Stoddard Thomas dies at 69
2005-04-29

Stoddard "Bob" Thomas, 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, April 24, at his home in New Gloucester.

He had been a longtime resident of Gray.

He was born in Searsport on January 26, 1936, a son of Mona and William Thomas.

Bob worked at Healthtex for many years, working his way up to Production Manager.

After Healthtex left the state, Bob went to work for the U. S. Postal Service.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching his grandson play baseball, his granddaughters just play and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Olson Thomas, of New Gloucester; two sons, Robert Chapman and his companion Gail, of New Gloucester and William and wife Beth Chapman of Gray; a daughter, Judith and husband Gregory Rand of Gray; two grandchildren, Ryan Rand and heather Chapman; two sisters, Billie Ragan and Eileen Josephs; and a brother, Paul Roberts; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held in Lower Gloucester Cemetery, with Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to New Gloucester Rescue, P.O. Box 82, New Gloucester, Maine 04260, or Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., P.O. Box 819, Lewiston, Maine 04243.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Wilhelmina Thomas
2005-10-20

Wilhelmina Bragg "Billie" Thomas, 92, of Edgecomb, died Friday October 14 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born November 26, 1912 in Edgecomb, she was a daughter of James and Maxine Ryan Bragg. She was Salutatorian of the class of 1929 at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. She graduated from Bryant & Stratton Secretarial College in Boston.

From 1931 to 1975, she was an administrative secretary at the Boston Farm & Trade School and Thompson Academy. She was a nurse, friend and second mother to thousands of boys who attended these schools.

Mrs. Thomas enjoyed bird watching, indoor gardening, reading, learning and crossword puzzles. She got her driver’s license at 82 and learned to use a computer at 88.

She was a member of the Edgecomb Historical Society, Humane Society, Edgecomb cemetery Committee, National Audubon Society, and the Edgecomb Extension.

Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Raymond Thomas, who died in 2000.

Survivors include a son, James R. Thomas and his wife Sherrie of Orono; and one sister, Meredith Raymond of Amherst, Mass.

A time of visitation was held Wednesday, October 19 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay. Burial will be in the Highland cemetery in Edgecomb at a later date.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Thomas’s memory to Lincoln County Animal Shelter/Humane Society, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Boothbay.

Katharine V. Thompson
2005-01-13

Katharine Vansant Thompson, 62, Sheepscot, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 9, after a valiant battle against breast cancer.Known lovingly to all as Katie, she died surrounded by her family with the support of countless others whose lives were touched by her friendship.

Born on August 7, 1942, she was the daughter of John and Marion Vansant, who resided in Huntingdon Valley, Penn.

Throughout her childhood, she enjoyed sailing with her family on Long Island Sound and became a skilled and passionate sailor. Her life-long love of sailing took her from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.

Her education at Abington Friends School taught her to uphold the values of peace and world outreach espoused by the Quakers. In 1958, she was selected to represent her school as an exchange student in Selestat, France. She went on to graduate in 1964 from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., earning a Bachelor's Degree in French.

In 1965, she married Ranald Hobbs. They lived together in Washington, D.C. and later in Baltimore with their two children, Karen and Christopher. After separating from Ranald, she eventually relocated to Wiscasset, as a single mother. She worked at the law office of David Soule and enhanced her creative side with macram artistry and craft projects, hereby establishing herself in the arts and crafts community.

Mrs. Thompson was introduced to William M. Thompson, an architect practicing in Princeton, N.J., who joined her in Maine when they married in 1974. They lived together in Wiscasset prior to moving to Sheepscot, where they lived for the past 18 years with their two daughters, Cammie and Gillian.

In 1981, she spent a year with her family in Scotland, where she became inspired by innovative approaches to education. She later founded the Sheepscot Valley Children's House in Wiscasset.

She served as a member of various organizations, including Lincoln County Historical Association, the Female Charitable Society, the Wiscasset Planning Board, and the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association.

Mrs. Thompson was also a devoted and active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and helped initiate the hand bell choir.

She is predeceased by her father, John S. Vansant, and an infant son, William Thompson.

