Port Charlotte, Fla. area in 1995.

She enjoyed taking care of her family and loved sewing.

Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband Robert and sister Bettina Sutton.

Survivors include her son, Richard of Punta Gorda, Fla.; daughter, Bettina P. Sigman of Estero, Fla., five grandchildren; five great-grandchild-ren.

A memorial service in celebration of Mrs. Turner's life will be held in July at Boothbay Harbor.

Katharine V. Thompson

Katharine Vansant Thompson, 62, Sheepscot, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 9, after a valiant battle against breast cancer.Known lovingly to all as Katie, she died surrounded by her family with the support of countless others whose lives were touched by her friendship.

Born on August 7, 1942, she was the daughter of John and Marion Vansant, who resided in Huntingdon Valley, Penn.

Throughout her childhood, she enjoyed sailing with her family on Long Island Sound and became a skilled and passionate sailor. Her life-long love of sailing took her from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.

Her education at Abington Friends School taught her to uphold the values of peace and world outreach espoused by the Quakers. In 1958, she was selected to represent her school as an exchange student in Selestat, France. She went on to graduate in 1964 from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., earning a Bachelor's Degree in French.

In 1965, she married Ranald Hobbs. They lived together in Washington, D.C. and later in Baltimore with their two children, Karen and Christopher. After separating from Ranald, she eventually relocated to Wiscasset, as a single mother. She worked at the law office of David Soule and enhanced her creative side with macram artistry and craft projects, hereby establishing herself in the arts and crafts community.

Mrs. Thompson was introduced to William M. Thompson, an architect practicing in Princeton, N.J., who joined her in Maine when they married in 1974. They lived together in Wiscasset prior to moving to Sheepscot, where they lived for the past 18 years with their two daughters, Cammie and Gillian.

In 1981, she spent a year with her family in Scotland, where she became inspired by innovative approaches to education. She later founded the Sheepscot Valley Children's House in Wiscasset.

She served as a member of various organizations, including Lincoln County Historical Association, the Female Charitable Society, the Wiscasset Planning Board, and the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association.

Mrs. Thompson was also a devoted and active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and helped initiate the hand bell choir.

She is predeceased by her father, John S. Vansant, and an infant son, William Thompson.

Survivors include William M. Thompson, her husband of 29 years; a son Christopher Hobbs (Chris) of Bradenton, Fla.; three daughters, Karen F. Paul of Atlanta, Ga., Katharine M. Thompson (Gillian) of Golden, Colo., and Joanna C. Thompson (Cammie) of Boston, Mass.; her mother, Marion Fisher Vansant of Damariscotta; and a sister, Susan Vansant Bartz of Santa Barbara, Calif.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newcastle.

Arrangements under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.

Elizabeth Thornton
2005-03-03

Elizabeth Cary Huggard Thornton, of Houston, Tx. and Wiscasset passed away at home in Houston on February 13, 2005.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on June 9, 1919, she grew up in Brenham, Tx. and moved to Houston in 1940 after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin.

In 1945, she married James ("Jim") S. Thornton and they had two children, Bruce and Bette.

Mrs. Thornton was a teacher, business woman, researcher, and author. She was the Founding President of The Plumeria Society of America in 1979 and authored two books on plumerias. She and and her husband traveled the world studying plumerias and she was recognized as an authority on their propagation and cultivation. She was an honorary member of The Garden Club of Houston and The Garden Club of America.

She was also fascinated by gems and minerals, dating back to her days as a geology student at The University of Texas. She loved to go to the mines wherever she was to look for minerals, and had an extensive amateur collection. She supported several gemstone mining ventures.

In 1990 at the age of 70, she began a new chapter in her life when she bought and remodeled an older home in Wiscasset. She spent her summers entertaining friends and family on the front porch of her home overlooking the river. She was also an accomplished bridge player and looked forward to the weekly games at the Senior Center.

Predeceased by her husband, Mrs. Thornton is survived by her son Bruce C. Thornton and wife Sharon of Katy, Texas, their daughter Angela and husband Miguel Espinosa of Burlingame, Calif., and her daughter Elizabeth ("Bette") T. Gips and husband, Jerry R. Gips and their sons Russell and Graham, and Russell's fiance Rebecca Bowles, all of Houston, Texas.

