Parker H. Vincent
1999-10-21

Parker H. Vincent, 83, of Boothbay Harbor and Clearwater, Florida, died at Maine Medical Center on Monday, October 18 after a short illness.

Born in Malden, Mass., February 14, 1916, he was the son of Frederick H. and Miriam P. Clark Vincent. He spent his youth on Cape Cod, Mass., where he met and married his wife, Madelyn L. "Pal" Bassett on September 23, 1937.

Mr. Vincent was educated as an electronics engineer and worked all of his professional life in the broadcasting industry, first in radio and in television as it developed.

After serving as chief engineer and manager of several radio stations he was employed by a consulting engineering firm in Manchester, N.H. While there he was responsible for the development of a remote control system for broadcasting stations, and traveled nationally selling, installing, and servicing the systems. One of his assignments was to conduct a feasibility study for a group of Maine and New Hampshire broadcasters headed by former Gov. Horace Hildreth, regarding the establishment of a television transmitter on Mt. Washington, N.H. This project took the better part of a year to complete. It showed that coverage would be excellent, but that the difficulties with weather, power availability, and winter transport made the project costly and difficult.

Mr. Vincent was subsequently engaged to build and operate the proposed station, which began broadcasting as WMTW-TV in the fall of 1954. He continued in the position of Director of Engineering until his retirement in 1983 after 30 years of service. He was honored at that time by the Maine Association of Broadcasters for his service to the industry, then the first engineer to receive that distinction.

The third owner of WMTW-TV, Harrow Communications Corp., made Mr. Vincent Director of Engineering of the Philadelphia-based company. His office remained in Maine, and he commuted to Boothbay Harbor on weekends until his retirement in 1983. He carried on a consulting practice in addition to his regular duties.

The family lived in Auburn and Poland Spring, and the engineering office was at the Poland Spring Studios.

The Vincents purchased the 35 foot Poly-Craft motor yacht Lemuan in 1964 and berthed it at the former Boatel Boothbay. The following year, Mrs. Vincent opened a branch of her antique shop there. A couple of years later they bought the house in Boothbay Harbor and became residents.

He was a life member of Tyrian Lodge #73 A.F. & A.M. in Mechanic Falls; Casco Bay Power Squadron; a chorister with Lincoln Arts Festival Chorus, and a life member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers.

Mr. Vincent was a lifetime choir singer, beginning with the junior choir at the West Dennis Church at age 14 and continuing at the Episcopal churches at Chelmsford, Mass.; Gardiner, Mass.; Goffstown, N.H.; Olean, N.Y., and Lewiston. The family attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Lewiston where he served as senior warden; diocesan delegate; member of the diocesan standing committee; and as lay reader licensed by the then Bishop Loring.

Mr. Vincent was predeceased by a son, Lee Vincent.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years; three daughters, Madelyn M. Huffmire of Ocean Point and Mansfield Center, Conn., Ann F. Durand of Arlington, Va., and Valerie S. Vincent of Boothbay Harbor; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, October 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 22 at the funeral home with a burial at 2 p.m. at Mt. Auburn cemetery in Auburn.

A memorial service will be held in Clearwater, Fla., at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 303, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