Survivors include William M. Thompson, her husband of 29 years; a son Christopher Hobbs (Chris) of Bradenton, Fla.; three daughters, Karen F. Paul of Atlanta, Ga., Katharine M. Thompson (Gillian) of Golden, Colo., and Joanna C. Thompson (Cammie) of Boston, Mass.; her mother, Marion Fisher Vansant of Damariscotta; and a sister, Susan Vansant Bartz of Santa Barbara, Calif.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newcastle.

Arrangements under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.

Ruth Trafford dies
2005-04-08

Ruth Arlene Antone Trafford, 70, passed away on March 29 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, following a long and valiant battle with cancer.

She was born on September 16, 1934, in South Portland, Maine, the youngest daughter of John Everett and Emily Matthews Antone.

Ruth graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1954.

On October, 1954, she married Maitland Dwaine Trafford at the Congregational Church in New Gloucester. They are the proud parents of Bruce Dwaine and Karen Marie.

Ruth was one of the hardest-working women that one would hope to meet. She learned her knack of getting along with people from several jobs, beginning with A and P Super Market in Gray. In 1971 she began a successful career as co-owner of B and R Dairy Bar along with her sister Beryl. In 1977 she became sole owner of the business and continued to run the Dairy Bar until 2001 when her health forced her to retire. In 1991 she started B and R Trucking. In the fall, after the dairy bar closed for the season, Ruth went to work for L. L. Bean. She continued this for several seasons.

She had many hobbies, but especially loved flower gardens. During the Christmas season she made Christmas wreaths. She learned to make afghans from her mother-in-law, Edith, and she always knit hats and mittens for the children.

She was blessed to have as her loving companion and best friend, Richard St. Germain, who has been by her side for the last 19 years. She let many of us know that she never could have made it through this trying time without his love and support.

During the last several years Ruth and Dick have spent the winter months in Florida at the Whisper Creek RV Resort with so many of the wonderful friends that they have met through the years.

There was nothing more important in her life than her children and grandchildren. Kourtney and Adam are her pride and joy.

She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her son Bruce and his wife Jamie Trafford, of New Gloucester, and their children, Kourtney and Adam; her daughter Karen Trafford, of New Gloucester, and her friend Tom Thompson; sisters Beryl Clarke, of Yarmouth, and Hilda and husband Robert Hahn, of Livermore Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and three sisters,. Bernice Olson, Gladys Gerry and Mildred Emery.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Austin E. Trask
2005-04-07

Austin E. Trask, a lifelong resident of Alna, died on the evening of Friday, April 1, at his home, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born September 17, 1942, he was the son of Vanona Trask.

Mr. Trask worked for Hanley Construction for 42 years as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He plowed the town roads, both in Alna and Bristol for many winters.

For 25 years, he was a member of the Lincoln Masonic Lodge and was active throughout his life in town affairs, including service on the planning board and serving as road commissioner for 21 years. A member of the Alna Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years, Mr. Trask served as chief for 12 years. He was instrumental in the construction of the current firehouse and enlisted the help of many townspeople.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camp and riding around the block.

Survivors include his wife, Coleen (Donahue) Trask; a son, Michael and his significant other, Michele Brooks; a daughter, Erika Trask; and two granddaughters, Kateleen and Riley, all of Alna; a brother, Gareath of Nobleboro; and many nieces and nephews.

His brother Clayton of Boothbay predeceased him.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 6 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta with Rev. Desmond Parker officiating. He will be laid to rest Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. at the Alna Cemetery.

If desired, donations may be made in his memory to the Alna Vol. Fire Dept., P.O. Box 267, Alna, ME 04535.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta.

Aileen Tufts, 102
2005-04-01

Aileen Bennett Tufts was born November 10, 1902, the daughter of Charles Payson and Hattie Woodbury Bennett, in New Gloucester at what is now Opportunity Farm. She died March 26.

She graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1920, then went on to the University of Maine at Orono, becoming a member of Phi Mu sorority and graduating in 1924.

On August 1, 1925, Aileen wed Eben Dutton Tufts, of New Gloucester.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester, and was active in civic affairs in both Gray and New Gloucester for more than 60 years.