At her request, their will be no services. Remembrances may be made to the Elizabeth Thornton Plumeria Garden, c/o The Botanic Garden of Houston, 6524 San Felipe, PMB 156, Houston, Texas 77057, or the Geology Foundation, Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin, Texas 78713.

James "Duke" Terry
2005-01-06

James D. Terry passed away Saaturday, January 1, 2005 at St. Andrews Hospital after a long battle.He was known as "Duke" to all of his friends.

He was born June 14, 1934 in Charleston, W. Va.As a young child he moved with his family to LaMarque, Texasand graduated from Texas A & M in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in personnel.

Mr. Terry was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force the same year. After completing pilot training, he flew as an instructor pilot in the F-105, "Thud" at Reese AFB, Texas until 1965.He then served as aide to General Pinkham Smith in Osan,Korea; Operations Officer at the Air Force Academy; T-33 Pilot to General Robin Olds; fighter pilot an F-4 C "Phantom" in Tuy Hoa, and Tan Son Nhut Air Force Bases in Vietnam.He then went to the Pentagon as Executive Officer for Plans and Special Operations. He commanded the 308th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Homestead AFB, Florida in the F-4 C and D models; he attended Air War College in 1977;and served as Deputy Commander for Maintenance at Moody AFB in Georgia; vice commander of the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing, and Wing Commander for the 31st and 35th TFWs at George AFB, California, flying F-4 (Phantom) C's, D's and, E's, or "Wild Weasels".

From there he traveled to Germany to become the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics at United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). In 1989, he retired as Deputy Director for Logistics for the European Command(EUCOM) at the rank of Colonel. Mr. Terry loved his military career and considered himself a fighter pilot above all of his other accomplishments. He subsequently went to work for General Dynamics Corporation as their Regional Director directing the Middle-East F-16 sales, training and maintenance programs for the Bahraini Air force in Manama, Bahrain from 1989 to 1993, and then transferred to the Vinnell Corporation as Regional Director for "Pre-Positioning and Supply" throughout the Mid-East Kingdomsfollowing Desert Storm I, in a joint venture with a United KingdomCorporation called "AirWorks," spending six and one half years in Bahrain and Oman.

In 1999, he and his wife, Sandy, retired in Boothbay Harbor inthe home they had purchased years before and slowly renovated during summers.He was active on the Boothbay Harbor Appeals Board,Red Cross Blood Bank, FISH, Lions, and is a past commander of the American Legion.

His military awards and decorations include: two Legion of Merits, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf cluster, the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf clusters, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star and the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He was awarded the Keys to the City of Valdosta , Georgia; and Apple Valley, California, and a lifetime honorary membership to the California Highway Patrol.

He loved his family; his friends, his friends, his community, his Country; his "Aggie" football team and the adopted Patriots;skiing,and most of all, he loved life.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; a daughter, Laura; a son, David and his wife Elaine; and two grandsons, Sam and Luke; three brothers, Bruce, Steven, and Douglas; and two sisters, Jan and Susan.

Mr. Terry's friends are invited to a Celebration of His Life to be held at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church, Tuesday, January 11 at l p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to may give a donation to the Boothbay Region Garden Club 2005-2006 beautification projects c/o Mrs. Muriel Jorgenson, 36 Harris Point Road, Boothbay Harbor, ME, 04538; or the charitable cause of their choice.

Harold E. Taylor
2005-01-27

Harold Edwin Taylor, 92, died at his home in St. Andrews Village on Monday, January 17.

Born January 18, 1912, in West Medford, Mass., he was the son of Henry Wilder Taylor and Katherine Clayton Taylor. He attended West Medford schools, Worcester Academy and graduated from Northeastern University in 1936 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

In 1939 he married Jeanette Cobot who died in 1988, after 49 years of marriage. They settled in Wenham, Mass. for 35 years where they raised two daughters, and were involved in the community. They loved gardening, planting and tending many flower gardens and a large scale fruit and vegetable garden.

For 20 years, Mr. Taylor was employed by York Corporation in Boston as a sales engineer designing air conditioning and refrigeration systems for large corporate facilities. Later he worked for Dunham Bush in Brighton, Mass., and as a consultant for New England Telephone.