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Eben; a son, Payson A. Tufts, Jr., and a great-grandson, Mark Wallace.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara E. Pollard; grandchildren Denise Pollard, Wayne Pollard ands his wife Gwen; great-grandchildren Jessica Pollard and Nicole Hamilton and her husband Walker, all of Gray; a son, Gordon E. Tufts, of Las Vegas; grandchildren Terry Lynn, of Indiana, and Pernell Tufts, of Las Vegas; daughter-in-law Pauline B. Tufts; grandchildren Sharon Henson and Charles Tufts, of Bakersfield, CA, Elizabeth Wallace and Ross Tufts, of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Payson A. Tufts, Jr., of Oregon; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation period was held on Tuesday; a graveside service will be held later. Memorial donations may be made to The Opportunity Farm for Boys and Girls, P.O. Box 65, New Gloucester, ME 04260.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Martin D. Turpie
2005-11-10

Attorney Martin D. Turpie, 67, of Longmeadow, Mass., a well known and respected partner with Springfield’s law firm Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas, LLP, died early Monday morning, November 7, at his residence.

He was born in Montreal, Canada, the son of the late William and Carolyn (Williams) Turpie. A graduate of Morse High School, Class of 1956, he earned his A.B. degree from Colby College, Waterville, Class of 1960, and his L.L.B. degree from Boston University School of Law, Class of 1963.

Martin served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve from 1963-1964 USAJAG Corps. Attorney Turpie joined Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas, LLP in 1964 and was made a partner in that firm in 1971. In 2004, he retired after 40 years of service specializing in areas of Probate and Estate Administration, Residential and Commercial Real Estate purchases, Taxation, Corporate and Business Law, Wills and Trust preparation and administration. Martin was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Hampden County Bar Association, a former elected member of the East Longmeadow Planning Board, and a former member of the Town of East Longmeadow Board of Selectmen.

He was a longtime member and former officer with the Ocean Point Colony Trust in Boothbay, a member and former Past Commander of the Italian American Veteran’s Post # 64 East Longmeadow, Past President and longtime member of the Colony Club, and former longtime member of Longmeadow Country Club.

Some of his favorite pastimes included his weekly Sunday softball games at Ocean Point, a quiet day fly fishing or the peace and tranquility of watching the sunrise and sunset. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, fisherman and golfer and a voracious reader.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Katharine (Kaynor) Turpie of East Longmeadow; four children, Erica T. O’Connor and her husband, Daniel of Hampton, New Hampshire, Bruce W. Turpie of Waltham, Mass., Andrea E. Steele and her husband, Douglas of Milford, Mass., and Dana J. Turpie of Rockland; one sister, Alison T. Butterworth and her husband, David of Hanover, Mass.; one grandson, Duncan W. O’Connor; and a nephew, David G. Butterworth II of Washington, D.C.

A funeral service will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd., Springfield, MA 01129. Calling hours will precede his funeral Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Elizabeth Thornton
2005-03-03

Elizabeth Cary Huggard Thornton, of Houston, Tx. and Wiscasset passed away at home in Houston on February 13, 2005.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on June 9, 1919, she grew up in Brenham, Tx. and moved to Houston in 1940 after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin.

In 1945, she married James ("Jim") S. Thornton and they had two children, Bruce and Bette.

Mrs. Thornton was a teacher, business woman, researcher, and author. She was the Founding President of The Plumeria Society of America in 1979 and authored two books on plumerias. She and and her husband traveled the world studying plumerias and she was recognized as an authority on their propagation and cultivation. She was an honorary member of The Garden Club of Houston and The Garden Club of America.

She was also fascinated by gems and minerals, dating back to her days as a geology student at The University of Texas. She loved to go to the mines wherever she was to look for minerals, and had an extensive amateur collection. She supported several gemstone mining ventures.

In 1990 at the age of 70, she began a new chapter in her life when she bought and remodeled an older home in Wiscasset. She spent her summers entertaining friends and family on the front porch of her home overlooking the river. She was also an accomplished bridge player and looked forward to the weekly games at the Senior Center.

Predeceased by her husband, Mrs. Thornton is survived by her son Bruce C. Thornton and wife Sharon of Katy, Texas, their daughter Angela and husband Miguel Espinosa of Burlingame, Calif., and her daughter Elizabeth ("Bette") T. Gips and husband, Jerry R. Gips and their sons Russell and Graham, and Russell's fiance Rebecca Bowles, all of Houston, Texas.

At her request, their will be no services.