In 1965, Mr. Taylor and his wife bought their home on Southport and retired there in 1978. Early on Mr. Taylor volunteered his expertise as a refrigeration consultant in the process of rebuilding the freezers at Boothbay Region Fish and Cold Storage. He was active in the Congregational Church of Booth-bay Harbor, on the board of directors of the Boothbay Region YMCA, a lifetime member of the board of directors of Lincoln Arts Festival, president of the Lincoln County Historical Society, member of the Community Advisory Board for St. Andrews Hospital, and spent many years as a Hospice caregiver. Mr. Taylor was also a Shriner all his adult life.

His many hobbies included woodworking and home remodeling and he and his wife loved to travel. He loved sailing and powerboating into his 90s.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Taylor Smith of Marietta, Ga., and Cynthia Taylor OBrien and her husband Stephen of Harvard, Mass.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, one of whom was born the evening of January 21, 2005; and several nieces and nephews.

Led by the Rev. Sarah M. Foulger, a celebration of life was held at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor on Friday, January 21, followed by a private burial at Sprucelawn cemetery in Southport.

Joan Telford
2005-05-26

Joan Telford, 85, died peacefully Friday, May 20, with two of her daughters at her side.

Born April 20, 1920 in Liverpool, England, she served as a WAAF in an anti-aircraft unit in England during World War II.

At the end of the war, she married A. Hudson "Hud" Telford and the newly-weds came to live in the United States.

While her family was growing up, she was an active volunteer in the PTA, Brownies, Girl and Cub Scouts and Sunday school and yet always seemed to have time for baking, knitting, sewing and gardening.

The family began summering on Sawyer's Island in Boothbay in 1964 and bought land there with the plan of eventual retirement in Maine.

Mrs. Telford worked with her husband in the Telford Tree business in Wilmington, Del. until his death in 1999 when she moved to an independent apartment at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. There she was active on the Resident Council and was known for her thriving array of houseplants and her porch greenhouse. She loved her cozy apartment, the challenge of solving the daily crossword puzzle, watching "Jeopardy," the many social activities and, especially, all the people she got to know at the Village.

Survivors include her four children, Penny Matthews and husband Andrew of Boothbay Harbor; Jane Witten, her husband John of Pottstown, Penn., their two daughters and granddaughters; Kim Bradley and her husband Tony and two daughters of Boothbay; and Bob Telford and his wife Gigi and their two sons of Hockessin, Del.; her sister, Kath Jackson in England; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their spouses in Canada; her nieces, nephews and many special friends.

There will be no service at her request.

In lieu of flowers, plant a tree and watch it grow.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Ronald And Hazel Templeman
2005-06-30

Ronald B. Templeman, 86, died with his wife, on the afternoon of June 21, at their home on Westport. born April 20, 1919, in Ramsgate, England, he was the son of Bertram and Violet Templeman. He and his wife lived on Westport for most of their marriage.

Mr. Templeman was a welder at Bath Iron Works, until retiring.

Hazel P. Templeman, 98, died with her husband on the afternoon of June 21, at their home on Westport. born December 19, 1906, in Bath, she was the daughter of Philena (Tarbox) Kehail. She and her husband lived on Westport for most of their marriage.

She remained a homemaker until her death.

Survivors include a nephew, Nelson Burtt of Hiram; and several grandnieces and nephews.

The couple will be laid to rest, privately, at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta.

Alice Tessier, Pennell graduate, dies
2005-11-18

Alice Jane Davis Tessier, a member of the Pennell Institute Class of 1926, passed away quietly at the age of 97, with her family at her side, in September.

Born in Cumberland, she was the daughter of George and Margaret Davis.

Her husband, Herve A. Tessier, passed away in 1958, and two grandsons-in-law also predeceased her, Michael Lafferty in 2005 and Harry Spoerl.

She is survived by her daughter, with whom she lived, Claire T. Stevens and her husband Joseph E., Sr.; nine grandchildren, Colleen, Joseph, Jr., and his wife Denise, Claire and her husband Gene, Jane, Anne and her husband Michael, Jeanette and her husband Brian, Donna and her husband Louis, Daniel and his wife Danielle and Mary, 35 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Lewis, of Falmouth, and several nieces and dear friends.
